Hive Query result to XL - excel

I am newbie to Hadoop and Hive. My current requirement is to collect the stats of number of records loaded in 15 tables on each run day. Instead of executing each select Count(*) query and copy output manually to XL. Could anyone suggest what is the best method to automate this task please?
Note: we are not having any GUI to run Hive Queries, submitting Hive queries in normal Unix terminal.

Export to the CSV or TSV file, then open file in Excel. Normally it generates TSV file (tab-separated). This is how to transform it to comma-separated if you prefer CSV;

Add more tables to the query.
You can mount directory in which you are writing output file in Windows using SAMBA/NFS. Schedule the command using crontab and voila, every day you have updated file.

AssertionError: assertion failed: No plan for DeleteFromTable In Databricks

Is there any reason this command works well:
%sql SELECT * FROM Azure.Reservations WHERE timestamp > '2021-04-02'
returning 2 rows, while the below:
%sql DELETE FROM Azure.Reservations WHERE timestamp > '2021-04-02'
fails with:
Error in SQL statement: AssertionError: assertion failed: No plan for
DeleteFromTable (timestamp#394 > 1617321600000000)

I'm new to Databricks but I'm sure I ran similar command on another table (without WHERE clause). The table is created basing on a Parquet file.
DELETE FROM (and similarly UPDATE, or MERGE) aren't supported on the Parquet files - right now on Databricks it's supported for Delta format. You can convert your parquet files into delta using CONVERT TO DELTA, and then this command will work for you.
Another alternative is to implement it is to read parquet files, filter out the rows that you want to keep, and overwrite your parquet files.
It could be that you are trying to DELETE from a VIEW (in case it is not a parquet file)
Unfortunately, there is no easy way to differentiate between a VIEW and a TABLE in databricks; the only way you can test if it's indeed a view is by:
SHOW VIEWS FROM Azure like 'reser*'
or, if it's a table:
SHOW TABLES FROM Azure like 'reser*'

How to execute HQL file in pyspark using Hive warehouse connector

I have an hql file. I want to run it using pyspark with Hive warehouse connector. There is an executeQuery method to run queries. I want to know whether hql files can be run like that. Can we run complex queries like that.

I have following solution where i have assumed that there will be multiple queries in hql file.
HQL File : sample_query.hql
select * from schema.table;
select * from schema.table2;
Code : Iterate over each query. You can do as you wish(in terms of HWC operation) in each iteration.

How to do append insertion in sparksql?

I have a api endpoint written by sparksql with the following sample code. Every time api accept a request it will run sparkSession.sql(sql_to_hive) which would create a single file in HDFS. Is there any way to do insert by appending data to existing file in HDFS ? Thanks.

I don't think this is possible case to append data to the existing file.
But you can work around this case by using either of these ways
Approach1
Using Spark, write to intermediate temporary table and then insert overwrite to final table:
existing_df=spark.table("existing_hive_table") //get the current data from hive
current_df //new dataframe
union_df=existing_df.union(current_df)
union_df.write.mode("overwrite").saveAsTable("temp_table") //write the data to temp table
temp_df=spark.table("temp_table") //get data from temp table
temp_df.repartition(<number>).write.mode("overwrite").saveAsTable("existing_hive_table") //overwrite to final table
Approach2:
Hive(not spark) offers overwriting and select same table .i.e
insert overwrite table default.t1 partition(partiton_column)
select * from default.t1; //overwrite and select from same t1 table
If you are following this way then there needs to be hive job triggered once your spark job finishes.
Hive will acquire lock while running overwrite/select the same table so if any job which is writing to table will wait.
In Addition: Orc format will offer alter table concatenate which will merge small ORC files to create a new larger file.
alter table <db_name>.<orc_table_name> [partition_column="val"] concatenate;
We can also use distributeby,sortby clauses to control number of files, refer this and this link for more details.
Another Approach3 is by using hadoop fs -getMerge to merge all small files into one (this method works for text files and i haven't tried for orc,avro ..etc formats).
When you write the resulted dataframe:
result_df = sparkSession.sql(sql_to_hive)
set it’s mode to append:
result_df.write.mode(SaveMode.Append).

Spark returns Empty DataFrame but Populated in Hive

I have a table in hive
db.table_name
When I run the following in hive I get results back
SELECT * FROM db.table_name;
When I run the following in a spark-shell
spark.read.table("db.table_name").show
It shows nothing. Similarly
sql("SELECT * FROM db.table_name").show
Also shows nothing. Selecting arbitrary columns out before the show also displays nothing. Performing a count states the table has 0 rows.
Running the same queries works against other tables in the same database.
Spark Version: 2.2.0.cloudera1
The table is created using
table.write.mode(SaveMode.Overwrite).saveAsTable("db.table_name")
And if I read the file using the parquet files directly it works.
spark.read.parquet(<path-to-files>).show
EDIT:
I'm currently using a workaround by describing the table and getting the location and using spark.read.parquet.
Have you refresh metadata table? Maybe you need to refresh table to access to new data.

I solved the problem by using
query_result.write.mode(SaveMode.Overwrite).format("hive").saveAsTable("table")
which stores the results in textfile.
There is probably some incompatibility with the Hive parquet.
I also found a Cloudera report about it (CDH Release Notes): they recommend creating the Hive table manually and then load data from a temporary table or by query.

Does redeclaring a cursor create new connection while using psycopg2?

I am using the psycopg2 library with Python3 on a linux server to create some temporary tables on Redshift and querying these tables to get results and write to files on the server.
Since my queries are long and takes about 15 minutes to create all these temp tables that I ultimate pull data from, how do I ensure that my connection persists and I don't lose the temp tables that I later query? Right now I just do a cursor() before the execute(), is there a default timeout for these?
I have noticed that whenever I do a
Select a,b from #results_table
or
select * from #results_table
the query just freezes/hangs, but
select top 35 from #results_table
returns the results (select top 40 fails!). There are about a 100 rows in #results_table, and I am not able to get them all. I did a ps aux and the process just stays in the S+ state. If I manually run the query on Redshift it finishes in seconds.
Any ideas?
