VBA - Set range by matching column and row values - excel

I am quite new to VBA and after lots of searching I haven't been able to find any help to the following problem.
I have a fairly large and complex table containing a lot of data. The data within the table has been conditional formatted to have different color fills. Using the following code, I am able to count the number of cells of a certain color within each range.
However I am looking to replace the range with for example something along the lines of; IF column C value matches "Apples" AND IF row 3 value matches "Farm A" THEN count green fills within this area.
The code I am using so far is below.
Dim rng As Range
Dim lColorCounter As Long
Dim rngCell As Range
Sheets("Matrix").Select
Set rng = Sheet1.Range("F140:O150")
For Each rngCell In rng
If Cells(rngCell.Row, rngCell.Column).DisplayFormat.Interior.Color = RGB(185, 255, 185) Then
lColorCounter = lColorCounter + 1
End If
Next
Sheets("Summary").Activate
Sheet3.Range("C4") = lColorCounter
lColorCounter = 0
Hope this makes sense and any help will really be appreciated. Thank you!

As discussed in comments, this has a dynamic row loop (check for value of Apples) and a dynamic column loop (check for color of cells).
The range of the 2nd loop is determined by the size of your merged cell ("Farm A") which starts in cell C2. So if you change your Farm A merged cell to span 20 columns, the loop will expand to those 20 columns.
Option Explicit
Sub test()
Dim i As Long, FarmA As Integer, MyCell As Range, lColorCounter As Long
Dim Matrix As Worksheet: Set Matrix = ThisWorkbook.Sheets("Matrix")
Application.ScreenUpdating = False
With Matrix
FarmA = .Range("C2").CurrentRegion.Count + 2 'Determine size of merged cell "FarmA"
For i = 3 To .Range("B" & .Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Row 'Loop through used rows in Col B
If .Range("B" & i) = "Apples" Then 'If condition is met, move to next line, else, check next row
For Each MyCell In .Range(.Cells(i, 3), .Cells(i, FarmA)) 'set serach range
If MyCell.DisplayFormat.Interior.Color = RGB(185, 255, 185) Then 'search for format
lColorCounter = lColorCounter + 1
End If
Next MyCell
End If
Next i
End With
Application.ScreenUpdating = True
MsgBox lColorCounter
End Sub

Copying Cell Value On The Same Row Based On Another Column Cell Color

I am trying to be able to search through a list in Column W and any cell in Column W that is highlighted Yellow to Copy Cell from Column B from the same row as colored cell in Column W.
This is what I have so far:
Sub CopyData()
Dim YellowField As Range
Dim YellowCell As Range
Dim Amortized As Worksheet
Dim Rollforward As Worksheet
Set Amortized = Worksheets("AMORTIZED")
Set Rollforward = Worksheets("Rollforward")
Set YellowField = Amortized.Range("W4", Amortized.Range("W4").End(xlDown))
For i = 4 To YellowField.UsedRange.Rows.Count
For Each YellowCell In YellowField
If YellowCell.Interior.Color = vbYellow Then
x = Amortized.Cells(i, ColumnD).Value
x.Copy Destination:= _
Rollforward.Range("B30").Offset(Rollforward.Rows.Count - 1, 0).End(xlUp).Offset(1, 0)
Exit For
End If
Next YellowCell
Exit For
Next i
End Sub
Currently when I run I get Error 439 on this line.
x = Amortized.Cells(i, ColumnD).Value
I was using .color and switched to .value because I feel it would assume if column D was colored I could be wrong though. Plus I feel I am still missing the loop here where the list would continue to be scanned for more colored cells in Column W
ColumnD is being read as a Variant it does not mean Column D Use 4 instead.
The inner loop is not needed and will give you a lot of false positive copies.
And to copy X you need to make it a Range and Set it. But in this case just use the cell itself.
Sub CopyData()
Dim LstRow As Long
Dim Amortized As Worksheet
Dim Rollforward As Worksheet
Set Amortized = Worksheets("AMORTIZED")
Set Rollforward = Worksheets("Rollforward")
LstRow = Amortized.Cells(Amortized.Rows.Count,23).End(xlUp).Row
For i = 4 To lstrow
If Amortized.Cells(i,23).Interior.Color = vbYellow Then
Amortized.Cells(i, 4).Copy Destination:= _
Rollforward.Cells(Rollforward.Rows.Count,2).End(xlUp).Offset(1,0)
End If
Next i
End Sub

Is there a better way to get the value of the first cell that is centered across selection for the current cell?

