I have to parse this logs into following fields: timestamp, log-level, logger, msg, stacktrace.
i have used the multiline filter:
multiline {
pattern => "%{TIME:timestamp}"
negate => true
what => “previous”
}
and the pattern i used in grok filter:
match=>{"message"=>"%{TIME:timestamp} %{LOGLEVEL:loglevel} \s*\[%{DATA:logger}\]\s*%{GREEDYDATA:msg}\n*(?<stacktrace>(.|\r|\n)*)"}
i have checked it with http://grokconstructor.appspot.com/do/match. but got this matching error for stacktrace field.
please do suggest some suggestions.
thanks in advance.

You will need a multiline filter if you want to match the whole stacktrace. This multiline filter should work for you:
codec => multiline {
pattern => "^%{TIME} "
negate => true
what => previous
}
Explanation: Every line not starting with a timestamp (like 23:28:32.226) will be regocnized as part of the previous line. See also the docs on dealing with multilines.
Now to your pattern. Following works for me:
%{TIME:timestamp} %{LOGLEVEL:loglevel} \[%{DATA:logger}\] %{GREEDYDATA:message}\n(?<stacktrace>(.|\r|\n)*)
Pretty self explaining, I hope:
Escaping braces like [ and ] with \[ and \], \n to match the newline. Also note the spaces between the entries.
For the last part (stacktrace) also see this question on how to match everything including newlines.
A full configuration could look something like this:
input {
file {
path => "/var/log/yourlog.log"
start_position => "beginning"
codec => multiline {
pattern => "^%{TIME} "
negate => true
what => previous
}
}
}
filter {
grok {
match => [ "message", "%{TIME:timestamp} %{LOGLEVEL:loglevel} \[%{DATA:logger}\] %{GREEDYDATA:message}\n(?<stacktrace>(.|\r|\n)*)" ]
}
}
Results on http://grokconstructor.appspot.com:

Getting optional field out of message in logstash grok filter

I´m trying to extract the number of ms in this logline
20190726160424 [INFO]
[concurrent/forasdfMES-managedThreadFactory-Thread-10] -
Metricsdceptor: ## End of call: Historirrtory.getHistrrOrder took 2979
ms
The problem is, that not all loglines contain that string
Now I want to extract it optionally into a duration field. I tried this, but nothing happend .... no error, but also no result.
grok
{
match => ["message", "(took (?<duration>[\d]+) ms)?"]
}
What I´m I doing wrong ?
Thanks guys !
A solution would be to only apply the grok filter on the log lines ending with ms. It can be done using conditionals in your configuration.
if [message] =~ /took \d+ ms$/ {
grok {
match => ["message", "took %{NUMBER:duration} ms"]
}
}
I cannot explain why, but it works if you anchor it
grok { match => { "message" => "(took (?<duration>\d+) ms)?$" } }

Logstash multiline codec ignore last event / line

Logstash multiline codec ignore my last event (line) until send next package of logs.
My logstash.conf:
input {
}
http {
port => "5001"
codec => multiline {
pattern => "^\[%{TIMESTAMP_ISO8601}\]"
negate => true
what => previous
auto_flush_interval => 15
}
}
}
filter{
grok {
match => { "message" => "(?m)\[%{TIMESTAMP_ISO8601:timestamp}\]\s\<%{LOGLEVEL:log-level}\>\s\[%{WORD:component}\]\s%{GREEDYDATA:log-message}"
}
}
output {
elasticsearch {
hosts => "elasticsearch:9200"
index => "%{+YYYY-MM-dd}"
}
}
Moreover solution with auto_flush_interval don't work.
For example:
input using Postman:
[2017-07-11 22:32:12.345] [KCU] Component initializing
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException
at com.example.myproject.Book.getTitle(Book.java:16)
[2017-07-11 22:32:16.345] [KCU] Return with status 1
output - only one event (should be two):
[2017-07-11 22:32:12.345] [KCU] Component initializing
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException
at com.example.myproject.Book.getTitle(Book.java:16)
I need this last line.
Question:
Am I doing something wrong or there are problems with multiline codec? - How to fix this?
I'm afraid you're using the multiline codec wrong. Let's take a look at your configuration:
codec => multiline {
pattern => "^\[%{TIMESTAMP_ISO8601}\]"
negate => true
what => previous
}
It says if a logline does not (negate => true) start with a ISO timestamp (pattern) append it to the previous log line (what => previous).
But the logline you're missing starts with a ISO timestamp:
[2017-07-11 22:32:16.345] [KCU] Return with status 1
So it will not be appended to the previous log lines but instead create a new document in Elasticsearch.

