Event Bus and Asynchronism in receptors execution - multithreading

I challenged myself to design and implement (in Java, but still at the design level) of an Event Bus, for multithreading. There is no serious usage of this system planned in the future, the only interest is in the challenge itself and its optimization.
Event Bus were designed in order to have asynchronous execution between the firing of the event and the code associated to its reception. However, with a thread (EventManager) controlling the event bus, I see two possible implementation.
My question is: Which one if this two implementations is the best?
1) The EventManager thread calls each systems subscribed to the event and run its code in a sequential way.
Although this solutions is indeed asynchronous when thinking about emitter - receptors, we still have a synchronism during the execution of multiple receptors. Also, if one of the receptor function takes time, we have a delay in the entire execution of the bus management.
2) Each receptor system has its own buffer bus, and the EventManager thread only retransmits the event to the subscribed systems, multiplying the memory used (event may be rewritten in multiple systems at the same time) but resolving the synchronism problem.
I guess in a typical system (ie game, non computing-heavy software or time critical solution), the first one is the best. The second might take a lot of memory for not that much time optimization.
Did you have this problem before? Do you have any tips?

Between the two, you need to pick and choose what your design requirements need.
For option 1:
Pros:
Sequential designs are (in my experience) easier to design and implement
Easier to control and understand (in that you can implement even priorities as a side effect of sequence)
Mutation of your event passed between each receptors do not need synchronization because it is thread-confined.
Cons:
Again as you discussed, if one receptor blocks, the other receptors in line will suffer.
As a result of sequentiality, receptors will not be able to take advantage of parallel computing.
For option 2:
Pros:
Receptors operate independently of each other (and provide more opportunity for parallelization)
As long as events are processed as soon as it reaches the buffer, memory is not really adversely affected
Receptors that block can use the buffer to store events for later processing instead of holding up the line
Cons:
Receptors must be well coordinated in order to implement things such as event priorities and ensuring that all receptors (even those that block and have the event enqueued) finish together
Mutating the event requires clients submitting receptors to use synchronization in order to remain data consistent with other receptors
If anything, I would personally take option #2 in favor of performance because often memory will suffer as a side effect of performance gain. However if your target audience does not develop multithreaded clients or synchronization is hard to enforce, I would go with option #1 in preference with safety and reliability.

Why must/should UI frameworks be single threaded?

Closely related questions have been asked before:

