In my Ubuntu VM, I have configured a cronjob
cat /var/spool/cron/crontabs/*
MAILTO="myemail#gmail.com"
* * * * * python /home/forge/web-app/database/backup_mysql.py
I checked pgrep cron I got number printing out fine.
It been 5 mins now, I don't see any email send to me.
I don't see any backup file is being generated.
I have a feeling that this cronjob never got run.
How do I debug this ?
Do I need to restart some kind of service ?
Could you please check the cron service.
service cron status.
And check the cronjob logs to check it is running or not
tail -f /var/log/cron | grep username
Check the cron
crontab -e -u username
And also check permission.
chmod +x <file>

How can I delete or clear all the cron job that I made previously and just run new cron job that I assigned? I'm using crontab -r but it just clear in the crontab display, but it still runs that cron job and the previous cron job that I have already deleted by using that code.
After I clear cron job using crontab -r, I run crontab -l and it shows this output.
No crontab for trygcp
Use this command,
crontab -e
to access crontab, in there you can deleted specific line or job you created.
About the output you are getting, that only means there is no crontab created under the username trygcp
What you can do is this:
crontab -u [username] -e
Where:
-u define user
-e edit user's crontab
This command will create a crontab under your username, but remember you must have root privilege for you to do this.
I am new to setting up cronjobs and I'm trying to do it on a virtual machine in google compute engine. After a bit of research, I found this StackOverflow question: Running Python script at Regular intervals using Cron in Virtual Machine (Google Cloud Platform)
As per the answer, I managed to enter the crontab -e edit mode and set up a test cronjob like 10 8 * * * /usr/bin/python /scripts/kite-data-pull/dataPull.py. I also checked the system time, which was in UTC, and entered the time according to that.
The step I'm supposed to take, as per the answer, is to run sudo systemctl restart cron which is throwing an error for me:
sudo systemctl restart cron
System has not been booted with systemd as init system (PID 1). Can't operate.
Failed to connect to bus: Host is down
Any suggestions on what I can do to set up this cronjob correctly?
Edit a cron jobs with crontab -e and inset a line:
* * * * * echo test123 > /your_homedir_path/file.log
That will write test123 every minute into file.log file.
Then do tail if and wait a couple minutes. You should see test123 lines appearing in the file (and screen).
If it runs try running your python file but first make your .py file executable with "chmod +x script.py"

I've modified the crontab with:
sudo crontab -e
and added a cron for a script to run every minute so I can test if it works:
1 * * * * /scripts/backup-script.sh > /scripts/backup-script.logs
Afterwards, I tried to restart the cron service to restart the server but the cron doesn't seem to be working, I tried to use:
crontab -l
and it appears to have the old content as if I didnt even modify it. However, going into crontab -e does show the updated content.
To make your script run every minute your cron record must be:
* * * * * /scripts/backup-script.sh > /scripts/backup-script.logs
What you enter will run every 1st minute every hour
And if you add record via crontab command you do not need to touch cron daemon
To see the cron record you add with sudo crontab -e you must check it with command sudo crontab -l. Otherwise you list cron record of different user

Can not get this simple task working

what im doing wrong ?
if i run it in terminal line:
wget -m ftp://usarname:password#host.com:port/remote/folder -P /local/folder
it is working as expected but if i add under crontab -e nothing happens.
I would like cron job to check files every day at 17:00 for changes.

Here is the step I did:
sudo su
cd /etc
crontab -e

*/30 * * * * /usr/bin/php /var/www/html/tt-rss/update.php --feeds --quiet
But I still got the message "Update Daemon is not running".
May I know, is this correct step for Cron job?
You should enter these commands on Amazon Linux 2:
sudo systemctl start crond
sudo systemctl enable crond
This sounds like crond is not running. In which case:
service crond start
chkconfig crond on
You should first inspect the cron log file /var/log/cron and look for any errors. This will probably give you the answer. Also make sure you can run the command successfully on the command line (/usr/bin/php /var/www/html/tt-rss/update.php --feeds --quiet).
Please check the spaces, it could be because of spaces are not placed correctly
Simply do : * * * * * wget -o - -q -t 1 "your url with cron file"
Please remove the "--quiet" part from your cron command and check the log and feed again
