How to add custom starting directory in WSL - linux

[dawidn:/mnt/c/Users/dawin]$
This is my default shell directory, all of my projects are on partition d. Is there a way to make my shell start at a certain folder by default?

Edit the file ~/.bashrc
At the end of the file add the line:
cd /mnt/d/.....
Save an close the file.
On logging back into bash, you should have the specified directory as your initial current working directory.

Move files between directories using shell script

I'm new to linux and shell script in general. I'm using a distribution of Debian on the WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux). I'm trying to write a very simple bash script that will do the following:
create a file in a directory (child-directory-a)
move to the directory it is in
move the file to another directory (child-directory-b)
move to that directory
move the file to the parent directory
This is what I have so far (trying to keep things extremely simple for now)
touch child-directory-a/test.txt
cd child-directory-a
mv child-directory-a/test.txt home/username/child-directory-b
The first two lines work, but I keep getting a 'no such directory exists' error with the last one. The directory exists and that is the correct path (checked with pwd). I have also tried using different paths (i.e. child-directory-b, username/child-directory-b etc.) but to no avail. I can't understand why it's not working.
I've looked around forums/documentation and it seems that these commands should work as they do in the command line, but I can't seem to do the same in the script.
If anyone could explain what I'm missing/not understanding that would be brilliant.

You could create the script like this:

# Move the file to CHILD_B
mv $CHILD_A/test.txt $CHILD_B/test.txt
# Move to CHILD_B
cd $CHILD_B
# Move the file to the parent folder
mv $CHILD_B/test.txt ../test.txt
Take into account the following:
We make sure that all the folders exists and are created.
Use variables to avoid typos, with the ability to load dynamic values from environment variables.
Use absolute paths to simplify the movement between folders.
Use relative paths to move files relatives to where we are.
Another command that might be of use is pwd. It will tell you the directory you are on.
with your second line, you change the current directory to child-directory-a
so, in your third line there is an error because there is no subdirectory child-directory-a into subdirectory child-directory-a
Your third line should be instead :
mv test.txt ../child-directory-b
The point #4 of your script should be:
cd ../child-directory-b
(before that command the current directory is home/username/child-directory-a and after this command it becomes home/username/child-directory-b)
Then the point #5 and final point of your script should be:
mv test.txt ..
NB: you can display the current directory at any line of your script by using the command pwd (print working directory) in your script, it that helps

Cygwin bash files

About a year ago, I created a couple text files called "compile" and "pull." When I go into a cygwin prompt and type those names and hit enter (basically use them as a command), the cygwin terminal runs what is in those text files. For instance here is the contents of one:
git checkout master
git checkout -- .
I don't even remember how I did this. I'm pretty sure this is not a bash script.
I do remember that I had to not just create the file in notepad but also perform some linux command line operation on it, in order to use it. Once I did that I could basically use the file as a command.
In *nix, you have to make a file executable in order to be able to run it:
chmod u+x file
You also need to add the path to the file to the PATH variable
PATH=$PATH:/path/to/the/file
or, add . to always scan the current directory for commands (it's considered unsecure, though):
PATH=$PATH:.

Create executable file for comand line Linux

When ever I log into Linux I usually go straight to the same folder i was wondering if in stead of typing in:
$cd Document/..../..../..../..../....
I could create an executable so I could just type ./csFolder and it would go straight there.
You can add a shell function in your .bashrc and restart your terminal:
csf() {
cd Document/..../..../..../..../....
}
Whenever you want to go to that directory, you just run csf.
Yo can do a symlink
ln -s /path/to/file /path/to/symlink
In addition to the other options (though if you use the function/alias option you want to use an absolute path to the target directory so it works from wherever you happen to be) you can use the environment variable CDPATH to help with this if you have a location you often go to from various other locations.
From the POSIX specification:
CDPATH
A -separated list of pathnames that refer to directories. The cd utility shall use this list in its attempt to change the directory, as described in the DESCRIPTION. An empty string in place of a directory pathname represents the current directory. If CDPATH is not set, it shall be treated as if it were an empty string.
Which means that if you set CDPATH to the parent of your target directory you can just use cd dirname from anywhere and go directly to the directory you wanted to be in.

Changes to PATH variable not working

For the life of me, I can't seem to add my Quartus bin directory to the PATH variable.
To add for all users, I edited /etc/profile by adding the line below as follows: (opening the file with sudo gedit /etc/profile)
/home/jaco/altera/14.0/quartus/bin/
I close the file, execute . ./etc/profile, after which I execute echo $PATH. This displays the directory I've just added, but when I open another shell and execute echo $PATH again, the directory is gone.
What am I doing wrong?
I have never made changes to /etc/profile but I know that env variables, aliases etc can be added to ~/.bashrc. You usually have to start a new shell or run source ~/.bashrc after editing your .bashrc file to load the new cahnges.
I think you will have to add it to all users. Also (this helps for future accounts) you can add it in your /etc/skel/.bashrc file. That is the skeleton file used when creating new users.

Add a bash script to path

I want to add a small script to the linux PATH so I don't have to actually run it where it's physically placed on disk.
The script is quite simple is about giving apt-get access through a proxy I made it like this:
#!/bin/bash
array=( $# )
len=${#array[#]}
_args=${array[#]:1:$len}
sudo http_proxy="http://user:password#server:port" apt-get $_args
Then I saved this as apt-proxy.sh, set it to +x (chmod) and everything is working fine when I am in the directory where this file is placed.
My question is : how to add this apt-proxy to PATH so I can actually call it as if it where the real apt-get ? [from anywhere]
Looking for command line only solutions, if you know how to do by GUI its nice, but not what I am looking for.
Try this:
Save the script as apt-proxy (without the .sh extension) in some directory, like ~/bin.
Add ~/bin to your PATH, typing export PATH=$PATH:~/bin
If you need it permanently, add that last line in your ~/.bashrc. If you're using zsh, then add it to ~/.zshrc instead.
Then you can just run apt-proxy with your arguments and it will run anywhere.
Note that if you export the PATH variable in a specific window it won't update in other bash instances.
You want to define that directory to the path variable, not the actual binary e.g.
PATH=$MYDIR:$PATH
where MYDIR is defined as the directory containing your binary e.g.
PATH=/Users/username/bin:$PATH
You should put this in your startup script e.g. .bashrc such that it runs each time a shell process is invoked.
Note that order is important, and the PATH is evaluated such that if a script matching your name is found in an earlier entry in the path variable, then that's the one you'll execute. So you could name your script as apt-get and put it earlier in the path. I wouldn't do that since it's confusing. You may want to investigate shell aliases instead.
I note also that you say it works fine from your current directory. If by that you mean you have the current directory in your path (.) then that's a potential security risk. Someone could put some trojan variant of a common utility (e.g. ls) in a directory, then get you to cd to that directory and run it inadvertently.
As a final step, after following the solution form proposed by #jlhonora (https://stackoverflow.com/a/20054809/6311511), change the permissions of the files in the folder "~/bin". You can use this:
chmod -R 755 ~/bin
make an alias to the executable into the ~/.bash_profile file and then use it from anywhere or you can source the directory containing the executables you need run from anywhere and that will do the trick for you.
adding to #jlhonora
your changes in ~./bashrc or ~./zshrc won't reflect until you do
source ~./zshrc or source ./bashrc , or restart your pc