But the answers to those questions still leave me unclear on some points.
The asker of the first question asked if multi-threading would help performance, and the answerers mostly said that it would not, because it is very unlikely that the GUI would be the bottleneck in a 2D application on modern hardware. But this seems to me a sneaky debating tactic. Sure, if you have carefully structured your application to do nothing other than UI calls on the UI thread you won't have a bottleneck. But that might take a lot of work and make your code more complicated, and if you had a faster core or could make UI calls from multiple threads, maybe it wouldn't be worth doing.
A commonly advocated architectural design is to have view components that don't have callbacks and don't need to lock anything except maybe their descendants. Under such an architecture, can't you let any thread invoke methods on view objects, using per-object locks, without fear of deadlock?
I am less confident about the situation with UI controls, but as long their callbacks are only invoked by the system, why should they cause any special deadlock issues? After all, if the callbacks need to do anything time consuming, they will delegate to another thread, and then we're right back in the multiple threads case.
How much of the benefit of a multi-threaded UI would you get if you could just block on the UI thread? Because various emerging abstractions over async in effect let you do that.
Almost all of the discussion I have seen assumes that concurrency will be dealt with using manual locking, but there is a broad consensus that manual locking is a bad way to manage concurrency in most contexts. How does the discussion change when we take into consideration the concurrency primitives that the experts are advising us to use more, such as software transactional memory, or eschewing shared memory in favor of message passing (possibly with synchronization, as in go)?
TL;DR
It is a simple way to force sequencing to occur in an activity that is going to ultimately be in sequence anyway (the screen draw X times per second, in order).
Discussion
Handling long-held resources which have a single identity within a system is typically done by representing them with a single thread, process, "object" or whatever else represents an atomic unit with regard to concurrency in a given language. Back in the non-emptive, negligent-kernel, non-timeshared, One True Thread days this was managed manually by polling/cycling or writing your own scheduling system. In such a system you still had a 1::1 mapping between function/object/thingy and singular resources (or you went mad before 8th grade).
This is the same approach used with handling network sockets, or any other long-lived resource. The GUI itself is but one of many such resources a typical program manages, and typically long-lived resources are places where the ordering of events matters.
For example, in a chat program you would usually not write a single thread. You would have a GUI thread, a network thread, and maybe some other thread that deals with logging resources or whatever. It is not uncommon for a typical system to be so fast that its easier to just put the logging and input into the same thread that makes GUI updates, but this is not always the case. In all cases, though, each category of resources is most easily reasoned about by granting them a single thread, and that means one thread for the network, one thread for the GUI, and however many other threads are necessary for long-lived operations or resources to be managed without blocking the others.
To make life easier its common to not share data directly among these threads as much as possible. Queues are much easier to reason about than resource locks and can guarantee sequencing. Most GUI libraries either queue events to be handled (so they can be evaluated in order) or commit data changes required by events immediately, but get a lock on the state of the GUI prior to each pass of the repaint loop. It doesn't matter what happened before, the only thing that matters when painting the screen is the state of the world right then. This is slightly different than the typical network case where all the data needs to be sent in order and forgetting about some of it is not an option.
So GUI frameworks are not multi-threaded, per se, it is the GUI loop that needs to be a single thread to sanely manage that single long-held resource. Programming examples, typically being trivial by nature, are often single-threaded with all the program logic running in the same process/thread as the GUI loop, but this is not typical in more complex programs.
To sum up
Because scheduling is hard, shared data management is even harder, and a single resource can only be accessed serially anyway, a single thread used to represent each long-held resource and each long-running procedure is a typical way to structure code. GUIs are only one resource among several that a typical program will manage. So "GUI programs" are by no means single-threaded, but GUI libraries typically are.
In trivial programs there is no realized penalty to putting other program logic in the GUI thread, but this approach falls apart when significant loads are experienced or resource management requires either a lot of blocking or polling, which is why you will often see event queue, signal-slot message abstractions or other approaches to multi-threading/processing mentioned in the dusty corners of nearly any GUI library (and here I'm including game libraries -- while game libs typically expect that you want to essentially build your own widgets around your own UI concept, the basic principles are very similar, just a bit lower-level).
[As an aside, I've been doing a lot of Qt/C++ and Wx/Erlang lately. The Qt docs do a good job of explaining approaches to multi-threading, the role of the GUI loop, and where Qt's signal/slot approach fits into the abstraction (so you don't have to think about concurrency/locking/sequencing/scheduling/etc very much). Erlang is inherently concurrent, but wx itself is typically started as a single OS process that manages a GUI update loop and Erlang posts update events to it as messages, and GUI events are sent to the Erlang side as messages -- thus permitting normal Erlang concurrent coding, but providing a single point of GUI event sequencing so that wx can do its GUI update looping thing.]
Because the GUI main thread code is old. Very old and therefore very much designed for low resource usage. If someone would write everything from scratch again (and even Android as the most recent GUI OS didn't) it would be working well and be better in multithreading.
For example the best two improvements that would help for MT are
Now we have MVVM (Model-View-ViewModel) pattern, this is an extra duplication of data. When the toolskits were developed even a single duplication in a MVC was highly debated. MVVM makes multithreading much easier. IMHO this was the main reason for Microsoft to invent it in the first place in .NET not the data binding.
The scene graph approach. Android, iOS, Windows UWP (based on CoreWindow not hWnd until Windows11 Project Reunion), Gtk4 is decoupling the GPU part from the model. Yes it is in fact a MVVMGM now (Model-View-ViewModel-GPUModel). So another memory intense layer. If you duplicate stuff you need less synchronisation. Combine on Android and SwiftUI on MacOS/iOS is using immutability of GUI widgets now to further improve this View->GPUModel.
Especially with the GPU Model/Scene Graph, the statement that GUIs are single threaded is not true anymore.
Two reasons, as far as I can tell:
It is much easier to reason about single-threaded code; thus the event loop model reduces the likelihood of bugs.
2D User interfaces are not CPU intensive. An old computer with a wimpy graphics card can smoothly render all the windows, frames, widgets, etc. you could possibly desire without skipping a beat.
Basically, if single-threaded code is easier and tends to have fewer bugs, favor that over multithreaded code unless you have a compelling need for parallelization or speed. Your typical GUI frameworks don't have this need.
Now, of course we've all experienced lagginess and freezes from GUI applications before. I'd argue that the vast majority of the time, this is the fault of the developer: putting long-running synchronous code for an event that should have been handled asynchronously (which is a mechanism all the major UI frameworks have).

