I have been scouring forums for a solution but am striking out so far. I want to do a countA of all non empty cells -1. The data I'm pulling from is in Q:U, and I want to do a count based on the header of the columns in row 2. Because of where the data comes from in Q:U, the column order is not always going to be the same.
I have the following string which works where I can replace each instance of "Test" with the particular header I am looking for. Is there a simpler command using a combination if Index and Match that would work? Or even a better solution?
=IF($Q$2="Test",COUNTIF($Q$3:$Q$150,">0")-1,IF($R$2="Test",COUNTIF($R$3:$R$150,">0")-1,IF($S$2="Test",COUNTIF($S$3:$S$150,">0")-1,IF($T$2="Test",COUNTIF($T$3:$T$150,">0")-1,IF($U$2="Test",COUNTIF($U$3:$U$150,">0")-1,0)))))
use:
=COUNTIF(INDEX($Q$3:$U$150,0,MATCH("Test",$Q$2:$U$2,0)),">0")-1
You can replace "Test" with a cell reference that you then can change to look up different columns by their name.

I have a long list of part numbers where I need to be able to lookup and retrieve information on them.
These parts can have several alternative part numbers. I have figured out how to get the data returned if my data table only shows one of the possibly part numbers.
The issue is that I want it to be able to look up the columns to find a matching value.
As in the picture below for example. 5-E26 is the equivalent to E5-25. So if I input 5-E26 in the cell, I want it to continue searching to find the value in B7, and return the data as done A4 and A5.
Is this possible to do with Vlookup? Or is there a smarter method for it?
I struggle to fully understand how your data works but here is a possibility:
So the translated version of the formula I used in G2:
=INDEX($D$1:$D$5,AGGREGATE(15,3,((($A$2:$D$5=F2)/($A$2:$D$5=F2))*ROW($A$2:$A$5)),1))
You could also try (in my case):
=INDEX($D$1:$D$5,SUMPRODUCT(($A$2:$D$5=F2)*ROW($A$2:$D$5)))
Hi All i have a data of around 50000 candidates and one of the column contains the subject like below .
I want a formula in Column B to get the Unique Value from column A.
If all the values in "," are same then i need the Single value else all the cell Data.(There may be multiple comma separated entries)
I tried find formula but is not working.
Thanks in Advance.
This will work for any number of comma-separated entries:
=IF(REPT(LEFT(A2,FIND(",",A2&",")),1+LEN(A2)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A2,",","")))=A2&",",LEFT(A2,FIND(",",A2)-1),A2)
Regards
Bit of a mess but this will work:
=IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH(MID($A2,1,SEARCH(",",$A2,1)-1),$A2,LEN(MID($A2,1,SEARCH(",",$A2,1)-1)))),IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH(MID($A2,1,SEARCH(",",$A2,1)-1),$A2,LEN(MID($A2,1,SEARCH(",",$A2,1)-1))*2)),MID($A2,1,SEARCH(",",$A2,1)-1),$A2),$A2)
If search finds the first word again past the length of it it checks again past double it's length. If that's a match it returns just that word and otherwise returns the entire cell.
I will keep trying to find a more elegant solution but for now, this'll do. Well providing you are always searching on an index of 3. If you aren't I can still do it but would like to use helper columns (or have a crack at VBA which is easily up to the task, I wan't to see effort first though as I won't code for free as a rule of thumb)
The vlookup function appears to be broken. It is returning the same value for all lookups, but it should not.
I have it set like so:
=VLOOKUP(A3, Asset_Mapping!A$2:B$673, 1)
Where the lookup value is in the B column and the result is in the A column.
I use the $ so the rows are not auto-updated to A3:B674 etc as I paste the formula down the rows. However, even if I manually enter that formula into the next row, it is not finding the correct value.
IF i remove the "$", the correct values are found for the first rows where the values fall within the modified range (e.g. Asset_Mapping!A3:B674) but eventually as expected it stops finding the values as the range is invalid.
What am I doing incorrectly here? I have formulas set to auto-calculate.
Without testing on your actual data it's hard to confirm this will work but add the false parameter. This will find exact matches and not the first partial match.
=VLOOKUP(A3, Asset_Mapping!A$2:B$673, 1, false)
Collating the points together and clarifying the formula
Parameter 1: The value you are looking for
Parameter 2: The table with the data. First column is the value you are looking for.
Parameter 3: The column number of the value you want to show.
Parameter 4: If you want an exact match or partial match.
#Jeeped made the point of ordering data to get more reliable results. Good advice.
Andres has the right idea, but there is a faster way to fix the problem.
If it is returning the same value over and over again for your whole range, you probably have your Calculation Options set to "Manual".
