GHCI Segfault When Creating a Database Connection with postgresql-simple - haskell

I am getting a GHCI segfault when trying to create a database connection in GHCI with postgresql-simple.
I am using GHC 8.0.1, OSX 10.11.16. I do not have a system GHC, only the one installed by stack.
If I do the following in my project, it segfaults:

Postgresql Version: 9.5, installed using the EnterpriseDB installer
The request to post my stack.yaml (which is below) reminded me of an issue I had when trying to install postgresql-libpq. This is probably related.

An Idea I had
I think the version of postgresql-libpq I am using was built with libiconv.2.dylib compiled for Postgresql 9.4, but the database I am trying to connect to is actually Postgresql 9.5. This may be the reason for my issue.
A Thing I Did Inspired By that Idea
Here are some steps I took to try to debug further and/or fix this. I first linked the Postgresql 9.5 *dylib files into my /usr/local/lib directory in order to replace the old ones linked against the Postgresql 9.4 version.
$ cd /usr/local/lib
$ sudo ln -s -f /Library/PostgreSQL/9.5/lib/*dylib .
After that, I tried to force stack to rebuild postgresql-libpq and postgresql-simple in this way:
$ stack exec -- ghc-pkg unregister --force postgresql-simple
$ stack exec -- ghc-pkg unregister --force postgresql-libpq
$ rm -rf ~/.stack/precompiled/x86_64-osx/ghc-8.0.1/1.24.0.0/postgresql-libpq-0.9.1.1/
$ rm -rf ~/.stack/precompiled/x86_64-osx/ghc-8.0.1/1.24.0.0/postgresql-simple-0.5.2.*
$ stack build
At which point, it promised me it would build and configure the removed packages. Still segfaulted when I ran the above, however.

While attempting to generate a stack trace for my issue, I discovered that I can start ghci in the following way:
$ stack ghci --ghci-options -fexternal-interpreter
And then, for whatever, reason, the segfault does not appear and everything works as expected. I have no idea if anyone else will find this useful.
The thing that seemed weird to me was that I didn't have an issue when the code was compiled and run. I only had an issue in GHCI.
Anyway, until I find out more or someone has a better suggestion, I'll go with this so I can continue testing what I want in the REPL.

How to work together with cabal-3 and ghc (ghc-pkg, too)?

With the release of cabal-3, the packages from Hackage are installed in a new location that the compiler ghc and ghc-pkg know nothing about.
In other words, packages are installed but not registered for ghc. Ghci, ghc, ghc-pkg cannot work.
For example,
cabal install safe --lib

I use as a temporary solution setting a system variable
GHC_PACKAGE_PATH=C:\Users\me\AppData\Roaming\cabal\store\ghc-8.10.2\package.db;

On Windows, packages installed with cabal seem to be unavailable in ghc/ghci
but with updates I will have to manually change this system variable.
Are there any more elegant solutions to this problem?

One way to achieve this is to use the --env flag to make the libraries available to GHC whenever you are in the current directory:

Note that you probably shouldn’t do this in a directory where you actually have a foo.cabal file. See the documentation of cabal v2-install for details.
Working with GHC_ENVIRONMENT is better:
setx GHC_ENVIRONMENT C:\Users\me\.ghc\x86_64-mingw32-8.10.2\environments\default
it helps for ghc and ghci.
After, in C:\Users\me\AppData\Roaming\cabal\config we should add
package-db: C:\Users\me\AppData\Roaming\cabal\store\ghc-8.10.2\package.db
it helps for cabal.
Unfortunately, ghc-pkg still has problem and works with such flag:
ghc-pkg list --user-package-db="C:\Users\me\AppData\Roaming\cabal\store\ghc-8.10.2\package.db"
For Linux the steps are similar.

Configure stack ghci prompt

Is it possible to configure stack ghci similar to the way ghci is configured via the ~/.ghci file?
Currently stack ghci does not pick up the settings in the ~/.ghci file.
I'm looking into setting the prompt to be a lambda instead of the loaded modules:

None of the other 2 configurations mentioned does anything regarding changing the prompt.
Try to put your config under:

How to use Text.Parsec in GHC-8.2.2 and Cabal-2.0.0.1

Manjaro might have inherited from Arch's issues with Haskell.
What is going on
Arch installs dynamic libraries, but ghc links statically by default. This is also what the error message "There are files missing in the ... package", indicating that the package exists but does not contain what ghc is looking for.
If I try compiling with the -v verbose flag on, the error message expands to:

In particular, look into the last reported location, which may be different on your system; if my guess is correct, ghc is looking for a static interface file .hi as the message indicates but there is only a dynamic one .dyn_hi.
Fix
Compile with the -dynamic flag.
ghc -dynamic main.hs

You will have to choose between static and dynamic linking; I don't actually understand the trade-off here.

Why does Stack pick ghc 7.10 even with an lts for ghc8?

I created a new project and, as you can see, it even downloaded a brand new build plan for lts-7.4, which as you can see uses ghc-8.0.1.
But when running stack ghci, it built the project with GHC 7.10, and dropped me in a 7.10 ghci shell.

I rely on the lts determining the version of ghc in use also for CI, so it's a bit worrying if my assumption doesn't hold (anymore?)

Where is the source of `GHC.Paths.*` value came from?

How can I fix the wrong value? How to to config stack to make GHC.Paths return the correct one?

I tried running stack with --no-system-ghc and it didn't make any difference.
I tried to remove my ~/.cabal and ~/.stack folders. I had to do stack setup, and after stack re-installed the compiler it doesn't give me that wrong path, but it doesn't give me any path, the output of that command is now empty.
I have nothing special in any of Setup.hs too.
You are almost right, the GHC_ variables are CPP definitions coming from custom Setup.hs:

About your problem with wrong path, try to run stack --no-system-ghc ghci. If it still shows "/usr/bin/ghc-7.10.3" for GHC paths, then I suspect that you had GHC there when you compiled ghc-paths for GHC-7.10.3, and as stack is quite good in not rebuilding stuff, the old version of ghc-paths is still there. I don't know a way to rebuild a package in a snapshot, other then whiping ~/.stack and starting over; which might be a good idea. if you changed you global GHC stuff.
There is a related issue: Stop using system-ghc silently.