Would handling each TCP connection in a separate thread improve latency?

I have an FTP server, implemented on top of QTcpServer and QTcpSocket.
I take advantage of the signals and slots mechanism to support multiple TCP connections simultaneously, even though I have a single thread. My code returns as soon as possible to the event loop, it doesn't block (no wait functions), and it doesn't use nested event loops anywhere. That way I already have cooperative multitasking, like Win3.1 applications had.
But a lot of other FTP servers are multithreaded. Now I'm wondering if using a separate thread for handling each TCP connection would improve performance, and especially latency.
On one hand, threads add to latency because you need to start a new thread for each new connection, but on the other, with my cooperative multitasking, other TCP connections have to wait until I've returned to the main loop before their readyRead()/bytesWritten() signals can be handled.
In your current system and ignoring file I/O time one processor is always doing something useful if there's something useful to be done, and waiting ready-to-go if there's nothing useful to be done. If this were a single processor (single core) system you would have maximized throughput. This is often a very good design -- particularly for an FTP server where you don't usually have a human waiting on a packet-by-packet basis.
You have also minimized average latency (for a single processor system.) What you do not have is consistent latency. Measuring your system's performance is likely to show a lot of jitter -- a lot of variation in the time it takes to handle a packet. Again because this is FTP and not real-time process control or human interaction, jitter may not be a problem.
Now, however consider that there is probably more than one processor available on your system and that it may be possible to overlap I/O time and processing time.
To take full advantage of a multi-processor(core) system you need some concurrency.
This normally translates to using multiple threads, but it may be possible to achieve concurrency via asynchronous (non-blocking) file reads and writes.
However, adding multiple threads to a program opens up a huge can-of-worms.
If you do decide to go the MT route, I'd suggest that you consider depending on a thread-aware I/O library. QT may provide that for you (I'm not sure.) If not, take a look at boost::asio (or ACE for an older, but still solid solution). You'll discover that using the MT capabilities of such a library involves a considerable investment in learning time; however as it turns out the time to add on multithreading "by-hand" and get it right is even worse.
So I'd say stay with your existing solution unless you are worried about unused Processor cycles and/or jitter in which case start learning QT's multithreading support or boost::asio.
Do you need to start a new thread for each new connection? Could you not just have a pool of threads that acts on requests as and when they arrive. This should reduce some of the latency. I have to say that in general a multi-threaded FTP server should be more responsive that a single-threaded one. Is it possible to have an event based FTP server?

Is non-blocking I/O really faster than multi-threaded blocking I/O? How?

I searched the web on some technical details about blocking I/O and non blocking I/O and I found several people stating that non-blocking I/O would be faster than blocking I/O. For example in this document.
If I use blocking I/O, then of course the thread that is currently blocked can't do anything else... Because it's blocked. But as soon as a thread starts being blocked, the OS can switch to another thread and not switch back until there is something to do for the blocked thread. So as long as there is another thread on the system that needs CPU and is not blocked, there should not be any more CPU idle time compared to an event based non-blocking approach, is there?
Besides reducing the time the CPU is idle I see one more option to increase the number of tasks a computer can perform in a given time frame: Reduce the overhead introduced by switching threads. But how can this be done? And is the overhead large enough to show measurable effects? Here is an idea on how I can picture it working:
To load the contents of a file, an application delegates this task to an event-based i/o framework, passing a callback function along with a filename
The event framework delegates to the operating system, which programs a DMA controller of the hard disk to write the file directly to memory
The event framework allows further code to run.
Upon completion of the disk-to-memory copy, the DMA controller causes an interrupt.
The operating system's interrupt handler notifies the event-based i/o framework about the file being completely loaded into memory. How does it do that? Using a signal??
The code that is currently run within the event i/o framework finishes.
The event-based i/o framework checks its queue and sees the operating system's message from step 5 and executes the callback it got in step 1.
Is that how it works? If it does not, how does it work? That means that the event system can work without ever having the need to explicitly touch the stack (such as a real scheduler that would need to backup the stack and copy the stack of another thread into memory while switching threads)? How much time does this actually save? Is there more to it?
The biggest advantage of nonblocking or asynchronous I/O is that your thread can continue its work in parallel. Of course you can achieve this also using an additional thread. As you stated for best overall (system) performance I guess it would be better to use asynchronous I/O and not multiple threads (so reducing thread switching).
Let's look at possible implementations of a network server program that shall handle 1000 clients connected in parallel:
One thread per connection (can be blocking I/O, but can also be non-blocking I/O).
Each thread requires memory resources (also kernel memory!), that is a disadvantage. And every additional thread means more work for the scheduler.
One thread for all connections.
This takes load from the system because we have fewer threads. But it also prevents you from using the full performance of your machine, because you might end up driving one processor to 100% and letting all other processors idle around.
A few threads where each thread handles some of the connections.
This takes load from the system because there are fewer threads. And it can use all available processors. On Windows this approach is supported by Thread Pool API.
Of course having more threads is not per se a problem. As you might have recognized I chose quite a high number of connections/threads. I doubt that you'll see any difference between the three possible implementations if we are talking about only a dozen threads (this is also what Raymond Chen suggests on the MSDN blog post Does Windows have a limit of 2000 threads per process?).
On Windows using unbuffered file I/O means that writes must be of a size which is a multiple of the page size. I have not tested it, but it sounds like this could also affect write performance positively for buffered synchronous and asynchronous writes.
The steps 1 to 7 you describe give a good idea of how it works. On Windows the operating system will inform you about completion of an asynchronous I/O (WriteFile with OVERLAPPED structure) using an event or a callback. Callback functions will only be called for example when your code calls WaitForMultipleObjectsEx with bAlertable set to true.

