getting "Unexpected lock protocol found in lock file. Expected 3, found 0" error when trying to debug even after following this link and deleting the .gradle folder
current gradle version is 4.4 and android studio 3.1.2

I found another solution which i think is much better.
Go to project structure Ctrl + Alt + Shift + S and select Project from left menu if it is not already selected.
Select latest Android Gradle Plugin Version
Select Gradle Version to the latest stable one.
Select Apply.

This error normally occurs when your system mistakenly shut down and the project is building. Here is the solution:
close the project
delete the project from Android Studio list
Close Android Studio
delete the .gradle folder from the root of your project
Run Android Studio again
Open existing Android Studio project

Simplest & most easy way to solve this issue
This error generally occurs when we update our android studio version or make changes in previous projects. I don't know why but it comes randomly. I follow many ways to solve this but ill figure out the easiest way to tackle this.
First, go to the android studio, then click on File.
Second, go to the project structure & Click the project tab.
Third, most imp step -> check the (Gradle Version) of yours (In my case my previous is 6.5 & latest one is 6.8.1) if it is the previous one, not the latest, then select the latest one..... remember not to select (beta) select only stable release. & (Apply) then (OK) -> your project start downloading files & I hope your problem gets solved. Just like mine. Check Images for better understanding.

Main Solution : The most effective solution in my case was change distributionUrl (go to gradle-wrapper.properties) to latest version like below.

to
distributionUrl=https\://services.gradle.org/distributions/gradle-7.2-bin.zip
Second Solution : invalid cache and restart.
Third Solution : Clean Project Rebuild Project.

To solve this issue it took me few steps:
-go to C:\Users[username] and delete the .gradle folder
-go to the project folder and delete the .gradle folder
-inside the project folder execute gradlew.bat

Don't use different Gradle versions for building a project!
Make sure that gradlew build and gradle build use the same version.

My project works and builds successfully on my Mac but I cloned from github and although Android Studio appears to work normally, the project wouldn't build. I setup this project using Kotlin DSL.

Tried invalidate cache, removed all .gitignore rules but it's still the same.
Any ideas?
I had the same issue (Note : Running Linux/Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and Android Studio 4.1.1).
Things I tried that did NOT work and error persisted :
Invalidate Caches / Restart
Reboot
Nuking the .gradle and .m2 folders
Android Studio re-install
Downgrade kotlin gradle plugin from 1.4.21 to 1.4.10
What did work :
Moving the project to a different folder/location on disk and open Android Studio
As soon as I moved the project back to the original location I would start getting the same error. This lead me to believe it was some sort of caching issue, separate from the caches "invalidated".
Solution :
Android Studio / Intellij creates a hidden folder called :
On Linux :
AS : ~/.cache/Google/AndroidStudioX.X
IJ : ~/.cache/Jetbrains/IntelliJIdea2020.X
On Mac :
AS : ~/Library/Caches/Google/AndroidStudioX.X
IJ : ~/Library/Caches/Jetbrains/IntelliJIdea2020.X
On Windows:
AS : %HOME%\AppData\Local\Google\AndroidStudioX.X
IJ : %HOME%\AppData\Local\Jetbrains\IntelliJIdea2020.X
Inside this folder are other various folders, however I removed the relevant workspace file (workspace/[project name].[hashed value].xml) after which problem went away when opening the project again, from its original location.
So it appears that "Invalidate Caches / Restart" does not "Invalidate" all caches!
I hope this resolves you problem!

basically i deleted .idea folder and then invalidate and restart ... error goes away and built successfull.
This probably isn't the "correct" solution, however, it worked for me. I had to download a newer (Canary) Version of Android Studio to get this error message to go away and to finally build my Android project once again. I found this YouTrack JetBrains issue where people also suggested reverting to previous, known working, versions of Android Studio to get their projects to build again.
This is a SUPER frustrating issue and I hope that one of the approaches resolves your build issues for you!

