How to stop backgrounddownload exe - windows-10

As per attached screen shot BackgroundDownload.exe is running in background and consuming lots of internet data. How it can be stopped?

This however does not stop VS from recreating BackgoundDownload.exe in 'random' temp directories and trying again. There must be some other missed option. Perhaps disabling the scheduled task in 'task scheduler' would finalize the change.
Through control panel, or other means,
open 'Task Scheduler'. in the navigation pane on the left side, navigate to
"Task Scheduler Library>Microsoft>VisualStudio>Updates"
when there, you will see a task named 'BackroundDownload'
Right click on this task and either disable, or delete it.

Please check if its checked “Automatically download updates” in VS2019?
Uncheck it.
Tools->Options->Environment->Product Updates->Automatically download updates

The same update process initiated by from Visual Studio Code. You can disable it via settings menu (and do not forget to uncheck sending telemetry)

It's possible to turn background downloading off for all installed Visual Studio products by creating/changing a registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\Setup\BackgroundDownloadDisabled = 1
Source: https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/t/visual-studio-background-downloader-keeps-running/948890#T-N950950

Please go to your connectivity setting I mean I am using my hotspot from mobile.
go to your wifi icon on windows 10.
then select properties and it will take you to another screen.
there is toggle switch called metered connection. select it .
That's it if wants to download also it cannot.
As a default windows does not allow you to download any updates in background.
You can do it when you are want. .[Step 2][2]

there is another way
Open Windows Defender Firewall With Advanced Security from the search next to Start
Then click on (( Outbound Rules -> New Rules ))
Now a new page will open, click ( Program ), then click (Next)
Now click on (This Program Path)
And enter this URL :
(%ProgramFiles% (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\Installer\resources\app\ServiceHub\Services\Microsoft.VisualStudio.Setup.Service\BackgroundDownload.exe)
Now click Next again and select Block The Connection on this page and click Next again
Do not touch anything on this page (Profile) and click on Next
Finally, select a name in the (Name) field and write a series of descriptions if needed

In Windows 10 how do I add a program to the main "Open With" menu not "Choose another App"

With Windows 7 I could easily use the Open With context menu to add a new program which would thereafter appear in the Open With menu (I can't remember the exact sequence, but it was easy and worked fine). However I have now upgraded to Windows 10. The programs that I associated with my particular file extension in W7 still appear in the Open With menu in W10. If I want to add another one I select "Choose Another App". However, any app I add with W10 does not appear in the Open With menu - I have to select Choose Another App every time to get to it. I now have two lists of available apps, one in Open With (the ones I set up with W7) and one in Open With | Choose Another App (the ones I set up with W10). It's not exactly a show stopper but it's irritating. Does anyone know what this is all about and how I can get the apps into the main Open With menu?
The reason why it doesn't appear in "Open with" menu is most likely because application's VERSIONINFO is not properly filled out with all the relevant details. If you are application developer you should create VERSIONINFO resource as clarified here:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/menurc/versioninfo-resource
If you are not the developer, then you can still fix this by editing registry - see here:
https://superuser.com/questions/1199648/strange-open-with-list-inconsistent-with-registry/1256482#1256482
Basically under the registry key: Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\MuiCache there should be 2 keys for YourExampleApp:
One that ends with .FriendlyAppName
One that ends with .ApplicationCompany
For example:
C:\Program Files (x86)\ExampleApp\YourExampleApp.exe.FriendlyAppName
C:\Program Files (x86)\ExampleApp\YourExampleApp.exe.ApplicationCompany
Most likely one of these 2 is missing which causes the application to be dropped out of the "Open with" menu.
The MuiCache list is cached from the properties of the application's VERSIONINFO resource embedded in the application, so if such resource is missing from the application, some items may be missing from the cache as well. For more details have a look at the above references.
Coder12345 had the correct answer for me, thanks a ton! I would like to expand on it briefly; I wanted Shotcut to appear in the first open with... context menu. I had to add the registry entry for ApplicationCompany. It appears that it doesn't matter what you put for the value of that key, just as long as it's there. No restart of file explorer was required, the change takes place immediately.
Also, the FriendlyAppName changes what text appears in the open with submenu. Shotcut appeared as shotcut.exe so I changed it to just Shotcut.

How to disable automatic check out from Visual Studio 2012?

Whenever I open any solution in VS2012 from local path (which is mapped in TFS), the files are automatically checking out. I want to disable this feature.
I tried to disconnect from TFS and to work on it, But it is closing the solution. Plesase help me out in achieving this. I didn't get this problem before when I was using VS2010
You need to unbind your project(s) from TFS source control.
Select the project or solution from the Solution Explorer
From the main menu select File->Source Control->Advanced->Change Source Control...
Select one or all projects and press the "Unbind" button on the top of the dialog
select ok to the warning popup
You can later bind the projects again, personally I don't do this so I can't say how well it works. I found some more info here
Here are the visual steps:
This brings up the dialog to select projects to bind/unbind.
I had to select one at a time.
Select "Unbind" for each project
Here's what it should look like when unbound.
You can later come back and bind the projects again and TFS will try and reconcile your changes.
Try rather change Checked-in items (Saving, Editing) to 'Prompt for check out'
Tools -> Options -> Source Control -> Enviroment -> Checked-in items
Disable the following option. It should solve your problem.
Tools -> Options -> Source Control -> Enviroment -> Get everything when a solution or project is opened

Hotkey to open TFS Source Control Explorer in Visual Studio 2012?

