Typescript imports destroys lookup? - node.js

I am trying to use a nodejs library like uuid in my typescript app. This simple import works just fine if I want to only use it in a specific class:
import { v4 } from "uuid";
class MyClass {
...
}
However, this makes the class MyClass not "discoverable" by any other files in my solution. Sure I could export it, but that forces me to import the class in every usage, and the problem spreads like a cancer to every file. Do I really have to import/export every single class/file in my application just because I want to produce a simple UUID?
I saw that I can use require instead, however typescript doesn't know what that keyword is. I found this question but neither installing #types/node nor the quick and dirty declare var require any works.
It really seems like I am jumping through a lot of unnecessary hoops just to generate a uuid in typescript. Am I doing something very wrong?

How to allow CommonJS programs to import from my TypeScript library without using require().default and having autocomplete in text editors

I'm currently developing a TypeScript library to be used internally in my company's projects, which are a mix of JavaScript and TypeScript Node applications.
So, I want to be able to import the library's default class properly in JavaScript with CommonJS. However, I can only use my class in these programs if I import it with require('...').default.
I managed to make it work previously by adding a module.exports = MyClass at the end of the file, but the autocomplete of VSCode doesn't seem to catch up to that, still suggesting the default before showing the methods.
How can I make it so I can import my class by just using require('...') while still making sure the autocomplete is properly working?

For clarity, what I want to do is to be able to do this:
const MyClass = require('MyTypeScriptClass');
instead of:
const MyClass = require('MyTypeScriptClass').default;

I decided to not use export default when exporting from a library, since it seems to be what every other library does.
The TypeScript equivalent should be this:
class MyClass {
}
export = MyClass
Can also be inlined to export = class MyClass { ... if that is preferred.
(To import an export like this in a TypeScript project you need to set the esModuleInterop flag.)

What is the best way to organize the code of a nodejs-express project, using TypeScript?

While trying to organize the code of my first NodeJS-express project, I ran into some doubts about the use of namespaces, modules and classes. When to choose one? When another?
For example, my project is structured (simplifying) in.
routers -> controllers -> services -> repositories.
The possibilities I thought of to manage these "entities" are the following:
Classes
Classes with static methods
Singletons
Simple module export
Namespaces
Classes
I thought of avoiding them right away, since the above-mentioned entities do not need to memorize any state. Furthermore, they would complicate the code due to the need to be instantiated.
Classes with static methods
They are correct? Or rather a simple namespace or simple export of the modules?
Class + Singletons
A way of organizing the code in a "nicer" way than the simple class, but which does not convince me, since reading on the net that the singleton in TypeScript is replaceable with the namespace.
Simple module export
The way I thought to implement immediately, for example in this way (file user.repository.ts):

It's corrects? Or am I not properly using what TypeScript offers? Being the first time I use this language, I would like to be sure I chose the right path.

P.S. I know that, once the TypeScript is compiled, in Javascript the classes are practically syntactic sugar. What I'm interested in knowing are the best practices for writing good code in TypeScript.

Can't import exported functions

I am having strange issues with Typescript when I import things from a file which exports them. Sometimes I will export a function, then import it to another file, then I use the function and it is not a function anymore. When I define the function in the same file, all of a sudden the function is a function?!?!?
Why would a function stop being a function when it is exported? I have had similar problems with classes too.
The hard part of this issue is I can't recreate a simple example because it only happens when I am using some kind of higher level package.

Below is some codes showing off the basic issue I'm having with one of the decorators from InversifyJS.
container.ts

The strangest thing is when I put the provideSingleton in the same file as the TestService, everything works!?!?!
Basically to recreate the issue, simply follow the example from here: inversify-binding-decorators - Using #provideFluent multiple times. However there is an issue with the example, so please see this issue: fluentProvide example needed. The above provideSingleton reflects the changes from that issue. Then you simply import the provideSingleton function from another file instead of defining it in the same like in the example.
Can anyone explain to me what I'm missing? Why oh why would certain exported items not bee seen as the type they are? Is there a step I'm not seeing that NodeJS takes to make the item actually exported and therefore different? Can I force the function to resolve as a function so it can be used as such?

