I have a little problem with htaccess redirection, I have an issue which i can't figure out.
www.old.com/sub should direct to: www.new.com/page/
BUT
all the subpages of www.old.com/sub (www.old.com/sub/1, www.old.com/sub/2), should redirect to www.new.com/category/1, www.new.com/category/2 etc. (insted of page)
But how?
What I tried (i assumed this should work, but it didn't):
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^sub/$ http://www.new.com/page/ [R=301,L]
RewriteRule ^sub(/.*)?$ http://www.new.com/category/$1 [R=301,L]
note; it is part of a large list of redirections, so it should not affect other redirections in this htaccess file.
That work with:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^sub/?$ http://www.new.com/page/ [R=301,L]
RewriteRule ^sub/(\d+)/?$ http://www.new.com/category/$1 [R=301,L]
You can change (\d+) to (.+) if you do not use numbers only after sub/

You cannot check against the query string in a rewrite rule. You need rewrite conditions for that:
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} date=([^&]+)&p=(.+)
RewriteRule ^archive/? /archive/%1/%2?

If you want to actually redirect just add [R=301,L] to the end of the RewriteRule.
However, looking at the above I suspect you have your script sitting listening at /archive/index.php?data=foo&p=bar but want URLs to be like /archive/date/p, ie pretty.
This is actually a very common misconception about how htaccess URL rewrites work when you first get into them.
RewriteRules will mask or redirect URLs for you but they cannot change the underlying location a script is located at and thus the address used to pass it information.
In other words - you can mask /archive/index.php?data=foo&p=bar as /archive/date/p so that requests made to /archive/date/p resolve to /archive/index.php?data=foo&p=bar, but you cannot make it so that if you enter /archive/index.php?data=foo&p=bar as URL you have the URL change to /archive/date/p while still serving content from /archive/date/p. It has to be either or.
If this all sounds about right my advice would be as follows:
First, put your code into a different file, say /archive/script.php.
Next add the following to your htaccess:
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} date=([^&]+)&p=(.+)
RewriteRule ^archive/? /archive/%1/%2? [R=301,L]
RewriteRule ^archive/([^/]+)/([^/]+) /archive/script.php?date=$1&p=$2
Note that the first two lines are the same as before, but now there is a new line that looks for the masked URL format of /archive/date/p and sends it off to the actual script, which is handled by the new RewriteRule.

I'm struggling with an Apache rewriterule. I need to do the following:
Redirect permanently:

to
http://domain.com/siteid/includes/themes/siteid/swfs/viewer/data/settings.xml?prevent_cache=4760
I've got the code below, it works without the url parameters but I can't seem to get it to work with parameters. Am i missing something?
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^prevent_cache=([0-9]*)$
RewriteRule ^/folder/viewer/data/settings.xml$ http://domain.com/siteid/includes/themes/siteid/swfs/viewer/data/settings.xml [R=301,L]

The only error I can see, is the leading slash / in the RewriteRule pattern. This should be
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^prevent_cache=[0-9]*$
RewriteRule ^folder/viewer/data/settings.xml$ /siteid/includes/themes/siteid/swfs/viewer/data/settings.xml [R,L]
You don't need to append the query string to the substitution URL, because this is done autmoatically.
When everything works as you expect, you can change R to R=301. Never test with 301 enabled, see this answer Tips for debugging .htaccess rewrite rules for details.

I know this sounds like so many other questions here, but I can't seem to find the answer.
Say you are on:
www.domain.com/folderA/folder2/folder3/
I want that to redirect to:
www.domain.com/folderB/folder2/folder3/
So the whole structure stays the same.. it just redirects.
Now so far I have:

But when I use that, it'll just do
www.domain.com/folderB/folderA/folder2/folder3/
What am I doing wrong? How do I get rid of that folderA?
The pattern ^(.*)$ includes also the prefix folderA. You must specify folderA explicitly in the pattern and capture only the latter part in the RewriteRule. Then you can drop the RewriteCond

I would like to rewrite URL's with htaccess to better readable URL's and use the $_GET variable in PHP
I sometimes make use of a subdomain so it has to work with and without. Also are the variables not necessary in the url. I take a maximum of 3 variables in the URL
the URL sub.mydomain.com/page/a/1/b/2/c/3 should lead to sub.mydomain.com/page.php?a=1&b=2&c=3 and the url sub.mydomain.com/a/1/b/2/c/3 should lead to sub.mydomain.com/index.php?a=1&b=2&c=3 where $_GET['a'] = 1

When using RewriteRule, you don't include the domain name in the line. Also, make sure you turn on the RewriteEngine first. Like this:

The first line will rewrite sub.mydomain.com/a/1 to sub.mydomain.com/page.php?a=1, the second rewrites sub.mydomain.com/a/1/b/2 to sub.mydomain.com/page.php?a=1&b=2, and so on.
I have a few mod_rewrite rules in my htaccess files to redirect inexistent pages to a default page, like this:

The rules are working, but they're kinda verbose. Is there any trick to compact the rules? The difference between the first two is just the end slash, and so is for the last two.

or maybe you could even redirect all url starting with category1/*
