I am having schema like below:
const commentSchema = new Schema({
name: String,
surname: String,
email: String,
positions: [
{ detail: [{
type: Schema.Types.ObjectId,
ref: 'Position'
}],
progress: { type: String }, // keep track of the status
comment: { type: String } // keep track of internal notes
}],
});
Field detail contains array of mongo ids.
I am trying with below code but not getting the populated data:
const requirementsData = await Requirement.find({})
.populate({
path: "positions.detail",
model: Position,
})
.exec(function(err, docs) {
if(err){
console.log("err====", err)
}else{
res.render('candidates/show', {candidate: docs})
}
});
if I understand your problem you can do this
.populate({
path:'position',
populate:{path:'details'}
})

Error Image Actually i've an Object in which i have an array of semesters, each semester has an array of subjects and each subject has an array of lessons.
I want to add lesson to its respective semester and subject.
I use findById to find respective semester from Object but when i use findById again to find particular subject from array of subj's.
It gives me error.
Semester.findById(req.body.semesterId).populate({ path: 'subjects' })
.exec((err, model) => {
[model.subjects.findById(req.body.subjectId, (err, model) => {
console.log(model)
})][1]
})
})
I would personally structure my Schema's like so:
const semesterSchema = mongoose.Schema({
number: { type: Number, required: true },
subjects: [{ type: mongoose.SchemaTypes.ObjectId, ref: 'Subject' }]
})
const subjectSchema = mongoose.Schema({
semester: { type: mongoose.SchemaTypes.ObjectId, ref: 'Semester', required: true },
title: { type: String },
lessons: [{ type: mongoose.SchemaTypes.ObjectId, ref: 'Lesson' }]
})
const lessonSchema = mongoose.Schema({
semester: { type: mongoose.SchemaTypes.ObjectId, ref: 'Semester', required: true },
subject: { type: mongoose.SchemaTypes.ObjectId, ref: 'Subject', required: true },
title: { type: String },
test: { type: Object }
})
What this does is provides cyclical references to my schemas which is quite nice in some cases.
To solve the case your describing, we could do something like this:
const { semesterId, subjectId } = req.body; // destructure variables needed from body
Semester
.findById(semesterId)
.populate({ path: 'subjects' })
.lean() // use lean() if you only require the document and not the entire mongoose object. i.e. you do not require .save(), .update(), etc methods.
.exec((err, semester) => {
const subject = semester.subjects.find(subject => subject._id === subjectId );
console.log(subject);
});
// ****** THIS ASSUMES YOU HAVE FOLLOWED MY DEFINED SCHEMA ABOVE ********
Alternatively, you could directly query the subject and populate the semester if you want that data like so:
const { semesterId, subjectId } = req.body;
Subject
.findById(subjectId)
.populate({ path: 'semester' })
.lean()
.exec((err, subject) => {
console.log(subject);
});
// ****** THIS ASSUMES YOU HAVE FOLLOWED MY DEFINED SCHEMA ABOVE ********
I have two documents in mongodb:
export const Category = mongoose.model('Category', new mongoose.Schema({
name: { type: String },
}));
export const SubCategory = mongoose.model('SubCategory', new mongoose.Schema({
name: { type: String },
category: { type: mongoose.Schema.Types.ObjectId, ref: 'Category' },
}));
How to find All SubCategory that match Category by name?
I have try a lot of ways but I always getting null or error...
var name = '...';
SubCategory.find({ category: { name } });
SubCategory.find({ category: { name } }).populate('category');
You can use aggregation for the same. Please read this documentation https://docs.mongodb.com/manual/reference/operator/aggregation/lookup/
Note:- This answer is based on your collection and data you have entered. this is not perfect but this will help best to find the logic from this answer. :-)
//collection 1 schema
const collection1Schema = new Schema({
user_id: {
type: String,
required: true
},
status: {

}
});
mongoose.model('Collection1', collection1Schema);
//collection 2 schema
const collection2Schema = new Schema({
user_id: {
type: Schema.Types.ObjectId,

