writing a iiop client in order to dynamically configure a cisco appliance - iiop

My firm is about to purchase a cisco appliance named dcm.
It's only api is a limited snmp or iiop.
I want to create a simple gui that will help my users configure certain fields on the dcm with ease.
I have done this before with snmp but have zero expirience with iiop.
I preffer to implement with either java or python.
I would appreciate if someone can point me in the right direction (java/python, recommended libraries etc.)
BTW i saw a lot of mentions about rmi-iiop but I'm pretty sure it's irrelevant. ( am I right?)

Can Loadrunner with Amazon Load Generators test a site that is not publicly accessible?

I'm a web developer and completely new to Loadrunner suite.
Our client has already provided us with some Loadrunner actions, that I need to run them to test a site that is hosted on the company's intranet that I'm currently working.
The computer I'm using can not handle more than 7 vusers, therefore I was requested to use Amazon EC2 for load generators.
Before I request my company to be charged with Amazon services I need to know, would I be able to test our internal page from my computer exactly as I do with the load generator on my localhost, or the page that will be tested needs to be publicly accessible from the internet?

Please read carefully what James wrote. You said you are a web developer so the task that was given to you is roughly equivalent to "write a new DB access layer".
You didn't mention which protocol you are using but I will assume TruClient (based on the 7 vUsers per machine). I will also assume you are using the latest version of LoadRunner or at least something from the 12.6X family.
1) You already have a solution for AWS out of the box in the form of StormRunner (https://www.microfocus.com/en-us/products/stormrunner-load-agile-cloud-testing/overview). If you want to test if the solution works for you please request a couple of execution hours from the sales team and try it. If your company has a valid license for LoadRunner I don't think this will be an issue.
2) You have a simple integration into the controller application for EC2 and alike. In the controller go to Tools->Manage cloud accounts. If you run a small test the cost should not be too great I assume.
3) If you are a developer, we have a new offering called TruWeb which is a transport level protocol which should be more developer friendly. It will be able to run much more users per machine so you will be able to use it to test on EC2 micro machine (free tier). The caveat is that you will have to write some JavaScript code and not be able to reuse the actions given to you. I hope this will give you some directions.
a) You need training. This is not a discipline that someone is socially promoted to and finds success
b) Expect that it will take at least six months to begin delivering value in this field, longer if you are not working with a mentor
c) This is a question of application communication architecture. Architecture is one of the foundation skills for a performance tester/engineer/architect.
d) It is not recommended that you use the controller as a load generator. It is not recommended that you use just one load generator. Both of which will cause your test to fail an audit from a more mature testing firm. Go with a minimum of three, two for primary load, one for a control set of a single virtual user of each type. Design your tests to allow for the examination of Control timing records compared to the global set to understand if you have an application issue or a load generator issue as part of your test design.
e) You will need to coordinate with your network team for two reasons. One, you may need to open outbound ports (covered in documentation) to allow your controller to communicate with your load generators. Two, you absolutely will have to coordinate a tunnel from the outside internet to your internal applications under test. Expect that security will be paramount only our requests and no other requests through the tunnel. There are many mechanisms to address this, from a custom HTTP header to certificates. Speak with your network security professionals for the setup and configuration which you will be able to implement.
The self paced training for loadrunner is available for download. It takes about three days to go through. This is the absolute minimum before you pick up this tool in anger. Ideally, you would go through training with a certified instructor and be paired with a mentor for a period. The length of time for the mentor is directly related to the number of foundation skills which you bring to the table.

