Python convert list into nested list based on condition - python-3.x

I have a list
data = [1, 2, 3, 0, 0, 4, 5, 0, 0, 0, 4, 6, 7, 0]
expected output
result = [[1,2,3], [4,5], [4,6,7]]
Split the list when a zero occur; add all the non-zero numbers to a new list till the next zero
This is what I have tried:
res = []
tmp = []
for i in data:
if i == 0 and len(tmp) > 0:
res.append(tmp)
tmp = []
elif i != 0:
tmp.append(i)
I am wondering is there a pythonic way of doing the same...

You can use itertools.groupby:
from itertools import groupby
data = [1, 2, 3, 0, 0, 4, 5, 0, 0, 0, 4, 6, 7, 0]
result = [list(g) for k, g in groupby(data, key=bool) if k]
# [[1, 2, 3], [4, 5], [4, 6, 7]]
The grouping key function uses the fact that bool maps 0 to False and all other ints to True. You could be more explicit and use
key=lambda n: n != 0

you can use more_itertools.split_at:
from more_itertools import split_at
data = [1, 2, 3, 0, 0, 4, 5, 0, 0, 0, 4, 6, 7, 0]
list(filter(None, split_at(data, lambda x: x==0 )))
output:
[[1, 2, 3], [4, 5], [4, 6, 7]]

How to append item to match the length of two list in Python

I am working on a Python script which is connected to a server. Every x min, server returns two list but the length of these list is not same. For ex:
a = [8, 10, 1, 34]
b = [4, 6, 8]
As you can see above that a is of length 4 and b is of length 3. Similarly, sometimes it returns
a = [3, 6, 4, 5]
b = [8, 3, 5, 2, 9, 3]
I have to write a logic where I have to check if length of these two list is not same, then add the 0 at the end of the list which is smaller than other list. So for ex, if input is:
a = [3, 6, 4, 5]
b = [8, 3, 5, 2, 9, 3]
then output will be:
a = [3, 6, 4, 5, 0, 0]
b = [8, 3, 5, 2, 9, 3]
What can I try to achieve this?

For now, I can suggest this solution:
a = [3, 6, 4, 5]
b = [8, 3, 5, 2, 9, 3]
# Gets the size of a and b.
sizeA, sizeB = len(a), len(b)

zeros = [0 for _ in range(abs(sizeA-sizeB))]
# Determines whether a or b needs to be appended with 0,0,0,0...

You should use extend instead of append. This is the way to add a list to another list in Python. The list here is the list of zeros.
a = [3, 6, 4, 5, 9, 3]
b = [8, 3, 5, 2]
lenA, lenB = len(a), len(b)
diff=abs(len(a)-len(b))
if lenA < lenB:
a.extend([0]*diff)
else:
b.extend([0]*diff)
print(a)
print(b)
You could also try to use more_itertools padded() method:
It's prob. more elegant and adaptable for future Use cases.
Notes: just need to do pip install more_itertools first.
# simple example to demo it:
from more_itertools import padded
print(list(padded([1, 2, 3], 0, 5))) # last num: 5 is the numbers of 0 to be padded to make the total length to be 5. (needs 2 zeros)
# [1, 2, 3, 0, 0]

3D matrix addition python

I am trying to add 3D matrix but third loop is not starting from 0.
Here shape of matrix is (2,3,3).
Code:
for i in range(0,r):
for j in range(0,c):
for l in range(0,k):
sum[i][j][k]=A1[i][j][k]+A2[i][j][k]
Output:
IndexError: index 3 is out of bounds for axis 0 with size 3
For element-wise addition of two matrices, you can simply use the + operator between two numpy arrays:
#create two matrices of random integers
matrix1 = np.random.randint(10, size=(2,3,3))
matrix2 = np.random.randint(10, size=(2,3,3))
#add the two matrices element-wise
sum_matrix = matrix1 + matrix2
print(matrix1, matrix2, sum_matrix, sep='\n__________\n')
I don't get IndexError. Maybe you post your whole code?

