How do I close an Excel spreadsheet in VBA code? - excel

I have the following routine below that is meant to open an Excel spreadsheet and then go row by row to import the results into a table that is passed in. It works fine but the problem is if I try to open that same spreadsheet a second time I get a message that the file is in use and I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to shut down Excel before I can use it again. I thought that the Set mySheet=Nothing and Set xlApp=Nothing would release the file but apparently not. What more can I do to make sure that Access lets go of the Excel file? Thanks in advance!

Try using
xlApp.Quit
When you set xlApp to nothing you are only clearing the object within the procedure, you aren't doing anything to the actual Excel instance. All that setting XXX = nothing allows you to do is then reuse that object.

You will need to legally close the workbooks that are open as in
xlApp.Workbooks.Close
EXITSUB:
This will close the instances that are open.
Prior to this, kill all the instances or reboot your machine to clear all the instances that are open.

I am new to VBA and macros.
I got the repeated task of copy data from Excel and paste it in a particular location in the word document.

When i try to get the values from the range of cells in excel, i got the following error for the code.

I recommend to use Option Explicit and declare all your varibales properly. This way it is less likely that you end up with unseen errors.
To activate it for all new codes that you add in the future, you can activate it directly in Excel and Word. This is a good practice and will protect you from doing it wrong by notifying you of not declared variables:
In the VBA editor go to Tools › Options › Require Variable Declaration.
This will add Option Explicit to new modules only. In existing modules Option Explicit needs to be added manually as first line.
Further I highly recommend to name your variables according what they contain because otherwise it gets very confusing. You named your variable xlSheet but you load a workbook into it and not a worksheet.
The next issue is that your code is in Word and if you declare rng As Range then this is of type Word.Range and not Excel.Range and those are diffetent types so that is why you get a "Type Mismatch" error.
To solve this you either go in Word VBA to Extras › Refereces … and set a reference to the Excel library so you can declare your variable Dim xlRng As Excel.Range or if you don't set a reference you declare it as Object or Variant like in below example:

In your VBScript xlObj is set to be an application Set xlObj = CreateObject("Excel.Application"). That means xlObj.Application should be xlObj only.
In your VBScript Filename is not declared nor set to a value therefore it is empty. You need to define value to it.

In your function you use Exit Function. This will stop the code immediately at this point, which means your workbook myWb will not be closed! It stays open because myWb.Close is never reached. Change Exit Function to Exit For to just exit the loop and continue to close the workbook.
Cells(1, i).Value is neither specified which workbook it is in nor which worksheet. This is not very reliable never call Cells or Range without specifying workbook and worksheet (or Excel will guess which one you mean, and Excel can fail if you are not precise).
Therfore I recommend to use something like myWb.Worksheets(1).Cells(1, i).Value if you always mean the first worsheet in that workbook. Alternatively if it has a defined name using its name would be more reliable: myWb.Worksheets("SheetName").Cells(1, i).Value
If you turn off ScreenUpdating don't forget to turn it on in the end.
Error handling in case filename does not exist would be nice to not break the function.
You can slightly improve speed by assuming Headers = "True" as default and just turn it False in case you find any non matching header. This way the variable is only set once to True instead of multiple times for every correct header.

Import data from an Excel file to an Access table

I'm trying to import the data from an Excel file selected by the user and importing it's data into a table in access.

Writing to Named Cells in Excel from Access

I've Searched Forums here and I can't seem to get this code to work.
I am Trying to Open a Workbook in Excel, and then populate a few of the Cells(Named Ranges). I can successfully open the workbook(the workbook has a bit of VBA that runs when it opens as well, formatting stuff only) but when I get down to the inputting information I get a 'Run-Time Error "438" Object Doesn't support this property or method.'
From the Previous answers on other similar questions I have done everything the way it was suggested however, I can't seem to get it to work.

Reason being is that you have the ws object set already, so there is no need to assign parentage to it again. In fact, trying to do so will break syntax rules.
FWIW (not your issue - that is solved by Scott's answer): Note that

should be
Set ws = wb.Worksheets("CountSheet").
Using xlapp.Worksheets("CountSheet")
is effectively xlApp.ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets("CountSheet") which might be (and probably is) xlApp.Workbooks("VISION - EXCEL FILES\VISIONCOUNT.xlsm").Worksheets("CountSheet") but it is better to do it correctly rather than leave it to chance.

Remove Excel task from Task manager after running from Access using VBA

I will now take the opportunity to ask here, I have really tried a lot of different way, but it seems that I am not able to be able to close the Excel task in task-manger, It hangs until I close Access completely, annoying, because I can not run two different jobs using Excel from Access. Second job will give me errors.
I have made some comments to where I still is able to get rid of Excel.
The purpose for the code is to run some query's and export data to excel and then lock the excel sheet so users only can fill in answers to the data.

In the comments you mentioned that you had reset your code (i.e. pressed the stop button). This means that the portion of your code that kills excel did not run, thus leaving an open session of excel. There is a small (possibly semantic) issue with your code, but I don't believe that's what was causing your issue. Regardless, you should properly shut down the application like this.

Adding as an answer just in case. Fully qualify this with the worksheet name and try again. This same problem was a huge bother to me too. You have to qualify 100% of your references, no matter what. Also, be super careful about using With statements on ranges, worksheets etc. So change it to ObjWorksheet.Columns("A:F")... instead
