Creating routes dynamically at runtime with Warp? - rust

I have a Rust app and I'd like to store routes in a database (it can be an in-memory mock for all I care), but I want to update routes at runtime. I'm ignoring a 404 route or other status routes and assuming anything off the root route of "/" would be fair game for the user to create. That means the user could create "/hello/world/test" and "/hello2/again/test" with no real pattern. Most examples I see asume there will be a pattern.
The idea is that the user would be able to eventually define a route and Rust module and function in the database and then when that route is hit, it would load the function. All the examples I found assume that the routes are known at compile time or follow a pattern.
If hyper is not the framework I should be using let me know.

Node itself is just the language, what you're asking about happens in a framework, like Express.
In Express (and most other frameworks) you can define routes based on either strings, symbols, or a regex. In your above example, the route definition is likely looking for topic/:id and also set to accept anything put after the ID.

What is the difference (if any) between a route and an endpoint in the context of a RESTful API?

I have a probably rather simple question, but I'm unable to find an answer with nice explanations:
What is the difference (if any) between a route and an endpoint in the context of a RESTful API developed within a Node.js / Express application (but these concepts may be broader?!)?
(Does it relate to URLs in some way?)

We imported express which we installed at the beginning of the course, app.get makes a get request to the server with the route/endpoint provided as the first parameter, the endpoint is meant to return all the todos in the database.
These concepts are used interchangeably, which makes me confused.
(please note that I'm a 100% beginner with REST API, nodejs and express but I try to do my best to learn).

3 different concepts here:
Resource: {id: 42, type: employee, company: 5}
Route: localhost:8080/employees/42
Endpoint: GET localhost:8080/employees/42
You can have different endpoints for the same route, such as DELETE localhost:8080/employees/42. So endpoints are basically actions.
Also you can access the same resource by different routes such as localhost:8080/companies/5/employees/42. So a route is a way to locate a resource.

A Route is the URI, and the Endpoint is the action performed on the URI.
Routes and endpoints are associated concepts - you can't really have one without the other.
What is an endpoint?
Generally speaking, an "endpoint" is one end of a communication channel where one system interacts with another system. This term is also used similarly in networking.
For a typical web API, endpoints are URLs, and they are described in the API's documentation so programmers know how to use/consume them. For example, a particular web API may have this endpoint:
GET https://my-api.com/Library/Books
This would return a list of all books in the library.
What is a route?
A "route" is typically code that matches incoming request paths to resources. In other words, it defines the URL and what code will be executed. A route path might contain regular expressions, patterns, parameters, and involve validation. For example, consider this route path:
"{controller}/{action}/{id?}"
In ASP.NET, pattern matching is applied, so GET https://my-api.com/Library/Books/341 would call the Books public method on the Library class, passing a parameter of 341. Routing frameworks can be very flexible and versatile.
The simplest example of an endpoint is to put a file you want to be consumed (say data.json) inside the public_html folder of your web server. It can be reached by GET https://my-api.com/data.json. The routing is handled by the web server out of the box and no routing code is required.

When to use "client-side routing" or "server-side routing"?
Endpoints are basically use to perform specific task and return data and endpoints are kind of part of a route.
For example is route and this is also a route but here both of them are returning different data not he same so, we can say that the last two parameter here is kind of end point means the id and question string.

Limit users to their own resources (URL mangling)

I'm building a SPA with vue and node.js / express.js . At this moment I dont have any way to limit different users to access resources from other users by just modifying the id part in one of my urls. Example:
'/api/v1/house/:id/pets'
I have other end points that follow these rules too. I know I could create a middle-ware for every resource type and add it to express routes. Something like:
app.get('/api/v1/house/:id/pets', userOwnsHouseMiddleware, appsConfig.getPetsInHouse);
Is this a good way to accomplish this? Could I build a more generic (not resource dependant) middleware?

Express Router Handling

I'm currently using express to handle client request. At one point I need to handle get request if user loads any page of my app. So, I want all the routes to be configured at some place.
For example:
"/about"
"/contact"
"/listing"
"/product"
Above there are multiple routes and for each route I need to write app.get('/about', handler)..like this. So rather then writing multiple get handlers I want to use these path dynamically.
Is there a best way which I can use to store all the route path at one place (not DB) and can read from there only. Currently I am thinking to use JSON where I will store all the path with method type, params etc.
Also please validate is this a correct approach to handle such things or any better way or any node module.
It's common practice to write different methods for each route.
This makes sense since you'll want to return something different for /about than for /contact.
To organise this in a scalable manner you should create different files for each route. You can look at this official Express.js example.

Bigger projects Node.js and RESTful API

I'm looking into node.js which really seem like a pretty nice environment. I've worked with a lot of different Technologies and for server, mainly php and Java (jsp), but dabbled in som RoR and Python.
I find node.js really easy to get up and running and it feels quite natural to work with, and I found some good entry level tutorials.
I just am missing some more intermediate resources. For example when creating bigger frameworks or api's how would you structure or architect it. I set up some smaller api's to try it out where it would go something like this:
I've made use of the Express framework to create a http server, listen to a port, set up an express object and bound some requests.
However these have been quite small, and the purpose has been learning, if I think about scaling up the size of the API for production, perhaps wanting to do other stuff like serve web-pages as well. I find it hard to see how the architecture would look.
It's vague as I am still new to node.js but I'm mainly thinking about things like if you typically keep all api in one file or if there are good ways to split it up into modules? And if anyone know any resource talking a bit more about how to design the architecture when working in node.js

In my opinion, Express is the good way to go if you want to build complex or big APIs.
It is among others easily testable (for instance with Mocha or Jasmine) and customizable, especially thanks to its middlewares.
For the directory structure, what I usually use is (at least) the following:
app.js : the main entrypoint. Will create the express application, indicate which controller to use for every route prefix, and assign the middlewares. Example from a previous project
controllers : will contain the controllers, the functions which will handle the requests, in the same style as in standard MVC frameworks (e.g. UserController, ...). Each controller would create an express Router object and export it. Inside the controllers, individual handlers are in charge of individual API requests, such as /api/users/list. It would use some library to access your data (e.g. Mongoose for MongoDB), and would then send the response to the client. Example (UserController.js)
models : will contain the models with all their attributes and methods. In my case, it would be the Mongoose models. Example (Song.js)
middlewares : will contain the various middlewares of the project. A practical example would be a middleware checking for an access token in the incoming request, and returning a 403 HTTP error if not. Example (AuthMiddleware.js)
helpers : various helpers
tests : unit tests of you API
This could be the minimal directory organization. On top of that, you may want to use a templating engine such as EJS to serve webpage. Take a look at « Use EJS to template your node application ».
This is only to give you an overview of what an express directory structure could look like, but there are of course plenty (better?) other possibilities. Hope that gives you a quick and useful insight :)