After moving projects and files around I had also the honor to enjoy this error in Android Studio 4.1.1 (under Windows 10). Unfortunately, none of the above solutions worked for me but they helped me to narrow down the issue.
So, I found that there is a folder with workspaces under:
%HOME%\AppData\Local\Google\AndroidStudio4.1\workspace\
There are a couple of *.xml files named like the android projects. I deleted the one that didn't work.
Then switched back to Android Studio and used the Files > Invalidate Caches / Restart... feature. Android Studio restarted and the problem was fixed.
Bonus: How I found the workspace folder?
I used the Procmon.exe from Sysinternals where I filtered by the Process Name = studio64.exe. I then used the elephant-with-the-arrow button (Sync Project with Gradle Files) in Android Studio. At the end of the recording there was the workspace folder that Android Studio used just before Gradle failed.
I added a "problem" ticket to YouTrack, where I described my case in detail.
The support agent said the issue has already been fixed in the IDEA 2021.1 platform.

Error related to resources_ap after upgrading to Android Studio 3.4

I upgraded Android Studio 3.4 today. I am no longer able to run the the app. I have cleaned the project, restarted Android studio many times. I have also invalidated cache to no avail.
I am getting the following error when installing the app:
FAILURE: Build failed with an exception.
* What went wrong:
Execution failed for task ':app:transformDexWithInstantRunSlicesApkForDebug'.
> java.lang.RuntimeException: java.io.FileNotFoundException: E:\...\app\build\intermediates\instant_run_split_apk_resources\debug\instantRunSplitApkResourcesDebug\out\slice_1\resources_ap
Could anyone offer a tip on how to remedy this?

I have two projects with different behaviors related to this issue:
Project A initially had this issue. I disabled Instant Run per the answer, the problem was solved. I enabled Instant Run later, and Project A is still working fine.
Project B also had this problem that has been remedied by turning of Instant Run. However, its problem will occur as soon as Instant Run is turned on. I do not what difference between these two projects results in this. One suspect is library C project. Library C is a part of Project A (i.e. its source code, resources are in Project A). However, Project B uses the aar of Library C as a module.
Issue should be fixed in Android Studio 3.4.2.
EDIT: Here is my old answer on how to fix it in Android Studio 3.4.0 and 3.4.1:
Using Gradle 5.4 instead of 5.1.1 helped me with this error.
Update gradle-wrapper.properties file with:
distributionUrl=https\://services.gradle.org/distributions/gradle-5.4-all.zip
Please note I haven't tested older Gradle versions, so it's possible even (for example) 5.2 version will work. You can see all Gradle releases here - https://gradle.org/releases/
Switching off Instant Run as a workaround (File/Settings/Instant Run) seems to eliminate the problem.
According to OP it is possible to turn Instant Run back on without the problem recurring for some projects.
There is no need to turn off Instant Run.
Just delete the '.gradle' directory in the project and build directory inside the 'app' module.
Perform Clean Project and Rebuild Project.
This will solve the issue.
This is caused by "instant run" feature in android studio 3.4 , you can disable it by:
Open the Settings or Preferences dialog. Navigate to Build, Execution, Deployment > Instant Run. Uncheck the box next to Enable Instant Run

Go to your project folder and move everything from ...\app\build\ to some other folder outside project. (to clear build folder with back up)
In my case clearing the build folder solved the probem, till then i was disableing the instant Run option for every new install.
I tried both "Gradle 5.4" and "Switching off Instant Run" solutions but they didnt work until I turned on "Wait for Debugger" option until "Developer Options" in my phone (Huawei Mate 10). I have confirmed that this is only working with "Instant Run" off as well.
This problem happened to me on Windows. I solved it by disabling instant run.
I also have the same Android Studio version on Linux and it works fine with instant run enabled.

This same error happened when I updated to Android Studio 3.4.2, I updated the tools-build-gradle to 3.4.2 and the problem disappear.

Indexing freeze with message: Indexing paused due to batch updated

I've updated Android Studio to version 3.2.
After that update one of my projects don't want to index.
It freezes with the message
"Indexing paused due to batch update".
How can I fix this?

I faced the same issue with Android Studio 3.2. Invalidated the cache and restarted Android Studio, but it still did not work for me. Then I just re-imported the project and it worked!
Just Restart (File > Invalidate Cache & Restart > Just Restart)
I faced this issue in Android Studio 3.+ when forcefully close Studio in between some gradle process.
Pressing the play button worked for me. It finished indexing and installed the apk in seconds. The catch is that I have to do this every time and batch does not seem to update.
Click on the play button to the right of the progress bar.
Press the play button to the right of this message and the issue would resolve.
You have to do it every time, because right now the problem is systematic and there is no solution to stop it from appearing.

