I would like to add the VC110_CRT merge modules to the installer but the merge modules cannot be installed on Windows XP. The error Message is.
This installation package cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service. Your must install a Windows service pack that conatains a newer version of the Windows Installer service.
and yes, Its a fully updated Windows XP (SP 3 + all updates). As far as I understand it, we need at least Windows Vista to install the update.

Is there a way to convert the Microsoft_VC110_CRT_x86.msm module, so its usable under Windows xp
I know I can use the vs_2012_redist, but it has ~6,5 MB instead of ~0,8 of the merge modul size.
and I only need the CRT, because the app uses QT and no MFC/ATL/....
This is an incorrect error message. MSIEXEC is looking at the schema verson in the SummaryInformationStream of the MSM and seeing it's newer then the version of MSI on Windows and giving you this error message.
In truth, merge modules can never be installed because they have no concept of Product or Features. They are merely encapsulated collections of components and related installation metadata. Merge modules are like .LIB files in C/C++ and are statically linked (merged) into an MSI at build time.
NSIS isn't a Windows Installer technology so it can't use merge modules. Instead you should use the redistributable provided by Microsoft and launch the EXE with the correct command line.
You're only other options are to deploy the desired DLL privately (in your application directory), statically link it in your EXE or dump NSIS and create a proper MSI.
Be aware of the security / patching implications of your choice.

everything worked OK till i needed to add installation of VS 2012 C++ redistributables.
i'm using the installscript to initiate a command line for installing it quietly - 'vcredist_x64.exe /q'.
if the custom action is being added to the execute sequance, the following error is coming from the "VS 2012 C++ redistributables. -
ERROR 0X80070652: ERROR_INSTALL_ALREADY_RUNNING.This error is due to Another installation is already in progress. Complete that installation before proceeding with this install.
if running it manually, regardless to the IS installation, everything is working perfectly.
Also, when the custom action is on the UI sequance - works great. - i cannot leave it on the UI sequance, since our product is being deployed quietly along with our product client.
I've been trying to change into a different project type - "installscript MSI"... Same error.

Short Answer: You can't run this executable from inside your MSI for technical reasons, you should run them in sequence instead. First the executable, then your MSI (batch file or manually). Or you should make an executable that runs them in sequence (WiX Bundle for example).
VCRedist: The VS 2012 C++ redistributable vcredist_x64.exe is a WiX Bundle with a couple of MSI files inside. You are not allowed to run embedded / nested MSI files concurrently with the main MSI installation. Simple explanation here. Inline explanation: This is because MSI files install as a transaction that is supposed to be possible to roll back. Hence the file installation sequence locks the system to prevent other MSI files installing when one is already in progress.
Extract: You can extract a WiX bundle using the WiX toolkit's dark.exe: dark.exe /x D:\VCRedist vcredist_x64.exe. WiX toolkit must be installed and dark.exe must be in the path or you must specify its full path.
Setup.exe: The solution is to run the MSI files in sequence inside a setup.exe bundle created with WiX, Installshield (see link for sample screenshot - more on suite projects here), Advanced Installer or a similar setup creation tool. Another approach is to simply deliver the runtime next to your installer and install them in sequence with a batch file or even by instructing the user to do so.
Merge Modules: Most VCRedist versions have merge modules that you can use to install the runtime (as opposed to setup executables). WiX sample. These are merged into your own MSI at build time and hence feature no nested MSI processes. There are some issues with merge modules and recent VCRedist versions.

I have a software that is coded in C#. It depends on two(!) third party dll which require Visual C++ 2008 and Visual C++ 2005 redistribute. Originally the installer was built in InnoSetup with all "vs200x_sp1_vcredist_x??.exe" embedded and run on install time. However since it lacks of some advanced features we decided to migrate to Wix Toolset.
The problem is, MSI was running in a more restricted environment, so I didn't figure out what is the best way to require those redistributable file being executed properly. I was tried to use merge modules instead but it didn't work - I can see that the files were installed but dependency walker shows that dll is still not link to the right version.
I think that WinSxS makes things worse at least in this case, since the software keep failing with some error message regarding "Windows Side by Side configiration (14001)" when I use the merge module approach.
So the question is:
Are there any way to build a MSI that runs a exe that install some prerequisites? I wouldn't mind those prerequisites being downloaded or just embedded.
I know that WinSxS information is stored in the manifest of the dll. So if I was permitted to remove the manifest information by the third party company, and use dynamic dll loading instead the problem could be resolved. However is this legitimate? Since I will then need to embedded the Microsoft dlls directally in the msi.
I have noticed one of the dll's manifest says its required version is "9.0.21022.8" but the one in my MSM file is "9.0.30729.6161". Is this the issue? If so can I resolve the issue by I modifying the manifest to allow the right version? I don't think this will cause the dll not working, anyway.
The msi file should install only your software. If you need to install pre-requisites, you should use a bootstrapper for it. Bootstrapper's responsibility is to install pre-requisites and it's not a task of your msi.