logstash match log4j date wrapped in brackets

My logs start with this:
[2017-01-12 01:02:28.975] [some other stuff] more logs. this is multiline
I'd like to match this log and all the lines below it - ending the log entry when I see a new timestamp like the one above.
My input looks like:
input {
file {
type => "my-app"
path => "/log/application.log"
start_position => "beginning"
sincedb_path => "/tmp/.sincedb"
codec => multiline {
pattern => "^%[{TIMESTAMP_ISO8601}]"
what => "previous"
negate => true
}
}
}
This doesn't appear to be matching. I know my date is in the format of {yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss.SSS}. I just don't understand how to turn that into a logstash pattern.
Thanks
Try below Pattern in your filter
match => {"message" => "%{DATA:date} %{TIME:timestamp} *%{GREEDYDATA:message}"}

Logstash Grok overwrite not working

I have the following logstash grok statements that should run if the field contains a string "Caused" in which case a different pattern is applied to it and it is overwritten but for some reason it does work. The regex patterns definitely work individually and the issue is in the the logic below. Any help appreciated, thanks
grok {
patterns_dir => ["./patterns"]
match => ["message", "%{GREEDYDATA}\n%{JAVA_EXCEPTION_SHORT:exception}"]
}
if [exception] =~ "Caused" {
grok {
patterns_dir => ["./patterns"]
match => ["exception", "{JAVA_EXCEPTION_LONG:exception}"]
overwrite => ["exception"]
}
}
Custom Patterns:
JAVA_EXCEPTION_LONG (?<=^Caused by: ).*?Exception
JAVA_EXCEPTION_SHORT ^.+Exception
Example log message:

The grok filter fails because you're missing a % in this line:
match => ["exception", "{JAVA_EXCEPTION_LONG:exception}"]
It should look like this:
match => ["exception", "%{JAVA_EXCEPTION_LONG:exception}"]
Since the parsing failed, the field exception was not overwritten.

Defining a grok filter over multiple lines in logstash

I have a very long logstash grok filter:
match => { 'message' => '%{MONTH:month} %{NUMBER:day} %{TIME:time} %{WORD:log_host} %{WORD:generator}\[%{NUMBER:unknown}\]: %{IP:connIP}:%{NUMBER:connPort} \[.*\] %{WORD:namespace}\~? %{NOTSPACE:unknown} %{NOTSPACE:unknown} %{NUMBER:res_statuscode} %{NUMBER:unknown} (?<unknown>\-.*\-) %{NOTSPACE:unknown} %{NOTSPACE:unknown} \"%{WORD:method} %{PATH:path} %{DATA:httpversion}\"' }
Any way to break this up over multiple lines? I tried the following:
match => { 'message' => '%{MONTH:month} %{NUMBER:day} %{TIME:time} %{WORD:log_host}'
' %{WORD:generator}\[%{NUMBER:unknown}\]: %{IP:connIP}:%{NUMBER:connPort}'
' \[.*\] %{WORD:namespace}\~? %{NOTSPACE:unknown} %{NOTSPACE:unknown}'
' %{NUMBER:res_statuscode} %{NUMBER:unknown} (?<unknown>\-.*\-) %{NOTSPACE:unknown}'
' %{NOTSPACE:unknown} \"%{WORD:method} %{PATH:path} %{DATA:httpversion}\"' }
But it's giving me errors, even separating the strings with commas doesn't work: {:timestamp=>"2016-09-30T08:38:50.549000+0000", :message=>"fetched an invalid config" ...
There's no mention of handling this in the official documentation:
https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/logstash/current/filter-plugins.html
https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/logstash/current/config-examples.html
The error msg clearly shows there is an error with the config file.

match => {"message" => ["(%{EXIM_DATE:exim_date} )(%{EXIM_MSGID:exim_msg_id} )(?<msg_c>Completed)",
"(%{EXIM_DATE:exim_date} )(%{EXIM_MSGID:exim_msg_id} )(?<msg_f>frozen)"
]
