I want to install node 6.9.4.
In windows console I try with this:
npm install node#v6.9.4
And it throws this error:
npm ERR! No compatible version found: node#v6.9.4
npm ERR! Valid install targets:
npm ERR! 0.0.0
In linux the result is similar. I try with
sudo npm install node#v6.9.4
and the output is:
npm ERR! version not found: node#6.9.4-cls

You should use nvm to install and manage node versions and not npm
NPM is the package manager for node and not a version manager.
To install a particular version of node using nvm, just do
nvm install v0.10.32
NPM should be used to install packages/modules.
So say you need to use request module for a particular project
You can do
npm install request
Both these support tons of options which could be found over the documentations
I recommend you use nvm: Nodev Version Manager
It would be as easy as
nvm install 6.9.4
It's a really good tool to manager all of your node versions.

I am getting this error and I can't run npm install on Ubuntu. I checked with node -v and it shows v17.4.0

Update: I had to uninstall and remove all the folders related to node and npm. I've also installed the latest version of nvm 0.39 and only then I managed to actually upgrade the node to the right version. Everything is working now.

If the requirement is to use Node.js v4.x, and npm v3.x, I was able to use
nvm install --lts=argon
to install Node v4.8.3 LTS. But on the Node / npm release page, it says Node v4.8.3 comes with npm 2.15.11. And npm 3.x comes with only Node v5.x.
In this case, how can we make npm v3.x while keeping Node at version 4.x?
(and since npm v3.x can be 3.3.6 to 3.10.10, which version should be installed?)
I think I found the answer. It is to use npm install to upgrade itself:
npm install npm#3.10.10 -g
(or any version you want).
I am starting to use Angular 2, which requires npm 3.x.x, so I installed it with npm install -g npm3. The Angular 2 tutorials tell me to verify that I have npm 3.x.x by running npm -v, however when I run that, it still says I have version 2.15.8. It shows that I have version 3.10.7 if I run npm3 -v, but not if I run npm -v. Is this going to cause errors? Do I need to it to say I'm using version 3.x.x when I run npm -v? If so, what do I need to do?
EDIT:
Node.js version: node -v reveals that I am using v4.4.7 (Angular2 requires something between 4.4.x - 5.x.x, so I should be good here)
OS: I am currently using Windows 10 on a PC, but have had the same issue with my Mac.

Updating npm with npm itself will store npm.cmd in ../appdata/roaming/.
To avoid conflicts with an older npm version you need to remove npm.cmd from C:\Program Files\nodejs\npm.cmd
I installed the node as new version. once i installed i checked in cmd for like this:

But after I installed the node, npm I am trying to install the latest yeoman. in their website, i noted the npm version requires v2.1.0+ - i confused here. how to i install the npm as they requested?

tl;dr - npm -g install npm does work, but the old version of npm is still in your PATH.

While trying to install the less node module globally via the Node Package Manager, I ran into an interesting problem that I am having trouble solving. Basically, I am getting an error that claims the node module, less, is incompatible with my version of node. It says I am using node v0.6.12 and that it requires at least v0.8.0 to work.
First I made sure that I was using one of the latest versions of Node:
nvm use v0.10.11
Now using node v0.10.11
node -v
v0.10.11
Then I tried to install the less module globally:
sudo npm install -g less
And got this error message:

Here you can see that the node package manager is trying to install less using (or thinks it is using) node v0.6.12. It seems as though some others have run into this problem, but his problem turned out to be that he had previously installed node via apt-get, and was resolved by him using the Node Version Manager. I initially installed Node via NVM, however.the Any help that you guys could offer would be greatly appreciated.
Note: It is worth mentioning that it will successfully install using npm install -g less, without sudo permissions. However, as soon as another terminal is opened, the less node module is removed from /usr/local/lib/node_modules, rendering it useless.
Have you tired completely removing the old version, v0.6.12 with something like
sudo apt-get purge node.
I'm not a great with linux, but it seems sudo still has the old version of node in its path and calling npm under sudo is finding it and trying to use it.
The Node.js installed with Linux is probably installed in /usr/sbin/ (at least it was for me on Ubuntu 13.04). That's the old version. Since you have nvm installed and having that manage your Node.js versions, you'll want to point to ~/.nvm/v0.10.11/bin/node.
You already got a nodejs copy on your system.
The solution is to re-install or overwrite your node using /usr/local for your prefix
git clone https://github.com/joyent/node
cd node
./configure --prefix=/usr/local
make
sudo make install
