Syntax for incrementing not giving expected outcome - excel

I am currently writing a macro for excel and experiencing some issues using the "i = i + 1" code. I have used this elsewhere in my macro and it has worked fine, however for this section it is failing to increment correctly.
As this is quite a large piece of code, I have only included the section which is having issues, however if in order to properly debug this more code is required i am happy to provide this.
I have checked the syntax as has a colleague and we are struggling to find out where the issue is originating from, any help on this would be appreciated.
All declared variables:
D
im lastSite As Range: Set lastSite = wsReport.Range("I2:I1000")
Dim expectedSite As Range: Set expectedSite = wsReport.Range("H2:H1000")
Dim expectedLocation As Range: Set expectedLocation = wsReport.Range("G2:G1000")
Dim lostTOA As Range: Set lostTOA = wsTOAOut.Range("G2:G1000")
Dim lostMissing As Range: Set lostMissing = wsMissing.Range("G2:G1000")
siteCode = wsHome.Range("Q6")
Dim last
Dim expected
Dim lostOut
Dim lostMiss
departments = wsHome.Range("R6:R20")
Working as intended:
Dim iAllocation As Integer
For Each dept In departments
If dept = "" Then
Exit For
End If
wsLBD.Range("A" & rowCounterDepartments).Value = dept
For Each expected In expectedLocation
If expected = dept And Not expected = "" Then
iAllocation = iAllocation + 1
End If
Next
wsLBD.Range("C" & rowCounterDepartments).Value = iAllocation
iAllocation = 0
rowCounterDepartments = rowCounterDepartments + 1
Next
Not Working as intended:
rowCounterDepartments = 2
departmentsOut = wsHome.Range("R6:R20")
Dim iLoss As Integer
Dim iMissing As Integer
For Each lostOut In lostTOA
If lostOut = "" Then
Exit For
End If
For Each deptOut In departmentsOut
If lostOut = deptOut And Not lostOut = "" Then
iLoss = iLoss + 1
End If
Next
wsLBD.Range("B" & rowCounterDepartments).Value = iLoss
iLoss = 0
rowCounterDepartments = rowCounterDepartments + 1
Next
The output expected should be a total count for each department, however it is only outputting a 1 or 0 per line

This has now been resolved, i re-wrote this piece of code and it was a syntax error on my part, a couple of the pieces were the wrong way round.

Unpredictable errors VBA microsoft word copying comments and text to excel

I tried to make a macro that takes all the comments in a word document, filters based on the comment text and then inserts them in excel with the associated text in a note.
I tried each step iteratively and I managed to copy the comments and pasting the wanted results in the same word document. Then I managed to manipulate excel by adding columns and notes.
Everything broke when I integrated the excel part with the comment extraction part. The errors were invalid procedure call for the line with rightParPos = InStr(leftParPos, comment, ")") which I hadn't touched in a while, so I tried outputting the parameters... That lead to a completely different error - an indexing error for the categories array when categoryCount was 0, which also was very strange. After that I tried removing a strange character in a string and then I suddenly got some kind of "can't connect to excel" at Set xlWB = xlApp.Workbooks.Open(FileName:=xlPath).
It seems completely random to me. I'm thinking that it might be some kind of limit or bug in the Microsoft Word environment that is causing these problems. Anyone knowing what could be a cause of these strange errors?
I couldn't find anything out of the ordinary with my code, but maybe someone on S.O. sees something that immediately looks strange. Sorry for the very messy code.

End With
Next categoryIndex
End If
Next commentNr
End Sub
There are two critical problems with the code that were overlooked and then there was one third problem that wasn't due to the code but which also resulted in errors.
As #TimWilliams mentioned, one case where leftParPos = 0 was unhandled.
The indexing of categories was entirely wrong and faulty in the code.
The strangest error was due to having the excel file on an external harddrive that disconnected and therefore making excel not responding.

Wend
what is the error in code? The code is getting stuck after
If Not reqNumDoc.GetFirstItem("PanelResponse") Is Nothing Then
reqPanelResValue = reqNumDoc.GetItemValue("PanelResponse")
Instead of line
While Not reqNumColl Is Nothing
write
While Not reqNumDoc Is Nothing
You got an infinitive loop because the collection reqNumColl is not nothing all the time even when you reached the last document in collection. Instead you have to test the document reqNumDoc.
Another issue might be your code for collection calculation:
reqNumStr = {PS_RequestNo = "} & reqNum & {"}
Set reqNumColl = vwSearchRequests.GetAllDocumentsByKey(reqNumStr)
The way you coded it the first sorted column in view should contain
PS_RequestNo = "12345"
Probably, your view contains in first sorted column just the request number. If so, your code would be just:
Set reqNumColl = vwSearchRequests.GetAllDocumentsByKey(reqNum)
if column contains a numeric value or
Set reqNumColl = vwSearchRequests.GetAllDocumentsByKey(cStr(reqNum))
if it contains a string.
Apart from any other problems you might have in your code (and #Knut is correct about the cause of your infinite loop), this is not a good pattern:
If Not reqNumDoc.GetFirstItem("PanelResponse") Is Nothing Then
reqPanelResValue = reqNumDoc.GetItemValue("PanelResponse")
You're retrieving the item twice when you don't actually have to.
This woould be much better:
If reqNumDoc.HasItem"PanelResponse") Then
reqPanelResValue = reqNumDoc.GetItemValue("PanelResponse")

Excel VB Scripting Error Handling - "object variable or with block not set" Error

