filling available space inside a vertical layout - layout

in my vaadin project i have a vertical layout (with the height 100%), with two other vertical layouts inside. the fist one has a fixed height, while the second one should fill the remaining space of the browser-window. it will have a bigger height than the remaining space and has an overflow-y: scroll css-attribute. i tried this with the method setExpandRatio but did not work (the height was often more than the remaining space). can i achieve this just with vaadin, or do i have to use javascript for this?

So if i've understood right you would like to have a first area with fixed height and a second area that could be bigger than remaining height so it needs to scroll.
If that's the case, here's the layout

VerticalLayout"1" (width 100%, height fixed): fill this layout with your fixed height content
Panel (sizeFull + setExpandRation on VerticalLayoutMain to 1)
VerticalLayout"2" (width100%, heightUndefined): fill this layout with your other content

AndroidPlot - Labels and text

I am a non-developer product manager for an application built in both Android and iOS. We have a bar graph in iOS that provides text for the content of the graph. It displays Totals for each bar, and percentages for each segment of each bar.
In Android, using AndroidPlot (so I understand) we just display the bars with different color segments and no percent totals or totals. I am told by the developer that we can't show more.

Is it possible to use AndroidPlot to emulate this iOS chart or at least represent to same information to the end user?
Your developer is more or less correct but you have options. Androidplot's BarRenderer by default provides only an optional label at the top of each bar, which in your iOS images is occupied by the "available", "new", "used" and "rent" label. That label appears to be unused in your Android screenshot so one option would be to utilize those labels do display your totals.
As far as exactly matching the iOS implementation with Androidplot, the missing piece is the ability to add additional labels horizontally and vertically along the side of each bar. You can extend BarRenderer to do this by overriding it's onRender(...) method. Here's a link for your developer that shows where in the code he'll want to modify onRender(...).
I'd suggest these modifications to add the vertical labels:
Invoke Canvas.save(Canvas.ALL_SAVE_FLAG) to store the default orientation of the Canvas.
Use Canvas.translate(leftX, bottom) to center on the bottom left point of the bar
Rotate the Canvas 90 degrees using Canvas.rotate(90) to enable vertical text drawing
Draw whatever text is needed along the side of the plot; 0,0 now corresponds to the bottom left corner of the bar so start there when invoking canvas.drawText(x,y).
Invoke Canvas.restore() to restore the canvas' original orientation.
After implementing the above, adding horizontal "%" labels should be self evident but if you run into trouble feel free to ask more questions along the way.

Here's a very basic implementation of the above. First the drawVerticalText method:

Personally, I don't care for the fixed y-position of these vertical labels and would prefer them to float along the upper part of the bars. To accomplish this I modify my invocation of drawVerticalText(...) to look like this:

How to get the exact actual parents width or height with an absolute positioning for childs?

Am creating elements and there childs dynamically, with different absolute positions, the childs have a left, top, width and height properties, the problem is whatever I tried, the parents width and height is always 0. Check this fiddle.

Or I have to create a function that goes over all the childs & childs of childs, check the minimum left, top, then included the width & height of childs... that might take me days? or there's magical JavaScript or jQuery plugin that gives you that?
The problem is with your child' absolute position. whenever child uses absolute position, it will not fill the parent. So either don't use absolute positioning or either give the parents a fixed width

Efficient way of scaling hundreds of QGraphicItems

I have a zoomable QGraphicsView with scene that contains hundreds (and even thousands) of datapoints. The points are represented by QGraphicsEllipseItems and collected into a QGraphicsItemGroup. When the view is zoomed in to I want datapoints to stay at a constant size (i.e., the distances between neigbouring points increase but the sizes stay the same). Right now I achieve this by running this code every time the user zooms in:

This code works. The problem is that it is quite slow (without the compensatory scaling zooming in/out works very smoothly). I tried turning off antialiasing for the view but it makes things look pretty ugly. Is there anything else that I can do to make the processing/redrawing faster?
In the constructor of the QGraphicsItem:
setFlag(ItemIgnoresTransformations);
When you zoom, the item will remain the same size, and you won't have to manually scale it.

How to get screen height in LWUIT out of height reserved for MenuBar and TitleBar?

I want to get the height and width of the screen which I could draw objects on. It's the space which is other than the the MenuBar (the footer containing commands) and other than the TitleBar.
TIP: I know that Display.getInstance().getDisplayHeight() returns the height of the screen but this is for the full sceen. So how could I, at least, know the height of the MenuBar and TitleBar to substract them from this height ?
I found the answer for those who are interested:
To get the height of TitleBar: Form.getTitleComponent().getPreferredH()
To get the height of AddressBar: Form.getSoftButton(0).getParent().getPreferredH()
So the answer of my question is:
Display.getInstance().getDisplayHeight()

uiscrollview for scrolling a very, very tall page

From top to bottom I have UIView, UIScrollView, a UIImage, a UILabel, a UITextView and a UIButton.
My reason behind the top-most UIScrollView was so the whole vertical content would scroll.
What I really need a substitute for is the UITextView (5th down) because the UITextView is a subclass of UIScrollView. And this substitute must accomodate the very tall column of formatted text.
What I don't want is a scrollable object in the middle of the page; I want the whole page to be scrollable.
One more thing ... please note there's a button immediately below this tall column of text.

The entire UIView contains a UILabel, a UIImage, a UITextView and
a UIButton at the very bottom.
The goal here was to make this entire content scrollable.

using IB, un-check "Scrolling Enabled" for the UITextView
because it's a concrete type of UIScrollView
using IB, drag a UIScrollView to the UIView and match sizes and
insure that the UIScrollView encloses all sub-views
make the UITextView height = its contentSize.height
move the UIButton to below this UITextView
and then, thanks to iphonedevsdk.com:
adjust the contentSize.height of the top-most UIScrollview to
include the height of the re-positioned UIButton

Your question is not very specific, but I think you're asking how to make a text view that does not scroll, and expands to fit the text. You can do this with UILabel, but it's a multi-step process. The same will work for UITextView if you disable scrolling and set the contentSize to match the frame dimensions.
