How to run query on Hive table with JsonSerDe using Spark interpreter in Zeppelin / HDP 2.4? - apache-spark

Not able to run hive query using spark Interpreter in Zeppelin.
I am able to load hive context. Hive table is using org.apache.hive.hcatalog.data.JsonSerDe . But query always returning: classNotFoundException org.apache.hive.hcatalog.data.JsonSerDe.
i added spark.executor.extraClassPath and spark.driver.extraClassPath in spark configuration.
i tried copying jar in /interpreter/spark/dep folder as well but no luck.
I added this in Zeppelin Interpreter configuration as well. I am stuck , please help me.

you need to copy hive/lib/hive-hcatalog-core-xxx.jar to spark/jars/

Creating HiveContext in spark application on oozie

We are running a spark application using oozie. In the application we are creating hiveContext.
When running the application with spark-submit everything works fine, but when run it with oozie we get the following exceptions :

This indicates that accessing makeComputngMap will fails. The makeComputingMap is no longer public method since guava version 15.0. The newer version of the guava version over shadows the old version which is used by the spark. Could you please check your spark classpath and keep the 14.0.1 version as first entry in classpath or replace with old version.

Two steps to solve this issue:
The spark-job-server.jar created after execute ./bin/server_package.sh < enviroment> it have to be moved to the jars folder located on $SPARK_HOME
Nevertheless I had to download akka-slf4j_2.11.0-RC3-2.3.0.jar and put it on the $SPARK_HOME/jars folder too.

Oozie > Spark action containing Hive context can not work because of exceptions

Change amazon-linux to ubuntu when loading clusters using spark_ec2.py

When I launch from the provided scripts for ec2 (spark_ec2.py) the cluster get spun off with amazon-linux nodes. I want it to be ubuntu.(spark_ec2.py => I am currently using the brew version and hope thats not an issue)
After searching I found following thread that discuss a similar issue. But unfortunately there is no clear answer provided on how I would change default Operating System of the cluster nodes.

This is the first time I am working with AWS, after many attempts I figured all the actions that I needed to take to launch a cluster but now I am dealing with above two issue which may or may not be related to one another.

Spark REPL gives an error when starting

What the problem is?
This error message indicates javax.ws.rs API jar file is missing from your classpath. You can go to Maven repository and download that jar file and put that in you classpath. javax.ws.rs is the Java API for RESTful web services.
