Zero-sized print margins in Excel - excel

Lets assume that for some reason I want to draw a beautiful orange rectangle that fills the whole page without margins. I set up my page like this:
img
set all my margins to 0:
img
and obviously get this beautiful picture in Ctrl+P menu: img
Unless I launch this file on some other machine that only lets me do something like this: img (that's not exactly the image from the other machine, but it looks like this).
See those white margins? I can't get rid of them. Excel tells me that all margins are set to 0 and I can't change rows/columns size to remove those white lines.
I would much appreciate any help on this matter. Excel version are the same. The only difference I can think of - I have no printer drivers (because I have no printer) and the other machine has some printers installed. Can the problem be with printer drivers? I checked their options and didn't find anything related to margins.

Try Using Page Size exactly as your output page. May be you are using Letter Page size in Excel but having physically A4 size.

Looks like the problem was with printer after all. Changing printer fixed the issue.

Can anyone explain how this image protection trick is done?

If you look at this image
you can see it just fine (with anti theft diagonals over it.) in a browser but trying copying it and opening it up in your favorite image editor. The image is mostly black with the lines and an almost impossible to see version of the shape in editors.
I'm guessing they messed with the png meta data that browsers don't generally read but editors do?
It's not image protection. The file contains an alpha channel. The area between the hash lines has an alpha of 0, which means transparent. Many image viewers do strange things in this situation. They may, for example, clear the background to black before drawing the image.

Coloured textures for POIs

I was trying to use a coloured texture (PNG 24/RGB) for a POI (bicycle_parking) and it was not being rendered. It was added properly as a texture, it just won't be rendered on the POI.
After some testing I came to believe that POIs only accept grayscale textures that can later be filled up with a color. Is this right?
I also found out that the icon needs to be of a specific size (I got it working only at 32x32 pixels and 512x512, but the scaling did not make it look good). Is there any information regarding this?
Now I have a grayscale icon (mostly white) but the fill color does not change the white as expected. This is as far as I got..
Here's a set of icons similar to the ones I need to render into POIs
How could I achieve adding this type of icons as the texture of a POI? Workarounds/hacks are welcome as well :)
Thanks!
The texture of the Poi must have a size that is a power of 2 and goes from 32x32 up until 512x512. Also make sure that the colour code of that image is RGB anything else wont work. For the best visual result you have to create 3 sets of pngs for different screen densities, for example see heatmap_legend.png then look at heatmap_legend#2x.png and heatmap_legend#3x.png, you can find them in the "common" folder.
So turns out that the color wasn't a problem after all. It was quite tricky to get one image working, but once I had the image working, adding color to it and saving the PNG worked just fine.
The problem with the image size I experienced is still happening. You need to export it in 32x32, 64x64 or 96x96 in order to StyleEditor not to crash when opening the file.

Strange colors in Mapquest Open Aerial tiles

I have previously used Mapquest Open Arial tiles without any trouble. However, after the last server change I get tiles with weird colors. Their example tile still looks fine:
http://otile1.mqcdn.com/tiles/1.0.0/sat/15/5240/12661.jpg
But, the ones I'm trying to download look like this:
http://otile1.mqcdn.com/tiles/1.0.0/sat/13/1927/3385.jpg
The most striking problem is that the vegetation is red.
Does anyone know what's causing this or perhaps how I can correct the colors (I have tried playing around with them a bit in gimp but I couldn't find a solution)?
Disclaimer: I work at MapQuest. Unfortunately there was bad data in the last round of open aerial imagery updates that caused some areas (we've noticed Texas) to be seeded with discoloration from zoom level 12 and up. We've got this on our backlog, but I don't have an estimate as to when this issue will be resolved. Thanks for your interest in our Open Tiles!

How do I display same "proportional" text size on different resolutions?

I draw some text on screen using ID3DXFont::DrawText. This text should be displayed the same regardless of screen resolution.
For example, if screen resolution is low, text wrapped and when it is higher text is not wrapped. How can I avoid such situation? I want text size to be connected to screen resolution so if resolution is lower I want the text to be relatively smaller so that no wrapping happens. Is there any way?
Thanks in advance
Below is a logical solution. It doesn't have any of the code or procedures needed to make work in direct X but having done something similar outside of DirectX I wanted to share the logic
Working on whatever default screen resolution you want set the font to be the size needed.
Find the percentage of the screen height the font size you chose takes up.
Then having stored that value when you go to render again, in the final version of the program, calculate the font size based on the screen size and the percentage
What I was working in had functions like GetTextHeight and properties on the font size to allow you to set the height (which in turn set the font size appropriately). So if can find anything similar to this in DirectX than this could be a route for you to take.

LaTeX: How to make a fullpage vertical rule on every page?

I'm using LaTeX and I would like to have vertical rule along left side of page, topmargin to bottommargin, 0.5in from the left edge of the page. I want this on every page, so I assume that means it must somehow be tied to the header or the footer?
I've made no progress at all, so I need help with (1) making the full-length rule itself and (2) making it happen automatically on every page of the document.
Can someone tell me how to do that?
I got a working answer to my question on the Latex Community forum: http://www.latex-community.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=9072&p=34877#p34877
The answer I got uses the 'Background' package and this code:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{background}
\usepackage{lipsum}% just to generate filler text for the example
\SetBgScale{1}
\SetBgAngle{0}
\SetBgColor{black}
\SetBgContents{\rule{.4pt}{\paperheight}}
\SetBgHshift{-9cm}
\begin{document}
\lipsum[1-90]
\end{document}
Works great and was easy to adjust to put one vrule in left margin area and one in the right margin area.
There could be a LaTeX package to do this for you, but I'm more of a TeX person, so I tried to come up with a TeX solution (not always the best idea to mix plain TeX with LaTeX but I think I have it working).
Try this. Box 255 is the box register that TeX places the page contents into before the page is output. What I've done is taken the existing output routine, and changed it to insert into box 255: a 0-height, 0-width infinitely shrinkable-but-overflowing set of boxes containing a rule that is the height of the page, 0.4pt thick and with any luck, half an inch away into the left. The existing contents of box 255 is then added after this rule. Then I call the previous output routine which outputs the page (which now includes a rule), and also the headers and footers.
\newtoks\oldoutput
\oldoutput=\expandafter{\the\output}%
\output{%
\setbox255\vbox to 0pt{%
\hbox to 0pt{%
\vsize\ht255%
\vbox to \ht255{%
\vss
\hbox to -0.5in{%
\hss
\vrule height \ht255 width 0.4pt%
}%
}\hss
}\vss
\box255%
}%
\the\oldoutput
}%
Put it before your \begin{document} command. This might not solve your problem completely, but hopefully it should get you started. Here's a great page for learning about TeX primitives and built-in things.
Have a look at the eso-pic package. From memory, what you want would look like this:
\AddToShipoutPicture{%
\setlength\unitlength{1in}%
\AtPageUpperLeft{%
\put(0.5,\topmargin){\vrule width .5pt height \textheight}%
}%
}
It's not clear in your question if you want the line to span the text area or the whole paper height. Depending on the case, you have to replace \topmargin and \textheight by the correct values, either 0pt or whatever your top margin is, or by \paperheight. See the geometry package if you don't already use it for how to control those dimensions.
