I just reinstalled my laptop on Windows 8 and VS2012 but now i can't connect to a private TFS server but it work well on my desktop with Windows 7 and VS2010.
For a lot of people this problem was solved by clearing IE cookies, but it don't work for me.
I would contact the TFS administrator and check how authentication is configured on the server.
Also, be sure to use your full domain name(e.g DOMAIN_NAME\USER_NAME).
I don't believe this has anything to do with the browser implementation you decide to use.

I recently migrated windows 8.1. But unable to open vs2013/vs2012 new Project template.

This is because you migrated from windows 8 to windows 8.1
First Go to Control Panel --> Check Updates for Windows 8.1
Install All Important Updates
Restart Your Pc
All things will properly work..
I tried almost every solution I found.
I would like to share, what I have tried and did not work and what did work and solved the problem.
Here are the "solutions" which did not work for me but claimed that they worked for some people.
1) Removing FastPictureViewer Codec Pack (which was already not installed)
2) Having a modify permission to everyone for
c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727\config\machine.config
and
c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v4.0.30319\config\machine.config
3) Using Procmon to see broken registries
4) Uninstalling/reinstalling VS13 and all shared packages
5) Renaming the machine.config.default to machine.config
6) Running Visual Studio as an administrator
And this what it solved it:
Simply installed all the updates for windows 8.1 (not only the important ones, also optional updates as well) and restart. It sounds crazy after spending hours and hours but that solved my problem.

I tried all the steps mentioned above and it did not work. Even I was not able to uninstall VS.
I reapaired .NET framework through Contrl Panel->Programs and Features-> Microsoft .Net Framework-> right click Chane/Uninstall Repair .Net Framework.
This solved the problem.
I got same error after Oracle Data Provider for VS 2013 installation. I installed all Windows 8.1 Important Updates but it didn't work. I read somewhere that it can be happened because of lastly installed VS Add-On etc. then uninstalled Oracle Data Provider for VS 2013 and problem solved.
I am using Visual Studio 2012. This problem occurred to me after I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, so it is definitely related to the OS upgrade.
As some answers say, installing updates for Windows 8.1 will resolve the issue. But you don't need to install everything. I installed only the .NET related updates. Specifically, I installed "Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2 for Windows 8.1" (KB2934520), and a few others "Security and Quality Rollup" updates as well.
After a reboot, the "Loading Components" dialog shows up briefly upon launching Visual Studio, indicating that the cache of some components are invalidated and they are compiled again. After that, the "Add Reference" dialog works again.
Today I upgraded my windows 7 ultimate to windows 10 pro. Every thing seems to work fine. But the localhost is now throwing error : HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable.
I checked IIS, it is running. I checked the version of IIS from IIS Manager, it is showing Version 10.0.10240.16384.
I test my sites on localhost.
Before upgrade, in windows 7 ultimate it was working fine. I also checked "Turn windows feature on or off" and found that IIS is installed properly.
Please guide me.
Thanks Joe Raio for providing the hint. I checked the event log and found that rewrite.dll was causing error. I uninstalled IIS URL rewrite extension and the problem is gone. Now everything is working as before, classic asp, php, everything.

I'm new to TFS on Visual Studio 2012 and I found the TFS 2013 Express edition to install. The thing is my friend and I are working on a project and we wanted to sync our version to either of us computer. Currently, we don't have a server to say but is it possible to use one of our computers as a server and install TFS on it and sync our projects? Does it require Internet connectivity whenever we want to sync? Can we use local area connection to do the sync? Do we need TFS to be installed on both of our computers?
A link to installation guideline would also be helpful.

TFS works perfectly well over a LAN. At the end of the day it's just a HTTP server, so as long as either you and your friend are on the same network, or if not, the necessary ports are open on the router, he can connect fine via the internet. Doesn't matter which one of you hosts it.
You do not need TFS on both computers, Visual Studio will happily connect to it once you provide the details (Access from the Team Menu, and Team Explorer).
I'm looking to set up a local server on my laptop which is running Windows XP Home Edition. I've noticed that it is impossible to install IIS on the Home Edition, but is there a way around this? Is there other software that I can install to run a server?
the purpose behind this is to mess around and play with ASP to create dynamic websites and my only computer I own has Home Edition.
Also, would running a server on my 5 year old laptop with 2GB of RAM be a good idea?
Windows XP Home Edition does not come with IIS (only Professional). There are workarounds available, but Home Edition was not designed for this. Visual Studio (full and express) come with Cassini, which is a version of IIS you can use for testing/development.

If you are developing using Visual Studio 2005, 8 , 10 you don't need IIS.
The hardware should be fine as you will be the only user accessing the website :)

My friend accidentally bought a laptop with Windows Vista Home Basic Edition. He figured out how to install IIS on it, but it doesn't seem to have either the management console or the admin tools. Is there any way for him to configure a site or import an IIS 6 config file?

Not entirely certain here, but start the IIS console on another machine and tell it to connect to the laptop? The normal management console snap-ins all support remote operation.
Yu need to go back into Windows Component Setup and choose to install the Managemnet console(s).
Control Panel>Programs->Turn Windows Feature on and off.
You will see Internet Information Services in there, go under there and you will find the management console(s).
And yes, they are available to be installed on Vista Home. Once installed you can setup by opening Control Panel->Adminstrative Tools and you will see the IIS manager in there.
Per Microsoft Technet, IIS Management Console is unavailable on Windows Vista Home Basic and Starter Editions though it is available on Home Premium and above. And I can confirm it doesn't appear in the list of options when I install IIS.
Okay, not being on Vista I don't know for sure, but on XP the application which controls IIS is %SystemRoot%\system32\inetsrv\iis.msc. Perhaps hunting around for iis.msc would be a first step.
You should be able to do an upgrade to home premium. I'm pretty sure it's available at quite a low cost. My Home Basic laptop came with a CD that had all the necessary stuff for upgrading to a different version of Windows (I upgraded to Linux). If you really want IIS to do development work, you should really upgrade. Or if you just want .Net, you can install VS.Net Express and use the development server.