For a start, try using the Quickfix library, either in Java or C++. There are others too, but I have used this library and it is quite extensively used in the financial industry.
It has a well documented API help and there is a lot of help on this library available. You can use two instances of this library as a test environment to test. Forex brokers would not share their code with anybody else, nobody wants to go to jail. All you can get is maybe sample market data from one of the market data providers i.e. Bloomberg, Reuters etc
It is usually best to build your apps as plugins for a more established software such as Metatrader. This will make it easier to get access to real-time data for your app. Metatrader is very well developed and has a large community of traders so it is very easy to find help if you need it. The software is also very well documented which makes it easy to learn how to build the best possible plugin. You can find a list of forex brokers that support MT4 and MT5 here.
Another benefit of building your app as a Metatrader plugin is that it can be used by a large number of different brokers. If you build a standalone app then it will often only work with the forex broker you built it for. If you want to use another broker in the future then you will have to redesign parts of the app.
If you prefer to build a free-standing app then Quickfix is the best option. It is a free open source protocol that works with several different programming languages. There are plenty of online resources that can help you achieve your goals. There are also several companies like Connamara that offer commercial support.
I would recommend that you look and see if you can achieve what you want to achieve with a Metatrader plugin before you put in the effort to build a likely inferior stand-alone app.

Creating a simple mobile agent system

I am looking to create a simple mobile agent system which will deal with 4 tasks, i.e 4 different mobile agents jobs: Database update, meeting scheduling, network services discovery and kernel update.
I have done my research and have seen different frameworks such as Aglet, Jade, agent builder etc. My question is which one should i use? Also i need to setup the base code for it to work, can someone point me to a site or help me to setup the basic functions of the mobile agent?
I've read about tahiti server for the Aglet model. I'm quite confused about how to set up the mobile agent system. Any help would be much appreciated.
I have also tried to it using RMI. I had created a method of type agent, but i couldn't pass it through remote method implementation. I was reading about tcp and udp socket programming. I was thinking may be it would be more fair to do it using socket programming. In this case, would this be called an agent? I was thinking about the server sending datagram packets to multiple clients.
You need to ask yourself why you want to use mobile agents at all. The notion of a mobile agent was popular in the agent research community in the early 90's, but fell out of favour because (i) it wasn't clear what problem it was solving, (ii) the capability to allow arbitrary code to migrate to a particular computer and execute with enough privileges to access local data and services is very open to abuse, and (iii) all of the claimed benefits of mobile agents can actually be achieved though web services (REST or otherwise) and open data formats such as RDF. Consequently, few, if any, mobile agent platforms have been properly maintained since the early experiments.
It also sounds as though you need to be clear which end-user problem you want to solve. Scheduling a meeting and updating my kernel are very different tasks - I'd be very uncomfortable with a program that claims do both. If your interest is in the automation of system maintenance tasks, such as DB tuning and kernel patching, on large networks you might want to look at the SmartFrog project, or read up on autonomic computing.
I use JADE and I agree with the first guy, agent systems usually take alot of overhead to going so if you can avoid it, please do. If however you choose to proceed choose a platform with alot of support and a big user group.
Jade has some neat features like a directory facilitator DF, which works like a yellow pages so other agents don't have to know what agents are running and what services are supplied they can simply inquire by the DF.
Also JADE ContractNetBehaviours help simplify communication.

Linux server performance analytics and load monitoring software

What I am looking specifically for is software thats runs on Linux (CentOS) that can do the following:
Show human readable CPU, Memory, Disk, Apache, MySQL utilization/performance.
Provide historic reports on the above metrics (today, week, month, year etc...)
Provide this data in an easy to view web based report or at least exportable to excel/csv.
I have looked at Cacti and I don't think its really an enterprise solution. I don't care if this is free or paid for software, though open source would be nice I am really just looking for the best solution.
Does anything like this exist for Linux? The problem this company is faced with is we have no way of measuring how the changes we make in our code and server configurations impact overall performance. So when I saw lets do this - then do it, I can't shows the benefits or revert back cause it was a negative in terms of performance. I am not a linux guru, just a developer with some linux skills, but am open to all suggestions. Thanks for reading.
Even though there are lot of open source projects but the main drawback they suffer is that they are away harder to configure. I have some across a free to called SeaLion which is way easier to install and configure. And it has awesome timeline base to representing outputs. Also there are different paid tools line new relic, server density, solar wind which you can also give a look.