I/O includes multiple kind of operations like reading and writing data from hard drives, accessing network resources, calling web services or retrieving data from databases. Depending on the platform and on the kind of operation, asynchronous I/O will usually take advantage of any hardware or low level system support for performing the operation. This means that it will be performed with as little impact as possible on the CPU.
At application level, asynchronous I/O prevents threads from having to wait for I/O operations to complete. As soon as an asynchronous I/O operation is started, it releases the thread on which it was launched and a callback is registered. When the operation completes, the callback is queued for execution on the first available thread.
If the I/O operation is executed synchronously, it keeps its running thread doing nothing until the operation completes. The runtime doesn't know when the I/O operation completes, so it will periodically provide some CPU time to the waiting thread, CPU time that could have otherwise be used by other threads that have actual CPU bound operations to perform.
So, as #user1629468 mentioned, asynchronous I/O does not provide better performance but rather better scalability. This is obvious when running in contexts that have a limited number of threads available, like it is the case with web applications. Web application usually use a thread pool from which they assign threads to each request. If requests are blocked on long running I/O operations there is the risk of depleting the web pool and making the web application freeze or slow to respond.
One thing I have noticed is that asynchronous I/O isn't the best option when dealing with very fast I/O operations. In that case the benefit of not keeping a thread busy while waiting for the I/O operation to complete is not very important and the fact that the operation is started on one thread and it is completed on another adds an overhead to the overall execution.

