I'm trying to create a CSV file of one of my customer's serial numbers. We print them as barcodes for them to use, and normally I'd use our barcode software to generate the numbers. However, we're using a different method of printing, and it requires a CSV/Excel file of all the numbers to be printed. The barcode is as follows:
MC100VGVA.
The last digit is a check digit created from the rest of the string.
Now, my problem comes with the "VGVA" bit. Column A is the prefix (MC), Column B is the number (100), Column C is the incrementing 4 characters (VGVA), and Column D is the check digit.
I need for the VGVA bit to increment alphanumerically. So, when it gets to VGVZ, I need it to go to VGW0. Then when it gets to VGZZ, it needs to go to VH00 and so on until they reach ZZZZ, in which the next digit would increase Column B to 101, and Column C would become 0000.
I've attempted to use the CHAR formula, as well as CONCATENATE, and MID. But, because I'm not well versed in these formulas, my attempts at editing them to work with 4 digits have been failing me.
I'm not opposed to using VBA if needed, but it's not something I've ever worked with, so you'll have to forgive any ignorance on my part.

It looks like you are trying to create a new base, the one based on 27 digits (0 and all letter from 'A' to 'Z'). So I'd advise you to create a conversion from and to 27-digit system.
Let me first explain you what I mean in octal numbering (8 digits, from 0 to 7): in that system we start from (just some examples):
a=0011
b=1237
c=1277
The meaning of those numbers is:
a equals 0*8^3 + 0*8^2 + 1*8^1 + 1*8^0 = 9, so:
a+1 equals 10, and converting this to octal numbering yields:
0012
b equals 1*8^3+2*8^2+3*8^1+7*8^0 = 671, so:
b+1 equals 672, and converting this to octal numbering yields:
1240
c equals 1*8^3 + 2*8^2 + 7*8^1 + 7*8^0 = 703, so:
c+1 equals 704, and converting this to octal numbering yields:
1300
I propose to do exactly the same for your 27-digit system, with following example:
VGZZ equals 22*27^3 + 7*27^2 + 26*27^1 + 26 = 438857
VGZZ+1 equals 438858, and converting this to 27-digit numbering yields:
VH00
You can do this, using a VBA function you need to develop yourself. The converting from the string to the normal number is obvious, and in the other way around, you use =MOD(...,27^3) and other similar functions.
I believe I've found a non-VBA answer to this question, thanks to someone on another forum.

I have a column of text values that I want to delete the first 8 and last 4 characters from i.e '12345678john1234' would just become 'john'. I know how to use the left and right functions separately but can't seem to get them working together. The mid function won't work in this case. Is this possible? Thanks

Explaination:
MID: get the middle string
=MID(text,start_nums,numchars)
start_nums = 9 to start from the character j
numchars = len(text)-12 = 16 - 12 = 4
Then you will get the result as john
I want to this but i don't know what to do, the only functions it seems to be useful is "DEC.TO.HEX".
This is the problem, i have in one cell this text:
1234
And in the next cell i want the hexadecimal value of each character, the expected result would be:
31323334
Each character must be represented by two hexadecimal characters. I don't have an idea how to solve this in excel avoiding make a coded program.

In your version you might need the .s in the function (and perhaps ;s rather than ,s).
DEC2HEX may be of assistance. Use, as follows:
=DEC2HEX(A3)
First split 1234 to 1 2 3 4 by using MID(), then use Code() for each character, and then again concentate. Below is the formula, Y21 is the cell in which 1234 is written

I have a txt file approx 40k long. there are no delimiters or structure to the txt file. I need to identify a text string within this long string 15 characters long, but I know that char 16 and 17 equals char 14 and 15 respectively. Any idea how whis can be done using r?
If i understand correctly, here's a sample string.
a<-"aaabbbcccddddfffeee"
And let's say you want to extract a 6 character string where the 5th and 6th characters match the next two characters after the string. You can find that with a regular expression like
regmatches(a, regexpr("(.{4}(.{2}))\\2", a))
However that does also grab the two extra character after the match. You can trim off the the last two characters, or you could use captured matches. I've written a helper function call regcapturedmatches which makes this a bit easier. You could do
regcapturedmatches(a, regexpr("(.{4}(.{2}))\\2", a, perl=T))[[1]][,1]
to get just the match.
I'm in a basic MATLAB college course, and need some help with my code.
theres an external .txt file with names in it, with corresponding numbers assigned to each name. my goal is to place all the first names, last names, and numbers into arrays, find the lowest number in the 'number' array, get the corresponding indexer number, and print the first and last name related with that number.
the text file reads 25 different names and numbers

The command fgetl means read a line from the text file. Therefore your code is reading 2x25 = 50 lines of text. How do you know that your file has this many lines in it? You should read a new line, process it, and repeat until you reach the end of the file:

while ischar(tline)
disp(tline)
tline = fgetl(fid);

fclose(fid);
However, this would not do what you want. You should rather use fscanf to read data in the format you want. You want to read two consecutive strings (first name, last name) and an integer number. So you can use
A = fscanf(fid, '%s %s %d', [3 inf]);
to read three items at a time and repeat until the end of the file.
I answered my own question earlier today, but here's what I found if anyone is interested:
you have to index a line of string by using curly brackets instead of straight ones.
i.e.:
for index = 1:1:25
firstname{index} = fgetl(fid1);
end
fprintf('%10s', firstn{index});
fprintf will print whichever number index is supplied.
