I am running Linux Mint in my laptop. I made some modifications and I couldn't login in linux enviroment. I boot in live cd (Linux Mint) and I recover my important files from desktop.
I had some important files in virtual machine. I install virtual box in live cd and when I double click in file.vbox it appears the message:
Failed to open virtual machine located in /media/mint/home/xxx/VirtualBox VMs/file2/file.vbox.
A differencing image of snapshot {xxxxxxxxxxxxxx} could not be found. Could not find an open hard disk with UUID {xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx}.
I try also to "create new virtual machine" and then choose "use an existing virtual hard drive" and choose the snapshot but it pop up another message:
Failed to open the hard disk file /media/mint/home/xxx/VirtualBox VMs/file2/file.vbox.
Parent medium with UUID {xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx} of the medium '/media/mint/home/xxx/VirtualBox VMs/file2/file.vbox./Snapshots/{xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx}.vdi' is not found in the media registry ('/home/mint/.config/VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml').
Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: Medium
Interface: IMedium {xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx}
Callee: IVirtualBox {xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx}
Callee RC: VBOX_E_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND (xxxxxxxxxxx)
Can anyone help me to recover my files from virtual box boot in live cd?
Hy i got a same error on a different Issue.
How i fixed it:
backup your your VirtualMachine.vbox file.
open your yourVirtualMachine.vbox file with an editor such as Notepad++
search through the vbox file for your missing UUID e.g. 36bbf5bd-3a5e-48ab-80d6-6a2952788fdc
you should find a Section with Tags like this:
delete the whole section beginning by <AttachedDevice> and ending by </AttachedDevice> (if you have a backup of your vbox file)
save your edited file
start your VirtualBox; you should be able to import your virtual machine with this vbox file
edit your imported VM
open the tab "storage" in edit window
9.1) add a new hard disk (your existing VM file e.g. vdi, vmdk) to IDE- or SATA-Controller
Hopefully, you should be able to start your VM

I'm working on a Linux mint virtualbox image hosted on Windows 10 where I accidentally deleted the /etc/share directory and subdirectories.
Now my Image can't boot and I have sensitive data that I want to recover.
How can I do so?
First - switch the VM off and don't turn it off.
If you made a backup or taken a snapshot of the VM's image just use it to restore the VM. Create a new Linux VM with the new disk, and use the copied image os the additional one from which you will be recovering data. Don't ever try to recover deleted files/folders to the same drive or even use it as a drive from which the system boots up. Here are some general tips of what to do and what do not when you loose the data.
Otherwise it's very hard to recover any data from that image - it all depends whether you made some other changes afterward or just switched the VM off (which would be the best option). If you made some changes (wrote some data to the disk after deleting /etc/share then you can still try to recover it but if you have the data stored in some other locations - don't waste your time.
I' won't be copying the exact process from other pages but here are some usefull links; the tool that's mostly used in such cases is called testdisk.

i want your help to find how can i recover my parrot os system. I use parrot os alongwith windows. I have 4gb of ram so i tried to make a swap file in parrot os . I created the swap file and put swappiness=10 in system.conf . But when i tried to reboot. I shows an error. enter image description here
I tried many times to start it nut i failed.
Here is the error when i try to start it
Reloading system manager configuration Starting default target
You are in emergency mode. After logging in, type "journalctl -xb" to view system logs, "systemctl reboot" to reboot, "systemctl default" or "exit" to boot into default mode.
Cannot open access to console, the root account is locked. See sulogin(8) man page for more details.
Press Enter to continue.
When i go to recovery mode it show failed to load /swap
image of error recovery error

Get a Linux live-CD USB stick.
Boot up with live CD, mount your system root path(should be somewhere at /dev/) to /mnt, then you need to check /etc/fstab file, remove /swap item inside.
After that follow Arch - swap to set-up swap partition properly.

