Pragmatics of Pagination with Cassandra - cassandra

This is more of a pragmatical question in regards to implementing pagination with the usage of Cassandra. I have read the documentation in regards to the Page state and that it should not be exposed to end user as it is not encrypted and creates the possibility of unwanted tampering.
So, with all that said, my question is what are the pragmatics and best practices in terms of using the PageState object when implementing an API that needs to fetch the next records in line upon scrolling?

After re-reading your question, I think I understand now what you're trying to achieve.
You are correct in saying that you shouldn't expose the page state to end-users of your application. I don't think there will be anything catastrophic if the page state is modified/tampered by a user but if they do, it will either return unpredictable results or be unusable and the driver will throw an exception.
On your question of what is best practice when implementing an API to retrieve the next "page" of results, I would recommend separating the implementation of your API from the logic which requests the records from the DB.
For example, don't use the driver's page state in your API but instead implement an option page=next so the HTTP endpoint looks like /api/users?page=next. Cheers!

Rest API real time Tricky Question- Need Answer

I was recently interviewed by a MNC technical panel and they asked me different questions related to RestAPI , i was able to answer all but below 2 questions though i answered but not sure if those are correct answers. Can somebody answer my queries with real time examples
1) How can i secure my Rest API when somebody send request from Postman.The user provides all the correct information in the header like session id, Token etc.
My answer was: The users token sent in the header of the request should be associated with the successfully authenticated user info then only the user will be granted access if the Request either comes from Postman or application calls these API.(The panel said no to my answer)
2) How can i handle concurrency in Rest API Means if multiple users are trying to access the API at the same given time (For e.g multiple post request are coming to update data in a table) how will you make sure one request is served at one time and accordingly the values are updated as requested by different user request.
2) My answer was: In Entitiy framework we have a class called DbUpdateConcurrencyException, This class takes of handling concurrency and serves one request is served at a time.
I am not sure about my both the above answers and i did not find any specific answer on Googling also.

1) It is not possible, requests from Postman or any other client or proxy (Burp, ZAP, etc) are indistinguishable from browser requests, if the user has appropriate credentials (like for example can observe and copy normal requests). It is not possible to authenticate the client application, only the client user.
2) It would be really bad if a web application could only serve one client at a time. Think of large traffic like Facebook. :) In many (maybe most?) stacks, each request gets its own thread (or similar) to run, and that finishes when the request-response ends. These threads are not supposed to directly communicate with each other while running. Data consistency is a requirement of the persistence technology, ie. if you are using a database for example, it must guarantee that database queries are run one after the other. Note that if an application runs multiple queries, database transactions or locks need to be used on the database level to maintain consistency. But this is not at all about client requests, it's about how you use your persistence technology to achieve consistent data. With traditional RDBMS it's mostly easy, with other persistence technologies (like for example using plaintext files for storage) it's much harder, because file operations typically don't support a facility similar to transactions (but they do support locks, which you have to manage manually).

Is there ever a need to have GET request API as POST is better in every way?

So we were starting a new project from scratch and one of the developers suggested why have any GET API requests as POST API's are better in every which way. (At least when using a mobile client)
On further looking into this it does seem POST can do everything GET can do and it can do it better -
slightly more secure as parameters are not in URL
larger limit than GET request
So is there even a single reason to have a GET API ? (This will only be used from a mobile client so browser specific cacheing doesn't affect us)

In general, yes. In your specific circumstances -- maybe no.
GET and POST are method tokens.
The request method token is the primary source of request semantics
They are a form of meta data included in the http request so that general purpose components can be aware of the request semantics and contribute constructively.
POST is, in a sense, the wildcard method - it can mean anything. But one of the consequences of this is - because the method has unconstrained semantics, general purpose components can't do anything useful other than pass the request along.
GET, however, has safe semantics (which includes idempotent semantics). Because the request is idempotent, general purpose components know that they can resend a GET request when the server returns no response (ie messages being lost on unreliable transport); general purpose components can know that representations of the resource can be pre-fetched, reducing perceived latency.
You dismissed caching as a concern earlier, but you may want to rethink that - the cache constraint is an important element that helped the web take over the world.
Reducing everything to POST reduces HTTP from an application for transferring documents over a network to dumb transport.
Using HTTP for transport isn't necessarily wrong: Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) works that way, as does gRPC. You still get authorization, and conditional requests; features of HTTP that you might otherwise need to roll your own.
You aren't doing REST at that point, but that's OK; not everybody has to.
That doesn’t mean that I think everyone should design their own systems according to the REST architectural style. REST is intended for long-lived network-based applications that span multiple organizations. If you don’t see a need for the constraints, then don’t use them. (Fielding, 2008)

Best way to store answers from users in Facebook bot chat?