I saw this error and none of the solutions posted here worked for me. I had a specific scenario (see below), and I could get rid of the problem in my specific scenario. Not sure if the OP had the same scenario, by here are my two cents:
In my specific case I had two projects open in Android Studio, where one of the project was from a sshfs-mounted directory (the other project was local to my computer). I believe that made Android Studio throw the "Indexing paused due to batch updated" message on, strangely, both the projects.
To get rid of the error on the local project, I had to close the remote mounted project. On closing that project, the message was gone for my local project.

Close your project
Go to your project root directory,
Find and delete the xxx.iml file, the .idea and .gradle folders
Re-open your project using Android Studio.
I had the same issue and I fixed by do the following:
Click File --> click on Invalidate Caches / Restart

I faced the same Issue but the situation which lead to this was different:
I created a remote branch on the project's repository on GitHub and it was empty.
And then I checkout to that branch locally while android studio was running.
I then deleted the local repository and created it again but this time it was not empty. Further I pushed the code to the remote branch as well.Now I thought that it will start the project normally but again the same happened.it resulted in an IDE error.
To solves this issue I deleted that local repository and again re-imported it.Than it started correctly.
None of the other answers worked for me. Not even pressing the "play" button. All that worked was closing the project and re-opening it via "Open an existing Android Studio project".
The effect only lasts for a single session. As soon as I close and re-open the project, or AS 3.3, the problem re-appears.
Deleting C:\Users\<user>\.AndroidStudio3.3\config\options\recentProjects.xml (before starting AS 3.3) is an alternative way to accomplish the same thing.
EDIT
Upon upgrading to AS 3.3.2, this solution no longer worked. However, after an "Invalidate Caches and Restart", the problem disappeared.
Click on play button twice and then go to file->Invalidate Caches / Restart...
repeat this process every time whenever you face this issue.
I solved it by deleting all the *.iml files and the .idea folder
I faced the same issue, because my AS version is not the same with gradle plugin's version.
This issue coccus randomly in Android Studio V3.+ [Issue tracker:https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/118523471] .
There might be multiple reasons for this issue but it is mainly either ".gradle" related or ".iml" file related IntelliJ/Android Studio configurations.
Possible solutions:
Click on play icon under the processing bar (on the bottom of the android studio). But be aware that multiple clicks may also kill the the indexing process.
Invalidate cache (File -> Invalidate Cache & Restart -> Just Restart)
Clean ((Build -> Clean project) and Rebuild (Build -> Rebuild Project)
Sync Project with Gradle Files: Available options (depending on the Android Studio version) at

I have faced this issue quite a few times and got rid of then by using one or more of above solutions.
But in some scenario nothing of the above solutions may work (as recently I get trapped-in). In this case I have to recreate the same project from scratch and copied back the required files into it. But ideally this should not be the solution. Please let me know if any other possible solution is there.
Invalidate cache and restart did the work for me. Now, the build is compiling in seconds.

Why does Android Studio show errors in my code but app still runs

I have recently upgraded my laptop and re-installed Android Studio to the latest version and imported my app. The problem I am facing now is that when Android Studio start it finishes the gradle build etc, but shows errors all over my code. I can still debug the app on my phone and all is working.
How can I get this resolved?

I finally resolved this when it happened to me. The steps I did to resolve my problem
Build -> clean
File -> invalidate caches / restart
Delete .idea folder, close and reopen project
Normally one of the first two first steps is enough but today I actually had to delete the entire .idea folder and reopen the project to get rid of the "errors" (only IDE errors, project still ran for me).
If Methods named (A) (B) (C) (D), do not help you, then the following 4 steps are AGNI ASTRA.
Step 1 : Go To App Folder In Android Studio.
Step 2 : Locate Build Folder.
Step 3 : Delete Build Folder.
Step 4 : Sync File.
I will advise to use AGNI ASTRA, after trying, Methods named (A) (B) (C) (D) .

