I am a teacher trying to track progress of my students' grades over 3 assessments using Excel. Unfortunately, absences can cause blank values to occur within the columns. I would do (ex. P2, Q2, R2 contain data and S2 being the progress made between P2 and R2) =R2-P2, which would work, but it would not work if a student was absent and did not have a value within P2 or R2. Ideally, I would like to keep the formula consistent throughout the entire progress column.
As shown in the example, columns P, Q, R are the assessments and S is the overall progress. For Column S, I would like to show the overall growth that was made between these assessments. However, the issue is that sometimes, students are not able to be in attendance for these assessments, so the cell will be blank. The formula mentioned by Spectral Instance worked when P and R only had values, but did not work when just P or just R were missing. The last two rows show where the formula did not work correctly. In those instances, I would like to then only show progress with the assessments did take. Is there a formula that will work universally no matter which of the 3 columns are missing data?
This is shown in the example in the photo that is attached.
EXAMPLE
Can someone please provide insight as to how I can correctly track progress?
Assuming that you have headers in Row 1, that data begins in Row 2, and that the only data down the columns is score data — delete everything in Col D (including the header). Then place the following formula in D1:
=ArrayFormula({"Progress";IF(MMULT(IF(A2:C>0,1,0),{1;1;1})<2,,REGEXEXTRACT(A2:A&"~"&B2:B&"~"&C2:C,"(\d+)~*$")-REGEXEXTRACT(A2:A&"~"&B2:B&"~"&C2:C,"^~*(\d+)"))})
This one formula will return the header (which you can change as you like within the formula itself) and all results for all rows where there are at least two entries. If there are fewer than two entries, null will be returned. You will not drag this formula down.
Understand that this is an array formula that will "own" all of Col D. So you will not be able to type anything into Col D manually without "breaking the array" (which will result in an error in cell D1 and all rows of formulaic data being blank).
As to how the formula works, MMULT (as used here) just counts valid values row-by-row. IF uses that count to determine if there are at least two values.
The two commas together is actually "comma-null" (meaning return null if the count of values is less than 2 in any row).
Otherwise, REGEXEXTRACT will act on a concatenation of all cell values with a tilde ~ separating them. The last value present will be taken from which the first value will be subtracted.
I cannot fully explain MMULT nor REGEX2 expressions in this post, but I trust the gist is clear.
Once again, thank you all for your insight and feedback. I apologize if this is a small fix that I am maybe missing.

The first table below shows how much each person owes and who pays it (it's part of a larger model so I simplified it for our purposes here).
Our goal in the second table below is to give a sum when both the column and row value match.
For example: A (column C) paid $244.17 (D36:H48) in expenses for B (row 35).
Where am I wrong here? I have tried different methods suggested here.
This is another alternative, that only requires to extend the formula down, but not to the left, because on each row it returns an array with all column values. In cell I3 enter the following formula:
=MMULT(N(TRANSPOSE($A$3:$A$15=H3)),IF($B$3:$F$15="", 0, $B$3:$F$15))
or using LET to avoid repetition of the same range:
=LET(set, $B$3:$F$15, MMULT(N(TRANSPOSE($A$3:$A$15=H3)),IF(set="", 0, set))
Notes:
MMULT only works with numeric values, so empty cells need to be converted.
You can replace TRANSPOSE with TOROW if you want.
$-notation is not required in H3, because we extend the formula only down
Here is the output:
Note: This solution assumes header values to compare are the same, i.e. same values for Paid For (I2:M2) and Paid By (H3:H7). Which is the most common situation. That is why in the formula only Paid By column is used. If that is not the case, then the solution provided by #JB-007 is more flexible, because the values can be different, but then you need to extend the formula in both directions.
screenshot/s here refer:
=SUM($C$4:$E$6*($C$3:$E$3=C$8)*($B$4:$B$6=$B9))
(sumifs will really struglly to work across different dimensions)
PS - as you'll see most will advise sumproduct - I think it's overdue deprecation because there's very little (if anything) you can do with sumproduct that you cannot with sum. You can even do counts with sum SUM(1*($C$3:$E$3=C$8)*($B$4:$B$6=$B9))) returns the count of where these values are equivalent...
Save yourself the extra seven letters over and over! ☺
Firstly, apologies if this is covered somewhere deep within the site, I have looked through a lot of other posts and none of the solutions have worked for me.
I'm creating a workbook for a local league I'm involved in and this is the only sticking point I'm coming up against.