},
item: {
type: String
}
});
mongoose.model('Collection2', collection2Schema);
//find data from collection2
Collection2.find()
.populate('user_id')
.exec(function(err, foundDocuments) {

console.error(err);
} else {
console.log(foundDocuments);
}

I am trying to develop a CRUD app for users to store, add, delete and update recipes. It's built on MEVN stack. As I need to show the user, which recipes they have created, I am trying to create a recipe based on this model:
const RecipeSchema = new Schema({
title: {
type: String,
required: [true, 'Title of the recipe is required'],
},
category: {
type: Array,
required: [true, 'Category is required'],
},
description: {
type: String,
required: [true, 'Description is required'],
},
imgUrl: {
type: String,
required: [true, 'Image is required'],
},
ingredients: {
type: Array,
required: [true, 'Ingredients are required'],
},
timeOfPreparation: {
type: String,
required: true,
},
preparation: {
type: String,
required: true,
},
sourceName: {
type: String,
required: true,
},
sourceUrl: {
type: String,
required: true,
},
author: [{ type: mongoose.Schema.Types.ObjectId, ref: 'User' }],
});
const Recipe = mongoose.model('Recipe', RecipeSchema);
module.exports = Recipe;
And at the same time update User model, based on this:
const UserSchema = Schema({
googleId: String,
name: String,
favorites: [{ type: mongoose.Schema.Types.ObjectId, ref: 'Recipe' }],
authoredRecipes: [{ type: mongoose.Schema.Types.ObjectId, ref: 'Recipe' }],
});
const User = mongoose.model('User', UserSchema);
module.exports = User;
In the controller, I have this method (as per #Stock Overflaw comment):
exports.create_new_recipe = (req, res, next) => {
Recipe.create(req.body)
.then(recipe => {
User.update(
{ _id: req.body.author },
{
$push: { authoredRecipes: recipe.id },
}
);
res.send(res.status);
})
.catch(error => {
res.status(500).json({ error });
});
};
This method is called when I go to /create endpoint. However, even though I do get all the correct ids (req.body.author and recipe.id), I cannot get this to work. In my mLab recipe collection the recipe is displayed correctly (all data that I have inserted with authorId), however in the User collection, the array of authoredRecipes stays empty.
How can I get mongoose to both create an object in one collection as well as update another object based on their ids?
The documentation for findByIdAndUpdate requires the _id field as its value, not an object:
User.findByIdAndUpdate(req.body.author, {
$push: { authoredRecipes: recipe.id }
});
// equivalent to the more general method:
User.findOneAndUpdate({ _id: req.body.author }, {
$push: { authoredRecipes: recipe.id }
});
// and if you don't need the modified document in your callback, this should be faster:
// EDIT: this is advised against (we should use a user object, not the collection)
User.update({ _id: req.body.author }, { // or updateOne
$push: { authoredRecipes: recipe.id }
});
Edit: a working, minimal example
Mind {new: true} maybe? Depending on how you test whether it works...
const mongoose = require('mongoose');
const fs = require('fs');
const userIdFile = './tmp.txt'; // just for this test
mongoose.connect('mongodb://localhost/meuh', {
useNewUrlParser: true, // removes a deprecation warning
useFindAndModify: false // removes another deprecation warning
});
// make schemas/models
const RecipeSchema = mongoose.Schema({
title: { type: mongoose.Schema.Types.String }
});
const UserSchema = mongoose.Schema({
name: { type: mongoose.Schema.Types.String },
data: [{ type: mongoose.Schema.Types.ObjectId, ref: 'Recipe' }]
});
const RecipeModel = mongoose.model('Recipe', RecipeSchema);
const UserModel = mongoose.model('User', UserSchema);
// user precreation
// UserModel.create({
// name: 'me, myself and I'
// }).then((user) => {
// fs.writeFile(userIdFile, user.id, console.log.bind(null, 'error writing file:'));
// mongoose.connection.close();
// });
// return;
// fetch user
const userId = fs.readFileSync(userIdFile);
let pushedRecipeId; // to test everything went smooth
RecipeModel.create({
title: 'pasta solo'
}).then((recipe) => {
console.log('created recipe:', recipe);
pushedRecipeId = recipe.id;
return UserModel.findOneAndUpdate(
{ _id: userId },
{ $push: { data: recipe.id } },
{ new: true } // forces callback to be passed a fresh object
);
}).then((user) => {
console.log('updated user:', user);
console.log('izok:', !!~user.data.indexOf(pushedRecipeId));
mongoose.connection.close();
}).catch((err) => {
console.log('error', err);
mongoose.connection.close();
})