I'm having some trouble with a macro for Excel. The snippet that's giving me trouble is responsible for:
1) allowing the user to select multiple column headers, one by one
2) taking the contents of each columns, in the order of header selection, and concatenating
Here's the code:
Dim concat1() As Range
Dim rng As Variant
Dim i As Variant
Dim g As Integer
Dim metalabels() As String
Dim concated As String
Dim s As Variant
lastrow = Cells(rows.Count, "A").End(xlUp).Row
i = 0
msgselect = MsgBox("Would you like to concatonate?", vbOKCancel)
On Error GoTo Errhandler
If msgselect = vbOK Then
Do
ReDim Preserve concat1(i)
Set concat1(i) = Application.InputBox("Select the headers you would like to concatonate", Default:=ActiveCell.Address, Type:=8)
msgselect = MsgBox("Another cell?", vbOKCancel)
i = i + 1
Loop While msgselect = vbOK
i = i - 1
Errhandler:
End If
ReDim metalabels(i)
For g = 0 To i
metalabels(g) = concat1(g).Text
Next
ActiveSheet.Range("a1").End(xlToRight).Offset(0, 1).Select
ActiveCell = "Situation"
For h = 1 To lastrow - 1
For g = 0 To UBound(metalabels)
concated = concated + metalabels(g) + ": " + concat1(g).Offset(h, 0).Text + " / "
Next
ActiveCell.Offset(h, 0).Value = concated
concated = ""
Next
End Sub
The problem is here:
Set concat1(i) = Application.InputBox("Select the headers you would like to concatonate", Default:=ActiveCell.Address, Type:=8)
If the user selects "Cancel," the code crashes since the loop depends on vbOK. So, I thought I'd put in an error handler, but, as it is, I get the "object variable or with block not set" error.
As you might sense, I'm still a nube with VB. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Place this after your End IF
If concat1(i) Is Nothing Then Exit Sub
Did you try adding if concat1(i) = false then exit sub before incrementing i?

Difficult to debug without the source files.
I see the following potential problems:
GetRowRange: .UsedRange might return more columns than you expect. Check by pressing Ctrl-End in the worksheet and see where you end up
Some thing in your main routine - depsheet.UsedRange.Columns(1).Cells might just result in much more rows than expected
someRange.Value = "VLOOKUP(... will store the formula as text. You need .Formula = instead of .Value (this will not solve your long runtime but certainly avoid another bug)
In sortSpgs you add know or unknow items to a control. Not knowing if there's any event code behind these controls, disable events with Application.EnableEvents=False (ideally in the beginning of your main sub together with the .ScreenUpdating = False)
Also, set Application.Calculation = xlCalculationManual at the beginning and Application.Calculation = xlCalculationAutomatic at the end of your code
You're performing a lot of .Find - esp. in sortSpgs - this is potentially slow in large sheets, as it has to loop over quite some data, depending on the underlying range.
Generally, a few more "best practise remarks":
* Dim your variables with the correct types, same for returns of functions
* Use With obj to make the code cleaner. E.g. in setResulcolVars you could use With rsheet.UsedRange and remove this part in the following 15 or so lines
* In modules of small scope, it is okay to dim some variable with a module wide scope - esp. if you hand them over with every call. This will make your code much easier to read
Hope that helps a bit... mvh /P.
My guess is that Application.Screenupdating is the problem. You set to false inside the:
if Not (importsheet.UsedRange.Find("afdeling") Is Nothing) Then
block. So if the isn't the case then screenupdateing isn't disabled. you should move it to the beginning of the function.
you could also try to write the usedrange in an array, work with it , and write it back if needed.
code example
dim MyArr() as Variant
redim MyArray (1 to usedrange.rows.count, 1 to usedrange.columns)
MyArray=usedrange.value
'calculating with Myarray instead of ranges (faster)
usedrange.value=myarray 'writes changes back to the sheet/range
also, maybe you can use .match instead of .find, wich is faster.
with arrays you use application.match( SearchValue, Array_Name, False) 'false if for exact match
the same thing works for range.find() , becoming application.find()...
save first your master workbook under a new name before making such a big change...

Compile Error: Object Required VBA

I'm new to VBA. I'm trying to write a script that cleans up some data from an experiment. I keep getting an error saying "Object Required" and it highlights pold. Does anyone have any idea why?
As for the script, I'm trying to go down a column of participant numbers and map out what range each participant is in. There are around 30 lines per participant, and I want to define that as values in an array.
Sub Cleanthismofoup()
Dim pranges(1 To 50) As Long
Dim pbegin As Range
Dim pend As Range
Dim pold As Integer
Dim pnew As Integer
Dim pcell As Range
Dim pcounter As Long
Dim i As Long
Set pcell = Range("A1:A1")
Set pbegin = Range("A2:A2")
Set pold = Range("B2:B2").Value
pcounter = 0
'for every item, store value in pnew
' move down one line. Check pnew = pold
' if it is, do again. else create new range
For i = 1 To rngl
pcell = pcell.Offset(-1, 0)
pnew = pcell.Cells.Value
If pnnew <> pold Then pcell = pend
If pcell = pend Then
counter = counter + 1
pranges(counter) = pbegin
counter = counter + 1
pranges(counter) = pend
pbegin = pcell.Offset(-1, 0)
Else: pold = pnew
End If
i = i + 1
Next
End Sub
The error is because you are using a Set keyword which is used to assign reference to the object. Since the output on the RHS of Set pold = Range("B2:B2").Value is an Integer, vba gives you an error. To resolve it simply remove the Set keyword. However I also noticed that you are using rng1 in the for loop without initializing the rng1 variable, in which case your for loop will never execute. You might also want to rectify that.
