I just built a plugin for Revit 2019 and want to create an installer without having to put it on the Autodesk store. How should I go about it? At the moment I just copied the addin file in the addins folder to test it. How should I build an installer so that I can provide it to users so that they can just install it and it starts working? Also, Revit keeps on asking permission to load the addin. Is there any way to do it so that Revit does not ask permission to load the addin? Thanks in advance.

I'm looking for some advice. I need to develop some custom workflow activities for a SharePoint 365 online solution. To that extent I do not have a local install of SharePoint 2013. I am using Visual Studio 2012, and have the office developer tools for VS 2012 installed.
When I try to create an empty project for SharePoint 2013, I get the error stating:
SharePoint not installed. The required version of SharePoint
foundation 2013 or SharePoint server 2013 is not installed on this
system. To develop SharePoint solutions or browse SharePoint
connections in server explorer, SharePoint must be installed on the
local system. Make sure that the local server referenced by the
SharePoint project exists
Now, I understand that for SharePoint projects in the past that a local install was required, but with this being online, I do not have that luxury.
Ideally I'd like to identify a way in which I can create an empty project without the need for said local install.
Further to this, I have been able to create an "Apps for SharePoint 2013" project, into which I can create a custom workflow activity. I'm working through some excellent blog posts on how to develop custom activities and it seems to be working file to a point.
What I am now struggling with is that VS2012 is supposed to create an .actions4 file which I can edit to reflect what the workflow activity requires etc. I do not have this file, nor do I understand how I get it.
I would also appreciate information on how I can deploy this custom workflow activity to SharePoint Online so that I can use it in SharePoint designer workflows.
Appreciate there is a lot of asks here, but appreciate any help that people can provide.

There are no setup projects in VS 2012, unless you get the InstallShield LE add-in. VS 2010 had setup projects; VS 2013 supports the return of installer projects as an add-in. Therefore you may be stuck looking for a 3rd party solution, like InstallShield LE or any other number of other tools that can build setups and have a VS IDE add-in support (such as WiX). If you are keen on VS setup projects and want a simple tool that does the basics without you needing to learn too much, moving to VS 2013 and using the installer projects add-in would probably suit you.

I would like to be able to publish an application and have it so that someone could navigate to a website and download a setup executable. Then when they run that executable it would download and install all the associated applications that work with my application.
Is it possible to have visual studio publish it to do this?
Or do I have to program an custom setup application.
It seems that there are options for this in the publish section of the project properties.
But I can't seem to find out exactly what everything does.
There is an updates button in the publish tab that I would like someone to explain how that works as well.

So Microsoft released Visual Studio 2012 Express for desktop apps. That's great, but how does one create an installer for open source apps that are built in Visual Studio Express? There are no installer templates available by default, and they have disabled browsing the online gallery. Sure, I could purchase something like InstallShield, but that kind of defeats the purpose of an open source application if you ask me. Any suggestions?
You can use the open source NSIS or WiX tools to create fairly nice installers.
Since both should work without the Visual Studio integration that Express won't give you, they should both be usable (even if not quite as nicely) without problems.
I would use Inno Setup, which is a little easier to learn than most other setup programs.

I'm trying to move a solution I have over to Visual Studio 2012 and one of the project types is .vdproj.
According to this link this project type is not supported in Visual Studio 2012:
MSDN says they recommend that you use InstallShield Limited Edition for Visual Studio.
The problem is, when I open up my solution in VS2012 and try to add a new "Enable InstallShield Limited Edition" project to my solution, I get an error message saying:
Creating project 'test'...project creation failed.
Why might I not be able to add a project of this type to my solution?
If I make a new empty solution I can't make an InstallShield project it in either.
I'm going to try to download InstallShield limited edition and see if it does anything.
I tried out that InstallShield download, and it added two extra project types, but I'm unable to create either of them. I'm able to add normal website projects to my solutions just fine, but not deployment projects.
The installer was named the same, but this one prompted me to re-start. After re-starting I was able to add an InstallShield project, but it gets created in its own solution. So, it looks like now I have to figure out how to use it, and I'll be good to go.
It's looking like the limited edition doesn't have support to install Windows services.
This will probably be long and boring because there's lots of steps, but I'd like to write up how to move from a Windows service installer .vdproj to the new InstallShield LE that's available in Visual Studio 2012.
Step 1: Create a merge module (.msm)

The latest release of IsWiX doesn't enable the Tools menu item in Visual Studio 2012. Edit the file: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\MSEnvShared\AddIns\IsWiXAddin.Addin (XML) and clone the HostApplication element and update 10.0 to 11.0.
In step #8 of the guide, it references a code tab. This has been moved to the XML Editor item in the bottom of the left menu

After you're done with the guide you should have an empty .wxs file that looks something like this:
Using the Component XML element pulled from here you should end up with a .wxs file that looks like this:
Hit build and you should now have a .msm file.
Step 2: Adding merge module to InstallShield
Go though the wizard to setup the basic install information like company and version information.
Find the redistributables view in ISLE. Right click the list and select browse for module. After your module is found and added, right click the modules and select properties. Set the destination folder drop down to INSTALLDIR. I had to set mine to the lowest level folder I created for my install path, so you might have to experiment a bit.

If you're getting errors about the path being too long you might need to change the release location to something close to the root.

Now you should be able to run your installer and have it install/start a Windows service. A lot more work than .MSI files, we got it to generate in Visual Studio 2010, but overall it was not too bad.
While there is no easy or truly supported solution for Visual Studio 2012, Visual Studio 2013 users can get an extension from Microsoft in the Visual Studio Gallery.
I found this post which says you must download InstallShield first. It's a very confusing way to work. I suggest to vote up the post on the connect site and give them comments letting know how poor that is.
