I've been trying to install the parsec library for haskell but I'm running in to a lot of errors. Im very new to haskell & cabal and i don't quite understand the output of the log file.
the output of the log file is here:
http://pastebin.com/6hPQN1W4
I tried installing the packages that the log file said that it could not find, but i keep getting errors when trying to install the packages.
I reinstalled cabal and also ran cabal update, but this did not resolve the issue
any help will be appreciated?
I suggest using stack tool with its stackage infrastructure. Please see http://haskellstack.org for more details.
You could try installing parsec in a sandbox.
$ mkdir asdf
$ cd asdf
$ cabal sandbox init

I am using ghc-7.6.3 with cabal-install version 1.18.0.5 using version 1.18.1.3 of the Cabal library. My operating system is Debian Wheezy 7.5.
I have a fresh cabal install, and that I have removed the .ghc from my home directory.
After that I have changed the cabal config file and set:
remote-repo: stackage-nightly-2014-12-15:http://www.stackage.org/snapshot/nightly-2014-12-15
After that I did (following this documentation)
$ cabal update
$ cabal install alex happy yesod-bin
and the build complained that it cannot build package system-filepath-0.4.12.
So, I am trying to build package system-filepath-0.4.12 manually. After unpacking the archive, I cd-ed to the unpacked folder and entered:
$ ghc -o Setup Setup.hs
$ ./Setup configure
which gives:
Configuring system-filepath-0.4.12...
Setup: At least the following dependencies are missing:
text >=0.7.1
But
$ cabal install text
gives:
Resolving dependencies...
All the requested packages are already installed:
text-1.1.1.3
Use --reinstall if you want to reinstall anyway.
How is it possible that a package is reported as installed and missing at the same time?
Should I look for a more stable remote-repo configuration, is there something I can check that might fix the missing text package? Note that I am not using a sandbox.
EDIT
Thanks for pointing out that there are two package databases.
I have now tried both
$ cabal configure
$ cabal build
and
$ Setup configure --user
$ Setup build
Both give no error during configuration, but give the following error during the build phase:
Building system-filepath-0.4.12...
Preprocessing library system-filepath-0.4.12...
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lHStext-1.1.1.3-ghc7.8.3
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
Try this instead
cd system-filepath--0.4.12
cabal configure
I am not sure why, but this works for me, whereas Setup.hs gave me the same error (truth be told, I always do it the cabal configure way, and am not sure if your way should also work).
There are (at least) two package databases: a global one available to all users, and a user-specific one. By default, Setup.hs looks in (and installs to) the global one, and cabal-install looks in (and installs to) the user-specific one. You can manually choose one or the other with --user and --global; so, you could fix this either by using
./Setup configure --user
or by
cabal install text --global
You can see the current state of the package databases with ghc-pkg, which will report information about both by default.
I've made a cabal sandbox, installed a package to it, yet runhaskell Setup configure complains that the package dependency that I just installed is missing.
I verified the package name and version and that's okay.
Running cabal install --dependencies-only says "all the requested packages are already installed".
What's going on & how can I fix it?
If relevant I've encountered this with QuickCheck-2.7.5 on Windows 7 with cabal-install 1.20.0.3 using cabal 1.20.0.1 and ghc 7.6.3.
Configuring through runhaskell Setup configure outputs:
Configuring MyPackage-0.1.0.0...
Setup.hs: At least the following dependencies are missing:
QuickCheck ==2.7.5
Instead of running runhaskell Setup configure, you should do cabal configure. runhaskell doesn't know about sandboxes.
I was trying to install lambdabot with ghc-7.8.2, but encountered an error while installing haskell-src-exts. To diagnose the issue, I tried
cabal install haskell-src-exts -v3
and get the following errors. I am using Windows XP 64-bit. I don't know if this has anything to do with spaces in windows directory names. Any ideas/pointer how to fix the problem?

I figured it out. I tried to locate the log file as the comments suggested. However, in the cabal/log folder, there are only two log files for hashtable and haskline after running cabal-install lambdabot on a fresh ghc-7.8 installation.
To see if this error has anything to do with the spaces in the default cabal directory, I used a folder without spaces and did manual installation:
$ cd /d/temp
$ cabal get haskell-src-exts

setup.exe: The program 'happy' version >=1.17 is required but it could not be
found.
So, happy in the dependency is somehow missing and undetected by cabal. It turns out happy too has an issue using the default cabal install command, and it can be overcome by a manual installation in, e.g., /d/temp,
cabal get happy && cd happy* && cabal configure && cabal install
This installs happy and doing the same for haskell-src-exts installs the package correctly. But there are other errors along the way for installing lambdabot, none of which seems to like the one encountered here with haskell-src-exts and happy.
hi i'm trying to install, (without having to update or install the latest compiler),reactive-banana-wx and one of the requirement's are failing
cabal install reactive-banana-wx
and heres the error

