I've been working on a deployment work flow with Dokku and Docker and now I want to take care of continuity of my app (along the lines of Forever). To test it, I need a way to deliberately crash my app.
I created a new route '/crashme' with a function that is supposed to wreck my app.
Haven't found a way that worked locally with node/nodemon so far, I've tried:
Division by zero
Throw a new user exception
Referencing a variable that doesn't exist
None of those things crash the app to a point where it needs to be restarted.
Just how can I bring it down?
Three things come to my mind:
You could just call process.exit. This for sure brings your application to a state where it needs to be restarted.
The other option might be to run an endless loop, something such as while (true) {}. This should make Node.js use 100% of your CPU, and hence the application should be restarted as well (although this, of course, means that you / someone has to watch your application).
Create a module in C that crashes by e.g. trying to access a random place in memory. I have no such module at hand, but I'm pretty sure that it should be quite easy for someone with C skills to write such a module.
I was attempting a similar thing with a /crash route in express, but just throwing an error from within the route handler was not enough to crash it.
process.exit would stop my app but forever would not restart it. (The forever logs just said something like process self terminated.)
What did work for me was inserting this into my /crash route:

I am working on a node-based MUD game and I would like to limit the amount of time any one command can execute before it gets killed (e.g. 1000ms). I found a module called Tripwire which seems promising but it does not appear to be actively maintained. Tripwire does work as advertised. It manages to force an exception if someone creates an endless loop, but it does not support any resumption of the original script thread.
I am looking for either:
(1) A similar but actively maintained Node module that can interrupt and resume the original event thread, or,
(2) A working example of V8's Isolate::IsExecutionTerminating + Isolate::CancelTerminateExecution (I forked Tripwire but I haven't done any meaningful C++ in a long time and am now just beating my head against the wall).
I have only been able to find test cases so far (which is at least something). I am really hoping that someone has already tackled this, though.

I know this is a bit vague.
I ended up instrumenting the script by passing it through acorn and generating my own final script. I am hoping that the sandbox is locked down to prevent users from escaping it. Example of "compiled" output:

This new "language" supports public, protected, package, and private variables/methods (by maintaining its own internal call stack, execution context, etc). The directives are "reserved words" (e.g. __bfc=begin function call, __ala=assert loop alarm).

We've been developing using Excel JavaScript API for quite a few months now. We have been coming across context related issues which got resolved for unknown reasons. We weren't able to replicate these issues and wondered how they got resolved. Recently similar issues have started popping up again.
Error we consistently get:
property 'address' is not available. Before reading the property's
value, call the load method on the containing object and call
"context.sync()" on the associated request context.
We thought as we have multiple functions defined to modularise code in project, may be context differs somewhere among these functions which has gone unnoticed. So we came up with single context solution implemented via JavaScript Module pattern.

While implementing single context, this time round, we have been able to replicate the issue though.

In above case, only "A1" gets printed as range address to console. I can't see any of the other addresses (A2 to A1000)being printed. Only catch block executes. Can anyone explain why this happens?
Although I've written for loop above, that isn't my use case. In real use case, such situations occur where one range object in function a needs to load range address. In the mean while another function b also wants to load range address. Both function a and function b work asynchronously on separate tasks such as one creates table object (table needs address) and other pastes data to sheet (there's debug statement to see where data was pasted).
This is something our team hasn't been able to figure out or find a solution for.
There is a lot packed into this code, but the issue you have is that you're calling sync a whole bunch of times without awaiting the previous sync.
There are several problems with this:
If you were using different contexts, you would actually see that there is a limit of ~50 simultaneous requests, after which you'll get errors.
In your case, you're running into a different (and almost opposite) problem. Given the async nature of the APIs, and the fact that you're not awaiting on the sync-s, your first sync request (which you'd think is for just A1) will actually contain all the load requests from the execution of the entire for loop. Now, once this first sync is dispatched, the action queue will be cleared. Which means that your second, third, etc. sync will see that there is no pending work, and will no-op, executing before the first sync ever came back with the values!
[This might be considered a bug, and I'll discuss with the team about fixing it. But it's still a very dangerous thing to not await the completion of a sync before moving on to the next batch of instructions that use the same context.]
The fix is to await the sync. This is far and away the simplest to do in TypeScript 2.1 and its async/await feature, otherwise you need to do the async version of the for loop, which you can look up, but it's rather unintuitive (requires creating an uber-promise that keeps chaining a bunch of .then-s)
So, your modified TypeScript-ified code would be

Note the async in front of the loadRangeAddress function, and the two await-s in front of ContextManager.sync() and loadRangeAddress.
Note that this code will also run quite slowly, as you're making an async roundtrip for each cell. Which means you're not using batching, which is at the very core of the object-model for the new APIs.
For completeness sake, I should also note that creating a "raw" RequestContext instead of using Excel.run has some disadvantages. Excel.run does a number of useful things, the most important of which is automatic object tracking and un-tracking (not relevant here, since you're only reading back data; but would be relevant if you were loading and then wanting to write back into the object).

In particular, it has a very detailed (10-page) section on the internal workings of the object model ("Section 5.5: Implementation details, for those who want to know how it really works"). It also offers advice on using TypeScript, has a general Promise/async-await primer, describes what .run does, and has a bunch more info about the OM. Also, though not available yet, it will soon offer information on how to resume using the same context (using a newer technique than what was originally described in How can a range be used across different Word.run contexts?). The book is a lean-published "evergreen" book, son once I write the topic in the coming weeks, an update will be available to all existing readers.

I am making a program for a robot in a competition, and need to multithread.
When I make a second task (task two()) and try to start (startTask) it with a button press from a controller, it just executes the first statement of the task and only as long as the button is pressed, instead of the whole block. I've tried many things including putting a loop in the second task also, using a function instead of a task and sleeping for 200 milliseconds before, and after the startTask(two); function, but the same thing happens every time.
I can't post my program because I don't want other people to steal it, sorry.
What edits will make it run the whole block?

Since this is Controller Mode, I'm assuming that you are setting the motors to stop when the corresponding button is not pressed.

This is the cause for the stopping of the motors when you release. All of the other methods that you tried had nothing to do with this, so they shouldn't have worked.
You need to put something like this:

This will control an individual motor. Repeat this for all other motors being used.
After that is done, make the function look something like this:

Expand the above program so it matches your current function, while using the MotorSpeed variables as setMotorSpeed variables.
This should make you able to drive and run a function at the same time without them interrupting each other.
I need to write a script, that takes an array of values and multithreaded way it (forks?) runs another script with a value from array as a param, but so max running forks would be set, so it would wait for script to finish if there are more than n running already. How do I do that?
There is a plugin named child_process, but not sure how to get it done, as it always waits for child termination.

After the conversation in the comments, here's how to have Node executing your PHP script.
Since you're calling an external command, there's no need to create a new thread. The Node.js runloop understands that calls to external commands are async operations, and it can execute all of them at the same time.
You can see different ways for executing an external process in this SO question (linked answer may be the best in your case).
However, since you're already moving everything to Node, you may even consider rewriting your "process.php" script to Node.js code. Since, as you explained, that script connects to remote servers and databases and uses nslookup (which you may not really need with Node.js), you won't need any separate thread: they're all async operations that Node.js excels at performing.
I am currently attempting to run a separate thread in the Unity 3D to calculate a long path using A*. I do have the thread running and it does not utilize the unity API so it doesn't cause any conflicts but for some reason it seems to stop and I can't figure out why.

I have in a update function the state of the thread being constantly printed out. When I add one unit to the list it works perfectly fine. When I add multiple units to the list the thread seems to stop. Anyone have any idea what going on?
