So I need the urls to look like this
www.mydomain.com/about
here is my current HTACCESS code

I think the problem is arising in the removing php area. I think its removing the .php and rewriting the url as mydomain.com/about while at the same time, the "add www header" rule is forcing the www in. How can this be fixed?

I have a site with a big .htaccess with a lot of dynamic rules, everything works fine, but unfortunately, Google is duplicating my URLs, considering the same URL with trailing slash and without... I will paste the code of my .htaccess if someone could help me to enforce adding the trailing slash, without generating a 301 loop.

I tried to add this rule, but it's generating a 301 loop:
## Adding a trailing slash
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule [^/]$ %{REQUEST_URI}/ [L,R=301]
UPDATED Question
After using Anubhava's rules everything works fine without any 301 loopings, the problem is when the request comes without the trailing slash... because now it's generating one unnecessary 301 to enforce the trailing slash, I need to find a way to do it with only one redirect...
Some prints to explain what's going on:
###FIRST JUMP - THE REQUESTED URL
###SECOND JUMP
###LAST JUMP
Instead of this, I need to do one redirect directly to the URL with: https + www + trailing slash
FINAL UPDATE
Ok I found a solution... using page rules in Cloudflare / removing the enforce https and www from the local file (.htaccess) and changing the rules to add a trailing slash to:
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^(.*)([^/])$ /$1$2/ [L,R=301]
The final .htaccess looked like this:
Options -MultiViews
RewriteEngine On
# Adding a trailing slash
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^(.*)([^/])$ /$1$2/ [L,R=301]
# external redirect rule to remove /artigos/ from URLs
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} \s/artigos/(\S*)\sHTTP [NC]
RewriteRule ^ /%1 [L,R=301]
# Remove .php extension externally
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} \s/+(.+?)\.php[\s?] [NC]
RewriteRule ^ /%1/ [R=301,NE,L]
# internal rewrite from root to /artigos/
RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/artigos/$1.php -f
RewriteRule ^([\w-]+)/?$ artigos/$1.php [L]
# handle .php extension internally
RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/$1.php -f
RewriteRule ^(.+?)/?$ $1.php [L]
By doing this I managed to avoid the extra redirect ;)
You have a massive .htaccess. I will try to combine and merge few rules to shorten the length and also handle adding slash removal:
Options -MultiViews
RewriteEngine On
## Adding a trailing slash
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule [^/]$ https://www.avantitecnologiati.com.br%{REQUEST_URI}/ [L,R=301,NE]
## add www and turn on https in same rule
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\. [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(?:www\.)?(.+)$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^ https://www.%1%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L,NE]
# external redirect rule to remove /unidades/pagina_agencia/ from URLs
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} \s/+(?:artigos|unidades/pagina_(?:agencia|locker|estado|cidade|bairro))/(\S*)\sHTTP [NC]
RewriteRule ^ /%1 [L,R=301,NE]
# Remove .php extension externally
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} \s/+(.+?)\.php[\s?] [NC]
RewriteRule ^ /%1/ [R=301,NE,L]
# internal rewrite from root to /artigos/
RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/artigos/$1.php -f
RewriteRule ^([\w-]+)/?$ artigos/$1.php [L]
RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/unidades/pagina_agencia/$1.php -f
RewriteRule ^([\w-]+)/?$ unidades/pagina_agencia/$1.php [L]
RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/unidades/pagina_locker/$1.php -f
RewriteRule ^([\w-]+)/?$ unidades/pagina_locker/$1.php [L]
RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/unidades/pagina_estado/$1.php -f
RewriteRule ^([\w-]+)/?$ unidades/pagina_estado/$1.php [L]
RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/unidades/pagina_cidade/$1.php -f
RewriteRule ^([\w-]+)/?$ unidades/pagina_cidade/$1.php [L]
RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/unidades/pagina_bairro/$1.php -f
RewriteRule ^([\w-]+)/?$ unidades/pagina_bairro/$1.php [L]
# handle .php extension internally
RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/$1.php -f
RewriteRule ^(.+?)/?$ $1.php [L]
Make sure to use a different browser or remove cache data from your browser to test this rule to avoid old cache.
With your shown samples, attempts please try following .htaccess rules file. Apart from fix of trailing slashes I have clubbed 4 rules into 1 Rule.
Make sure to clear your browser cache before testing your URLs.