To presume a speed improvement due to any form of multi-computing you must presume either that multiple CPU-based tasks are being executed concurrently upon multiple computing resources (generally processor cores) or else that not all of the tasks rely upon the concurrent usage of the same resource -- that is, some tasks may depend on one system subcomponent (disk storage, say) while some tasks depend on another (receiving communication from a peripheral device) and still others may require usage of processor cores.
The first scenario is often referred to as "parallel" programming. The second scenario is often referred to as "concurrent" or "asynchronous" programming, although "concurrent" is sometimes also used to refer to the case of merely allowing an operating system to interleave execution of multiple tasks, regardless of whether such execution must take place serially or if multiple resources can be used to achieve parallel execution. In this latter case, "concurrent" generally refers to the way that execution is written in the program, rather than from the perspective of the actual simultaneity of task execution.
It's very easy to speak about all of this with tacit assumptions. For example, some are quick to make a claim such as "Asynchronous I/O will be faster than multi-threaded I/O." This claim is dubious for several reasons. First, it could be the case that some given asynchronous I/O framework is implemented precisely with multi-threading, in which case they are one in the same and it doesn't make sense to say one concept "is faster than" the other.
Second, even in the case when there is a single-threaded implementation of an asynchronous framework (such as a single-threaded event loop) you must still make an assumption about what that loop is doing. For example, one silly thing you can do with a single-threaded event loop is request for it to asynchronously complete two different purely CPU-bound tasks. If you did this on a machine with only an idealized single processor core (ignoring modern hardware optimizations) then performing this task "asynchronously" wouldn't really perform any differently than performing it with two independently managed threads, or with just one lone process -- the difference might come down to thread context switching or operating system schedule optimizations, but if both tasks are going to the CPU it would be similar in either case.
It is useful to imagine a lot of the unusual or stupid corner cases you might run into.
"Asynchronous" does not have to be concurrent, for example just as above: you "asynchronously" execute two CPU-bound tasks on a machine with exactly one processor core.
Multi-threaded execution doesn't have to be concurrent: you spawn two threads on a machine with a single processor core, or ask two threads to acquire any other kind of scarce resource (imagine, say, a network database that can only establish one connection at a time). The threads' execution might be interleaved however the operating system scheduler sees fit, but their total runtime cannot be reduced (and will be increased from the thread context switching) on a single core (or more generally, if you spawn more threads than there are cores to run them, or have more threads asking for a resource than what the resource can sustain). This same thing goes for multi-processing as well.
So neither asynchronous I/O nor multi-threading have to offer any performance gain in terms of run time. They can even slow things down.
If you define a specific use case, however, like a specific program that both makes a network call to retrieve data from a network-connected resource like a remote database and also does some local CPU-bound computation, then you can start to reason about the performance differences between the two methods given a particular assumption about hardware.
The questions to ask: How many computational steps do I need to perform and how many independent systems of resources are there to perform them? Are there subsets of the computational steps that require usage of independent system subcomponents and can benefit from doing so concurrently? How many processor cores do I have and what is the overhead for using multiple processors or threads to complete tasks on separate cores?
If your tasks largely rely on independent subsystems, then an asynchronous solution might be good. If the number of threads needed to handle it would be large, such that context switching became non-trivial for the operating system, then a single-threaded asynchronous solution might be better.
Whenever the tasks are bound by the same resource (e.g. multiple needs to concurrently access the same network or local resource), then multi-threading will probably introduce unsatisfactory overhead, and while single-threaded asynchrony may introduce less overhead, in such a resource-limited situation it too cannot produce a speed-up. In such a case, the only option (if you want a speed-up) is to make multiple copies of that resource available (e.g. multiple processor cores if the scarce resource is CPU; a better database that supports more concurrent connections if the scarce resource is a connection-limited database, etc.).
Another way to put it is: allowing the operating system to interleave the usage of a single resource for two tasks cannot be faster than merely letting one task use the resource while the other waits, then letting the second task finish serially. Further, the scheduler cost of interleaving means in any real situation it actually creates a slowdown. It doesn't matter if the interleaved usage occurs of the CPU, a network resource, a memory resource, a peripheral device, or any other system resource.
The main reason to use AIO is for scalability. When viewed in the context of a few threads, the benefits are not obvious. But when the system scales to 1000s of threads, AIO will offer much better performance. The caveat is that AIO library should not introduce further bottlenecks.
One possible implementation of non-blocking I/O is exactly what you said, with a pool of background threads that do blocking I/O and notify the thread of the originator of the I/O via some callback mechanism. In fact, this is how the AIO module in glibc works. Here are some vague details about the implementation.
While this is a good solution that is quite portable (as long as you have threads), the OS is typically able to service non-blocking I/O more efficiently. This Wikipedia article lists possible implementations besides the thread pool.
I am currently in the process of implementing async io on an embedded platform using protothreads. Non blocking io makes the difference between running at 16000fps and 160fps. The biggest benefit of non blocking io is that you can structure your code to do other things while hardware does its thing. Even initialization of devices can be done in parallel.

In Node, multiple threads are being launched, but it's a layer down in the C++ run-time.

The "Node is faster because it's non-blocking..." explanation is a bit of marketing and this is a great question. It's efficient and scaleable, but not exactly single threaded.
The improvement as far as I know is that Asynchronous I/O uses ( I'm talking about MS System, just to clarify ) the so called I/O completion ports. By using the Asynchronous call the framework leverage such architecture automatically, and this is supposed to be much more efficient that standard threading mechanism. As a personal experience I can say that you would sensibly feel your application more reactive if you prefer AsyncCalls instead of blocking threads.
Let me give you a counterexample that asynchronous I/O does not work.

