I'm having some trouble using p:autoComplete properly, I am trying to let a user search based on a text field of an object. Currently I have the following:

My expectation with this code is that the autoComplete would let a user select a single Question instance, but once a value is selected from the autoComplete and an update event is triggered, I receive the following exception:
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Cannot convert Question#228bb9f7 of type class java.lang.String to class Question
It has been suggested that I use a converter, but I am confused why the value selected is being treated as a String rather than my Question object, since itemValue is defined to be a Question object.

Based on your code, what I can tell you is, you are missing a custom converter class.
You should use it like converter="#{questionConverter}".

Removing trailing spaces in <af:inputText> [duplicate]

In my JSF 2.2 application, when I create JSF form, the problem is that I can put spaces in the beginning of <h:inputText> when I insert it from my form and it will return these spaces with my value that I inserted in it. So I should handle each value with mystring.tirm() to void the spaces. Can I use any something else to return this value without spaces? There's no magic here. You have to write code to do the job. I gather that your concern is more that you don't want to repeat the same conversion job over every single input field.
In that case, just register a converter specifically on String.class via the forClass attribute of the #FacesConverter like below.

This way you don't need to declare the converter in every single input field. It will get applied transparently on every String model value which doesn't already have an explicit converter registered.
The JavaScript way is not recommended as it runs entirely at the client side and endusers can easily disable and manipulate JavaScript. The JSF converter runs at server side and its outcome is not manipulatable by the enduser.
I thing the real problem is in somewhere else. I faced with same thing in my forms (using postgresql and JSF 2.1)
When I created a field type "char(20)". In this case i got unnecessary spaces in h:inputText.
Then I changed the field type to "character varying(20)". In this case there were no spaces in h:inputText.

PrimeFaces selectOneMenu with custom editable inputField

Silly question, but that's my situation. I am having editable PrimeFaces selectOneMenu where inputField has following restriction:
lower and upper limit of number typed in
predefined text allowed
when decimal number is being typed allow only 2 decimal numbers
All is good except the last one with decimal number restriction. What it means is that I can't type there 1.111 but only 1.11. Change event keyUp for selectOneMenu is sadly added to the tag select but not to input.
Any ideas how to solve?
This calls for a custom validator. Create one which checks for the predefined values, if no match is found, check the number format. Basic example:

The validator can be used in your XHTML as:

As an alternative you could use jQuery to find the input field and bind a keypress listener to it. See for example: Jquery: filter input on keypress. However, I would keep the validator in place. Users could paste text for example.

JSF save Error when databased loaded selectOneMenu item [duplicate]

I have a problem with a p:selectOneMenu, no matter what I do I cannot get JSF to call the setter on the JPA entity. JSF validation fails with this message:

I have this working on several other class of the same type (ie, join table classes) but cannot for the life of me get this one working.
If anyone can throw some troubleshooting/debugging tips for this sort of problem it would be greatly appreciated.
Using log statements I have verified the following:
The Conveter is returning correct, non null values.
I have no Bean Validation in my JPA entities.
The setter setLocation(Location location) is never called.

Validation fails with the message "form:location: Validation Error: Value is not valid"
This error boils down to that the selected item does not match any of the available select item values specified by any nested <f:selectItem(s)> tag during processing of the form submit request.
As part of safeguard against tampered/hacked requests, JSF will reiterate over all available select item values and test if selectedItem.equals(availableItem) returns true for at least one available item value. If no one item value matches, then you'll get exactly this validation error.
This process is under the covers basically as below, whereby bean.getAvailableItems() fictionally represents the entire list of available select items as defined by <f:selectItem(s)>:

The selected item is missing in the list of available items.
The equals() method of the class representing the selected item is missing or broken.
If a custom Converter is involved, then it has returned the wrong object in getAsObject(). Perhaps it's even null.
To solve it:
Ensure that exactly the same list is been preserved during the subsequent request, particularly in case of multiple cascading menus. Making the bean #ViewScoped instead of #RequestScoped should fix it in most cases. Also make sure that you don't perform the business logic in the getter method of <f:selectItem(s)>, but instead in #PostConstruct or an action event (listener) method. If you're relying on specific request parameters, then you'd need to explicitly store them in the #ViewScoped bean, or to re-pass them on subsequent requests by e.g. <f:param>. Ensure that the equals() method is implemented right. This is already done right on standard Java types such as java.lang.String, java.lang.Number, etc, but not necessarily on custom objects/beans/entites. See also Right way to implement equals contract. In case you're already using String, make sure that the request character encoding is configured right. If it contains special characters and JSF is configured to render the output as UTF-8 but interpret the input as e.g. ISO-8859-1, then it will fail. See also a.o. Unicode input retrieved via PrimeFaces input components become corrupted.
Debug/log the actions of your custom Converter and fix it accordingly. For guidelines, see also Conversion Error setting value for 'null Converter' In case you're using java.util.Date as available items with <f:convertDateTime>, make sure that you don't forget the full time part in the pattern. In my case I forgot to implement a correct get/set methods. It happened because I have changed a lot of attributes along the development.
Without a proper get method, JSF can´t recover your selected item, and happens what BalusC said at item 1 of his answer:
1 . The selected item is missing in the list of available items. This can happen if the list of available items is served by a request scoped bean which is not properly reinitialized on subsequent request, or is incorrectly doing the business job inside a getter method which causes it to return a different list in some way.
This can be a Converter Issue or else DTO issue.
Try to solve this, by adding hashCode() and equals() methods in your object DTO; In the above scenario you can generate these methods within the Location object class which indicate as the 'DTO' here.
Example:

How do UISelectOne and UISelectMany components preselect defaults in f:selectItems

I know how to preselect <p:selectOneMenu>, in selected value should be one of the objects from <f:selectItems>, but how does this component work under the hood and can I change this behavior?
In my case I've a duplicate object, actually this is two objects with the same values but created twice and selected object in <p:selectOneMenu> differs from object from <f:selectItems> and it doens't recognize it.
Most likely I will change my design so, it will point to same object but in case I can't do it due to legacy code or etc, how can I change the behavior of <p:selectOneMenu> that it will compare objects by id for example?
I'd thought that converter responsible for it, but when it rendered it doesn't enter on getAsObject method only getAsString, so I guess that there's something different, but what?

It uses Object#equals() for that. You can change (fix) this behavior by implementing it accordingly on your entity.

Don't forget the hashCode() to satisfy the equals-hashCode contract.

If you can't change the existing entity for some unclear reason, wrap it in your own DTO.
The converter only converts between the entity and its unique String representation for usage in HTML output and HTTP request parameters and has therefore no influence on preselection. It has only influence on potential Validation Error: Value is not valid trouble.
