What is the best way of using special characters and formatting in a dynamically generated h:commandLink?
I am rendering an equation (e.g. A=π*r2) as a list of h:commandLink items, so that each symbol in the equation can be separately clicked:
JSF:

The question is what the getText method should do when the symbol needs a special character, special mathematical symbol, and/or needs to be a super-script or sub-script?
Here are some specific problems/questions:
(1) How do I use the greek letter π symbol in a CommandLink? If I return π then that is what gets displayed, not the greek symbol
(2) What is the best way to do a superscript in a CommandLink? I could use a CSS style but some people say that is a bad idea, especially when the superscript implies meaning, rather than just presentation, as it does for a number raised to a power.

The answer was obvious in the end: Just replace the value attribute of the h:commandLink with a child h:outputText element that has escape="false" :
JSF:

I have searched and tried but this time I'm really stuck.
I am trying to build a simple datatable (primefaces) where the cell content can be of different types. There is a holder class for each cell content that can hold different entities and I want to use < c:choose> to check and display the right entity in the entity specific way.
The code looks like:

The EL evaluation doesn't work regardless if I try a boolean or String values in the bean (I'm using String value in the code above).
So each time the content is not empty, the output first displays the correct content type from #{content.type} but then together with 'Neither activity or todo'.
I can also say that this data table itself represents a cell content in a parent data table (list of entities per date) that is not visible in this code as I try to isolate the problem.
Could it be that this type of expression cannot be done in a ?

Use JSF rendered tags to do your conditional display logic, it removes it from the DOM completely and makes validations easier.

I want to hide the minus value from the print during formatting in JSF. How can I achieve that.
For Example,
The Value : -340
Need to Display as : 340.00
Not like -340.00 or (340.00)
Is that possible? The current code is like that, but can not hide minus value.

If it's <h:outputText> then you can use arbitrary EL expression as its value, if you're so dissatisfied with getting absolute value while preparing data in your managed bean, as it's rightly proposed by perissf and fareed, like:
value="#{(paymentBill.amount lt 0) ? -paymentBill.amount : paymentBill.amount}"
You can return the absolute value of the amount In the backing bean.
Return Math.abs(amount) instead of amount.

You could either homebrew an EL function which manipulates the column value and returns the desired HTML,
<h:outputText value="#{my:highlight(results.logName, logSearcherBean.query)}" escape="false" />
(note that this is due to escape="false", which is mandatory to present HTML literally, also sensitive to XSS attacks if the logName is a value which is fully controlled by the enduser)

I have some code like the below and it works, but instead of showing just a number, I want to show "number%". Here's what I have:

If I put the "%" sign inside the value property, the converter won't work (I believe because the evaluated result is not just a number), but if I put the "%" sign in other outputtext tag, one line break appears between the number and it. I don't want that.

Set the CSS white-space property of the common parent element to nowrap.
E.g.
<span style="white-space: nowrap;">
<h:outputText value="#{somebean.doubleValue}">
<f:convertNumber maxfractiondigits="2">
</h:outputText>%
</span>
(note: you don't necessarily need <h:outputText> for plain text)
If you are actually using this in a <h:column> (as I would initially guess), you could specify a classname for the <td> by the columnClasses attribute of the <h:dataTable>.
I have a question about outputing a list of objects as a comma separated list in JSF.
Let's say:

Given a List<Person> persons where Person has a name property,
If you're already on Java EE 7 with EL 3.0, then use EL stream API.
#{bean.persons.stream().map(p -> p.name).reduce((p1, p2) -> p1 += ', ' += p2).get()}
If you're not on EL 3.0 yet, but have JSF 2.x at hands, then use Facelets <ui:repeat>.
<ui:repeat value="#{bean.persons}" var="person" varStatus="loop">
#{person.name}#{not loop.last ? ', ' : ''}
</ui:repeat>
Or if you're still on jurassic JSP, use JSTL <c:forEach>.

Or pre-compute the comma-separated string in the managed bean, and obtain it via a getter.
If you can't use varStatus because you're stuck with using JSF 1.2, you can do:
<ui:repeat value="#{listHolder.lst}" var="someObj">#{someObj != listHolder.lst[0] ? ',' : ''}
#{someObj.name}</ui:repeat>
The absence of whitespace around the EL-expressions is deliberate, we don't want a space to appear there in the rendered HTML.