Given that I am told we should be using Centered Across Selection instead of Merged Cells, I need to get the underlying value that is displayed across the cells when formatted as Centered Across Selection.
When using Merged Cells, it was easy:
CellValue = rng.MergeArea.Cells(1, 1).Value
Is there an easy way to get the same for Centered Across Selection, other than searching backwards while HorizontalAlignment = xlHAlignCenterAcrossSelection until the Cell Value <> "". My code to do this would be:
Function GetCenteredAcrossSelectionCellValue(rng As Range) As Variant
Dim i As Long
Dim l As Long
Dim ws As Worksheet
Set ws = rng.Worksheet
i = rng.Column
r = rng.Row
If rng.HorizontalAlignment = xlHAlignCenterAcrossSelection Then
Do Until (ws.Cells(r, i).Value <> "" And rng.HorizontalAlignment = xlHAlignCenterAcrossSelection)
i = i - 1
Loop
End If
GetCenteredAcrossSelectionCellValue = ws.Cells(r, i).Value
End Function
However, I don't this this is foolproof, because it could be possible that someone applied Center Across Selection to a single cell (say A1 for example) with a value, and then applied Center Across Selection to 3 empty cells (B1:D1). When asked for the "value" for D1, the above code would return the value in A1.
Excel must know because it formats correctly, so is there an easy way to tell in VBA, similar to the way we can tell for Merged Cells?
Following on from the comment above...
Apply "center across selection" to A1:J1 then run tester with values in different cells in that range and compare the outputs.
Sub tester()
Dim c As Range, rng As Range
For Each c In Range("A1:J1")
Set rng = CenteredRange(c)
If Not rng Is Nothing Then
Debug.Print c.Address, rng.Address
Else
Debug.Print c.Address, "not centered"
End If
Next c
End Sub
'return the current "center across" range given a starting point
Function CenteredRange(c As Range) As Range
Dim cStart As Range, cEnd As Range, cNext As Range
Set c = c.Cells(1) 'make sure we're dealing with a single cell
If Not c.HorizontalAlignment = xlCenterAcrossSelection Then Exit Function
Set cStart = c.Parent.Range(c.Address)
Set cEnd = c.Parent.Range(c.Address)
'look for the beginning
Do While cStart.Column > 1 And cStart.HorizontalAlignment = xlCenterAcrossSelection
If Len(cStart.Value) > 0 Then Exit Do 'stop if find a value
Set cStart = cStart.Offset(0, -1)
Loop
'look for the end
Do While cEnd.Column < Columns.Count - 1 And cEnd.HorizontalAlignment = xlCenterAcrossSelection
Set cNext = cEnd.Offset(0, 1) 'checking the next cell...
If Len(cNext.Value) > 0 Or cNext.HorizontalAlignment <> xlCenterAcrossSelection Then Exit Do
Set cEnd = cEnd.Offset(0, 1)
Loop
Set CenteredRange = c.Parent.Range(cStart, cEnd)
End Function