I don't see what's wrong in your code, but at least you have something to compare with... hope this helps!
I am not a totally new populate user but now I do not know what's wrong.
Here I need to populate my designerId which is type of ObjectId. Take a look at my route.
ordersAdminRouter.route('/customorder/add')
.post(function(req, res){
body = req.body;
console.log(body);
CustomOrders.create(body, function(err, saved){
if (err) throw err;
Designs.findByIdAndUpdate(saved.designId, {$set: {status: 'Order Sent'}}, {new: true}).exec()
.then(function(updated){
return CustomOrders.findById(saved._id).populate(saved.designId).exec();
})
.then(function(orders){
res.json(orders);
})
.then(undefined, function(err){
console.log(err);
})
});
});
saved._id is working because when I remove the populate, it returns the document that I need without the populated document of course.
Take a look at my schema
var mongoose = require('mongoose');
var Schema = mongoose.Schema;
var customOrderSchema = new Schema({
designId: { type: Schema.Types.ObjectId, ref: 'customDesigns' },
size: { type: String },
quantity: { type: Number },
totalPrice: { type: Number },
paymentMode: { type: String },
rcpt_img: { type: String },
refNumber: { type: String }
});
module.exports = mongoose.model('customOrders', customOrderSchema);
Here is my customDesigns schema.
var mongoose = require('mongoose');
var Schema = mongoose.Schema;
var customDesignSchema = new Schema({
item_name: { type: String },
price: { type: Number, default: 0 },
img_url_front: { type: String },
img_url_back: { type: String },
designer: { type: Schema.Types.ObjectId, ref: 'users' },
color: { type: String },
designDate: { type: Date, default: Date.now() },
status: { type: String, default: 'For Qoutation' }
});
module.exports = mongoose.model('customDesigns', customDesignSchema);
I need to admit that I am new to promises on mongoose & express and this is my first time doing so. But using populate, i use it more than I can think of. Any suggestions?
return CustomOrders.findById(saved._id).populate('designId').then(.. your code);
By the way, you dont must use .exec() then you want execute your query, .then executes query as well. You can skip .exec()

I have two Schemas:
var ProgramSchema = new Schema({
active: Boolean,
name: String,
...
});
var UserSchema = new Schema({
username: String,
email: { type: String, lowercase: true },
...
partnerships: [{
program: { type: Schema.Types.ObjectId, ref: 'Program' },
status: { type: Number, default: 0 },
log: [{
status: { type: Number },
time: { type: Date, default: Date.now() },
comment: { type: String },
user: { type: Schema.Types.ObjectId, ref: 'User' }
}]
}]
});
Now I want to get all Program docs, but also append 'status' to each doc, to return if the program is already in a partnership with the logged in user.
My solution looks like this:
Program.find({active: true}, 'name owner image user.payments', function (err, p) {
if(err) { return handleError(res, err); }
})
.sort({_id: -1})
.exec(function(err, programs){
if(err) { return handleError(res, err); }
programs = _.map(programs, function(program){
var partner = _.find(req.user.partnerships, { program: program._id });
var status = 0;
if(partner){
status = partner.status;
}
program['partnership'] = status;
return program;
});
res.json(200, programs);
});
The req.user object contains all information about the logged in user, including the partnerships array.
To get this solution to work, I have to append
partnership: Schema.Types.Mixed
to the ProgramSchema.
This looks a bit messy and thats why I am asking for help. What do you think?
When you want to freely modify the result of a Mongoose query, add lean() to the query chain so that the docs (programs in this case) are plain JavaScript objects instead of Mongoose doc instances.
Program.find({active: true}, 'name owner image user.payments')
.lean() // <= Here
.sort({_id: -1})
.exec(function(err, programs){ ...
Then you can remove partnership from your schema definition. Your query will also execute faster.