Building a Facebook messenger bot using Claudia JS and plan on hosting on AWS Lambda.
I want to ask the user a series of questions.
When a user responds with an answer, I need to save that for later and once I have all the information I need, I will pass the answers to a function.
What is the best way to save this information?
I was thinking some caching layer such as redis but because that is stored in RAM I will lose it when lamda server shuts down. Mongodb apparently has a lot of overheads when connecting but will at least be persistent.
Perhaps just a simple mySQL server?
How does everybody else do it? I feel like there is a simple solution that I am missing.
I will first answer the part about how I'm doing it: I'm using a MongoDB. I toyed with the ideas you mentioned, but quickly crossed out in-memory solutions (Memcached, Redis) with the same reason. My final solution came down to either a relational DB or a noSQL like MongoDB. To be honest, at my project's scale, I did not think about robustly comparing performance between DB types.
With my particular feature "roadmap," I decided to go with Mongo to approach a more "OOP" style when dealing with the user "object" without having to explicitly define a user class, thanks to the normalized structure of Mongo. I understand the same could be done for MySQL, too, just that processing json data is more "object-like" for me and flask, i.e. user = getUserFromMongo, which gives me a dict in Python then I can just do user['first_name']. The codes belows will explain this simplicity:
(Somehow this was feeling like... not having to write SQL commands for simple database interaction in Rails)

Finally, as to how I manage user input, I adopted Wit.ai's concept of context. I don't know how they do it exactly, but a context to me is the type of conversation purpose that is going on. I use it like a stack, and as soon as the current context is done, pop it off the context data of the user. For every message the bot receives, the program will get the current context and direct the flow. Whenever an unknown error occurs (exceptions handling), most likely because the user is saying something the bot doesn't understand, I clear the context data, too.
The good part about MongoDB is that I can shape the context however I want and treat it just as an object. A simple one is like {name: yelp-search, stage:ask-for-user-location}, and I imagine complex ones could be built on that structure, too. Of course, a stack implementation of the context does not deal with complex conversation with complex past reference.

i have also used mysql for chatbot but i have used NodeJS for the backend app.For that mysql module would be very helpful.
You need to store users' current state for the question answer session and also store the answer itself from the user and you need to make a switch or if-else-if case for asking questions to user based on its state as switch(state) and in cases of switch just update it's state.and you have user's facebook-id in event object of chatbot so that you can store data of each user individually with their state and question-answer in different table.
For e.g. define flags{1,2,3}
user's state will be 1 in begining so ask him for e.g. question-1
only,and store this as answer-1, you can do this by it's state
checking, and after this update status to 2.
so,in this way you can ask each individual student question as per
their state and answer him.

Breeze.js - Securing IQueryable calls

I'm rather new at this, but I've come to understand the security risks of using Breeze to expose an IQueryable<>. Would someone please suggest to me some best practices (or merely some recommendations) for securing an IQueryable collection that's exposed in the JavaScript? Thanks.
I would not expose any data via IQueryable that should nto be sent to the client via a random query. So a projection could be exposed or a DTO.

I second this question, too. But to add some specifics along the questions that Ward asked:
In securing queryable services, two traditional issues come to mind:
1) Vertical security: Which items is the currently logged in user (based on user identity or roles) NOT allowed to see in the UI. Those need to be removed from the queryable list. IMO, this can be done as part of the queryable ActionFilter magic by chaining some exclude logic on the returned IQueryable.
2) Horizontal security: Some models contain fields that are not appropriate for the logged in user to see (and/or edit). This is more difficult to handle as it's not a matter of just removing instances from the returned IQueryable. The returned class has a different shape and therefore can be handled either by the json formatter omitting the fields based on security (which AFAIK screws up breeze meta data) or you return a DTO in which case since the DTO doesn't exist in the metadata it's not a full life cycle (updatable) class? (I am asking this not stating it)
I would like to see either built-in support or easy to implement recipes for number 2). Perhaps some sample code to amend the client side metadata to make DTOs work perfectly fine comingled with model objects. The newset VS 2012 SPA templates (in the TodoList app) seem to push DTO variants of the model object both on the queryable and insert/update side. This is similar to the traditional MVC modelviews...
Finally - I'd add a request to auto-handling of the overposting security issue for inserts and updates. This is the reciprocal aspect of 2). Some users should not be able to edit certain fields.