However, the scenario of my case is, incoming (from clients side) messages are fast while outgoing (to server side) is slow for one session, to keep up with the incoming speed or to maximize the total proxy throughput, we have to use multiple sessions under one connection.
Thus this async I/O framework does not work anymore. We do need a thread pool to send to the server by assigning each thread a session.

How to articulate the difference between asynchronous and parallel programming?

Many platforms promote asynchrony and parallelism as means for improving responsiveness. I understand the difference generally, but often find it difficult to articulate in my own mind, as well as for others.
I am a workaday programmer and use async & callbacks fairly often. Parallelism feels exotic.
But I feel like they are easily conflated, especially at the language design level. Would love a clear description of how they relate (or don't), and the classes of programs where each is best applied.
When you run something asynchronously it means it is non-blocking, you execute it without waiting for it to complete and carry on with other things. Parallelism means to run multiple things at the same time, in parallel. Parallelism works well when you can separate tasks into independent pieces of work.
Take for example rendering frames of a 3D animation. To render the animation takes a long time so if you were to launch that render from within your animation editing software you would make sure it was running asynchronously so it didn't lock up your UI and you could continue doing other things. Now, each frame of that animation can also be considered as an individual task. If we have multiple CPUs/Cores or multiple machines available, we can render multiple frames in parallel to speed up the overall workload.
I believe the main distinction is between concurrency and parallelism.
Async and Callbacks are generally a way (tool or mechanism) to express concurrency i.e. a set of entities possibly talking to each other and sharing resources.
In the case of async or callback communication is implicit while sharing of resources is optional (consider RMI where results are computed in a remote machine).
As correctly noted this is usually done with responsiveness in mind; to not wait for long latency events.
Parallel programming has usually throughput as the main objective while latency, i.e. the completion time for a single element, might be worse than a equivalent sequential program.
To better understand the distinction between concurrency and parallelism I am going to quote from Probabilistic models for concurrency of Daniele Varacca which is a good set of notes for theory of concurrency:
A model of computation is a model for concurrency when it is able to represent systems as composed of independent autonomous components, possibly communicating with each other. The notion of concurrency should not be confused with the notion of parallelism. Parallel computations usually involve a central control which distributes the work among several processors. In concurrency we stress the independence of the components, and the fact that they communicate with each other. Parallelism is like ancient Egypt, where the Pharaoh decides and the slaves work. Concurrency is like modern Italy, where everybody does what they want, and all use mobile phones.
In conclusion, parallel programming is somewhat a special case of concurrency where separate entities collaborate to obtain high performance and throughput (generally).
Async and Callbacks are just a mechanism that allows the programmer to express concurrency.
Consider that well-known parallel programming design patterns such as master/worker or map/reduce are implemented by frameworks that use such lower level mechanisms (async) to implement more complex centralized interactions.

My basic understanding is:
Asynchonous programming solves the problem of waiting around for an expensive operation to complete before you can do anything else. If you can get other stuff done while you're waiting for the operation to complete then that's a good thing. Example: keeping a UI running while you go and retrieve more data from a web service.
Parallel programming is related but is more concerned with breaking a large task into smaller chunks that can be computed at the same time. The results of the smaller chunks can then be combined to produce the overall result. Example: ray-tracing where the colour of individual pixels is essentially independent.
It's probably more complicated than that, but I think that's the basic distinction.
I tend to think of the difference in these terms:
Asynchronous: Go away and do this task, when you're finished come back and tell me and bring the results. I'll be getting on with other things in the mean time.
Parallel: I want you to do this task. If it makes it easier, get some folks in to help. This is urgent though, so I'll wait here until you come back with the results. I can do nothing else until you come back.
Of course an asynchronous task might make use of parallelism, but the differentiation - to my mind at least - is whether you get on with other things while the operation is being carried out or if you stop everything completely until the results are in.
It is a question of order of execution.
If A is asynchronous with B, then I cannot predict beforehand when subparts of A will happen with respect to subparts of B.
If A is parallel with B, then things in A are happening at the same time as things in B. However, an order of execution may still be defined.
Perhaps the difficulty is that the word asynchronous is equivocal.
I execute an asynchronous task when I tell my butler to run to the store for more wine and cheese, and then forget about him and work on my novel until he knocks on the study door again. Parallelism is happening here, but the butler and I are engaged in fundamentally different tasks and of different social classes, so we don't apply that label here.
My team of maids is working in parallel when each of them is washing a different window.
My race car support team is asynchronously parallel in that each team works on a different tire and they don't need to communicate with each other or manage shared resources while they do their job.
My football (aka soccer) team does parallel work as each player independently processes information about the field and moves about on it, but they are not fully asynchronous because they must communicate and respond to the communication of others.
My marching band is also parallel as each player reads music and controls their instrument, but they are highly synchronous: they play and march in time to each other.

