I'm working with the new Azure Static Web Apps Preview product, not to be confused with Azure Web Apps.
My Angular 9 app, which runs fine locally, is all set up for internationalization, and one effect of the internationalization is that it drops my index.html into app/catfood/dist/en_US rather than app/catfood/dist.
This is leaving me stuck in terms of how to set the app_artifact_location value in the workflow file. If I leave it at the default value of "dist/catfood" the build gives me this error, which honestly does seem accurate as the index.html isn't going to be there:
Failed to find a default file in the app artifacts folder (dist/congruence-web). Valid default files: index.html,Index.html.
If your application contains purely static content, please verify that the variable 'app_location' in your workflow file (located in .github/workflows) points to the root of your application.
If your application requires build steps, please validate that a default file exists in the build output directory.
But if I change it to the logical "dist/catfood/en_US" I get this error:
The app build failed to produce artifact folder: 'dist/catfood/en_US'. Please ensure this property is configured correctly in your workflow file.
Really not sure what the build system is expecting of me. What should I be using for app_artifact_location? Or am I even tweaking the wrong thing here?
Update: When I deliberately turn off i18n in angular.json, the en_US directory goes away and index.html is found in dist/catfood and everything works great. So basically the problem is "Why does Azure Static Web Apps not understand localized Angular applications?"

I'm playing around with Azure Static Web Apps and have built a simple Blazor App which I've deployed. I added a Contacts page with an image that appears when built and running in Visual Studio but the image is missing when the app is is deployed via a GitHub Workflow Action. I've checked the file is present in the GitHub repo. I'm just using the free version of Azure static web apps for testing and believe the files are deployed to blob storage.
I can see two similar related questions to my problem but neither of them provide a solution to my issue

As per the link to the first question above, is there a way to see the files deployed to check if the file is actually there? Everything I'm seeing tells me it's not! - the image is not showing and copying the link to a new window gives me the usual file not found. Link looks absolutely spot on - https://madeupbit.azurestaticapps.net/FundXWebTelNo1.png. I deliberately moved the file out of a separate images directory into the root to eliminate any of the possible issues mentioned in the second question linked above.
And I guess the second question is if it's not there, how do I get it there seeing the automated GitHub Workflow Action ain't doing it. Of course there may be something else going on so any suggestions welcome!
I would be most grateful if anyone could help me solve this problem with ClickOnce Web deployment.
I have read all the threads on this subject and I have also read through all the Microsoft documentation on the subject. They seem to say a lot without actually being direct or providing helpful examples. However, perhaps I am wrong and I have not looked in the right places.
I have already used ClickOnce successfully to deploy an application on the local area network.
It works well and really isn't that complicated. However, my goal is to deploy this application to customers, who are not connected to my local network.
I have set up a web site (www.mydomain.co.za), which I can access directly or via the ftp protocol.
I have created a sub directory off the root where I intend to publish the files created by the publish function. The publish function of the application requires a Publishing Folder Location and a Installation Folder URL I don't really understand the functional difference between these two locations. If I set the Publishing Location to ftp://www.mydomain.co.za/MyProductName and the Installation Folder URL to http://www.mydomain.co.za/MyProductName, then the publish process succeeds and when I check on the web server, the files have been published successfully it would seem. A further Application Files/MyProductName subdiectory with the version number information appended was created where all the output was placed.
My next step is to then grab the URL of the setup.exe file and to run it from a browser. This downloads the setup.exe file to my downloads folder which I then try to run but I get an error
Deployment and application do not have matching security zones.>
I have seen this come up in other threads but These threads don't seem to relate directly to what I am trying to do. These threads make mention of using Internet Explorer to achieve some degree of success, but all the browser did was to download the file.
I have also noted with interest that a web page is created in the root with a button that prompts the user to install the application. This does not work either.
Does anyone know of an article that I can read on this subject which is more helpful or if anyone can offer more insights into this I would be very grateful.
We have a Node.js application with a pretty big codebase that we're trying to deploy to an Azure Web Site. My problem is that when I deploy the app and try to access it, I just get a message saying "The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred".
According to http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/web-sites-nodejs-debug/ I should be able to configure some settings and have my standard out be logged to a file - well, it's not working. in /LogFiles I can see /git, /html, and /DetailedErrors, but none of these folders contain the stdout logs.
I have deployed the app using Visual Studio. I created a blank Azure project, and manually added all the folders and files I need. I also created an iisnode.yml file that contains the following config:
loggingEnabled: true
devErrorsEnabled: true
logDirectory: ./logs
debugHeaderEnabled: true
The last two lines I added later, the first ones are from the tutorial. I also have a web.config file, the contents of which I haven't really touched.
I've attempted to configure the settings that are available in the Web Sites UI, but I haven't really been able to make any headway. I think currently they are pretty much default.
I'm sorry that I can't provide you with more information. I'm really kind of banging my head against the wall here, since all the tutorials I've found basically state that if I do this and that, everything should work. The problem is, it doesn't. Sad face.
Edit: I should probably add that my server.js is in a folder called /NodeServer. It's not in the root as Azure seems to presume.
Edit2: I deployed a Hello World example and got it to work, but when I try to move the server.js file from the root I can't get it to work anymore.
I've added a tag to the web.config, so that the structure is basically
configuration

