I have a shell script that runs a docker container on a remote server.
I'm trying to send the hostname of the remote server into the container but i just get the hostname of my local computer where i run the script.
The command looks like this in the script:
ssh $remote "docker run -h '`hostname`' \
-e 'VARIABLE=$SCRIPT_VAR' \
-e 'HOST_HOSTNAME=`hostname`' \
..."
Both hostname and the environment variable host.hostname becomes the name of my local computer.
I know I can use singlequotes like this:
ssh $remote 'echo "`hostname`"'
and it will work. But then i cannot use scriptvariables like the $SCRIPT_VAR
How can i get it to evaluate on the remote server instead while also being able to use variables?
You still need to ensure that the expansion of $SCRIPT_VAR is quoted to prevent it from being subjected to word splitting or pathname expansion.
ssh $remote 'docker run -h "$(hostname)" \
-e "VARIABLE='"$SCRIPT_VAR"'" \
-e "HOST_HOSTNAME=$(hostname)" \
...'

I am creating a yaml file in GitHub Actions to install softwares on Linux servers created using terraform. Using the pipeline i am able to ssh into the linux servers. In one of the servers i am creating a .ssh directory and an id_rsa file (which contains the private key of the other server) which i intend to use to scp into the other server to copy some files. I have used the echo command to copy the private key to id_rsa file. I want to view the content of id_rsa to make sure the correct private key is copied. I am using the cat command but it does not work. here is my code
ssh chefnode -T
ssh chefnode -t 'sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y'
ssh chefnode -t 'echo "$INFRA_PRIVATE_KEY" > "/home/'$SSH_NODE_USER'/.ssh/id_rsa"'
ssh chefnode -t 'cat "/home/'$SSH_NODE_USER'/.ssh/id_rsa"'
the commands run but the cat command does not return any output. It does not fail. the pipeline passes but this command does not render any output. I have tried the following combinations as well but nothing works
ssh chefnode -t 'cat /home/"$SSH_NODE_USER"/.ssh/id_rsa'
ssh chefnode -t 'cat /home/$SSH_NODE_USER/.ssh/id_rsa'
ssh chefnode -t cat /home/'$SSH_NODE_USER'/.ssh/id_rsa
ssh chefnode -t cat /home/$SSH_NODE_USER/.ssh/id_rsa
I tried this too
ssh chefnode -t 'echo "$INFRA_PRIVATE_KEY" > "/home/'$SSH_NODE_USER'/.ssh/id_rsa"'
ssh chefnode -t 'cd "/home/'$SSH_NODE_USER'/.ssh";"cat id_rsa"'
says cat command not found. I just want to view the contents of id_rsa file, not sure what i am doing wrong.
ssh chefnode -t 'echo "$INFRA_PRIVATE_KEY" > "/home/'$SSH_NODE_USER'/.ssh/id_rsa"'
Unless $INFRA_PRIVATE_KEY is a variable set by the login environment on chefnode, this is likely to be empty.
I assume you wanted to send a variable set on the local console, but as written this literally sends "$INFRA_PRIVATE_KEY" to the server which probably expands to nothing (i.e. the file is actually empty).
you probably instead want something like:
ssh chefnode -t 'echo "'"$INFRA_PRIVATE_KEY"'" > "/home/'$SSH_NODE_USER'/.ssh/id_rsa"'
which locally expands the variable and then sends it with quoting (assuming there are no quotes embedded in the variable value itself)
First: I have searched the forum and also went through documentation, but still cannot get it right.
So, I have a docker command I want to run on a remote server, from my bash script. I want to pass an environment variable – on the local machine running the script – to the remote server. Furthermore, I need a response from the remote command.
Here is what I actually am trying to do and what I need: the script is a tiny wrapper around our Traefik/Docker/Elixir/Phoenix app setup to be able to connect easily to the running Elixir application, inside the Erlang observer. With the script, the steps would be:
ssh into the remote machine
docker ps to see all running containers, since in our blue/green deploy the active one changes name
docker exec into the correct container
execute a command inside the docker container to connect to the running Elixir application
The command I am using now is:
CONTAINER=$(ssh -q $USER#$IP 'sudo docker ps --format "{{.Names}}" | grep ""$APP_NAME"" | head -n 1')
The main problem is the part with the grep and the ENV var... It is empty, and does not get replaced. It makes sence, since that var does not exist on the remote machine, it does on my local machine. I tried single quotes, $(), ... Either it just does not work, or the solutions I find online execute the command but then I have no way of getting the container name, which I need for the subsequent command:
ssh -o 'RequestTTY force' $USER#$IP "sudo docker exec -i -t $CONTAINER /bin/bash -c './bin/app remote'"
Thanks for your input!