In my case (Windows), I have faced the same issue with 2 version of Android Studio,
1. Android Studio Arctic Fox | 2020.3.1 Patch 4 (My previous/normal IDE used)
2. Android Studio Dolphin | 2021.3.1 Patch 1 (My updated/current IDE used)
First, I thought this problem can be solve by Build>Clean Project, or Build>Rebuild Project, or File>Invalidate Caches..., but sadly won't work. So, I decided to update my IDE Arctic Fox to Dolphin.
Download from official site, installed with different folder (C:\Program Files\Android\Android Studio1), but project folder still same. During opening project, it won't run unless change Java version to Java 11 (File>Settings>Build, Exectuion, Deployment>Build Tools>Gradle>Gradle JDK>11 version).
Try opening several projects, however the IDE sometime still show the redline code, but the app can still debug/run as usual. Latest method I used, File>Invalidate Caches... And IDE haven't show any redline code.
*Remark: Don't know how long the latest method I used will work.

Android Studio is installing old apk on device

I am developing an Android app using Android Studio (0.89 Build #AI-135.1404660, Built on Sept 3,2014) using both emulator and Nexus 4 device.
I had the same issue with a version prior to that.
The problem is that after I changed my code and resource files, I still get the old apk installed on the device or emulator.
What do I need to do to get it to run current code? Is it a building config?
Is it a known issue with Android Studio?
Or with a Nexus 4 device?
This is the second time it has happened, and I resolved it(then) after trying one of the steps below. They have not worked for me again.
Here is what I've tried
Build > Clean Project > Restart Android Studio > Run
Build > Rebuild Project > Run
Step 1 plus Uninstalling of apk on device
Step 2 plus Unistalling of apk on device
Adding erroneous resource entry then running.

None has worked so far.
I had the same problem. After trying numerous methods that didn't work, I realized that I had accidentally changed an option in my "Run Configuration". Here's exactly what I did to fix the issue.
Run --> Edit Configurations
With your configuration selected on the left panel (mine says "app"), in the General tab on the right panel, there is a section called "Before launch". This section should have an option added called "Gradle-aware Make", but I had accidentally removed it.
I re-added it by pressing the "+", then clicking OK in the popup (leave the input box in the popup blank).
Click apply.
This fixed the problem immediately. Hope this helps someone!

The behaviour is erratic. I solved it by reviewing my code.It turned out that there was a resource file that was invalid. Try reverting back to the last working version of your code before the current changes... Probably a known issue that will be/was resolved out of Beta

I've spent way too many hours to keep this to myself. The way I fixed it was that I noticed some hours later that I was using different layout version in res/ .... I have actually two versions of layout (layout-v26) and (layout). All this time I was modifying the other one and uploading different one. Maybe its just a newbie mistake but I hope somebody will find it useful.
The reason why there are 2 version was because of " autofillHints="" -> quickfix -> create new version of layout "

I am using android studio for building flutter app, I was facing the same issue untill I did the following:
From Android Studio, go to Tools-Flutter-FlutterClean
It resolved my problem as of now.
Check Your Layout Files.
I ran into the same problem and I realized, it gives some problem if you have same layout in multiple orientations(portrait and landscape). If one is changed other remains unchanged and then it creates a conflict. So android studio installs the one with the previous layout
PS: This was happening in my case.
The problem occurred on my Android 11 devices. I guess ART ran old code dex2oated.
Solution:
Run / Debug Configurations - General - Always install with package manager (disable deploy optimization on Android 11 and later), and check the option.
I was also facing this issue and get solution by deleting build folder manually because some time ide cannot be able to delete this. So go to the app folder and find build folder delete this and after clean and build project and run again.

You should select "Deploy default APK" option in Run/Debug Configurations. After that Android Studio will upload and install new apk to your emulator/device when you run application.
In android studio. at right side. see gradle option. click it. and then press circular arrows button shown in red square.
Same problem, none of the solutions mentioned here had any effect. I had to disable the "Allow parallel run" in "Menu > Run > Edit configurations...".

The solution to this issue is actually very simple.
Android studio is actually not detecting some small changes that you have made to the application. That is why it is installing the previous builds.
The solution is easy -> Remove the previous builds.
In the right side, go to gradle tab.
Expand Tasks. Find "clean" or "cleanCache" task or any task that starts with "clean". Double click to run that task.
Expand "app". and do the same.
Then File> Invalidate cache and restart.