Cannot connect the virtual device sata0:1 because no corresponding device is available on the host.
The error pops up when I enable the host/guest share and map the drive. I have installed the VMware Tools, etc.
I tried to delete and then add back the the sata drive to VM Player, but it did not help.
I am using VM Player 12.5.5 on Win10 Pro Host, and Ubuntu 16.04 Desktop.
Well, I just uncheck to connect automatically, from VM settings, then I switch from 'Use pshysical drive' to ISO path. after reboot I didn't seen the error
Or, just remove cv/dvd drive from the serting of the machine
I don't really know what is the cause of the issue. I do not have a CD/DVD drive on my host at all, so I don't know what SATA drive it is trying to connect, and why.
However, the error gives me an option of
Don't try connect next time
And, by selecting yes, the error goes away next time. Also, I removed the CD/DVD drive form the configuration.
Also my share folder host/guest was always working fine.
I solved this issue by following these steps
Shut down the virtual machine
Go to the top menu of the VMWare Fusion hypervisor
In the submenu "Virtual Machine", choose "Settings", then, under "Removable Devices", choose "CD/DVD (SATA)"
Choose the downloaded ISO image (the ISO that you downloaded that contains the OS) from the dropdown menu
Click "Connect CD/DVD Drive"
Restart the virtual machine
Well. I think..
Check if you setup "fstab" for mount /dev/sr0(ex. CD-ROM ..)
If you setup that..
A. Just check.."connected"... In "Virtual Machine Settings"
B. Reboot you VM
All Done.
if you use Hard Disk (SATA)
You must Remover DVD/CD

I have enabled developer mode and installed Bash on Ubuntu on Windows.
My home directory can be found under %localappdata%\Lxss\home\<ubuntu.username>\, i have created a sub-directory called Pictures such that the full path should be
on windows: C:\Users\<windows.username>\AppData\Local\lxss\home\<ubuntu.username>\Pictures
on bash: /home/<ubuntu.username>/Pictures
if i create a file from bash using the command touch hello.txt i can freely see this file in the windows UI and copy it to my Desktop. However, if i create a new text file from the windows UI and save it in C:\Users\<windows.username>\AppData\Local\lxss\home\<ubuntu.username>\Pictures, even if i restart bash or windows, the file is not visible when i do ls -l.
Why can't bash see files created from the Windows side in it's own home directory?
EDIT Using /mnt/c is not a solution, i am trying to understand why it doesn't see those files and if there is a remedy to that so that it will be able to see UI created files, rather than trying to use the terminal to copy-paste or move files over.
You should be able to access your windows system under the /mnt directory. For example inside of bash, use this to get to your pictures directory:
cd /mnt/c/Users/<windows.username>/Pictures
You should only access Linux files system (those located in lxss folder) from inside WSL; DO NOT create/modify any files in lxss folder in Windows - it's dangerous and WSL will not see these files.
Files can be shared between WSL and Windows, though; put the file outside of lxss folder. You can access them via drvFS (/mnt) such as /mnt/c/Users/yourusername/files within WSL. These files stay synced between WSL and Windows.
For details and why, see:

I have a Virtual Machine, and I want to share some files with my computer. But I don't know how to access them.
In the settings of my VM, I added the repository that I want to share. After that I started my VM and I think that I have to use the "mount" command. I also think that the repository that I want is in /dev but I don't know which file after that.
This is the command that I think I have to use :
mount -t vfat /dev/something /media/sf-Documents
Can someone help me and tell me how I have to do to get the content of my folder on my computer please ?
Usually, it is sufficient to:
Install the Guest Additions
Enter the Settings -> Shared folders menu
Click on the "+" icon
Select "automatic mount"
Reboot the machine
You'll find the shared folder under the /media directory
This procedure is known to not work for some versions of the Guest Additions. In case, try a different version of VirtualBox (e.g., switch from 5 to the more stable 4 version).
At first, to share folder between Ubuntu machines: choose folder -> right click -> folder sharing(or in file Properties). You can access files on a remote computer using SSH: Install openssh-server on a computer you want to connect to