I've also edited my package.json so that it says

If the app is started successfully, you should be able to find the stdout at
D:\home\LogFiles\Application
in Azure Websites, without configuring anything.
But here it looks like an error related to incorrect/missing web.config. The node app may not get launched. You can try:
Publishing your app using git to Azure Websites.

Or try publishing an "hello world" node.js app to Azure Websites, take the generated web.config and modify it for your app.
Edit: When you change the location of server.js, you have to change web.config too. The change in web.config is not correct. And package.json is only used as hints to generate web.config during git deployment. To get your "hello world" to work, you can either
In your web.config, replace all "server.js" with "NodeServer/server.js".
Or deploy the modified app using git. Make sure it does not contain the wrong web.config.
Then you can try to get your larger app to work.
I have an ASP.NET MVC 4 app that I'm trying to deploy as an Azure Web Site. My app works fine in my local environment. When I publish the site to azure though, I receive the following error:
Multiple types were found that match the controller named 'Root'. This can happen if the route that services this request ('') does not specify namespaces to search for a controller that matches the request. If this is the case, register this route by calling an overload of the 'MapRoute' method that takes a 'namespaces' parameter.
The request for 'Views' has found the following matching controllers:
MyApp.HD.Web.Controllers.RootController
MyApp.Web.Controllers.RootController
Why would I get this error on Azure but not locally? I can't figure out how to get around it.

I've had this problem before. Let me explain why it happened.
We added a new project to our solution, let's call it NewProject. This project had been set up incorrectly so we recreated it as NewProject2. Once the project was setup and working, we renamed it to NewProject. This is when the problem started. Under certain build configurations we were getting the same error as you. It was complaining about ambiguous controllers with namespaces NewProject and NewProject2. Doing a find-in-files returned no matches for NewProject2. The was thoroughly frustrating. Given that this was only occuring under certain build configurations was a big sign that the problem was with left-over references in the bin folder(s). Doing a clean didn't seem to fix the problem. The ultimate fix was to do a complete code purge. DLLs typically do not get committed to source control. I backed up and deleted all code and got it back from source control. The issue no longer occurs.
It's worth mentioning that this issue was not global. It only occurred on certain developer machines. I figure the ones that were affect were the ones that had gotten latest from source control during the process of create1/create2/rename2/delete1.
Try doing a clean and rebuild in the affected build config.
Try manually removing your bin and obj folders.
Try a complete code purge
A couple of days ago, Microsoft released the engine they're using to do git deployments to Azure. I've had a task on my TODO list for a while to get that kind of functionality set up on my DEV IIS server, so I'm interested in trying out Kudu for that purpose.
The "Getting Started" document shows how to run the web front-end, but everything in there uses "http://localhost:PORTNUMBER" type URL's for git repositories, site URL's, etc.
I realize this is probably getting too far ahead of them, but I'm wondering if anyone has pointers for how to set it up using real domains on "regular" IIS instead of all of the localhost bits?
This is an old question, so I'm giving an updated answer with more current info since I just worked through setting up Kudu on an internal deployment server. The currently selected answer only deals with if you are directly running Kudu from within a development environment.
If you are deploying to a "production" type environment and don't want to install Visual Studio on the target server, there is a good guide on the project website on github.