You iterate with 'l' in the third loop but to access in list, you used k. As a result, your code is trying to access k-th index which doesn't exists, and you're getting an error.
Use this:
for i in range(0, r):
for j in range(0, c):
for l in range(0, k):
sum[i][j][l] = A1[i][j][l] + A2[i][j][l]

Finding the number of occurrences of various groups in a list

`So,I am given a list-
group = [2,1,3,4]
Each index of this list represents a group.
So group 0 = 2
group 1 = 1
group 2 = 3
group 3 = 4

the output I want is:

If the number of times the element appears in each sublist of l ie if both l[0][0] and l[0][1] have 0's appear 2 times, it is added to the index 0 of the dict. Since both l[0][0] and l[0][1] have 3 appear 4 times(this is because group[3] is 4), it is added to the index 0.
now in l[1][0] and 0 appears just once(instead of twice) so its not added to index 1. However 1 just appears once so it is added to index 1.Thanks!

Initialize and Populate 2 Dimensional Array in Python from other Lists

I want to create 2 dimensional array and populate it with the following information.
n = 7
j = [0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
k = [0, 2, 4, 3, 3, 2, 1]
l = [0 , 46, 52, 30, 36 ,56, 40]
so, the the first list of the List L should b [0,0,0], second list of list L should be [1,2,46], third should of List L should be the list [2, 4, 52] and so on. But its not working and it keep overriding the values

Initialization of L, and thats ok

And L after modification, which is very wrong

First and foremost:
L = [[0]*3]*n
is the wrong way to initialize a 2D list. If I set l[0][0] to 1, look what happens:
n = 7
L = [[0]*3]*n
L[0][0] = 1
print(L)
Output:
[[1, 0, 0], [1, 0, 0], [1, 0, 0], [1, 0, 0], [1, 0, 0], [1, 0, 0], [1, 0, 0]]
To properly initialize a 2D list, do:
L = [[0] * 3 for _ in range(n)]
If you change it to this, your code will work.
But actually, your problem can be solved in a much simpler way. Just use zip:
j = [0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
k = [0, 2, 4, 3, 3, 2, 1]
l = [0, 46, 52, 30, 36, 56, 40]
result = [list(x) for x in zip(j, k, l)]
print(result)
Output:
[[0, 0, 0],
[1, 2, 46],
[2, 4, 52],
[3, 3, 30],
[4, 3, 36],
[5, 2, 56],
[6, 1, 40]]

Adding sublist to list in python3 not working

I have a really weird issue in Python3. I have some code that generates some different list from a list of integers (what this does exactly is not relevant).
def get_next_state(state):
max_val = max(state)
max_index = state.index(max_val)
new_state = state
for n in range(max_val + 1):
new_state[max_index] -= 1
new_state[(n + max_index) % len(state)] += 1
return new_state
Now all I want to do is add a next state to some list that keeps the states. This is my code:
l = [0, 2, 7, 0]
seen_states = []
for _ in range(10):
print(l)
seen_states += [l]
l = get_next_state(l)
print(seen_states)
For some reason list l is assigned correctly when I print it, but it is not added correctly to the list of seen states. Note that I have also tried seen_states.append(l) instead of using += [l]. Does anyone know why this happend?
To prevent these problems use copy, deepcopy or list[:]

return new_state
You are sending your list l inside the function. When you assign it to another name, you are not making a copy but referencing the original object. Any modification on these lists is a change in the original object.
Using new_state = state[:] (copies the list instead of referencing the original) in the get_next_state produces the following output:
[0, 2, 7, 0]
[2, 4, 1, 2]
[3, 1, 2, 3]
[0, 2, 3, 4]
[1, 3, 4, 1]
[2, 4, 1, 2]
[3, 1, 2, 3]
[0, 2, 3, 4]
[1, 3, 4, 1]
[2, 4, 1, 2]
[[0, 2, 7, 0], [2, 4, 1, 2], [3, 1, 2, 3], [0, 2, 3, 4], [1, 3, 4, 1], [2, 4, 1, 2], [3, 1, 2, 3], [0, 2, 3, 4], [1, 3, 4, 1], [2, 4, 1, 2]]
Not sure if this is your desired output, as you did not specify what you are getting as "wrong" output
