What is the file named "setup.zst.sig" during installation? - cygwin

I note that when cygwin's setup.exe installs packages now, it looks for a file named "setup.zst.sig" first. What's the content and format of this binary file? How to produce a valid "setup.zst.sig"?
This must have been a recent change. Previously it looked for "setup.exe.sig" first. I use the feature (to detect whether "setup.exe.sig" changed) to decide whether my cygwin installation needs to be updated. See also this for an application example.

setup.zst.sig is not yet used.
The "zst" functionality was introduced in the program to eventually replace the
previous compression methods of setup.ini and the packages

According to the documentation, the .sig files carry a SHA-512 hash of the respective file without that extension, signed with the private key available only to Cygwin the company.

autogenerating ".uuid" files in linux directory

OS - Debian Stable
I downloaded fonts from a website (that seemed legitimate to me) and transferred the contents to /usr/share/fonts/directory. There's a .uuid file being generated for every directory with a string like this as its sole content:
f25e9432-c6f1-4bbe-a33c-89289a8d17f1
This file regenerates right after I delete it. Is this a malicious program? Is this indexing by the OS itself or is it something like fc-cache running in the background? What could be the cause of this?
This has nothing to do with the fact that you've downloaded your own fonts. This is simply just fontconfigdoing it's job. It very well could just be the cached data created. Only rather, the binary data is being converted into a uuid string/unique ID.
So, I would say no. I do not believe this to be the cause of anything malicious. Nor are any of these occurrences a result from you downloading fonts from your web browser.

RPM verification error what is mean by P

I have created an RPM and that installs successfully. After installing, when I tried to verify the RPM with --verify command I am getting an error on executable file X it returns as
...P /location/to/file/X
I don't know what is mean P. The file has a special capability to listen the ports set by setcap. Can you please tell me what is mean by P? I have searched through Google but did't get any luck. Thanks in advance
As explained (albeit briefly) in the rpm man page:
rpm {-V|--verify} [select-options] [verify-options]
Verifying a package compares information about the installed files in the package with information about the files taken from the package metadata stored in the rpm database. Among other things, verifying compares the size, digest, permissions, type, owner and group of each file. Any discrepancies are displayed. Files that were not installed from the package, for example, documentation files excluded on installation using the "--excludedocs" option, will be silently ignored.
The format of the output is a string of 8 characters, a possible attribute marker:

from the package header, followed by the file name. Each of the 8 characters denotes the result of a comparison of attribute(s) of the file to the value of those attribute(s) recorded in the database. A single "." (period) means the test passed, while a single "?" (question mark) indicates the test could not be performed (e.g. file permissions prevent reading). Otherwise, the (mnemonically emBoldened) character denotes failure of the corresponding --verify test:

So the capability of the file in question differs on disk from the capabilities of the file as listed in the rpm files section. How it differs is up to you to find out (and possibly fix).

Windows mobile 6.5 - best way to read and write from and to a config file

I have a handheld device running WM6.5 and trying to put together an application that should prompt the user for some information (login, password) and save it to a file for later use.
Have tried app.config files but unfortunately it requires System::Configuration, I can add the DLL but can't get the code to run, it requires CRL or something like that which I can't configure this being a mobile app - the required option is missing from the project/solution configuration section.
I am using Visual Studio 2008 C++
What's the best way to make this happen? Precisely, 1) write a string somewhere and 2) read it back later on.

I have tried using a binary file, like this

What happens is it adds some garbage at the end of the string, if the string is longer less garbage, otherwise more.
Is there a way to sort out this conversion issue?
Turns out, project was using Unicode and had to use wifstream and wofstream to be able to properly read the strings, rather than attempt to convert them from ANSI to unicode.
This should be a reminder for me to stay away from strong typed languages in the future. Too bad there's no other significant choice for Windows Mobile. Spent a bunch of hours on this, I could have used that time for something else.

Where/How to save a preferences file in a *nix command line utility?

I am writing a small command line utility. It should hopefully be able to run on OSX, UNIX and Linux.
It needs to save a few preferences somewhere, like in a small YAML config file.
Where would one save such a file?

OS: *nix
Commonly, these files go somewhere like ~/.rc (eg: ~/.hgrc). This could be the path to a file, or to a directory if you need lots of configuration settings.

I would avoid putting the file in the ~ directory only because it has gotten totally flooded with crap. The recent trend, at least on ubuntu, is to use ~/.config/<appname>/ for whatever dot files you need. I really like that convention.
If your application is named "someapp" you save the configuration in a file such as $HOME/.someapp. You can give the config file an extension if you like. If you think your app may have more than one config file you can use the directory $HOME/.someapp and create regular-named (not hidden) files in there.
Many cross-platform tools use the same path on OS X as on linux (and other POSIX/non-Windows platforms). The main advantage of using the POSIX locations isn't saving a few lines of code, but saving the need for Mac-specific instructions, and allowing Mac users to get help from the linux users in the community (without any need to translate their suggestions).
The other alternative is to put them in the "Mac-friendly" locations under ~/Library instead. The main advantage of using the Mac locations is basically "Apple says so"—unless you plan to sandbox your code, in which case the main advantage is that you can do so.
If you choose to use the Library locations, you should read About the OS X File System and OS X Library Directory Details in the File System Programming Guide, but here's the short version:
Almost everything: Create a subdirectory with your app's name or bundle ID (unless you're going out of your way to set a bundle ID, you'll get org.python.python, which you don't want…) under ~/Library/Application Support. Ideally you should use APIs like -[NSFileManager URLForDirectory:inDomain:appropriateForURL:create:error:] to get the path; if not, you have to deal with things like localization, sandbox containers, etc. manually.
Anything that can be easily re-created (so it doesn't need to be backed up, migrated, etc.): An identically-named subdirectory of ~/Library/Caches.
Preferences: Use the NSUserDefaults or CFPreferences APIs instead. If you use your own format, the "old" way of doing things is to create a subdirectory under ~/Library/Preferences named with your app's name or bundle ID, and put your files in that. Apple no longer recommends that, but doesn't really recommend an alternative (short of "use CFPreferences, damnit!"); many apps (e.g., Aquamacs) still do it the old way, but others instead pretend they're not preferences and store them under Application Support.

Return value of c# exe with exec

i have a problem using inno setup. I'm installing an update with inno, and with the update.exe the user get a txtfile with a licencenumber. On his Unit this licencenumber readable by a dll function.
Before the installingprocess i have to compare these numbers. Only if this numbers are identical the user is trying to installing the update on the right machine with the right licence.
If i would put this check into an seperate exe, it would be easy to crack it by change the exe with one just doing nothing (no errorcode). So i want to split the checking into the seperated exe (where i check some other things like installed version number etc.) and the update.exe
In update exe, i want to read the txtfile inside the updatepackage - this is easy.
In check.exe i want to call the internal dll and get the licencenumber of the machine. I have to return this number as an int. C# allows me to do that.
But how can i get this number in innosetup?
I tried to take the errorcode for this (0=error - not right version etc, XXXXXXXXX = licencenumber of machine). But the errorcode is just 2 chars in inno. I get only 2 chars...
Saving the number in another file would'nt be a solution cause the user can crack it this way... Is it possible to get the number into inno without giving the user the chance to manilpulate??
If you move the code into a DLL (either COM or a plain stdcall DLL) then it can be used by Inno and pass extra data between them including full strings, etc.
