I've done some research and I can't find the reason to why the USB ports stop working when trying to boot ubuntu

I've looked around a lot at many people's different questions and can't find one that is the same situation as the problem I'm having. Essentially a friend brought me an old PC of theirs with the request that there are some files they want taken off the hard drive. Unfortunately, their version of Windows had corrupted, so my solution was to boot Ubuntu from a USB drive without affecting the hard drive, to access the files and then the computer is going to scrap anyway. Unfortunately, as soon as the ubuntu software starts to load the lights on the keyboard and mouse turn off and when I eventually get to the option of 'Try Ubuntu', neither are responsive. I've tried restarting, I've tried different ports, I've tried unplugging and plugging back in, I've tried a different keyboard and mouse but I cannot find a solution. I installed the latest version of ubuntu from their website. I can use the keyboard in the BIOS settings etc. Anyone know what is happening? All help is greatly appreciated.

Annoying external monitor scaling

Two days ago I updated my RubyMine and WebStorm installs to the latest version (v2017.2) and immediately had issues with scaling on my external monitors. My laptop has a 4k screen and I use twin full HD external monitors. Normally when I slide an app window from 4k --> Full HD the window and fonts shrink appropriately and the reverse happens going the other way.
I thought I did something wrong before I updated or applied some weird software/system setting so I looked at my preference settings and I played around with my monitor resolutions and scalings. Nothing made the apps appear the way it did before the update. I uninstalled the software and downgraded to the previous versions (v2017.1.x) and it worked again!!!
Has anyone else seen this behavior? Have you been able to figure out why it happens and what you did to fix it?

How to Diagnose a Flashing Red Light on Dell PowerEdge 1950

The server has a flashing red light in the back of it while all the HDD seem to be working fine. How can I run a diagnostics test to figure out what the flashing light means? This is windows Server 2003 on a Dell PowerEdge 1950.
Flashing Light Image
P.S. I realize this is completely outdated and it will be replaced soon, but for now it is running a required application of ours so please don't scold too much (I'm only in charge of fixing it =))
The user's manual for the 1950 calls this the system status indicator light but doesn't provide any further details. Is the LCD on the front panel displaying an error code, perhaps. Error codes are listed in the manual so maybe that will help.
From a visual inspection, do both power supplies (if you have dual supplies) appear to be working? Any screeching noises or rubbing sounds? Can you hear the fans spinning inside the chassis? Are there any PCI or PCIe cards plugged into backplane? Does removing them and rebooting clear the light? While booting, are there any error messages showing that you can't account for?
Good luck.
Buy a new server and copy over the HDD's diagnostics only do so much and I would be surprised if it lasts another month.
From a pentesting point of view it takes about 30 seconds to breach a windows server 2003 box via various vulnerabilities.
You are going to pay more to fix it then to get a new server.

Windows 10 Black Screen and Spring Tools Suite?

I just got a new laptop that came with Windows 10 Operating System. I'm trying to setup workspaces that use Spring Tools Suite on my system. I've tried both the 4.5.2 and 4.6 versions of STS from the site.
The problem I'm encountering is that if I leave STS open for a period of time or if I try to perform certain operations such as a Run Configuration I will just see a black screen and am unable to do anything.
Anytime I see the black screen the only common thing is that I had STS open, so my assumption is that the issue may relate to STS. I could be completely wrong and this be unrelated to STS entirely but I can only reproduce the problem when STS has been open.
Two Questions, can anyone please provide any insight as my searches online aren't providing any resolution
1. Any special configuration others have run into for Windows 10 and STS?
2. If I get the black screen, how can I recover other than a hard power off, others experience with this?
Thanks for your input
I've been able to get past this issue by updating a number of drivers on my machine from Dell support page. I use a Dell Precision 5510 and was able to go to Dell support site and search for drivers for my machine.
I did the following Steps to fix my Precision 5510
Go to Dell Support Page
Click on Support
Click on Drivers and Downloads
Click on tab 'Find it myself' so you can select drivers you want
Scroll to bottom of the page and click on the line highlighted in blue that reads, Browse all drivers for Precision 5510
In list of drivers choose Chipset drivers
There may be other drivers that you need to install but adding the following fixed my issues
Be sure to restart your machine after install/update of each driver
Basic Input/Output System (BIOS)
Intel(R) Thunderbol 3 Controller Driver
Install the Firmware Update
Realtek USB GBE Ethernet Controller Driver
Realtek USB Audio Driver
Patch for the USB audio/mouse issue
Combination of the above or one of the drivers fixed my issue, I'm not certain which one Spring Tools depended on but it does not crash to a black screen now after updating these drivers.
