Apache Karaf Deploying .War File - jsf

My purpose is to run a JSF application on OSGI Framework. So, I am trying to deploy a WAR file to a servlet container for OSGi web applications, called PAX-WEB. I have a proper working JSF implementation working on WildFly 8.0 application server. I succesfully created OSGi-ified WAR file from this application. When I try to deploy it into PAX-WEB using Maven the following error occurs:
missing requirement: javax.servlet.annotation
I have these JARs in /lib folder of my application: jsf-api-2.1.7, jsf-impl-2.1.7, jsp-api-2.1, jstl-1.2. When I add javax.servlet-api-3.0.1.jar to my WAR file and re-deploy it, this time the following error occurs:
javax.faces.webapp.FacesServlet cannot be cast to javax.servlet.Servlet
With this error, I can run my JSF page, but it is not displaying JSF tags.

You're mixing two issues here.
One, your framework setup is missing the servlet classes. So in that case I propose to use the pax-web-jetty-bundle. It's an uber bundle and also contains and exports the servlet classes. In that case make sure you don't have the servlet jars in your framework setup available. Btw. taking a look at the samples and Integration tests of Pax Web itself helps already to understand which libraries are needed.
The second issue you are facing is an issue of adding the servlet classes to the war, this is per OSGi and servlet spec forbidden to do.
So without any further knowledge of your scenario you might be better of with using the Apache Karaf server (it uses Pax Web), cause there all infrastructure bundles are already included and known to work together.

Can a jetty 5 custom classloader exclude specific jar files in a war?

I've got a large code base that currently runs on JSF 1.1 on embedded Jetty 5.1.14 server (Servlet 2.4). I've managed to get a JSF 2.0.9 app running on this version of Jetty even though I'd expected to require servlet 2.5, and I add EL 2.1.2 & the JSF jar to WEB-INF/lib. This works on a jetty config that excludes JSF 1.1.
The production environment consists of a large number of war and jar files on a single server instance.
JSF 1.1 is currently in the server ext/lib folder, and in a single war file I'd like to include the JSF 2 jar in the WEB-INF/lib. This is not possible as the server JSF version will load first and cause classpath pollution.
However would it be possible to eliminate the JSF 1.1 jar loading in just the one war file with a custom classloader? The documentation seems to cater for the case of adding paths to the classpath rather than excluding things. I wasn't clear whether it's loaded in the context of the server as a whole or just the war.
A little more information: Another potential solution is to simply upgrade to Jetty 8 and JSF 2.1+. Apart from convincing management that this is a good idea, we use an old WebMethods7 version, this has a graphical layout tool that produces some XML that is translated by a Component Application Framework, which uses the JSF APIs to generate content (so only a very few JSPs). This would simply be a case of seeing if it works, and if not having a total rethink because of the need to keep supporting this WebMethods "code".
The main goal here is to ultimately run up to date software although not necessarily in one step.
Jetty5 is incredibly old at this point and I would recommend working on the update to jetty8, or waiting a couple of months and making the jump to jetty9 which we are currently releasing milestones for. Changes in the newer jvm's since then alone are enough reason to update your jetty container.
I don't know if this approach was supported in jetty5 or not, but in jetty6 we have ability on the webapp context to modify the classes that are exposed to the context via system and server classes. If those hooks exists then you should be able to tweak that specific context to not expose the classes in the jar in ext/lib.

Dynamic Web Project with Seam Faces

I tried to start a new dynamic Web Project with Seam-Faces(Eclipse). I created a new JSF-Facility and addeed all the jar-Files from the official Seam-Faces homepage. When i try to create a dynamic web project eclipse says that the following File ist not found:
javax.faces.FactoryFinder
What i am doing wrong ? Is ist possible to use Seam-Faces without the Seam-Framework ?
There is not a Seam Framework anymore. Seam 3 is a bunch of reusable CDI extensions that you could use. The best way to start with Seam3 modules is to use maven for library management. More info about how to configure seam-faces dependencies can be found here.
For the exception you're facing make sure there are no jsf jars in WEB-INF\lib in case you're using a Java EE server like JBoss AS or Glassfish. For more info look here.

