I'm trying to run a legacy React app locally for the first time. I'm on a new Mac M1 with Big Sur 11.5.2. My node version is 16.9.0, and I made python3 the default (although the app seems to be looking for python2). I also upgraded CommandLineTools to the latest version.
But when I do a simple npm install, I get lots of warnings, and finally this error:

I'm not proficient enough with node to understand exactly how to troubleshoot this, beyond the steps I've already taken. Clearly something is wrong with node-sass, so I installed it separately with:
sudo npm install --unsafe-perm -g node-sass
That works, but when I re-run npm install to get all the dependencies, I get the same error.
Upgrade node-sass to a version higher than 6.0.1 (mine was 4.0.0) solves this issue

I tied this commands npm install -g node-sass, npm uninstall -g node-sass
The same I tried to install latest version of node-sass
I found a solution to this problem. Simply to downgrade node version and it works
You might want to run npm upgrade to have npm check for outdated version of your dependencies.
Because for node 16 you need node-sass in version 6.0+
Just remove node-sass from your package.json ... that solved the problem for me

I thought there might be a problem with node-gyp so I did a npm install node-gyp -g separately but the issue did not go away. Does anyone know how to resolve this?
By the way, I am on Mac,running OSX 10.11.5, also recently installed XCode 6.3.2 for a separate project and can only use this version of XCode, not sure if that is causing the problem.
node-gyp also requires python and xcode on MacOs for C++ compilation. There are similar requirements for other systems.

I had the same problem and what worked for Emmanuel didn't work for me. In the end, this solved my problem:
cd /usr/local/lib
sudo ln -s ../../lib/libSystem.B.dylib libgcc_s.10.5.dylib

node-opencv does not fully support OpenCV 3.x yet. They mention it on the readme here. You should be able to install 2.4 on your RPi2 with this tutorial, or search that same site if you have an RPi3.

I have node-gyp installed am running OS X with xcode + commandlines installed.
I am not sure where the problem is occurring? Could be dependencies.
I had the same issue with a different node package devtools-terminal.
The problem is that a header file is configured incorrectly for OSX as explained here.
This is the work around I use:
mkdir /tmp/pty.js
git clone https://github.com/chjj/pty.js.git /tmp/pty.js
vi /tmp/pty.js/src/unix/pty.cc
replace line 39: #include <util.h> with #include "/usr/include/util.h"
npm install -g /tmp/pty.js
and now npm install -g devtools-terminal should work.
This way you fix the issue in pty.js and use your local copy as the dependency for the package you with to install.