Go into Formulas on the top ribbon and choose Calculation Options. There, you can change your calc method to "Automatic".
Also lookup value must be in first column.
Where the lookup value is in the B column and the result is in the A column.
VLOOKUP always lookup in the left-most column and returns a value from the column number specified. If you want to reverse the lookup/return order then use INDEX(..., MATCH(...))
=INDEX(Asset_Mapping!A$2:A$673, MATCH(A3, Asset_Mapping!B$2:B$673, 0))
Note that you were using a sorted, binary lookup; I've changed this to an exact match lookup which does not require sorted data.
Just in case adding a solution to this topic.
Don't know why in big tables Vlookup and Index+Match tend to show just the value of the first result in all the other cells.
In my case to fix this, after I've copied the formula in the whole range, I choose any cell containing it, press F2 and then Enter. It kind of forces excel to process everything.
I've been working on this for a week with no results. I've created this same spreadsheet for another apartment community without any issues, but for some reason, I cannot get the proper results in this spreadsheet. I've tried vlookup as well, but that didn't help either. any more advice?
Formula
Result and lookup vectors
So, I have an Excel-file with two sheets. The first sheet contains 7 Columns of different values.
The second sheet contains a list of special customer prices.
What i want to do, is basicly search for the value given in e.g. cell A2, in Sheet2!A:A. If i were to find this value (it's a text value), I want to return the value located in that spesific row containing the value searched for, only 3 colums to the right.
I've done a lot of experiments, but really can't get INDEX and MATCH to do the work properly for me. Anyh suggestions?
Feel free to ask for more information, as I know I can be a challange to understand..
Best regards
try offset() and match(), offset(reference, rows, cols). use match to find the number of rows or columns to move from the reference point.
Using OFFSET is against almost all best practice guides. It is a volatile function, meaning it should be avoided at all costs. Use INDEX+MATCH instead. It can do all the same stuff but has much better performance.
=INDEX(column holding the value you want to return, match to find row #, 1)
=MATCH(value you are looking for, column you are searching in, 0 means exact match)
Result:
=INDEX(Sheet2!$D$2:$D$10,MATCH(A2,Sheet2!$A$2:$A$10,0),1)
I believe the function you are looking for is a vlookup. Try this:
=vlookup(A2, Sheet2!A:D, 4, 0)

I'm using Excel 2010 and have a datasheet with multiple tabs, this is the current SUMIF function that I am using
=IF(SUMIF('Master Data'!$J$2:$J$200,'Resource View (2)'!B22,'Master Data'!$W$2:$W$200)>0,Current_row_different column, "")
Basically, I find some rows in the other sheet that have a value of 1 I then want to use these rows that have a value of 1 but use a different column within that row to populate the true condition.
So say for instance row 4 contains a 1 at column A I then want to stay on row 4 but get the value of column B for the true condition.
Is this possible?
EDIT:
I have now managed to get the function working however its a bit of an Excel hack, because I have had to move the columns around in the master data and its a bit messy now anyway here's what I've got
=IF(SUMIF('Master Data'!$C$2:$C$200,'Resource View (2)'!B22,'Master Data'!$W$2:$W$200)>0,VLOOKUP(B22,'Master Data'!$C$2:$F$90,3,FALSE),"")
Now I know this is because VLOOKUP searches through the first column specified and it doesn't seem to work at all if i try to put the range in backwards i.e. $F$90:$C$2 instead of $C$2:$F$90. Is there any way to manipulate VLOOKUP to work like this?
Yes, actually there is a way - a brother of VLOOKUP - it's INDEX(MATCH()). It is a very useful tool, as you can look at any column and return any other, not only looking at the first one to return the ones to the right. Also, INDEX(MATCH()) can be used in forming array formulas, if you need that, while VLOOKUP cannot.
Basically, this part of your formula:
VLOOKUP(B22,'Master Data'!$C$2:$F$90,3,FALSE)
would be changed with this:
INDEX('Master Data'!$E$2:$E$90,MATCH(B22,'Master Data'!$C$2:$C$90,FALSE))
So, after all, the equivalent for
=IF(SUMIF('Master Data'!$C$2:$C$200,'Resource View (2)'!B22,'Master Data'!$W$2:$W$200)>0,VLOOKUP(B22,'Master Data'!$C$2:$F$90,3,FALSE),"")
would be
=IF(SUMIF('Master Data'!$C$2:$C$200,'Resource View (2)'!B22,'Master Data'!$W$2:$W$200)>0,INDEX('Master Data'!$E$2:$E$90,MATCH(B22,'Master Data'!$C$2:$C$90,FALSE)),"")
