I have a requirement where i already have DNS url say www.mycustomdns.com, now i have to create subdomain named www.qa.mycustomdns.com
which will point to azure function app, which is PaaS service of azure cloud, to the url https://businessqa.azurewebsites.net .
My requirement
client ->(https://qa.mycustomdns.com)-->redirect to ->
https://businessqa.azurewebsites.net--> Azure function
without adding any proxy or intermediate services.
So when i refered the Azure docs
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/app-service/app-service-web-tutorial-custom-domain
As per the doc, we have to create CNAME entry along with TXT entry for uid.
Will this able to fulfill my requirement or do i need to add any other interim activities or process to be brought in to support my requirement?
As i am very new to azure function and DNS mapping. Please provide suggestion on this.
Clarification
First of all, I must say that respecting contoso.com domain is used by Microsoft Azure for examples, instead of example.com.
Answer
As my domain is mycustomdns.com I will have to go to the Azure DNS zone editor where you should add the two(2) records provided by MS(Microsoft.):
CNAME record pointing desired location (In this case, wwww)
TXT record in order to verify the ownership of the domain and app with MS.
Adding first record
TYPE NAME TTL VALUE
IN CNAME www 3600 businessqa.azurewebsites.net
Adding second record
TYPE NAME TTL VALUE
IN TXT asuid.www 3600 <YOUR_VERIFICATION-TEXT>
Steps
Will this able to fulfill my requirement or do i need to add any other interim activities or process to be brought in to support my requirement?
Yes, at the server level to allow incoming connections in the desired socket (if applicable), otherwise MS will do it via an automated process.

I have static website on azure storage, it's connected to azure cdn to have https, and i have my custom domain folla.com.pl I want this domain to point to https://companywebsitecdn.azureedge.net/ which is address of my website on azure cdn. I chose custom domain on cdn configuration site, it asks me to make dns mapping to verify ownership, so i make CNAME cdnverify.folla.com.pl to cdnveriy.companywebsitecdn.azureedge.net and it get me to other window with custom doamin https config. And here's my problem, it get's stuck on second step
How I'm suppouse to configure another mapping to make it work, what i mean is to make folla.com.pl to point to https://companywebsitecdn.azureedge.net/ with https. I can't proivde what i already tried with my dns because it was a lot and i don't remember all of it. Also it's already second try and everytime after failure I have wait 8 hours for another try. Thanks in advance
This is my DNS config
When you try to add your custom domain folla.com.pl in the custom domains settings of Azure CDN endpoint. Before this step, you should have a CNAME record in the following format in the DNS zone.
When you turn on the custom domain https, you don't need to make a CNAME cdnverify.folla.com.pl to cdnveriy.companywebsitecdn.azureedge.net. Read here.
If that CNAME record still exists and does not contain the cdnverify
subdomain, the DigiCert CA uses it to automatically validate ownership
of your custom domain.
If the CNAME record entry contains the cdnverify subdomain, follow the rest of the instructions in this step.
DigiCert sends a verification email to the following email addresses. Verify that you can approve directly from one of the following addresses and read here.
admin#<your-domain-name.com>
administrator#<your-domain-name.com>
webmaster#<your-domain-name.com>
hostmaster#<your-domain-name.com>
postmaster#<your-domain-name.com>
Automatic validation typically takes a few hours. If you don’t see your domain validated in 24 hours, open a support ticket.
Error creating Custom Domain in Azure
Hi, I am trying to link a custom domain to my static website that is located on my blob storage account. When creating the custom domain these are the azure instructions "Create a CNAME record with the DNS provider that points the domain (eg, www.contoso.com) to blobstorage.blob.core.windows.net or blobstorage.z13 .web.core.windows.net and then specify your domain. This method is simpler, but causes a short downtime while Azure checks the domain registration. "
In my godaddy account I have created a new CNAME record as follows Type: CNAME, name: www.mydomain.com, value: blobstorage.z13.web.core.windows.net.Y when trying to specify the custom domain in azure (mydomain.com) generates the following error: "Could not update storage account 'XXXX'. Error: The custom domain name could not be verified. CNAME mapping from mydomain.com to any of ..... does not exist "
I do not understand what I am doing wrong, I am very new in the subject and I really appreciate the help you can give me. Thank you very much
Be sure you have the CNAME record set correctly in the DNS settings for your domain name, then give it some time to update. DNS doesn't update immediately, it can take some time for the update to sync through all the DNS server between your registrar and Azure or your local ISP. This is especially the case when you test and it fails, then you need to wait at minimum the TTL (time-to-live) time that is set on the DNS records updated before you'll be able to test again.
