URL Rewriting : remove folder name from URL - .htaccess

Question

I would like to redirect the user from this: http://www.rudaz.ch/files/brig.html to this http://www.rudaz.ch/brig.html and to every files that the "files" folder contains.
So for I have this:
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/files
RewriteRule (.*) /files/$1 [L]
But it doesn't seems to work. It returns this : Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found)
and also this
Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 500 (Internal Server Error)
for all the js and css files