First, are you sure you need to call sudo docker stop? as stopping the containers did not seem to be part of the workflow you mentioned. [edit: not applicable anymore]
Basically, you use a double-double-quote, grep ""$APP_NAME"", but it seems this variable is not substituted (as the whole command 'sudo docker ps …' is singled-quoted); according to your question, this variable is available locally, but not on the remote machine, so you may try writing:
CONTAINER=$(ssh -q $USER#$IP 'f() { sudo docker ps --format "{{.Names}}" | grep "$1" | head -n 1; }; f "'"$APP_NAME"'"')
You can try this single command :
ssh -t $USER#$IP "docker exec -it \$(docker ps -a -q --filter Name=/$APP_NAME) bash -c './bin/app remote'"
You will need to redirect the command with the local environmental variable (APP_NAME) into the ssh command using <<< and so:
CONTAINER=$(ssh -q $USER#$IP <<< 'sudo docker ps --format "{{.Names}}" | grep "$APP_NAME" | head -n 1 | xargs -I{} sudo docker stop {}')
Hi I am writing a auto script in test.sh , attempting to download a file. It works fine when I use all hard code string. But it does not work with variables. Belong are my code example:
#!/bin/bash
USER="admin"
PWD="adminpass"
curl -v -k -u ${USER}:${PWD} ${NEXUS_URL}/${SP1}/60/${SP1}-60.zip --output ${SP1}-60.zip
Above code not working not able to download my file, but if I put it as :
curl -v -k -u "admin":"adminpass" ${NEXUS_URL}/${SP1}/60/${SP1}-60.zip
--output ${SP1}-60.zip
Then it works. So how do I get the variable credential working with this curl command?
Thanks
Option 1
The parameter expansion will not include the double quotes. You can use:
#!/bin/bash
USER='"'admin'"' #single quote, double quote, single quote
PASS='"'adminpass'"'
curl -v -k -u ${USER}:${PASS} ${NEXUS_URL}/${SP1}/60/${SP1}-60.zip
Option 2
Alternatively, you can create a .netrc file and use curl -n as follows:
Documentation from https://ec.haxx.se/usingcurl-netrc.html
Create .netrc containing the following and place it in your home directory.
machine http://something.com
login admin
password adminpass
Run the command
curl -n -k --output ${SP1}-60.zip
curl will automatically look for the .netrc file. You can also specify the file path with curl --netrc-file <netrc_file_path>
I use shell script to run R program as following:
host_list="server#com" Directory="/home/program/" ssh -f "$host_list" 'cd $Directory && nohup Rscript L_1.R> L_1_sh.txt'
But it always says
Directory: Undefined variable.
SSH does not propagate all your environment variables. You're only setting on the environment of the local client ssh program, not on the server side. As a hack, just stick it inside the commands that ssh is running remotely, instead of the pre-command environment setup.
host_list="server#com" ssh -f "$host_list" 'Directory="/home/program/"; cd "$Directory" && nohup ...'
Here's a simpler version of the command that will let you test it without depending on your particular program setup.
ssh localhost Dir="/etc"; echo Dir is "$Dir"; cd "$Dir" && pwd && ps
I'm not sure but maybe you can try those:
In bash single quotes '' does not repace variables Manual
Try to use ${Directory} or change the variable name (maybe is
reserved)
I have opened a remote ssh session from a script and on remote server there is a file containing version information.
I am trying to assign that version to variable and move current version contents to folder name same as version.
The main script is running in jenkins
I am doing something like this
ssh -i /home/user/.ssh/id_rsa -t -t remoteServer<<EOF
cd $WEB_DIR
VERSION=$(cat $WEB_DIR/version.info)
mv -f $WEB_DIR $BACKUP_DIR/$VERSION
exit
EOF
My VERSION variable is always empty. When I run same locally on that server it gives me version value. Something is different over remote ssh session within a script
Actually I found the way to do it in 2 steps.
$WEB_DIR is set as local variable set in main script.
$WEB_DIR="/usr/local/tomcat/webapps/ROOT"
OLD_VERSION=$(ssh -i /home/user/.ssh/id_rsa -tt user#remoteServer "cat $WEB_DIR/version.info")
ssh -i /home/user/.ssh/id_rsa -t -t user#remoteServer<<EOF
cd $WEB_DIR
mv -f $WEB_DIR $BACKUP_DIR/$OLD_VERSION
# I am executing more commands in here
exit
EOF
Use of double quotes "" in first command is must if want to use local variable.
