Liferay: multiple language support for blog - liferay

I am using Liferay 6.0 EE and trying out the blog portlet. I noticed the content of the classic Web Content Display can be localized, but I can't find how to have the same functionality for blog. Is there any way to have localized blog?

No, Nien, Nada... Blog has no multi language support.
You can use category to mark different blog post for different language.
Create a page for every language, use asset publisher portlet that show blog post targeting language by category.

Using Liferay for an already developed project

First of all, let me tell you what I am or my company is intended to do. We have already developed a project using Java, JSP and Servlet. We want it to integrate with Liferay so that we can change logo, css, images, themes or any other UI related component at run time using Liferay admin panel. But backend should be what we have developed.
In short, the UI of our project is controlled by Liferay, but control of data displayed on UI or submitted from UI should be from our developed backend code.
Now I have a few questions regarding above said approach of fulfilling the requirement:
What we are trying to do is possible?
Is this approach recommendable for what we intended to do?
Or do we need to develop our project from scratch to fit into Liferay? Like developing portlets and deploying in Liferay or other approach that has been given in Liferay documentation.
What about database integration? We have around 15 columns/fields in user table in database of our project which is completely different from that of Liferay's user table.
Liferay is a very new for us. We have checked the documentation section of Liferay but still few things like above said requirements and its implementation is not clear. Also, we would like to know in what scenarios/requirements Liferay is useful.
Ok let me try to answer your question point-wise and I would answer your last question first, which should automatically clear other questions:
Q. Also, we would like to know in what scenarios/requirements Liferay is useful.
This can have a very wide answer, but I have made it shorter for you:
If your site is content heavy and not data heavy then go for Portal
If you plan to use only a single web-application in a portal then I would suggest standalone custom developed web-application is much better.
I agree liferay portal will give you lot of things out-of-box like Single Sign-on, authorization, authentication, friendly-url and page creation and also lot of applications like Blogs, Wikis, Document library, some social networking apps etc. But think about it, do you really need all this? if not, then this is overkill
Here are some really nice links to better understand a portal's usage:
When to use a portal
Why to use portal technology
liferay tag wiki: It has nice description as to what is liferay and it also contains relevant links to Admin guide which will tell you what all functionalities liferay has and how you can manage it.
So still if you find your other questions unanswered, read-on ...
Q1. What we are trying to do is possible?
Nope. Portlet technology is different from Servlet technology. Liferay (or anyother portal) does not provide a way (atleast a simple one) to integrate servlets that would render pages inside a portal. For eg: Since with servlet you define URL mappings for a particular servlets before-hand in a web.xml but in a portal the URLs are generated by the Portlet Container. So portals work with portlets and not Servlets.
Q2. Is this approach recommendable for what we intended to do?
Nope. As I already explained in Q1.
Q3. Or do we need to develop our project from scratch to fit into Liferay? Like developing portlets and deploying in Liferay or other approach that has been given in Liferay documentation.
If you want to go the liferay way then Yes.
If you want to build applications that talk to your custom tables then portlets are the way to go.
Q4. What about database integration? We have around 15 columns/fields in user table in database of our project which is completely different from that of Liferay's user table.
If you go with Liferay. In this scenario you can create a combination of liferay-hook & portlet (may be using service-builder) to customize liferay's User creation mechanism and there by store data in both Liferay's User table and your custom tables.
Liferay's permission system is really fine-grained so you can also benefit from this system and put permission even on the data level.
In conclusion I would say:
Everything boils down to what your requirements are and what resources you have. And sometimes what future requirements you can have.
Note: All the terms used in this answer which are specific to liferay (like service-builder, hook etc) are explained in the liferay tag wiki.
Hope this helps. If you would like to know anything specific I would gladly update my answer.

Which is the Liferay equivalent of a IBM WebSphere Portal / WCM Menu?

