I am trying to get values from other column, based on some logic, crossed logic, but I didn't get any result with the only thing I know: IF or VLOOKUP.
The table is in this way:
So basically there are groups divided by blank row, and in column D I want to add the value from column B, but according with other letter that the one from the row ( C is from Credit, D is from Debtor). So in first D5 I have C on the same row in A5, so I need to take value from D, which is 2, according to B6.
So sorry if this question is too easy or stupid, but I don't know much about excel formulas, other that the basic one.
I'd say the fastest way with formula takes two columns. The first one (let's say column C) will use this formula to define the blocks:
=IF(A5="",C4+1,IFERROR(C4+0,0))
It's meant for cell C5.
The second column will give back the actual result:
=SUMIFS(B:B,A:A,IF(A5="C","D",IF(A5="D","C","")),C:C,C5)
It's meant for cell D5.
Place them accordingly and drag them down to cover your list.
Then again: if you are looking just for the number and not for its sum (and therefore assuming all numbers are equal for each letter in each block), just use this one in cell D5 instead of the previous one:
=SUMIFS(B:B,A:A,IF(A5="C","D",IF(A5="D","C","")),C:C,C5)/COUNTIFS(A:A,IF(A5="C","D",IF(A5="D","C","")),C:C,C5)
Now if you were to use only IF and VLOOKUP functions, a possible solution could be this one:
A
B
C
D
E
F
G

0

F1:N1 with random numbers (can have duplicates).
F2:N2 with sorted numbers.
Need a formula to fill in A1:C1 with values from F2:N2 where F1:N1 has a maximum value.
In the example it should be 1,8,3 from F2:N2 - according to 9,9,8 from F1:N1.
_ A B C D E F G H I J K L M N
1 ? ? ? 9 3 8 1 5 5 3 9 8
2 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
You can do this with a "helper row" to create a list of unique ranks:
F3: =RANK(F1,$F$1:$N$1)+COUNTIF($F$1:F1,F1)-1
and fill right to N3
Since your values in F2:N2 are sequential {1...8}, you can use this formula:
A1: =MATCH(SMALL($F$3:$N$3,COLUMNS($A:A)),$F$3:$N$3,0)
and fill right to C1
If the values in F2:N2 are random, then you can use this:
A1: =INDEX($F$2:$N$2,1,MATCH(SMALL($F$3:$N$3,COLUMNS($A:A)),$F$3:$N$3,0))
and fill right to C1
Nobody has jumped in to offer a Google Sheets solution so here is one:
=query(transpose(sortn(transpose(F1:N2),3,,1,false,2,true)),"select Col1,Col2,Col3 limit 1 offset 1")
In A1. This is a self-expanding formula so does not need to be filled across and does not need helper rows.
EDIT
'Limit 1' may be omitted in the above formula as mentioned in the comment.
Also this is a little shorter:
=transpose(query(sortn(transpose(F1:N2),3,,1,false,2,true),"Select Col2"))
Formula in A1 = INDEX($F$2:$N$2,MATCH(COLUMN(A1),$F$3:$N$3,0)) and is dragged till C1
Formula in F3 = RANK(F1,$F$1:$N$1)+COUNTIF($F$1:F1,F1)-1 and is dragged till N3
I can't seem to find anything similar that's already been asked (they all relate to incrementing row numbers rather than columns)
I'm looking to drag a formula across horizontally and have the columns increment by 2
E.g. B1-A1, D1-C1, F1-E1...
Thanks!
You'll need to have a value in cell A1 and B1 for the following to work.
For my testing I put the number 1 in A1 and B1.
Try this in Cell C1:
=IF(MOD(COUNT($A$1:B1),2)=0,COLUMN(B1),IF(B1<>A1,B1,A1))
Here's what you should see when you drag that formula across:
A B C D E F G H I J K L M N
1 1 2 2 4 4 6 6 8 8 10 10 12 12
And this is what the formula does:
The MOD(COUNT() part of the formula counts the cells to the left of it, and if they are a multiple of 2, the value changes.