Copy values from cells in range and paste them in random cell in range

I have two ranges as showed in this picture.
I'm trying to write a VBA macro that successively selects a single cell in the first range (“B23, F27”) , copies the selected cell's value, then selects a random cell in the second range (“G23, K27”), and pastes the first cell's value into the randomly selected cell in the second range.
This should repeat until every cell from the first range has been copied, or every cell in the second range is filled with a new value. In this example both outcomes are equivalent as both ranges have the same number of cells (25).
The result should be like the second image.
I tried to assign the first range to an array and then pick a random value from this array and paste it to the second range.
I also tried to extract unique values from the first range, build a dictionary with it then pick a random cell from the second range and a random value from the dictionary and paste it.
Later I tried again using the VBA syntax “with range” and f"or each cell in range" but I can’t just come up with something that actually works. Sometimes the second range is filled by various values, but not as intended.
First example: this one just does not work
Sub fillrange()
Dim empty As Boolean
'This part checks if every cell in the first range as a value in it
For Each Cell In Range("B23", "F27")
If Cell.Value = "" Then
empty = True
End If
Next
'If every cell is filled then
If empty Then
Exit Sub
Else:
With ThisWorkbook.Worksheets("Sheet1)").Range("B23", "F27")
.Cells(Application.WorksheetFunction.RandBetween(1, 25)).Select
.Copy 'the cell select works, but it will copy all range
'This does not work
'For Each Cell In Range("G23", "K27")
'Cells(Application.WorksheetFunction.RandBetween(1, 25)).Select
'.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteValues
'Next
End With
End If
End Sub
Second example: it fills the range but with wrong values
Sub fillrange2()
Dim empty As Boolean
For Each cell In Range("B23", "F27")
If cell.Value = "" Then
empty = True
'This part checks if every cell in the first range as a value in it
Exit For
End If
Next cell
If empty Then
Exit Sub
Else:
Dim ws As Worksheet
Dim lRow As Long, i As Long
Dim col As New Collection, itm As Variant
Set ws = ThisWorkbook.Sheets("Sheet1")
With ws
lRow = .Range("A" & .Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Row
For i = 1 To lRow
On Error Resume Next
col.Add .Range("B23", "F27").Value, CStr(.Range("A" & i).Value)
On Error GoTo 0
Next i
End With
Dim MyAr() As Variant
ReDim MyAr(0 To (col.Count - 1))
For i = 1 To col.Count
MyAr(i - 1) = col.Item(i)
Next
For Each cell In Range("G23", "K27")
cell.Value = Application.WorksheetFunction.RandBetween(LBound(MyAr), UBound(MyAr))
Next
End If
End Sub
Third example: as the second example, it fills the range but with wrong values
Sub fillrange3()
Dim MyAr() As Variant
MyAr = Range("B23", "F27")
For Each cell In Range("G23", "K27")
cell.Value = Application.WorksheetFunction.RandBetween(LBound(MyAr), UBound(MyAr))
Next
End Sub
Maybe something like this ?
Sub test()
Set Rng = Range("G23:K27")
n = 1
totCell = 25
Set oFill = Range("G23")
Set oSource = Range("B23")
For i = 1 To 5
oFill.Value = "X" & n
oFill.AutoFill Destination:=Range(oFill, oFill.Offset(4, 0)), Type:=xlFillSeries
Set oFill = oFill.Offset(0, 1)
n = n + 5
Next i
For i = 1 To 5
Do
RndVal = Int((totCell - 1 + 1) * Rnd + 1)
xVal = "X" & RndVal
Set C = Rng.Find(xVal, lookat:=xlWhole)
If Not C Is Nothing Then
C.Value = oSource.Value
Set oSource = oSource.Offset(1, 0)
check = check + 1
If check = 5 Then Exit Do
End If
Loop
Set oSource = oSource.Offset(-5, 1)
check = 0
Next i
End Sub
I cheat by making a preparation for the range G23 to K27 fill with X1 to X25 in the first for i = 1 to 5.
The second for i = 1 to 5 is to offset from column B to G.
The Do - Loop is to generate random number between 1 to 25.
If the generated number is found then the found cell has the value from the "source",
if not found, it loop until the generated number is found 5 times (hence also the found cell is fill with 5 different source). Then before the next i, the "source" cell is offset to the next column.
This if I'm not wrong to get what you mean.
Here's another approach, just for a bit of variety.
Sub x()
Dim r1 As Range, r2 As Range, i As Long
Dim r As Long, c As Long
Set r1 = Range("B23").Resize(5, 5) 'define our two ranges
Set r2 = Range("G23").Resize(5, 5)
r2.ClearContents 'clear output range
With WorksheetFunction
Do Until .Count(r2) = r2.Count 'loop until output range filled
r = .RandBetween(1, 25) 'random output cell number
If .CountIf(r2, r1.Cells(i)) = 0 Then 'if not in output range already
If r2.Cells(r) = vbNullString Then 'if random cell empty
r2.Cells(r).Value = r1.Cells(i).Value 'transfer value
i = i + 1
End If
End If
Loop
End With
End Sub