when i try to cabal install wxcore ,wx or wxc they all say failed and point towards wxc being required.
here's the error

here's my compiler info if it would be useful
ghc -v
Glasgow Haskell Compiler, Version 7.0.4, for Haskell 98, stage 2 booted by GHC version 7.0.4
I've got the same error trying to install phooey with ghc 7.4.1 on Debian tonight. The reason is a bug in the package wxc-0.90.0.4 and it should affect all wxHaskell-based packages. You can fix it, there is no need to downgrade your wxc package...
The easiest way to reproduce it is to do
cabal install wxc
or
cabal install glade
It might be a good idea to make sure that all prerequisites are in place, before you do it. wxc depends on a number of cabal and Linux packages and all of them should be installed and compiled... I did it in the most stupid way possible, just by running
cabal install wxc
and reading error messages which it spills out. This sweetie usually tells you what it wants... For instance, if it complains about cabal package x, just do cabal install x. If it complains about Linux package y, then use your Linux package manager and install the development version of this package, which is called normally lib<y>-dev in Debian. So, for instance, if
cabal install wxc
gives you an error saying that package gtk+2.0 is missing, you want to do
apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev
The same story with cairo, glade2 and other GTK-related libraries
When you are green with all prerequisites, you want to install wxWidgets-2.9, which is currently in the Development stage... so, it doesn't have any binaries for Linux and you should build it yourself. Download the source code from wxWidgets website and build it. It is pretty easy to do, just:
untar/unzip the source code to your favorite directory
run ./config
run ./make
If you are on wxc-0.90.0.4, at this moment you should encounter our little bug... To keep the long story short, it is in the file eljpen.cpp, which you can find in
~/.cabal/packages/hackage.haskell.org/wxc/0.90.0.4/wxc-0.90.0.4.tar.gz
Open the archive, go to the line 159 in the file and replace *_ref = NULL; with _ref = NULL or anything else what makes more sense. Then recreate the archive in the same place with the fixed eljpen.cpp file in it.
run ./make
It should work now.
run sudo make install (normally, you should have root privileges to insatll wxWidgets library...).
after it is done try to do
cabal install wx
again. It should be working now. I guess, after that you can enjoy your reactive-banana-wx, wxHaskell, phooey, etc.
PS http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=3576397&group_id=73133&atid=536845. Why didn't I find it earlier? :/
I'v solved this problem on Lubuntu 12.10 so:
sudo cabal info wx
Synopsis: wxHaskell
Versions available: 0.11.1.2, 0.12.1.4, 0.12.1.5, 0.12.1.6, 0.13.2,
0.13.2.1, 0.13.2.3, 0.90, 0.90.0.1 (and 11 others)
I picked out different versions of wxHaskell, but only 0.13.2.3 was right.
sudo cabal install wx-0.13.2.3
...and everything has compiled and installed. Then I could install:
sudo cabal install reactive-banana-wx -fbuildExamples
That's no depends on the version of your Glasgow Haskell Compiler or the sort of your Linux.
Haskell package dependencies continue to be a problem but I don't know how to get around this one. My environment:
Ubuntu 10.10, new install
apt-get install ghc6 cabal-install
cabal update && cabal install cabal-install
Then:
cabal install yesod
And I get this:
$ cabal install yesod
cabal: Error: some packages failed to install:
persistent-0.3.1.2 failed during the building phase. The exception was:
ExitFailure 1
yesod-0.6.6 depends on persistent-0.3.1.2 which failed to install.
$ cabal install persistent-0.3.1.2

text-0.10.0.2 was excluded because enumerator-0.4.3.1 requires text ==0.11.*
How do I get yesod installed?
To see more details, add -v (or even -v2 or -v3) and perhaps --dry-run. Also it's useful to see what's currently installed, with ghc-pkg list.
When you upgrade persistent, cabal decides it should also rebuild your existing yesod which depends on it. This triggers a blaze-builder upgrade. blaze-builder requires an older text than enumerator which is also being installed.
http://hackage.haskell.org/package/enumerator claims to support older text versions as well as 0.11. But cabal has been outwitted somehow. The verbose output may tell more, or see if you can help it along with a --constraint or two. Or by first uninstalling some related packages, like yesod. And of course be sure you have done cabal update.
yesod is under heavy development. email michael snoyman (contact info can be found here), he is very responsive to requests
There is a dependency-break. Report this as an error to the author of the package. Consider downloading and installing an older version of enumerator manually, too.
I found some information about a better install process here:
https://github.com/yesodweb/yesod
Look for the section about cabal-src.
I'm in the process of trying it out.
I'll report back, and let people know if it works.