You can build an MFC app that requires no installation (just copying the files to the target computer) by statically linking and/or deploying the Visual C++ runtime redist side-by-side.
As Arnon has answered, you can build a .Net app that requires no installation if you target a version of .Net that is pre-installed on your target operating system. This blog entry lists the .Net versions included with each version of Windows.
what version of windows are you targeting your application to ? different versions of windows have different versions of .NET (see this link for details).
So basically, if you are looking for no installation you'd have to shoot for the lowest common denominator and/or ship multiple versions of your app.
I understand that it isn't what you want but -If you do go with .NET it is usually better to ensure that the installer will install the right version of .NET if needed (see this link for example)
I'm trying to investigate why would my app, written in VC 2008, crash on bare Windows XP with c0000005. It works great on any windows vista and 7. On XP it would crash with no additional info. Below are the details and the result of a few days worth of my headaches, eliminating one reason after another. Here's the details:
I have Win7 ultimate with XP Mode with iexplore 6 and presumably no patches whatsoever.
I install my program and nothing else, since it is supposed to be install-and-run thing with no additional packages needed.
My app has compiled-in VC2008 runtime (using /MT, as opposed to /MD compiler switch)
I'm using firebird embedded, which needs VC2005 (edited, i wrote VC2008 before) libs for itself anyway, so i put them in my app's working dir
when i install VC++ 2008 on this XP Mode machine, it doesn't crash anymore, so debugging this way is impossible
I've narrowed this error's occurence down to the VC2005 runtime - right after i install it my app stops crashing. But i don't know what could be using it's components. When running the release version under VC2008 IDE, nothing shows any vc2005 libs being loaded (weird, if i say so myself).
My app's linker's dependencies lists these (i added only the first two, the rest was there courtesy of VisualStudio): jpeg.lib, gdiplus.lib, kernel32.lib, user32.lib, gdi32.lib, winspool.lib, comdlg32.lib, advapi32.lib, shell32.lib, ole32.lib, oleaut32.lib, uuid.lib, odbc32.lib, odbccp32.lib, comctl32.lib, %(AdditionalDependencies)
I am also using IBPP firebird interface, which loads these dynamically, so they are present in my app's dir (they need msvc?80.dlls):

Please advise why would vc2005 runtime be a remedy for my app to not crash on a bare Win XP. Or how could i debug that one without installing vc 2008 on target machine. I'm starting to blame windows xp's components. Ultimately i want my app to not require any additional packages, such as VC2008 or 2005, especially when no component of my app requires the latter.

The answer is in your question, these DLLs are VS2005 runtime support DLLs. They cannot be stored in your exe directory, they must be registered in the side-by-side cache. This does not typically cause an AV, but it isn't impossible if the code doesn't check the return value of LoadLibrary(). You can download an installer for them from Microsoft. It doesn't otherwise have anything to do with Windows XP, you just happened to try to run this program on machines that already had the DLLs installed. Very common on a dev machine for example.
If you don't want a dependency on them then you'll have to rebuild those DLLs that require it. Which is a good idea, having a dependency on more than one version of the CRT is pretty unhealthy.
If you are wondering why you are having to deal with this: it was Microsoft's attempt to put DLL Hell in the developer's lap instead of the user's. They've since withdrawn this, VS2010 again makes it a user problem. That was a pretty big party in Bangalore, I'd imagine.
I am trying to deploy a Visual C++ application (developed with Microsoft Visual Studio 2008) using a Setup and Deployment Project. After installation, users on some target computers get the following error message after launching the application executable: “This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem.” Another user after installation could run the application properly. I cannot find the root cause of this problem, despite spending several hours on the Visual Studio help files and online forums (most postings date back to 2006). Does anyone at Stack Overflow have a suggestion? Thanks in advance. Additional details appear below.
The application uses FLTK 1.1.9 for a GUI library, as well as some Boost 1.39 libraries (regex, lexical_cast, date_time, math).
I made sure I am trying to deploy the release version (not the debug version) of the application. The Runtime library in the Code Generation settings is Multi-threaded DLL (/MD).
The dependency walker of myapp.exe lists the following DLLs: wsock32.dll, comctl32.dll, kernel32.dll, user32.dll, gdi32.dll, shell32.dll, ole32.dll, mvcp90.dll, msvcr90.dll.
In the Setup and Deployment Project, I add the following DLLs to the File System on Target Machine: fltkdlld.dll, and a folder named Microsoft.VC90.CRT with msvcm90.dll, msvcp90.dll, mcvcr90.dll and Microsoft.VC90.CRT.manifest.
The installation process on the target computers getting the error message requires having the .Net Framework 3.5 installed first.

Add the Visual C++ Redistributable to your Deployment project and be sure to run Setup.exe instead of the MSI when installing. This will invoke the VCRedist bootstrapper to ensure your PC has those pieces before installing your app.
Dependency Walker only shows static (link time) dependencies - it cannot possibly know about dynamic dependencies such as COM objects.
I had a similar problem after the ATL security updates last year. My app needed a later version of the C++ runtime libraries than the deployment project included.
Try running Windows Update on the target machines after installation, or download and install the latest (28 July 2009) C++ redistributable package directly.