I've left the value to change to (the 'new' value) as the COLUMN() number for the cell before, just for example's sake. but you can change this part.
The last IF statement at the end checks if the cell before is equal to the cell before that, (eg. Is CELL C1 equal to CELL B1) and if they are not equal, it will give the cell before as a value (the 'copy' value).
Every day I have to analyze two cols of numbers.
Cols differ each day.
Col 1 has no.'s from 1 to 5, eg. Day 1 there are 150 x 1's and 200 x 2's, etc. Day 2, 350 x 1's and 85 x 2's etc.
Col 2 has values between 1 and 99.
I need to count how many 1's there are to obtain a 1's average, 2's ave., etc. So far I have tried to write a vb program (excel 2010) - I have written the following:
Function Phil2()
ct = 0
For X = 2 To 10
If ax = 1 Then Let b15 = b15 + bx
ct = ct + 1
Next
End Function.
But I cannot get it to display. Can anyone help me?
I want the average of the 1's in cell b15.
See the formula bar for what is in cell E1. If you don't have XL2007 or above, the formula becomes:
=IF(ISERROR(SUMIF($A$1:$B$10,D1,$B$1:$B$10)/COUNTIF($A$1:$B$10,D1)),"",SUMIF($A$1:$B$10,D1,$B$1:$B$10)/COUNTIF($A$1:$B$10,D1))
You could also make more "automated" by using Dynamic Named Ranges for your ID (1,2,3..) and data (%) sets, that change each day.
OK, It works fine - I modified your formula to:
=IFERROR(AVERAGEIFS(B$16:B$500,$A$16:$A$500,$A2,B$16:B$500,">0"),"")
and it works perfectly for values 1, and 2. So that's a great start. I placed the formula cells on top: so in a1 I typed cow no., in b1 %Milk, in c1 %weight, etc.. In a2 I typed 1, a3 2, a4 3 etc.. In b2 your formula etc.. My next challenge is to lump together all cow types 3 to 11. So next to cow type 1 we have a % for each category, same for cow type 2, etc.. But the 3rd row must have an average for all categories 3+. Raw data cow types are in a10 down, vals in b10, c10, etc.
I have a spreadsheet with 2 columns of data, column A and B, and column C where I'm looking for the formula.
row A B C
1 50
2
3
4
5 56 6
6
7
8 46 10
9
10
11 64 18
As you can see, a row either contains a value or not. In column C, I'm looking to calculate the difference between
a) the value in column B and the value in column A's first non-empty cell directly above (so for example, at row 5, I calculate the difference between B5 and A1 56 - 50 = 6) if the value of B is a number and
b) the value in column A and the value in column B's first non-empty cell directly above (row 8, 56 - 46 = 10)
and put nothing if neither column A and B are empty.
I've been struggling with "first non-empty cell" to write an R1C1 formula. Note that I know I can do this in VBA but I'm looking for the R1C1 formula.
Thanks for your help.
Here is an array formula (that you need to validate with Ctrl + Shift + Enter) you can put in C1 and drag and drop till the end of your data:
=IF(OR(A1<>"",B1<>""),INDEX($B$1:B1,MAX(IF($B$1:B1="",0,ROW($B$1:B1))))-INDEX($A$1:A1,MAX(IF($A$1:A1="",0,ROW($A$1:A1)))),"")
Or, in a french version of Excel:
=SI(OU(A1<>"";B1<>"");INDEX($B$1:B1;MAX(SI($B$1:B1="";0;LIGNE($B$1:B1))))-INDEX($A$1:A1;MAX(SI($A$1:A1="";0;LIGNE($A$1:A1))));"")
Note that if you feel interested, you can commit into Stackoverflow in french
Perhaps try this formula in C2 copied down
=IF(B2="",IF(A2="","",LOOKUP(9.99E+307,B$1:B1)-A2),B2-LOOKUP(9.99E+307,A$1:A1))