On the target server, you will need to install:
MSBuild ( http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=309745 ) - comes with Visual Studio
NodeJS ( http://nodejs.org )
Git ( http://git-scm.com/downloads )
Back on your development machine, clone the git repo and build using the "build.cmd" file, following instructions in the above link.
In running build.cmd I got several test failures which blocked the build from producing artifacts. These were all related to Mercurial, which we don't use. Installing a Mercurial client didn't make them magically go away, so I disabled the tests rather than sink a bunch of time into debugging my environment.
Your build output will indicate the failures. I disabled by commenting out the [Fact] attribute.
These are the tests I disabled:
tests/Kudu.Core.Test/HgRepositoryFacts.cs (all tests)
Once you have a successful build that has created all the items in the artifacts you can move to deploying the Kudu website and web service code. The below instructions are for setting up a distinct web application instance, rather than dumping everything in c:\inetpub\wwwroot, which is how the instructions read.
Copy "artifacts\Release\KuduWeb" to the target area on the server where your website will run from. I run my kudu install with a separate host header, but you could as easily use a separate port or run as the root website. This directory will be the root for your web application.
Create an empty "App_Data" folder immediately under the KuduWeb folder.
Copy "artifacts\Release\SiteExtensions\Kudu" to the same level as the folder in step 1 and rename to "Kudu.Services.Web". This location is set as a relative path in the KuduWeb web.config file - setting serviceSitePath.
Open IIS Admin and create a website pointing to the "KuduWeb" folder from step 1.
Configure the app pool from step 4 to run as "LocalSystem". This is required to manage IIS Sites.
Create a new folder "apps" at the same level as KuduWeb. This is where deployments will be sent. Note: this location is controlled in the KuduWeb web.config file - setting "sitesPath"
Change filesystem permissions to grant "Users" full access to the "apps" folder created in the above step.
On starting my Kudu website, I got the following error.
Parser Error Message: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.Mvc, Version=5.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.
For some reason it didn't copy the appropriate MVC version into the deployment artifacts.
If you hit this error, the MVC 5 file can be obtained via NuGet. I found that my source code was built against 5.1.0, so this is the appropriate link:

In order to extract the dll, I set up a new dummy project and used NuGet to pull down the dll via the package manager console.
Install-Package Microsoft.AspNet.Mvc -Version 5.1.0
Once you get the binary, copy it from package directory ( .\packages\Microsoft.AspNet.Mvc.5.1.0\lib\net45\System.Web.Mvc.dll ) to the website bin directory on the target machine.
At this point you are up and running. Use the web interface to create your application. It will create a subfolder under the "apps" directory with a tree that should be self explanatory. It will also have created two new websites for your application:
kudu_{your-app-name}
kudu_service_{your-app-name}
In a production situation, you should create an additional website running on appropriate port/host header that points to: .\apps\\site\wwwroot
Now you can add a git remote for your deployment. Go to your source location in a git console (ex: Git Bash) and add the remote as identified by Kudu. Note: you may need to change localhost in the url to be the appropriate server name.
git remote add deploy http://:52711/your-app-name.git
Push your code to the new "deploy" remote and see what happens. You should see all the normal push messages, plus the build output.
git push deploy master
My initial push failed to build and deploy due to "node" not being recognized. It was in the path, so a server reset convinced the path environment variable to be refreshed. You may find additional errors to work through. For instance, I had an issue with MSBuild being imported and causing a hiccup.
error MSB4019: The imported project "C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\Visual Studio\v11.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" was not found.
YMMV, but these are all solvable problems now. Good continuous deploying!
The project automatically sets up two websites on IIS for each application you add using the web front end. Kudu doesn't automatically map the bindings for them but it's relatively easy to open IIS and find the two sites named "kudu_appname" and "kudu_appname_service". The service website is the one that you point GIT too and the other one is the site itself. Just add public bindings to them by right-clicking and "edit bindings". You can then add public hostnames to them.
This is the easy part. The hard part that I'm still working on is getting authentication working so any random Joe isn't able to push to my kudu repository!