What can POST do, GET can't do? [duplicate]

From what I can gather, there are three categories:
Never use GET and use POST
Never use POST and use GET
It doesn't matter which one you use.
Am I correct in assuming those three cases? If so, what are some examples from each case?
Use POST for destructive actions such as creation (I'm aware of the irony), editing, and deletion, because you can't hit a POST action in the address bar of your browser. Use GET when it's safe to allow a person to call an action. So a URL like:
http://myblog.org/admin/posts/delete/357
Should bring you to a confirmation page, rather than simply deleting the item. It's far easier to avoid accidents this way.
POST is also more secure than GET, because you aren't sticking information into a URL. And so using GET as the method for an HTML form that collects a password or other sensitive information is not the best idea.
One final note: POST can transmit a larger amount of information than GET. 'POST' has no size restrictions for transmitted data, whilst 'GET' is limited to 2048 characters.

There is a proper place for each. Even if you don't follow RESTful principles, a lot can be gained from learning about REST and how a resource oriented approach works.
A RESTful application will use GETs for operations which are both safe and idempotent.
A safe operation is an operation which does not change the data requested.
An idempotent operation is one in which the result will be the same no matter how many times you request it.
It stands to reason that, as GETs are used for safe operations they are automatically also idempotent. Typically a GET is used for retrieving a resource (a question and its associated answers on stack overflow for example) or collection of resources.
A RESTful app will use PUTs for operations which are not safe but idempotent.
I know the question was about GET and POST, but I'll return to POST in a second.
Typically a PUT is used for editing a resource (editing a question or an answer on stack overflow for example).
A POST would be used for any operation which is neither safe or idempotent.
Typically a POST would be used to create a new resource for example creating a NEW SO question (though in some designs a PUT would be used for this also).
If you run the POST twice you would end up creating TWO new questions.
There's also a DELETE operation, but I'm guessing I can leave that there :)
Discussion
In practical terms modern web browsers typically only support GET and POST reliably (you can perform all of these operations via javascript calls, but in terms of entering data in forms and pressing submit you've generally got the two options). In a RESTful application the POST will often be overriden to provide the PUT and DELETE calls also.
But, even if you are not following RESTful principles, it can be useful to think in terms of using GET for retrieving / viewing information and POST for creating / editing information.
You should never use GET for an operation which alters data. If a search engine crawls a link to your evil op, or the client bookmarks it could spell big trouble.
Use GET if you don't mind the request being repeated (That is it doesn't change state).
Use POST if the operation does change the system's state.
Short Version
GET: Usually used for submitted search requests, or any request where you want the user to be able to pull up the exact page again.
Advantages of GET:
URLs can be bookmarked safely.
Pages can be reloaded safely.

9.3 GET

The first important thing is the meaning of GET versus POST :
GET should be used to... get... some information from the server,
while POST should be used to send some information to the server.
After that, a couple of things that can be noted :
Using GET, your users can use the "back" button in their browser, and they can bookmark pages
There is a limit in the size of the parameters you can pass as GET (2KB for some versions of Internet Explorer, if I'm not mistaken) ; the limit is much more for POST, and generally depends on the server's configuration.
Anyway, I don't think we could "live" without GET : think of how many URLs you are using with parameters in the query string, every day -- without GET, all those wouldn't work ;-)
Apart from the length constraints difference in many web browsers, there is also a semantic difference. GETs are supposed to be "safe" in that they are read-only operations that don't change the server state. POSTs will typically change state and will give warnings on resubmission. Search engines' web crawlers may make GETs but should never make POSTs.
Use GET if you want to read data without changing state, and use POST if you want to update state on the server.
My general rule of thumb is to use Get when you are making requests to the server that aren't going to alter state. Posts are reserved for requests to the server that alter state.
One practical difference is that browsers and webservers have a limit on the number of characters that can exist in a URL. It's different from application to application, but it's certainly possible to hit it if you've got textareas in your forms.
Another gotcha with GETs - they get indexed by search engines and other automatic systems. Google once had a product that would pre-fetch links on the page you were viewing, so they'd be faster to load if you clicked those links. It caused major havoc on sites that had links like delete.php?id=1 - people lost their entire sites.
Use GET when you want the URL to reflect the state of the page. This is useful for viewing dynamically generated pages, such as those seen here. A POST should be used in a form to submit data, like when I click the "Post Your Answer" button. It also produces a cleaner URL since it doesn't generate a parameter string after the path.
Because GETs are purely URLs, they can be cached by the web browser and may be better used for things like consistently generated images. (Set an Expiry time)