I am trying to redirect my website from http to https using .htaccess file. The error I am getting is: website.com redirected you too many times.
Here is my htaccess file:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
## hide .php extension snippet
# To externally redirect /dir/foo.php to /dir/foo
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,}\s([^.]+)\.php [NC]
RewriteRule ^ %1/ [R,L]
# To internally forward /dir/foo to /dir/foo.php
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}.php -f
RewriteRule ^(.*?)/?$ $1.php [L]
# add a trailing slash
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !/$
RewriteRule . %{REQUEST_URI}/ [L,R=301]
The above works fine and does what it needs to do. The problem comes from the following:
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} 80
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://website.com/$1 [R,L]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.website.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://website.com/$1 [L,R=301]
I have put "website.com" instead of my own domain in the example above.
I used this :
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301,NE]
instead of:
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} 80
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://website.com/$1 [R,L]
this fixed my problem
I am using this code to redirect to www and https, and it is working. it should be placed first in the .htaccess file. Errors with redirections can take some time to correct, redirections is cached for some time.
# BEGIN Custom redirect
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\. [NC]
RewriteRule ^ https://www.%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]
RewriteCond %{HTTP:X-Forwarded-Proto} !https
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule ^ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]
# END Custom redirect
You might want something like this:
# BEGIN Custom redirect
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\. [NC]
RewriteRule ^ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]
RewriteCond %{HTTP:X-Forwarded-Proto} !https
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule ^ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]
# END Custom redirect
I have multiple domains that point to the same folder on my server. The code in index.php page recognizes which domain is accessing it and shows different content for each domain.
Now I want that www.domain-a.com\sitemap.xml opens /sitemap-a.xml so that each domain has its own sitemap.
I use the following rule in my .htaccess file:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^.*domain-a\.com$
RewriteRule ^sitemap.xml$ sitemap-a.xml [NC]
However, if I access www.domain-a.com\sitemap.xml then the content from the file /sitemap.xml is shown instead of the file sitemap-a.xml.
Is the redirecting rule wrong? If so, how can I fix it?
I am using Laravel. This is the full .htaccess file:
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
<IfModule mod_negotiation.c>
Options -MultiViews -Indexes
</IfModule>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^.*domain-a\.com$
RewriteRule ^sitemap.xml$ sitemap-a.xml [NC]
# browser request: .php to non-php
# https://stackoverflow.com/questions/13222850/redirect-php-urls-to-urls-without-extension
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9}\ /([^\ ]+)\.php
RewriteRule ^/?(.*)\.php$ /$1 [L,R=301]
# Now, rewrite any request to the wrong domain to use www.
# [NC] is a case-insensitive match
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\. [NC]
RewriteRule .* https://www.%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
# First rewrite to HTTPS:
# Don't put www. here. If it is already there it will be included, if not
# the subsequent rule will catch it.
RewriteRule .* https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]
# Handle Authorization Header
RewriteCond %{HTTP:Authorization} .
RewriteRule .* - [E=HTTP_AUTHORIZATION:%{HTTP:Authorization}]
# Redirect Trailing Slashes If Not A Folder...
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} (.+)/$
RewriteRule ^ %1 [L,R=301]
# Handle Front Controller...
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^ index.php [L]
</IfModule>
Can you try this rule just above # Handle Authorization Header line:
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} (?:^|\.)domain-a\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^sitemap\.xml$ /sitemap-a.xml [L,NC]
I'm hiding my file extensions with
RewriteEngine On
# Unless directory, remove trailing slash
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^([^/]+)/$ http://example.com/folder/$1 [R=301,L]
# Redirect external .php requests to extensionless url
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^(.+)\.php([#?][^\ ]*)?\ HTTP/
RewriteRule ^(.+)\.php$ http://example.com/folder/$1 [R=301,L]
# Resolve .php file for extensionless php urls
RewriteRule ^([^/.]+)$ $1.php [L]
When I navigate to this link
http://localhost/website/profile?user=user01&nofollow=1
I'm redirected here
http://example.com/folder/profile?user=user01
I've taken .php out of the url. Why does it redirect me?
Have it this way inside /website/.htaccess:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /website/
# Unless directory, remove trailing slash
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^([^/]+)/$ $1 [R=301,L]
# Redirect external .php requests to extensionless url
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^(.+)\.php[?\s] [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.+)\.php$ $1 [R=301,L,NC]
# Resolve .php file for extension-less php urls
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}.php -f
RewriteRule ^([^/.]+)$ $1.php [L]
Make sure to clear your browser cache before testing this.
Try using this:
Options +FollowSymLinks -MultiViews
# Turn mod_rewrite on
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
# To externally redirect /dir/foo.php to /dir/foo
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_METHOD} !POST
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,}\s([^.]+)\.php [NC]
RewriteRule ^ %1 [R=302,L,NE]
## To internally redirect /dir/foo to /dir/foo.php
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}.php -f [NC]
RewriteRule ^ %{REQUEST_URI}.php [L]
I am trying to hide the .php extensions on my page for all subdirectories with .htaccess.
Currently I have
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\. [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTPS}s ^on(s)|
RewriteRule ^ http%1://www.%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]
Options +FollowSymLinks -MultiViews
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1.php [L,QSA]
It works perfectly fine with normal pages, however any page inside a folder gives me a 500 Internal Service Error. An example URL would be
http://www.motorcityline.com/portfolio/michigantinting
Which is actually /portfolio/michigantinting.php. The .php file does exist, I just don't have the .htaccess file configured properly.
Replace your .htaccess with this code:
Options +FollowSymLinks -MultiViews
# Turn mod_rewrite on
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
# add www.
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\. [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTPS}s ^on(s)|
RewriteRule ^ http%1://www.%{SERVER_NAME}%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]
## hide .php extension
# To externally redirect /dir/foo.php to /dir/foo
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,}\s([^.]+)\.php [NC]
RewriteRule ^ %1 [R=301,L]
# To internally forward /dir/foo to /dir/foo.php
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/$1.php -f
RewriteRule ^(.+?)/?$ /$1.php [L]
Try this :
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\. [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on
RewriteRule ^.*$ https://www.%{SERVER_NAME}%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
