Set children animate values in SVG "use" element - svg

I've got an animated spinner SVG file. It's 12 bars in a circle that alter opacity.

This works fine, but it's really repetitive, so I factored out one rect in a defs tag, and used use to place it.

This also works fine except I need to set the begin property in the nested animate tag. I've no idea how to reach that. The MDN for SVG's use doesn't seem to talk about altering children of elements made with use and searching Google and SO doesn't turn up anything useful, since use is such a common word.
I tried <use xlink:href="#bar" transform="rotate(0 50 50)"><animate begin="-0.9167s"></animate></use> and a few other things that didn't work.
How do I set an attribute value of a child of an element made with use ?

To be clear, I don't want to do the animation in CSS or Javascript, I want everything contained in the SVG file. If it's not possible, that's good to know, too.

animateTransform a group/object on hover (and return to initial state afterwards)

Is it possible to perform an animateTransform on a hover inside SVG?
I want the element to transform while the mouse is over it, and then return to its original position when the mouse has left.
I figure this is probably isn't possible. I have a mouseover to start the element, a mouseout to stop it, and set fill to remove to set its state back to the start.
But if the transform moves the object out from user the mouse cursor, the animation resets and starts moving again then moves out and resets and starts moving again ... flickering.

Note: The svg is not being used on a HTML page - most solutions I have seen use "css" and "javascript", neither of which are available. I need to use SVG/SMIL only. If I were targetting html, I'd use css :hover.
You can use fill freeze on combination with restart whenNotActive. And then have an animation for both mouseover and mouseout.
I also removed the from attribute. The animation needs to start from the "freezed" point.

One variant is to link the animation to an invisible, unmoving element on top of the moving one. For that, the begin and end event values are prefixed with the id of that cover element. Like this:

Please guide me how to update the color. The color eventually will be changed multiple times with long paths.
I'm not sure if there's anything in SVG that would enable you to do that directly.
But you can check currentTime vs the duration of the animateMotion element and set a color via javascript based on that.

You need to tweak it for your paths, basic concept is to add an animate on the element you want to change and use values and keyTimes (the whole animation is 0 to 1)
As you will notice, you get a color-gradient for free.
If you don't want that, add more keyTimes so the color fades occur faster

SVG Animation of <use> of <path> does not work in FireFox

I am making an animated snow-flakes pattern in SVG and it works nicely in Chrome/ium but in Firefox the pattern will only make the occasional tiny movement when you move the mouse in and out of the patterned area but otherwise doesn't move.
The underlying problem seems to be the same firefox bug as in this question where animating a <use> element doesn't work. My additional problem is that I am animating the position of a <path> element by changing its x and y position separately to avoid an obvious looping movement and since <path> elements don't have those attributes I need to reference them in a <use> element.
I'm hoping that I'm missing some completely obvious solution where the <path> gets embedded in some other element which has x and y attributes which I can animate and avoid the use of <use>.

Based on comments by #PaulLeBeau and #RobertLongson I have made a version where there are two <animateTransform> tags attached to a <g> where the second one has addititve="sum". This <g> also contains the <path> to animate.
The two animations can have different durations to make for a long cycle and both can affect both x and y to make the illusion even more complete.

SVG: draw text with solid background color [duplicate]

I want to color the background of svg text similar to background-color in css
I was only able to find documentation on fill, which colors the text itself
Is it even possible?

No this is not possible, SVG elements do not have background-... presentation attributes.
To simulate this effect you could draw a rectangle behind the text attribute with fill="green" or something similar (filters). Using JavaScript you could do the following:

A duplicate text item is being placed, with stroke and stroke-width attributes. The stroke should match the background colour, and the stroke-width should be just big enough to create a "splodge" on which to write the actual text.
A bit of a hack and there are potential issues, but works for me!
Instead of using a <text> tag, the <foreignObject> tag can be used, which allows for XHTML content with CSS.
No, you can not add background color to SVG elements. You can do it programmatically with d3.

In the example above, filter's x and y positions can be used as transform: translate(-10%, -10%) would, and width and height values can be read as 120% and 120%. So we made background 20% bigger, and offsetted it -10%, so background is now 10% bigger on each side of the text.
The previous answers relied on doubling up text and lacked sufficient whitespace.
By using atop and I was able to get the results I wanted.

An obvious workaround to the problem of the blur produced by the filter effect is to render the <text> two times: once for the background (with transparent characters) and once for the characters (without a background filter).
For me, this was the only way to make the text readable in Safari.

The aria-hidden="true" attribute is there to prevent screen readers from speaking the text twice, if the user uses a screen reader.
You can add style to your text:

How do I make a bar-chart in SVG have animated bars growing upwards?

I am making a bar-chart as an SVG and would very much like my bars to be animated and grow upwards from "0" on the y-axis to their corresponding value.
What's making me struggle is that the coord (0,0) is at the top left and not at the bottom left. In my "non-animated" solution I was giving the bars different values of "y" depending on how high they were supposed to be, like this:

This looks like a bar-chart because (y + height) is the same for all rectangles, but it's conceptually drawn "top to down" starting at different points of the y-axis and growing down to the same value of y.
Now when I want to animate this, I obviously want them to grow "upwards" and this is where I am stuck.

This will make the rectangle grow "down" from y=8 to y=22 and in a grid where (0,0) is on the top left that makes perfect sense. However, I really wanted to do the opposite and since it seems negative values for the "height" attribute is treated as 0 (or I could have animated the height from -14 to 0) I am unsure about how I would do that.
I've tried googling around but have not had much luck. I'd also like very much to do this without using a charting-library.
If you wrap everything with a scale(1, -1) transformation all the y values are multiplied by -1, which has the effect of flipping the y-axis. You then need to translate everything down so they have a positive value and you can see them:

Note that you need to set all the y values to be equal and you may want to flip the gradient.

By drawing a solid bar and then adding a white non-transparent rectangle on top of it and having that rectangle get an animation it appears as if the bars are growing upwards.
I've ended up with this solution because I also need to add various labels and text overlays (but I left that part out of the question since I didn't think it was relevant). Flipping the svg with scale(1 -1) makes the text appear upside-down, and flipping just the part of the svg that has the bars in it means having to work with two different sets of coordinates which was making my code (this is a generated chart and not static XML) a bit messy.
I played around with your code and changed some things.