Xerces error: org.apache.xerces.impl.dv.dtd.DTDDVFactoryImpl

I'm developing a web application using JSF 2.0, NetBeans 6.9.1, GlassFish Server 3.1, mojarra 2.0.3, and JasperReports 3.7.6. Included in my project library is the jar file "xerces-2.8.0.jar". This file was imported as part of the JasperReports jar file library. Whenever I try to deploy, run, or debug my project through NetBeans, I receive this error:
java.lang.Exception: java.lang.IllegalStateException: ContainerBase.addChild: start: org.apache.catalina.LifecycleException: com.sun.faces.config.ConfigurationException: CONFIGURATION FAILED! DTD factory class org.apache.xerces.impl.dv.dtd.DTDDVFactoryImpl does not extend from DTDDVFactory.
After any change in my project my build fails, and I receive the above error, when I try to deploy, run, or debug it. I have to restart the server and run/debug a second time. I've searched the internet and cannot find a solution to this problem. I've looked at the jar file in question, and and DTDDVFactoryImpl does indeed extend from DTDDVFactory - I don't know why I'm receiving this error. While I can eventually get my project running, it would be much nicer if I wasn't receiving this error.
Can anyone please tell me how I can fix this? Do I need to remove this file from my project library? Do I need to update this file with a newer version/older version?
If you provide your own xerces.jar, you have to do that through the Endorsed Standards Override Mechanism (java -Djava.endorsed.dirs=/path/to/xerces.jar), you are not allowed to just add it on the classpath (and will sooner or later run into trouble if you do). Let me explain.
JAXP is the Java API for XML Processing. The creation of JAXP objects (like parsers, XSLT transfomers, DOM Documents) is done through the factory/factory-method pattern so you can plugin a new JAXP implementation (it has to be newer than the one provided in your JRE). Xerces provides (part of) a JAXP implementation and contains endorsed standards (an endorsed standard is a Java API defined through a standards process other than the Java Community Process, see the Endorsed Standards Override Mechanism). You'll run in all kinds of troubles if you don't use the ESOM.
I got this error when using Selenium with Glassfish. I got around it by copying XML jars (xerces-*, xalan-*, xml-apis*, serialize*) from selenium/libs/ to $AS_HOME/lib/endorsed (for Glassfish 2) or to $AS_HOME/glassfish/lib/endorsed for Glassfish 4.

tomahawk jar not getting loaded weblogic portal 10.3

I have made a jsf 1.1 portlet in weblogic 10.3, but in one scenario I need tomahawk library help. I just dropped the jar file and supporting ones in lib folder in WEB-INF in my portal application, but when I hit the url it gives me error of NoClassdef..... exception for classes in tomahawk jar and jsp compilation fails.
I am new to weblogic, I'll really appreciate if someoe can suggest what I might be doing wrong.
The setup is that whole application goes as ear. Ear contains app-inf and weblogic specific xml files, main portal web application goes as war inside this ear. I am using workshop that ships with weblogic portal 10.3. Well this project was migrated from weblogic portal 9.3.
Note: I dont want to but this jar in domain/lib, when I did so I dont know why it loaded my application and all the class defined in servlet startup with load-on-startups got fired well before time and none of the classes were found by server.
Jsf libraries currently used are in shared mode.
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError means the runtime version of the class in the classpath is not the same as that at compile time.
Note: it's not a ClassNotFoundException.
Your problem is in fact multiple versions of the class being found.
Also, JSF 1.2 libraries are bundled with Weblogic server, so it can cause this exception if one of those classes is again added into the WEB-INF/lib. Which is the exact class on which the error is thrown, do you have multiple versions of Tomahawk lying around in WEB-INF and domain/lib?
Remove the extras and keep one in WEB-INF/lib only.
Update:
The docs state that Separate JSF 1.2 and JSTL 1.2 JAR files and implementation JAR files are also provided in the WL_HOME/server/lib/api.jar file.
Check for that class javax/faces/webapp/UIComponentELTag in this jar.
I still think you should use the weblogic.xml setting to force the WEB-INF/lib class to get loaded in preference to that in server/lib with
<container-descriptor>
<prefer-web-inf-classes>true</prefer-web-inf-classes>
</container-descriptor>
Being new to weblogic and infrastructure I messed up with different versions. Figured out it was just because of incompatible jars.

Websphere 7 and JSF 1.2 - Application was not properly initialized at startup, could not find Factory

JSF 1.1 and websphere 6.1 was working properly in my case. Once I deployed that to a websphere 7 server, I received the following error -

Not sure what it means, I have enabled JSF1.2 as project facet in the RAD but still keep getting the above error message and none of my jsf files are working.

There is no jsf impl in among these directories. Now I am more confused as the original lib should be present under c:\IBM\SDP\runtimes\base_v7\plugins !!
This is a typical error when there are multiple different versioned JSF libraries in the classpath. Websphere ships with builtin JSF libraries. If you'd like to use the webapp-supplied JSF libraries, then you need to set the classloading policy to module after deploying. This usually defaults to application which means that the webapp libraries are loaded by the main classloader. The main classloader may happen to have loaded the JSF API library. When its version is different from the JSF IMPL library in the webapp, then you may receive this kind of errors.
Update to help with nailing down the root cause better here are 2 suggestions:
You can reveal all used classpath roots on the local disk file system as follows:

Execute this in ServletContextListener#contextInitialized() or so.
(eventually after finding that out), install WinRAR, associate it with JAR file type and use its file-search facility to search for a JSF specific file like FacesContext.class and FacesContextImpl.class so that you can find all JAR's which contains the JSF API/impl. You can find out the exact JSF version by extracting the JAR and reading the MANIFEST file.
You need to keep the JSF JAR's (icu4j.jar and jsf-ibm.jar if you are using IBM's component library) in your /WEB-INF/lib folder.