Why Asynchronous ?
With today's application's growing more and more connected and also potentially
long running tasks or blocking operations such as Network I/O or Database Operations.So it's very important to hide the latency of these operations by starting them in background and returning back to the user interface quickly as possible. Here Asynchronous come in to the picture, Responsiveness.
Why parallel programming?
With today's data sets growing larger and computations growing more complex. So it's very important to reduce the execution time of these CPU-bound operations, in this case, by dividing the workload into chunks and then executing those chunks simultaneously. We can call this as "Parallel" .
Obviously it will give high Performance to our application.
Asynchronous
Let's say you are the point of contact for your client and you need to be responsive i.e. you need to share status, complexity of operation, resources required etc whenever asked. Now you have a time-consuming operation to be done and hence cannot take this up as you need to be responsive to the client 24/7. Hence, you delegate the time-consuming operation to someone else so that you can be responsive. This is asynchronous.
Parallel programming
Let's say you have a task to read, say, 100 lines from a text file, and reading one line takes 1 second. Hence, you'll require 100 seconds to read the text file. Now you're worried that the client must wait for 100 seconds for the operation to finish. Hence you create 9 more clones and make each of them read 10 lines from the text file. Now the time taken is only 10 seconds to read 100 lines. Hence you have better performance.
To sum up, asynchronous coding is done to achieve responsiveness and parallel programming is done for performance.
Asynchronous: Running a method or task in background, without blocking. May not necessorily run on a separate thread. Uses Context Switching / time scheduling.
Parallel Tasks: Each task runs parallally. Does not use context switching / time scheduling.
I came here fairly comfortable with the two concepts, but with something not clear to me about them.
After reading through some of the answers, I think I have a correct and helpful metaphor to describe the difference.
If you think of your individual lines of code as separate but ordered playing cards (stop me if I am explaining how old-school punch cards work), then for each separate procedure written, you will have a unique stack of cards (don't copy & paste!) and the difference between what normally goes on when run code normally and asynchronously depends on whether you care or not.
When you run the code, you hand the OS a set of single operations (that your compiler or interpreter broke your "higher" level code into) to be passed to the processor. With one processor, only one line of code can be executed at any one time. So, in order to accomplish the illusion of running multiple processes at the same time, the OS uses a technique in which it sends the processor only a few lines from a given process at a time, switching between all the processes according to how it sees fit. The result is multiple processes showing progress to the end user at what seems to be the same time.
For our metaphor, the relationship is that the OS always shuffles the cards before sending them to the processor. If your stack of cards doesn't depend on another stack, you don't notice that your stack stopped getting selected from while another stack became active. So if you don't care, it doesn't matter.
However, if you do care (e.g., there are multiple processes - or stacks of cards - that do depend on each other), then the OS's shuffling will screw up your results.
Writing asynchronous code requires handling the dependencies between the order of execution regardless of what that ordering ends up being. This is why constructs like "call-backs" are used. They say to the processor, "the next thing to do is tell the other stack what we did". By using such tools, you can be assured that the other stack gets notified before it allows the OS to run any more of its instructions. ("If called_back == false: send(no_operation)" - not sure if this is actually how it is implemented, but logically, I think it is consistent.)
For parallel processes, the difference is that you have two stacks that don't care about each other and two workers to process them. At the end of the day, you may need to combine the results from the two stacks, which would then be a matter of synchronicity but, for execution, you don't care again.
Not sure if this helps but, I always find multiple explanations helpful. Also, note that asynchronous execution is not constrained to an individual computer and its processors. Generally speaking, it deals with time, or (even more generally speaking) an order of events. So if you send dependent stack A to network node X and its coupled stack B to Y, the correct asynchronous code should be able to account for the situation as if it was running locally on your laptop.
Generally, there are only two ways you can do more than one thing each time. One is asynchronous, the other is parallel.
From the high level, like the popular server NGINX and famous Python library Tornado, they both fully utilize asynchronous paradigm which is Single thread server could simultaneously serve thousands of clients (some IOloop and callback). Using ECF(exception control follow) which could implement the asynchronous programming paradigm. so asynchronous sometimes doesn't really do thing simultaneous, but some io bound work, asynchronous could really promotes the performance.
The parallel paradigm always refers multi-threading, and multiprocessing. This can fully utilize multi-core processors, do things really simultaneously.