Cacti is a simple one. OpenNMS is more complete.
You are not limited to linux, using SNMP you can fetch this data from a remote host and use any NMS you like.
IMHO one of the best "freemium" tools is Zenoss (http://community.zenoss.org/).
The community edition is free. It will do everything you need, and comes with a simple RPM based installation process. It's a lot easier than Cacti or Nagios to setup and use. I would give it a try.
I use munin. I'ts much much simpler to set up than cacti. It's better to compile it yourself than pull it with apt-get (or other) because that way it has more built-in data-gathering scripts.
Basically there is no single dashboard where you can get all reports metrics. There are a range of opensource softwares which and can serve your need.
For server performance many people recommends munin, you will have to learn how to read teh report data. You can also write custom scripts to get certain report parameters of Mysql. Additionally if your server host provides an API, you can then do lot more related to reports in your admin panel.

I want to know how to create a web app to make a telephone call, most likely using VOIP protocol.
What programming languages, both client and server side, do I have to learn?
The primary question you need to answer to get started is are you looking for a computer to computer call or do you want your app to call a telephone number?
Since you specify that you want your "web app to make a call," I suspect you're looking for a way to place automated calls to a user's telephone. If that's the case, you've got a few options.
Install a VoIP server like Asterisk or Freeswitch and write code to have your web app interact with it. For Asterisk, the Adhearsion project can help by allowing you to write Asterisk integrations in Ruby. http://adhearsion.com/
Or you can use a cloud telephony service like Cloudvox or Tropo http://tropo.com (disclosure, I work for Voxeo, the company behind Tropo). These services allow you to use web programming languages and web services to talk to the phone system. You don't need to know anything about Voip to make it happen. A sample Tropo script...

A side benefit to the cloud services is many of them allow your app to run over other communications channels (Tropo does IM and SMS, too).
The third option is to look into VoiceXML, a W3C standard for creating voice apps. Voxeo provides detailed docs and VoiceXML tutorials at http://vxml.org/. With a VoiceXML (sometimes called VXML) application, you can install a VoiceXML server and the associated VoIP bits or you can use a VoiceXML hosting provider. Voxeo provides both a downloadable server and hosting (both are free for developers), or a search for VoiceXML hosting will reveal a large number of options.
The answer to your question really depends on what you want to do with it. Here are 2 examples of how I have gone about it:
I developed the software for Go2Call.Com (now owned by Deltathree), and it was used for PC-to-Phone calling. In Go2Call's case, it was a Java applet for the dialer frontend that called a Windows DLL written in C++. From there, it spoke a proprietary protocol to talk to the servers which in turn sent the call to regular landlines.
A few years later, I wrote a web-based (ActiveX control) that would allow PC-to-PC or PC-to-Phone calling, and it used the standard H.323 protocol.
I would recommend starting out by figuring out what your end goal is and then looking up the necessary protocols and technologies to accomplish it.
For PC-to-PC, you can do whatever you want if both people use your software. In that case, you can figure out how VOIP works (including compression codecs, etc.) and implement it however you want.
For PC-to-Phone or when you want to call someone else's software, I'd recommend SIP since it's probably the most popular protocol. H.323 is still prevalent, but SIP seems to be taking over.
Sorry this doesn't probably tell you everything, but there's a lot to it. Hopefully, this will get you started in the right direction.
Update: Since you mentioned PC-to-PC, Packetizer has a list of standards and quite a bit of info I used way back when I did a lot of VoIP programming.
As far as books go, the books I've seen so far aren't programming-related but more about using VoIP software and installing VoIP networks.

On the server side, you'd probably link it up with an SIP solution in any language. Asterisk comes to mind, although it may be a bit overkill depending on whether you really wanted a full-blown SIP solution or not.

As for the language you have to learn, well what languages have you learned already? Which languages have you developed web apps with? This determines your choice of language. Using components like those listed above take some of the legwork out, but still will require probably vbscript or javascript coding client side, and those that are activeX will only work on Internet Explorer webbrowsers.
If you have no experience then you need to look seriously at what you are trying to do, why, how much time and effort you can and are willing to put in.