GET may yeild marginally better performance, some webservers write POST contents to a temporary file before invoking the handler.
Another thing to consider is the size limit. GETs are capped by the size of the URL, 1024 bytes by the standard, though browsers may support more.
Transferring more data than that should use a POST to get better browser compatibility.
Even less than that limit is a problem, as another poster wrote, anything in the URL could end up in other parts of the brower's UI, like history.

There is nothing you can't do per-se. The point is that you're not supposed to modify the server state on an HTTP GET. HTTP proxies assume that since HTTP GET does not modify the state then whether a user invokes HTTP GET one time or 1000 times makes no difference. Using this information they assume it is safe to return a cached version of the first HTTP GET. If you break the HTTP specification you risk breaking HTTP client and proxies in the wild. Don't do it :)
This traverses into the concept of REST and how the web was kinda intended on being used. There is an excellent podcast on Software Engineering radio that gives an in depth talk about the use of Get and Post.
Get is used to pull data from the server, where an update action shouldn't be needed. The idea being is that you should be able to use the same GET request over and over and have the same information returned. The URL has the get information in the query string, because it was meant to be able to be easily sent to other systems and people like a address on where to find something.
Post is supposed to be used (at least by the REST architecture which the web is kinda based on) for pushing information to the server/telling the server to perform an action. Examples like: Update this data, Create this record.
i dont see a problem using get though, i use it for simple things where it makes sense to keep things on the query string.
Using it to update state - like a GET of delete.php?id=5 to delete a page - is very risky. People found that out when Google's web accelerator started prefetching URLs on pages - it hit all the 'delete' links and wiped out peoples' data. Same thing can happen with search engine spiders.
POST can move large data while GET cannot.
But generally it's not about a shortcomming of GET, rather a convention if you want your website/webapp to be behaving nicely.

I use POST when I don't want people to see the QueryString or when the QueryString gets large. Also, POST is needed for file uploads.
I don't see a problem using GET though, I use it for simple things where it makes sense to keep things on the QueryString.
Using GET will allow linking to a particular page possible too where POST would not work.
The original intent was that GET was used for getting data back and POST was to be anything. The rule of thumb that I use is that if I'm sending anything back to the server, I use POST. If I'm just calling an URL to get back data, I use GET.

However, before the final decision to use HTTP GET or POST, please also consider considerations for sensitive data and practical considerations.
A practial example would be whenever you submit an HTML form. You specify either post or get for the form action. PHP will populate $_GET and $_POST accordingly.
In PHP, POST data limit is usually set by your php.ini. GET is limited by server/browser settings I believe - usually around 255 bytes.

Well one major thing is anything you submit over GET is going to be exposed via the URL. Secondly as Ceejayoz says, there is a limit on characters for a URL.

As answered by others, there's a limit on url size with get, and files can be submitted with post only.
I'd like to add that one can add things to a database with a get and perform actions with a post. When a script receives a post or a get, it can do whatever the author wants it to do. I believe the lack of understanding comes from the wording the book chose or how you read it.
A script author should use posts to change the database and use get only for retrieval of information.
Scripting languages provided many means with which to access the request. For example, PHP allows the use of $_REQUEST to retrieve either a post or a get. One should avoid this in favor of the more specific $_GET or $_POST.
In web programming, there's a lot more room for interpretation. There's what one should and what one can do, but which one is better is often up for debate. Luckily, in this case, there is no ambiguity. You should use posts to change data, and you should use get to retrieve information.
HTTP Post data doesn't have a specified limit on the amount of data, where as different browsers have different limits for GET's. The RFC 2068 states:

Specifically you should the right HTTP constructs for what they're used for. HTTP GET's shouldn't have side-effects and can be safely refreshed and stored by HTTP Proxies, etc.
HTTP POST's are used when you want to submit data against a url resource.
A typical example for using HTTP GET is on a Search, i.e. Search?Query=my+query
A typical example for using a HTTP POST is submitting feedback to an online form.
Gorgapor, mod_rewrite still often utilizes GET. It just allows to translate a friendlier URL into a URL with a GET query string.