VBA Add rows based on how many times a criteria is met

I am quite new to VBA so my question may sound silly to some of you.
I have a problem with my code. I am trying to check between 2 sheets(1st: test and 2nd: test data. In the code I am using the code name of the sheets) how may times a criteria/my product is met and based on that number to add that many rows beneath the SKU/product.
What I want to do is, if for my first product/SKU I have stock in 5 different locations, I want to add 5 rows in the first sheet and to see the qty in column D and the location in column E.
TestData tab
The reason why I need to list the quantity in different cells is that the stock is in different locations, so I can not just add in to one cell.
I am also adding screen shots of how my two sheets look like.
I have not add the loop to find the location yet, but I want to understand how to add the rows first.
Sub test()
Dim myrange As Range, testrange As Range, cell As Range, result As Range
Dim i As Long, testlastrow As Long, lastrow As Long
Dim helprng As Range
lastrow = TESTTAB.Range("a" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).row
testlastrow = TDATA.Range("a" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).row
Set testrange = TDATA.Range("a2:c" & testlastrow)
Set myrange = TESTTAB.Range("b2:b" & lastrow)
Set result = TESTTAB.Range("d2:e" & testlastrow)
Set helprng = TESTTAB.Range("f2:f" & lastrow)
For Each cell In myrange
For i = 1 To lastrow
If cell.Cells(i, 1) = testrange.Cells(i, 1) Then
result.Cells(i, 1) = testrange.Cells(i, 2)
End If
Next i
Next cell
End Sub
Here is the raw structure you were asking for.
Sub test()
' 011
Dim Rng As Range
Dim Tmp As Variant
Dim Radd As Long ' number of rows to add
Dim R As Long ' row counter
With Tdata
' Range, Cells and Rows Count, all in the same sheet
' exclude caption row(s)
Set Rng = .Range(.Cells(2, "A"), .Cells(.Rows.Count, "A").End(xlUp))
End With
Application.ScreenUpdating = False ' speed up the process
With TestTab
' end the loop in row 2 because row 1 might contain captions
' loop bottom to top because row numbers will change
' below the current row as you insert rwos
' column 1 = "A"
For R = .Cells(.Rows.Count, 1).End(xlUp).Row To 2 Step -1
Tmp = .Cells(R, 1).Value
Radd = Application.CountIf(Rng, Tmp)
If Radd > 1 Then
.Range(.Rows(R + 1), .Rows(R + Radd)).Insert
.Cells(R + 1, 1).Value = Radd ' for testing purposes
End If
Next R
End With
Application.ScreenUpdating = True ' now you look
End Sub
As our Evil Blue Monkey has suggested, inserting blank rows and then populating them may not be the most efficient way. You can copy a row and then click Insert to insert the copied data into a new row. Get the syntax from the Macro recorder if it's of interest. It works with the Range object the same way.

Excel Loop Through all filled cells in row 1

I'm sure this is possible, im just not sure what the code should be. i have 2 sheets: (1)Component which has all the Component Names where an analyst got marked down on, including dates of when the call occurred, and (2)Calculator, which counts the number of times a specific component appeared in a specific week number.
ive created a code which gets the distinct Component Names from the Component Sheet, and then copies and transpose them to the Calculator sheet. all the Component Names are in Row 1 starting from Column D1 then goes to E1, F1, and so on. i want row 2 to display the count or the number of times the component(listed in row 1) appeared in a week.
The code i have only works for columns, i do not know how to make it get the non-empty values of an entire row.
'//here the code i used to transpose Distinct Components from the Component sheet to the Calculator Sheet
Public Sub GetDistinctComponents()
Application.ScreenUpdating = False
Dim lr As Long
lr = Sheets("Components Data").Cells(Rows.Count, "F").End(xlUp).Row
Sheets("Calculator").Unprotect Password:="secret"
Sheets("Components Data").Range("F1:F" & lr).AdvancedFilter Action:=xlFilterCopy, _
CopyToRange:=ActiveSheet.Range("DW1"), Unique:=True
With ThisWorkbook.Worksheets("Calculator")
.Range(.Range("DW1"), .Range("DW1").End(xlDown)).Copy
.Range("DX1").PasteSpecial xlPasteValues, Transpose:=True
.Columns("DW").EntireColumn.Delete
End With
Sheets("Calculator").Protect Password:="secret", DrawingObjects:=False
End Sub
Here's my Component sheet
And below is my Calculator sheet. as you can see, the code to transpose the distinct Components works fine. i just do not know how to get the value of Row 1 starting from DX so i can store it in a variable which i will use in counting the number of times that component appeared in a week . I'm thinking it should go like this
Component = wsCalculator.Cells(i, "D").Value
But this code only works if i want to get the Values of all cells in Column D, not the values of the cells next to D1
and here's the code i currently have
Public Sub CountComponent()
Application.ScreenUpdating = False
Sheets("Calculator").Unprotect Password:="secret"
Set wsComponentData = Sheets("Components Data")
Set wsCalculator = Sheets("Calculator")
Dim ComponentCount As Integer
'//Get the index of the last filled row based on column A
LastComponentRowIndex = wsComponentData.Cells(Rows.Count, "A").End(xlUp).Row
'//Get Range for ComponentData
Set ComponentRange = wsComponentData.Range("F2:F" & LastComponentRowIndex)
'//Get the index of the last filled row based on column C
LasttotalauditRowIndex = wsCalculator.Cells(Rows.Count, "C").End(xlUp).Row
'//Get range for Calculator
Set MyRange = wsCalculator.Range("C2:C" & LasttotalauditRowIndex)
TotalCalls = WorksheetFunction.Sum(MyRange)
'//Looping through all filled rows in the Components Data sheet
For i = 2 To wsCalculator.Cells(Rows.Count, "A").End(xlUp).Row
'//Get Component from cell in column "DW"
'Component = wsCalculator.Cells(i, "DW").Value
'//Count the # of calls that got hit in the corresponding Component
If wsCalculator.Cells(i, "DW").Value <> "" Then
ComponentCount = Application.WorksheetFunction.CountIf( _
ComponentRange, component)
wsCalculator.Cells(i, "DX").Value = ComponentCount
End If
Next
End Sub
I'll take a crack at this. I'm not 100% sure what you are doing, but I'm going to assume you will have soon calculations in cells D2, down, and to the right. Is that correct? Try this small code sample to copy from D2 (down and right) on the "Components Data" sheet, and transpose to your "Calculator" sheet.
Sub TransposeThis()
Set Rng = Sheets("Components Data").Range("D2:D7") 'Input range of all fruits
Set Rng_output = Sheets("Calculator").Range("B2") 'Output range
For i = 1 To Rng.Cells.Count
Set rng_values = Range(Rng.Cells(i).Offset(0, 1), Rng.Cells(i).End(xlToRight)) 'For each fruit taking the values to the right which need to be transposed
If rng_values.Cells.Count < 16000 Then 'To ensure that it doesnt select till the right end of the sheet
For j = 1 To rng_values.Cells.Count
Rng_output.Value = Rng.Cells(i).Value
Rng_output.Offset(0, 1).Value = rng_values.Cells(j).Value
Set Rng_output = Rng_output.Offset(1, 0) 'Shifting the output row so that next value can be printed
Next j
End If
Next i
End Sub