So it looks like you can get issues like this when NodeJS can't handle a recursive import. I'm not exactly sure how to check you are getting this error other than your symptoms are like what I stated above. Basically the recursion caused my function to not load and therefore undefined is not a function.
It would be easy to notice if you had code like so:
a.ts
import B from './b';
export default class A extends B {}
b.ts
import A from './a';
export default class B extends A {}
In my case, I think my function provideSingleton did not like the file I put it in because of some conflicting code in the file, which all I had was:

In the end, if this issue comes up, try another file for your function and pay good attention to how the order of the loading happens. Although NodeJS handles recursive imports most of the time, you can still trip it out.

How to use multiple compiled ts files in a node module?

Currently I am trying to use TypeScript to create JavaScript-Files which are then required in a index.js file. I am using VS 2015 Update 3 with node.js tools 1.2 RC. Sadly it is not working like I thought it would.
To begin with here is my initial idea:
I have a node module (to be precise, it is a deployd module http://docs.deployd.com/docs/using-modules/). This module is handling payment providers like paypal or stripe. Now I want to use TypeScript to write interfaces, classes and use types to make it easier to add new payment providers. The old .js files should still be there and used. I want to migrate step by step and use the self-written and compiled .js files together. So I thought I can create .ts files, write my code, save, let VS compile to js and require the compiled js file in another js file. Okay, that is my idea... Now the problem
I have a PaymentProvider.ts file which looks like this

VS 2015 doesn't show any errors. The js and .js.map files are generated. Now I thought I could require the files and that's it. I tried to use the PaypalPaymentProvider.js like this const PaypalPaymentProvider = require("./lib/payment-provider/PaypalPaymentProvider.js"); (yes, it is located there) but it's not working. When starting the index.js via node I get the following error:
...\Path\PaymentProvider.ts:1 (function (exports, require, module, __filename, __dirname) { import IPaymentProvider = require("./IPaymentProvider.ts"); Unexpected token import....
I find it strange that this is the error, because JavaScript doesnt't have Interfaces. The compiled IPaymentProvider.js is empty.
Also I thought that TypeScript is mainly for development and the compiled JavaScript for production. So why it is requiring a ts-file? I thought imports in typescript will be converted to require of the compiled js-file?
Do I need to require all compiled js files and not only the one I currently try to use? (I don't think so...)
To be honest, I think the main problem is that I am new to TypeScript and make something wrong from the very beginning.

I have the solution... Thanks to Paelo's links I was able to see that I need to omit the file ending! So the really simple solution was to write
import IPaymentProvider = require("./IPaymentProvider");
instead of
import IPaymentProvider = require("./IPaymentProvider.ts");
When I changed that in every ts file it worked perfectly!

How to import node module in TypeScript without type definitions?

When I try to import node.js module in TypeScript like this:
import co = require('co');
import co from 'co';
without providing type definitions, both lines reports same error:
error TS2307: Cannot find module 'co'.
How to import it correctly?
The trick is to use purely JavaScript notation:
const co = require('co');
Your options are to either import it outside TypeScript's module system (by calling a module API like RequireJS or Node directly by hand) so that it doesn't try to validate it, or to add a type definition so that you can use the module system and have it validate correctly. You can stub the type definition though, so this can be very low effort.
Using Node (CommonJS) imports directly:
// Note there's no 'import' statement here.
var loadedModule: any = require('module-name');
// Now use your module however you'd like.
Using RequireJS directly:
define(["module-name"], function (loadedModule: any) {
// Use loadedModule however you'd like
});
Be aware that in either of these cases this may mix weirdly with using real normal TypeScript module imports in the same file (you can end up with two layers of module definition, especially on the RequireJS side, as TypeScript tries to manage modules you're also managing by hand). I'd recommend either using just this approach, or using real type definitions.
Stubbing type definitions:
Getting proper type definitions would be best, and if those are available or you have time to write them yourself you should definitely should.
If not though, you can just give your whole module the any type, and put your module into the module system without having to actually type it:
declare module 'module-name' {
export = <any> {};
}
This should allow you to import module-name and have TypeScript know what you're talking about. You'll still need to ensure that importing module-name does actually load it successfully at runtime with whatever module system you're using, or it will compile but then fail to actually run.
I got an error when I used the "Stubbing type definitions" approach in Tim Perry's answer: error TS2497: Module ''module-name'' resolves to a non-module entity and cannot be imported using this construct.
The solution was to rework the stub .d.ts file slightly:
declare module 'module-name' {
const x: any;
export = x;
}
And then you can import via:
import * as moduleName from 'module-name';
Creating your own stub file lowers the barrier to writing out real declarations as you need them.
Just import the module the following way:
import 'co';