Currently I have to open Team Explorer and click on Source Control Explorer as below snapshot.
I do this very often and need a hotkey for that.
What is it then?
Try with below step:
Go to Options of Tools menu
Select the Keyboard from Environment
Select View.TfsSourceControlExplorer from Show commands containing:. You can type View.TFS in the textbox to filter the list.
Enter your hotkey in Press shorcut keys => click on Assign
Hope it helps!
According to a comment that I found in the site that #Adarsh mentioned, Alt+V,E,S will open the Source Control Explorer. It's a couple extra keystrokes but it works for me!
You can use Ctrl+0,P to open the Pending Changes Window.
You can find all the shortcuts for team Explorer on this blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/buckh/archive/2012/06/06/team-explorer-2012-keyboard-shortcuts.aspx
Update:
In Visual Studio 2013 Ctrl+0,P doesn't seem to work to open Pending Changes, but you can use Alt-V,E,H or configure a custom shortcut in the menu Tools/Options/Environment/Keyboard.
Just wanted to share another alternative I learned. One could set an alias in VS Command Window and launch it from there.
alias sce View.TfsSourceControlExplorer
note- 'sce' is an alias of your choice. I generally abbreviate. Obvious but having a pattern will be helpful if you have many of these.
Steps:
Open command window (ctrl+alt+A)
Set the alias (the statement shown
above)
Next time you need to launch the Source Control Explorer,
switch/launch command window and type your alias name. 'sce' in the
above example.
Alt+V,E,S works for me even in VS 2015

IN VS 2015

How do I make an Office 2013/2016 application run in separate process on Microsoft Windows?

I am developing a Excel plugin. It works all right for Excel versions before 2013. But a lot of features is broken when it runs against Excel 2013. I found the root cause is all windows are running in only one process in Excel 2013. Even if user explicitly launch a new window by double-clicking the shortcut on the desktop or by clicking the item in the start menu, no new process is created.
This results in the status conflict between processes. Status bar and ribbon is shared. For instance, when I update the status bar information in one window, the other windows' are also updated. When I check/uncheck a ribbon button in one window, the other windows' buttons are also checked/unchecked.
I think a possible solution is to change some configurations to make it work as before. But I found nothing relevant by searching on google.
Does anyone know how to make it or is there any other solution?
With Excel 2013, the default you have is to create a new window within the existing Excel process. In order to force the creation of a separate instance of the Excel process, you have these options:
Option 1
From the command prompt, run EXCEL /X and you will open Excel window as a new instance. The /X command switch forces the creation of a new instance.
Option 2
Right click on the Excel icon in Windows taskbar
Go down to where it lists the application
Hold down the ALT key on the keyboard and click "Excel 2013/2016"
It should give you this prompt, "Do you want to start a new instance of Excel?"
Click "Yes!"
Option 3
Use this technique to open an existing document directly:
Hold down Alt.
Right click Excel file.
Click Open.
Continue holding down Alt until the "Do you want to start a new instance of Excel" dialogue pops up.
Click Yes.
For more detail,please visit:
http://sqlblog.com/blogs/marco_russo/archive/2012/07/24/running-excel-2013-in-a-separate-instance-excel-powerpivot.aspx
re. "Right click on the Excel Tab in Windows taskbar keeping the ALT key pressed"
-This option is not available in Windows 10 with Excel 2016.
However, the Excel /X option works and a second change-undo buffer is created, as noted above, in the new process.

TFS Pending Changes keyboard commands in VS2012

I'm using VS2012 with TFS2010 (which may or may not matter).
I cannot seem to get any of the keyboard commands that should work with the Pending Changes window to, y'know, work.
I've tried the steps listed here, and I've tried binding keys to ever "CompareWith" commands listed in the keyboard dialog. The only ones that actually seem to do anything are the File.* commands, but those operate on the open file, and not the Pending Changes window.
I've seen that commands like Alt-I (check-in) work, but they don't appear in the Keyboard settings.
Does the new window in VS2012 have its own set of keyboard settings that are set somewhere else? I'm trying to get to the point of have an keyboard-only workflow for Comparing, the Excluding or Undoing.
Update:
This is really strange. I can actually see the shortcut keys in the right-click dialog, but pressing them does nothing. I then tried changing it to a chord, and I get the error message: "The key combination (Ctrl+Shift+Q, Ctrl+Shift+Q) is bound to command (Tfs.ContextPendingChangesPageExcludeChanges) which is not currently available"
Update 2: I found this blog post, which has some more shortcuts listed, but not that actually do operations on the individual files. For quick reference, here's his list:
Shortcut Team Explorer Page
Ctrl+' Search
Ctrl+0,H Home
Ctrl+0,P Pending Changes
Ctrl+0,M My Work
Ctrl+0,W Work Items
Ctrl+0,B Build
Ctrl+0,R Reports
Ctrl+0,D Documents
Ctrl+0,S Settings
Ctrl+0,A Web Access – team home page
F5 Refresh
Ctrl+Up Move focus to the previous visible section header
Ctrl+Down Move focus to the next visible section header
Alt+Left Navigate backward
Alt+Right Navigate forward
Alt+Home Focus the navigation control
Alt+0 Focus the page top level content
Alt+[1-9] Focus the visible section [1-9] level content
Alt+Up Focus the previous visible section content
Alt+Down Focus the next visible section content
There is a bug with key bindings in some Team Explorer pages in VS 2012 RTM. This has been fixed for the next VS 2012 update.