The code below is your own code, in part, which I commented, and of my own making for those parts where you seemed to have lost your way.
Public Sub CountComponent()
' Locations:-

'LastComponentRowIndex = .Cells(.Rows.Count, "A").End(xlUp).Row
'//Get Range for ComponentData
'Set CompRng = .Range("A2:A" & LastComponentRowIndex)
' avoids the need for decalring LastComponentRowIndex
Set CompRng = .Range(.Cells(2, "A"), _

End With
With WsCalc
' set a range of all criteria to look up
Set CalcRng = .Range(.Cells(1, "D"), _

'//Get the index of the last non-empty row in column B
' loop through all rows in WsCalc
For R = .Cells(.Rows.Count, "B").End(xlUp).Row To 2 Step -1
If Val(.Cells(R, "B").Value) Then ' presumed to be a week number
'//Loop through all audit criteria
For Each Cell In CalcRng
With .Cells(R, Cell.Column)
.Value = WorksheetFunction.CountIfs( _
CompRng, Cell.Value, _
CompRng.Offset(0, 1), WsCalc.Cells(R, "B").Value)
.NumberFormat = "0;-0;;" ' suppress display of zero
End With
Next Cell
End If
.Cells(R, "C").Value = WorksheetFunction.Sum(CalcRng.Offset(R - 1))
Next R
End With
Application.ScreenUpdating = True
End Sub
Frankly, I couldn't understand all of your intentions. I presumed that column B in your Calculations sheet would contain a week number and that this week number would also be found in the Components Data (in column B). If so, you would be counting the occurrences of each component by week, and that is what I programmed.
I think it doesn't matter if I got that part wrong. Your main question was how to look up each of the Components in Calculations!D1:??. That method is very well demonstrated in my above answer and I feel confident you will be able to transplant the useful bits to your own project. Good luck!
I suggest taking a look at VBA dictionaries. In this case, you could store each component as a key and for the value you can accumulate the number of occurrences of the component for a given week.
I don't have a VBA editor available on my computer at the moment to test this, but it would likely look something along the lines of what I've got below. Also, I'll admit that I may not have fully understood the layout of your sheets, but the general principle here will definitely apply.
For a pretty full overview of dictionaries in VBA, here's a good resource that'd I'd recommend: https://excelmacromastery.com/vba-dictionary/