In cell J55, I have the formula:
=IF(C11=H55, COUNTIF(D11, "="&E11),0)+IF(C19=H55, COUNTIF(D19, "="&E19),0)
(I've simplified this to only look at rows 11 & 19 for the purposes of this question)
So what I'm essentially saying is if the team name is equal to the corresponding name in the table, count if the scores for both teams are equal. Basically I'm trying to get the number of games that end in a draw.
So at it's core, my formula is looking for whether 2 cells are equal. This is fine, other than it is counting even if the score cells are blank.
So if you refer to the below image, in J55, I'm getting the returned value of "2". However for the values I've populated in the results (just the scores in the first game) it should be returning a value of "1".
If anybody can help in any way it would be a great help.
To count the number of Draws this formula which performs array like calculations will count the number of occurences where where the team name in H55 is equal to the team name in column D or F and when the scores in column D and E are equal:
=SUMPRODUCT((($C$11:$C$21=H55)+($F$11:$F$21=H55))*($D$11:$D$21=$E$11:$E$21)*($D$11:$D$21<>"")*($E$11:$E$21<>""))
Copy down as required.
COUNTIFS options
Based on your formula above, adding the checking for not blank cells using COUNTIFS.
=IF(C11=H55, COUNTIFS(D11, "="&E11,D11,"<>"&""),0)+IF(C19=H55, COUNTIFS(D19, "="&E19,D19,"<>"&""),0)
COUNTIFS is probably the slightly better option as it does not use array calculations. However for a small data set it wont make a noticeable difference in calculation time for most users.
So I am trying to create a spreadsheet at allows a character in game to total the party inventory.
I am trying to sumif multiple columns based on the same criteria.
So say I am trying to sum all the rope they have.
In column A is the Item descriptions
In columns B-E are the different totals for each party member (one column per person)
Each party member has 50 rope, so I am expecting 200 rope.
I have used this formula:
=SUMIF(A:A,"Rope: Hemp",B:E) and it is only returning 50 as a value, If I utilise cell values (A1:A100 etc.) it returns a value of Zero.
I have been told that Sum Product could works so I also tried that:
=SUMPRODUCT((A1:A100="Rope: Hemp")*(B3:E100)) and I still get the incorrect result.
What am I doing wrong?
EDIT:
Here are some photos.
Here is my Raw Data. As you can see I have the inventory and tallies, when you look at rope it says 150, and this was calcualted by summing the B to E cells, however as the list is going to move and grow I thought SUMIF would be better.
As stated above, I have used a SUMIF making the range Columns B through E, and it only returns a value of 50 (I'm assuming Column B)
so came up with this:
=SUMIF(A3:A40,"="&J17&"",B3:B40)+SUMIF(A3:A40,"="&J17&"",C3:C40)+SUMIF(A3:A40,"="&J17&"",D3:D40)+SUMIF(A3:A40,"="&J17&"",E3:E40)
Which works, but I can only assume that sumif only work with ONE target range... And I tried curly brackets as well...
So, I did also use cell J17 for the object you are looking for, so you can drag it down, the "*" will find all occurences of "Rope: Hemp", or "Rope: Nylon" etc. I get a total of 150 as there are only 3 characters with rope...
Hope it helps. Someone else may have a better / neater suggestion!
I just tested it by entering Rope, rapier and rations into J17 and got the results I expect.
Image of spreadsheet:
I'm working on data from a population of people with allergies. Each person has a unique ExceptionID, and each allergen has a unique AllergenID (451 in total).
I have a data table with 2 columns (ExceptionID and AllergenID), where each person's allergies are listed row by row. This means that the ExceptionID column has repeated values for people with multiple allergies, and the AllergenID column has repeated values for the different people who have that allergy.
I am trying to count how many times each pair of allergies is present in this population (e.g. Allergen#107 & Allergen#108, Allergen#107 & Allergen#109,etc). To keep it simple I've created a matrix of 451 rows X 451 columns, representing every pair (twice actually because A/B and B/A are equivalent).
I somehow need to use the row name (allergenID) to lookup the ExceptionID in my data table, and count the cases where that matches the ExceptionIDs from the column name (also AllergenID). I have no problem using Vlookup or Index/Match, but I'm struggling with the correct combination of a lookup and Sumproduct or Countif formula.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Mike
PS I'm using Excel 2016 if that changes anything.
-=UPDATE=-
So the methods suggested by Dirk and MacroMarc both worked, though I couldn't apply the latter to my full data set (17,000+ rows) because it was taking a long time.