On an aside, I'd recommend setting the TTL on the DNS records to 1/2 hour, then when everything's working you can go update it to a longer TTL. This will help when you need to update things and retest again to get it working.
I could already make the configuration I was looking for by configuring a CDN. this is the link learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/blobs/… Thanks everybody fot your answers and comments –
the company I’m working for provided me a subdomain. test.mycomp.com . I want to add it to my azure web app via custom domain.
The azure system recommends a CNAME delegation and provided me the information to enter web-zeudz-staging.azurewebsites.net in the dns management as CNAME.
After doing so and verifiying via DNS Lookup, Azure always gives me „Domain Ownership Error“. What can I do to make this work?
Is your DNS provider also a CDN provider, for example cloudflare? If so, turn off the CDN/proxy function so it's a DNS only record and try again.
If you don't have any control over the CDN function you can use txt record validation.
Create your TXT record awverify.subdomain.test.mycomp.com with value web-zeudz-staging.azurewebsites.net and validate again. It should succeed.
There's also a CNAME awverify method but you need CDN disabled for that too.
I find it strange that your company doesn't have the option to enable/disabled CDN for any given DNS entry though.
I published my webforms site to Azure and now want to set up a subdomain to point to it.
In Azure, app service->Custom domains-> Custom Hostnames -> Add hostname
I selected A record for the Hostname record type.
However when I click Validate the Hostname record type reverts to CName
How do I validate an A record ?
[Update]
I see from this link that CName records are recommended.
Overwriting my choices when I click validate is a strange way of enforcing the recommendation though.
The system detects the record type automatically according to the hostname when you validate it. It's not recommended to choose the record type manually.
There are two steps to map a custom domain.
Create one record card in your DNS provider.
Add the hostname in Azure portal.
If you haven't created any record, what you have done is just to validate the availability of the hostname you input. Azure will remind you of the ownership as bellow.
If you have created an A record, and the record type reverted to CNAME after validation, which means you have specified a subdomain like www.contososo.com. The A record is only used to map root domain like contososo.com.
To map domain using A record, you need to create two records. Here's the example.
If you want to use CNAME or get more details, you can refer to the link you mentioned.
I am trying to set up a secondary azure website in a different subscription.
When creating the Custom Hostname for the new site location, I am forced to validate the hostname.
Azure complains that the hostname is registered against a different CNAME and prevents me from adding it.
This is true, but I don't care, I want this to swap over from the old website to
the new one when the DNS records propagate.
I the old IIS world, I'd have just added the hostname to two servers and when the dns pointed to the correct one, it worked.
Now in Azure it validates that the Azure Hostname I am pointing it to is correct and that the cname record already exists, it isn't 'valid' until I change the DNS.
I have to disassociate the current cname, then add to my new site.
I'm sure the only issue here is the "validation", there is no reason why I can't have the name in two places, dns decides which it goes to, not the end point web site.
I'd like to be able to set this alias, whether valid or not, so that when it becomes valid, it works.
The result I get is validation prevent me adding the hostname.
- I have to ask the client to change the DNS Record
- when they manage to do that, they will tell me
- only then I can go in to Azure and add the hostname to make my site work.
There is documentation for this exact scenario: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/app-service/app-service-custom-domain-name-migrate
You can create a TXT record with host:
awverify.register.tourofmargaretriver.com
and value:
cyclingeventuresregistration-production-webapp.azurewebsites.net
This verifies domain ownership without directing traffic to it.