I've developed with WPS and WCM for several years and now I am also learning Liferay. I can't help but compare the features and I understand that in Liferay some things are done differently.
I would like to know the best practices to manage the following simple example:
A simple page with a carrousel with several images and links
Google analytics inserted in the page (Reusable in most pages)
The following is how I'd solve it in IBM WPS:
A HTML component with the Google Analytics code that is called in every page (I can't find how to do this in Liferay)
A content definition of an image and a link.
Create several contents for each image and link.
Create a menu that shows the list of content in the form of a carrousel (I can't find how to do this either in Liferay)
I am aware that Liferay has a list portlet and content that has repeatable items. I know I could use these, however its much more usable if I can have on content for each image/link and one reusable HTML snippet of code.
How should I solve this in liferay in the most efficient way?
Thanks!
You have to use Liferay Web Content portlet for creating the carousel. This is available in Control Panel. For your particular requirememnt you have to create a dynamic web content, which involves using of Velocity language and javascript to iterate over a set of images. Infact if you see Liferay's website, the home page has this kind of stuff.
For Google Analytics there are two ways. Liferay is not just meant for creating one site, it caters creation of multiple sites. Each site has a group of pages. You can create site from Control panel again. In the site settings you have this option to add google analytics id. So with each site can have different google analytics id.
If you want to do it at a global level, we add the google analytics script snippet in the Theme of liferay.
To get a better understanding of all the jargons used in Liferay, you have to atleast go through Liferay's documentation. And while going through it you have unlearn what you have previously learned. Liferay has hell lot of features than Websphere portal.

Liferay : custom Web content Display List Portlet

I'm beginner in Liferay, and I need to customize the portlet webcontent display list.
I added a portlet in my page Home, and I managed to see the recent news that I created.
The news is displayed in a table (title, author and date display).
I want to display the news like this:
- The date of the news (above the title of the news)
- The title of the news (which is a link to the news)
I tried to create a structure, but I do not see commits its work?
Thank you to enlighten me?
PS: sorry for this English !!
Liferay is available in source - did you look at the implementation of the webcontent list portlet? You can either create a jsp hook for that portlet or just reimplement a similar one based on what you find in there...
As you say you'd like to customize Webcontent display list I assume you don't want its default behaviour. Once you know what to change in this portlet, read about jsp hooks, create a hook with the jsp changes you'd like (if it's limited to jsp changes) and deploy it.
Liferay's development documentation should have the information that you need, otherwise continue in the wiki on liferay.com
Edit: Also, you might want to look at AssetPublisher - maybe this provides a few more options for formatting your output.
Generally Liferay web content in journalarticle table. I have referred Liferay 6.0 Version.
Now, for showing liferay custom portlet view, you should use Liferay Portlet Creation and Liferay Service Builder.
Here are two useful article on those -
1> Liferay MVC Portlet
2> Liferay Service Builder
Now make the service for journalarticle table and use those in your portlet.
Some useful fields of journalarticle table for your reference are - title, createDate etc.

How to extend the Orchard CMS to support the features of a custom portal?

I am kind of new to Orchard CMS and I need to implement some kind of a portal on this technology. Basically the system need to have a couple of blogs and some additional content types (like events, webcasts, photo galleries etc). Whenever I navigate to a blog (for example http://localhost/OrchardLocal/blog1/) I want to have a menu with the following actions:
Latests posts - which will contain the latests posts of that blog
Webcasts - which will display the entries of type Webcast from the owner of the blog
Photo Galleries - same as Webcasts but with Photo Galleries
Events - same as Webcasts but with Events
On the main page of the portal (http://localhost/OrchardLocal/) I need to somehow have all this information aggregated. So I have to be able to see the latest posts, webcasts, photo galleries and events from all the authors.
I would like to know what would be the best approach to implement this.
There is a great blog post abount finding content in Orchard which should give you enough to start with.
If you want to implement the links as a menu you might want to look at the INavigationProvider interface which has a couple of good implementations (notably Pszmyd's Advanced Menu Module as well as the core Orchard ones).

Multi language SharePoint 2010

I'm developing a SharePoint site with multi-language feature.
My customer whants that when the language is changed, not only the labels are going to be traslated, but also the content: list contents, for example links descriptions, web part titles, announcements content, etc... (he's supposed to insert the content for all the languages the SharePoint site supports). How can I achieve this?
Thanks a lot
Ale
The only out-of-the-box option I can think of is variations. More info on this page: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ecm/archive/2010/04/12/variations-in-sharepoint-2010-connecting-people-with-content.aspx
