So yesterday I was fine, however, starting this morning, I'm trying to log into my laptop and hit a very strange error.
Windows 10
HP Elitebook laptop.
Fresh startup from power off state.
Windows starts up just fine, but once I try to type anything (ie notepad, login prompt, etc, )
I get what I type, then about .5s later, I also get thirteen "3"s:
ie: 3333333333333
Doesn't matter what I type ... space, enter, shift, a, l ... any key .. results in thirteen "3"s following it.
If I use the on screen keyboard via Ease of Access, it "works fine" .. so I can type via that and not get the extra characters.
I've tapped and fiddled with the 3 key, it doesn't appear stuck.
Anyone got any crazy ideas? :)
[edit]
just to clarify what I meant by the .5s delay ...
if I quickly type: "test" ...
the result is:
test3333333333333
so funny enough, not repeated x4 (ie only 13, not 52, 3's)
[/edit]
[edit2]
can't get into safe mode .. tried a few different things, unable to get to it.
I did manage to get into the base cmos menu ...
and the 3's showing up there as well .. so that kind of confirms it's hardware, and not windows, doesn't it?
[/edit2]
Based on my past experience, this is almost always a problem with the keyboard hardware. Most likely the switch in the key itself, which can stick even if the keycap itself doesn't.
While it is possible this is a software or a motherboard problem, I'd try booting to SAFE mode and see if the problem persists. If it does, your next step is to try to replace the keyboard or have it replaced.

Is there a way to reset keyboard layouts in general in Windows 10?
I messed up using Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator some time ago, and I'm not able to fix it.
This is NOT something that can be fixed through anything in Language preferences, btw.
Last year, I was stupid enough to try to fix my keyboards on a "lower level".
I use the Norwegian and Korean keyboard a lot, sometimes also Japanese and Canadian French.
I have a hard time using symbols, like ";" - "'" - "~" etc, since these are placed differently on the various keyboards.
I looked for a solution, and found "Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator". I tried to fix the keyboards, but it didn't work that well since it had problems with the Korean keyboard. I thus tried to change the Norwegian keyboard somewhat, so that I would be able to write more efficiently, without always checking what keyboard I was using (the Korean one also has the American one ingrained, with a simple push of Alt-Gr).
I also have tried to make a shortcut to go from Norwegian to Korean and back seamlessly, without scrolling through other keyboards as well (Win+Shift scrolls through all available ones).
I don't remember exactly what I did, but it didn't really work out, so I thought I deleted the customized keyboards, and went back to the regular ones.
But there was a problem: one of the keys, VK_OEM_3, the one to the left of "L" to be exact, (";" on a regular US kezboard) no longer worked in Norwegian when used in a regular way. At first, it changed keyboard every time I used it to write regularly. I had set it up to do this when pushed WITH another key (probably AltGr), but something was not right.
I managed to delete the customized keyboards, deleted and reinstalled the Norwegian keyboard from Microsoft, but lo and behold, the key no longer worked. I.e, it works when I push it down for a long time, maybe half a second, and then I get a lot of "øøøø". When using TeamViewer, it dosn't even help to hold the key in for a long time. And the digital keyboard certainly does not work.
I have tried to download other keyboards, and the key works well for A-Z and symbols that exist on a US keyboard.
Thus, the French keyboard, where it is an "M", works well. As does US and Korean keyboard layouts where it is an ";".
But it works as badly for Danish layout, where it is an "Æ" or German layout, where it is an "Ö". Both of these layouts were downloaded for the first time after I had messed up.
I have tried kbdEdit, that made me end up with a German keyboard layout I had a hard time to get rid of, even though I deleted it multiple times from "Langauge preferences".
I haven't learned kbdEdit well though, so it might work out.
But I'm afraid that it might not work, and that I
But what has happened here? I used a Microsoft program, and thought that would be safe enough, even though I was warned it might not work, since it's old. But messing up one key completely...
I have deleted all the new keyboards from the Registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Keyboard Layouts), btw. But it's apparently on a lower level than this, since there are problems with all kinds of keyboards that have "extended Latin" letters on that place.)
What I wonder, is if there is a file that can be replaced with a standard file. I don't really want to reinstall Windows and my hundreds of programs, but I can hardly work in Norwegian the way things are now.
I have to check the phrases for eventual missing "ø", and when I remember the problem, it stops my flow since I have to push down for a long time and then delete the extra "øøø"s.
I finally managed to fix the problem:
Under registry keys, in my case in multiple locations, there is a map called SYSTEM\KeyboardLayout\Substitutes.
I deleted everything but the default one in all of these, and now it works!
When I open Logisim on my Windows 10 device, the task bar options are all clumped together and difficult to read(Screenshot tagged in the post). But looks fine on mac.

Any help would be great.
Try pressing Windows Key + Up key.
Another possible solution is to hit the Windows button. This tends to bring up the task bar in most programs, for me, at least.
This may seem off topic, but I'd create a manifest file for this particular program if it occurs only there. That may solve the problem if done correctly.
This is more of a computer question than a programming question and it I am posting in the wrong place, please let me know. My system is running Windows 8, 64bit. Regardless of which browser I use - IE or Chrome, every time I attempt to type something into a text field, the screen refreshes. I have also noticed that the refresh symbol starts to flash. I can get that to stop by pressing the ESC key, but then the screen goes blank. I have done a complete scan of my computer and found no viruses. Any ideas would be great appreciated as this is making things very difficult, including typing this message.
I uninstalled and reinstalled and that seemed to fix the problem.
I have a crazy problem on CentOS.
I was doing some editing in emacs when I accidentally hit some keys. Next thing I know, none of my regular keystrokes work.
I wasn't able to close emacs no matter what I tried (mouse on X doesn't work either).
I logged in from another PC and killed the emacs process.
However, this still doesn't fix the problem. Now, when I click my desktop shortcut, I can open another konsole, however, I can't type anything into that console!
When I click on the X to close it, I get this black hand, not the regular arrow.
Further, hitting enter doesn't do anything, and any keystrokes I type don't show up in the terminal.
However, if I type s, the Search heading on the terminal window drops down.
Does anybody know how to get out of this weird mode so I can use my PC again?
EDIT: More information. I think my linux is stuck in something similar to Windows ALT mode. For instance, in Windows, when you hit ALT, followed by F, the File menu will drop down. On my PC, when I hit F, the File menu immediately comes down on the active terminal. However, I cannot for the life of me get out of this mode. Been stuck for over an hour now!!
Hitting the ALT key may have solved the problem. I'm not sure if that was what ended up fixing it, but after I hit the ALT key a bunch of times, I got the VNC display to work properly again.
Business as usual: I've logged into my Linux machine from my MacBook Pro using NX, opened a terminal, and ... key bindings with M- (Meta-) do not work. (Talking about bash, of course.) Wait for it. I'm using a PC keyboard hooked up to my Mac (I cannot work on a cramped laptop keyboard). So I decided to investigate: used xev to capture events. When I press left 'Alt' on the PC keyboard, 'xev' reports that 'Meta_L' got depressed. Problem is, it seems that it gets ignored for some reason (no idea why).
It is really annoying, because the same is true for Eclipse. Practically all key bindings with Alt- in them are gone.
My hunch would be to use xmodmap to force the left Alt key to actually emit 'Alt_L', but I wanted to hear a second opinion.
It turns out, the problem was that, according to 'xmodmap -pm', Meta_L and Meta_R were not in Mod1 special modifier category. When I moved them there, everything started to work. (Turns out, some programs assume, incorrectly, that 'Mod1' is Meta/Alt, and ignore keysyms like Meta_L.)