I've since decided to turn this into a VBA macro because we now want to see the counts of triplets instead of pairs.
With the 2 columns you start with, it is as good as impossible... You would need to check every ExceptionID to have 2 different specific AllergenID. Better use a helper-table with ExceptionID as rows and AllergenID as columns (or the opposite... whatever you like). The helper table needs a formula like:
=COUNTIFS($A:$A,$D2,$B:$B,E$1)
Which then can be auto-filled. (The ranges are from my example, you need to change them to your needs).
With this helper-matrix you can easily go for your bigger matrix like this:
=COUNTIFS(E:E,1,INDEX($E:$G,,MATCH($I2,$E$1:$G$1,0)),1)
Again, you can auto-fill with this formula, but you need to change it, so it fits your needs.
Because the columns have the same ID2 (would be your AllergenID), there is no need to lookup them because E:E changes automatically with the auto-fill.
Most important part of the formulas are the $ which should not be messed up, or you can not auto-fill it.
Picture of my self-made example (formulas are from the upper left cell in each table):
If you still have any questions, just ask :)
It can be done straight from your original set-up with array formulas:
Please note that array formulas MUST be entered with Ctrl-Shift-Enter, before copying across and down:
In the example pic, I have NAMED the data ranges $A$2:$A$21 as 'People' and $B$2:$B$21 as 'Allergens' to make it a nicer set-up. You can see in the formula bar how that looks as a formula. However you could use the standard references like this in your first matrix cell:
EDIT: silly me, N function is not needed to turn the booleans into 1's and 0's, since multiplying booleans will do the trick. Below formula works...
SUM(IF(MATCH($A$2:$A$21,$A$2:$A$21,0)=ROW($A$2:$A$21)-1, NOT(ISERROR(MATCH($A$2:$A$21&$E2,$A$2:$A$21&$B$2:$B$21,0)))*NOT(ISERROR(MATCH($A$2:$A$21&F$1, $A$2:$A$21&$B$2:$B$21,0))), 0))
Then copy from F2 across and down. It can be perhaps improved in technique with sumproduct or whatever, but it's just a rough example of the technique....
I have tried to see if this question has been asked before, but I can't seem to find an answer.
I have a column of cells (>3000 rows), with either a value of 1 or 0 (call this column A). The value will depend on the value in column B (which will contain either a value or nothing). The values in column B are a SUMIFS function based, summing from column C, and based on months in column D.
The values in B are paid out on the first business day of the next month. So, the SUMIFS function will calculate the dates that match the last month. This works well in theory, however, not every first business day is the first day of the month. This leads the SUMIFS function to not include everything in the correct month, and allows for some discrepancy, which, when you are dealing with people's money is not great. Further, this discrepancy is compounded across multiple periods (in some cases, there are over 100 periods, and a discrepancy of $1 in period 1 amounts to nearly $1000 in period 100)
What I am wondering is:
Is there any way that I can tell the SUMIFS function (column B) to stop when the value in column A is 0? This would tell the SUM function start the summing from the current value in column B and continue the function to the cell below the preceding value in column B.
I've seen suggestions that the MATCH function may work, but I can't see how to do this with either COUNT or SUM.
For security reasons, this solution needs to be entered into the cell, and can't be VBA. Also, it can't be too large, as it will need to be replicated across 200 worksheets in the workbook (not my file originally, and I would have done it differently, but that is another story). There is no problem entering another column or two if that is required.
Any help is gratefully appreciated.
EDIT:
Unfortunately, I can't post an image of the screenshot. I've included a similar screenshot (columns are not the same layout, but hopefully it gives the idea) here:
Rates calculations
The SUMIF formula is (for B2)
=SUMIFS(C2:C35,D2:D35,D2-1,A2:A35,1)
This works fine if I want all the values in the month, irrelevant of when the payment was made.
However, what I need the formula to do is:
SUM (C2:C35,D2:D35,D2-1, but stop when the first 0 is encountered in A2:A35)
Thanks
The INDEX function can provide a valid cell reference to stop using a MATCH function to find an exact match on 0.
This formula is a bit of a guess as there was no sample data to reference but I believe I have understood your parameters.
=SUMIFS(C2:index(C2:C35, match(0, A2:A35, 0)), D2:index(D2:D35, match(0, A2:A35, 0)), D2-1)
This seems to be something that will stand-alone and not be filled down so I have left the cell addresses relative as per your sample(s).
