I'm trying to launch VideoLan (or the default local video player) from the browser, but not embedded in it.
The idea is to create a small movie list with an .hta file (or similar). I want to run it, see the movie list and select the one I want to play. But all I need is that particular movie to be played locally, out of the browser; just the same as me double clicking on the file.
Is this difficult?
I'm open to any answer, not just ".hta" kind. I'd like my app to run on a browser, but it's OK to use any other platform.

For example I've written a code to access a global variable of a web page and access values from it and then I want to put that value in some HTML div of that page. Now I can copy and paste this code into browser console and it will work.
But instead of pasting it in console, is there any way I can run my own server (localhost) using NodeJS and do the same from there? I mean communicate to the browser and that page which is open?
If yes, what things will I need?
I would use selenium-webdriver
It takes a bit of setup, but afterwards it's pretty easy
go here and click on the folder just above the one that says 'icons' (this should be the latest version of chrome webdriver)
Then, once you download the latest version, drag the exe C:\WINDOWS (if you're not on windows just move it to any folder on the PATH environment variable
now that you've done that, set up a simple script like this:

make sure to escape (but a backslash before) any single quotes in your driver.executeScript
I would recommend learning a bit about selenium-webdrivers api so that you can to more complicated things (such as running this without actually opening a new window). I would also that you use selenium-webdriver's api (which allows you to edit webpages, click things, input keys, etc.) instead of just putting everything in an executeScript as much as you can.
I've been searching for several days now a way to embed a data file, which is in text format, inside an app I'm trying to build in Adobe Flash for Adobe Air (for Android for now). The text file has a lot of data I want to use in my app, so I want to embed it inside the app, so when the app launches I can use it.
I've been reading about how to read and write text file in Flash and Adobe Air, but couldn't find a way to add this file to be part of my app. The Adobe Flash Library that is used for saving various assert (File > Import > Import to Library), doesn't support text file (only image, sound, video, and other graphic formats). Is there an other way to add a different (i.e. Text) file to the app?
As a last resort, and to help me proceed with the implementation, I tried manually copying the file to the Android "Documents" folder, and reading it from the app using this:

This worked on the PC when testing, but on Android it couldn't find my text file. I placed it in "My Files > Internal storage > Documents" (on Samsung phone). Is there a different "Documents" folder I should use to be found by documentsDirectory.resolvePath() function...
Anyway, as said, this was last resort solution, and much less preferred, because I don't want the users of my app to need to copy internal data files for the app to work, it should be part of the APK... So embedding the text file somehow inside the app is a much better solution, but I couldn't find a way to do that.

I found another answer few hours ago, and will share it now, in case someone else encounters this problem.
You could embed a file from the "Publish Settings" dialog, then going into "AIR for Android Setting" (small wrench icon). On the "AIR for Android Setting" under "General" tab, at the bottom there is "Include files". You can click the [+] icon and add any file you want.
From the code you can access this file using standard file read method, using URLLoader & URLRequest functions and Event.COMPLETE to get the data when the file finishes loading.

This cannot be done from the server. The only option you have that I know (knew) of to actually directly print on the client is using a signed applet

I have a custom content type which allows me to upload an audio file.
I found a way to play the audio file when the user access a page of this content type.
Now i want to let the user download the audio file, but not remove the play capabilities. I want to add a download button on the same page (details page of the content type).
Can someone explain me how to do it ? I've got nowhere on this matter.
There are many ways to achieve this, depending on your drupal expertise. If you are using node templates, then you can print the same variable twice, once inside the music player plug in, and once with a download button. Something like this:

To achieve this without writing any code or templates, you can do what Fleix Eve have suggested above. Set the display settings as direct download. Then create a block view which shows your audio file field, take the argument from URL. Then set tat block to display on node-view.
I want to play a sound from a Chrome Extension, but I read that Content Scripts cannot play sounds. So I put this code in my background script:

but still no sound. From the Console of the _generated_backgound_page.html I was able to inspect the Network tab and see that the sound file is loaded successfully, but I hear nothing.
Also, in another HTML page, I could load another Javascript, which has the above code, and it works (I can hear the sound.)
The fact that it is in the background script seems to have made it fail. Also, note that I do not have a background PAGE associated with the background SCRIPT. Does that matter？
edit: problem solved. The above code works but I forgot to listen to the right sound output channel.
You can generate the background page with javascript. I think the sound must be in a html page to be loaded and played.