Why are message queues used insted of mulithreading?

I have the following query which i need someone to please help me with.Im new to message queues and have recently started looking at the Kestrel message queue.
As i understand,both threads and message queues are used for concurrency in applications so what is the advantage of using message queues over multitreading ?

message queues allow you to communicate outside your program.
This allows you to decouple your producer from your consumer. You can spread the work to be done over several processes and machines, and you can manage/upgrade/move around those programs independently of each other.
A message queue also typically consists of one or more brokers that takes care of distributing your messages and making sure the messages are not lost in case something bad happens (e.g. your program crashes, you upgrade one of your programs etc.)
Message queues might also be used internally in a program, in which case it's often just a facility to exchange/queue data from a producer thread to a consumer thread to do async processing.
Actually, one facilitates the other. Message queue is a nice and simple multithreading pattern: when you have a control thread (usually, but not necessarily an application's main thread) and a pool of (usually looping) worker threads, message queues are the easiest way to facilitate control over the thread pool.
For example, to start processing a relatively heavy task, you submit a corresponding message into the queue. If you have more messages, than you can currently process, your queue grows, and if less, it goes vice versa. When your message queue is empty, your threads sleep (usually by staying locked under a mutex).
So, there is nothing to compare: message queues are part of multithreading and hence they're used in some more complicated cases of multithreading.
Creating threads is expensive, and every thread that is simultaneously "live" will add a certain amount of overhead, even if the thread is blocked waiting for something to happen. If program Foo has 1,000 tasks to be performed and doesn't really care in what order they get done, it might be possible to create 1,000 threads and have each thread perform one task, but such an approach would not be terribly efficient. An second alternative would be to have one thread perform all 1,000 tasks in sequence. If there were other processes in the system that could employ any CPU time that Foo didn't use, this latter approach would be efficient (and quite possibly optimal), but if there isn't enough work to keep all CPUs busy, CPUs would waste some time sitting idle. In most cases, leaving a CPU idle for a second is just as expensive as spending a second of CPU time (the main exception is when one is trying to minimize electrical energy consumption, since an idling CPU may consume far less power than a busy one).
In most cases, the best strategy is a compromise between those two approaches: have some number of threads (say 10) that start performing the first ten tasks. Each time a thread finishes a task, have it start work on another until all tasks have been completed. Using this approach, the overhead related to threading will be cut by 99%, and the only extra cost will be the queue of tasks that haven't yet been started. Since a queue entry is apt to be much cheaper than a thread (likely less than 1% of the cost, and perhaps less than 0.01%), this can represent a really huge savings.
The one major problem with using a job queue rather than threading is that if some jobs cannot complete until jobs later in the list have run, it's possible for the system to become deadlocked since the later tasks won't run until the earlier tasks have completed. If each task had been given a separate thread, that problem would not occur since the threads associated with the later tasks would eventually manage to complete and thus let the earlier ones proceed. Indeed, the more earlier tasks were blocked, the more CPU time would be available to run the later ones.
It makes more sense to contrast message queues and other concurrency primitives, such as semaphores, mutex, condition variables, etc. They can all be used in the presence of threads, though message-passing is also commonly used in non-threaded contexts, such as inter-process communication, whereas the others tend to be confined to inter-thread communication and synchronisation.
The short answer is that message-passing is easier on the brain. In detail...
Message-passing works by sending stuff from one agent to another. There is generally no need to coordinate access to the data. Once an agent receives a message it can usually assume that it has unqualified access to that data.
The "threading" style works by giving all agent open-slather access to shared data but requiring them to carefully coordinate their access via primitives. If one agent misbehaves, the process becomes corrupted and all hell breaks loose. Message passing tends to confine problems to the misbehaving agent and its cohort, and since agents are generally self-contained and often programmed in a sequential or state-machine style, they tend not to misbehave as often — or as mysteriously — as conventional threaded code.
