I just tried installing chere, but it doesn't appear to be available. It doesn't show up in the available packages during install and I can't install it using apt-cyg either:
$ apt-cyg install chere
...
Installing chere
Package chere not found or ambiguous name, exiting
So, I ran a cygcheck:
$ cygcheck -c chere
Cygwin Package Information
Package Version Status
$
Anyone know what is going on?
It seems not to be available in the 64bit version.
The 32 bit edition lets you install Chere just fine.

I am trying to install octave from the "Its Pointless" repository mentioned in the termux wiki. The repository is added successfully as far as I can tell. However, when I try the command pkg install octave I get the error "octave Depends openblas" "octave Depends arpack-ng" "Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages"
I have run dpkg --get-selections | grep held but it doesn't return anything.
When I try to run pkg install openblas it gives the error "openblas Depends libgcc but it is not installable"
When I try to run pkg install libgcc it gives the error "package libgcc is not available but is referred to by another package, this may mean the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source. However, the following packages replace it: ndk-sysroot"
After searching some more I did pkg install clang but I still get the same errors. ndk-sysroot has been installed during installation of clang.
I have done apt-get autoclean, apt-get autoremove and apt-get purge but that did not do anything.
What can I do to fix this problem and install octave on my phone?
The problem got solved by itself.
I tried pkg install octave again and got a response saying "The repository https://termux.net stable Release is no longer signed."
So I ran the command bash setup-pointless-repo.sh again.
And that was it! pkg install octave is now working.
recently i tried to install oracle on my linux with apt (I never used yum before) using fast manual:

then I tryied to uninstall oracle and dependencies but after command:

So it seems like yum install in my system new libraries but didn't link it correctly? I dont know what do in this moment because it seems like armagedon on my ubuntu...
Does this mean you're on ubuntu and tried to install rpm packages using yum? The manual you used is for Oracle Linux 6, why would you try that on ubuntu?
rpm packages are not compatible with debian based systems like ubuntu, which use deb packages. So you've probably screwed your system big time, overwriting important system libraries with incompatible ones.
If apt-get is still working, then you can try to reinstall (apt-get --reinstall install) the equivalent libraries to the ones mentioned in the install manual you linked to - naming isn't always the same for rpm and deb packages. dpkg -l should help you see which the correct installed libraries are. I'd start with the C libraries (libc) etc.
But if apt-get is screwed also, then you'd need to download the packages manually from an ubuntu mirror and install them using dpkg, but I think a reinstall (or restore from backup if you have one) would be the best option.
I downloaded the Haskell-platform source from here: http://www.haskell.org/platform/linux.html, installed ghc, and did /.configure. However when I do sudo make, I get the following error:

Instead of trying to install from the sources, simply install the Ubuntu packages, which will be much simpler, with:
$ sudo apt-get install haskell-platform
If you need a local version of the documentation and the profiling libraries, install the additional packages with:
$ sudo apt-get install haskell-platform-doc haskell-platform-prof
Daniel Fisher's comment led me to the solution. You have to install all the profiling libraries for each of the ghc packages you have installed.
Just write
sudo apt-get install ghc*-prof

I fixed this by sudo apt install libgdal-dev

In earlier versions (which had apt-get)
sudo apt-get install libgdal-dev
You need the -dev package with headers and shared library links for development besides the normal package for deployment. Two different use cases as far as the distro is concerned.
On my distribution:

Minor update: Here in 2016, running Ubuntu 14.04.2, libgdal1h seems to
have replaced libgdal1(though libgdal1-dev is still needed). At least
I get an error to that effect when I attempted to apt-get install libgdal1
For Ubuntu 16.04 the corresponding line would be
sudo apt-get install libgdal1i
Such renaming of upstream libraries is common; something such as apt-cache search libgdal can help locate the current package names. The important key though is that the "abstract" development package libgdal-dev is all that is needed to build as it pulls the "concrete" current run-time package (here: libgdal1i) in via a dependency.
You can use apt-file package, to find which package contains the missing file you are looking for.
First install the apt-file using the command apt-get install apt-file Update apt-file using the command apt-file update Now you can use apt-file to find the missing file. apt-file search gdal-config
For my case, I got the same error when configuring grass-7.1 from svn. As shown below:
$ ./configure
...more...
checking whether to use GDAL... yes
checking for gdal-config... /usr/bin/gdal-config
...more....
./configure: 1: ./configure: /usr/bin/gdal-config: not found
./configure: 6093: test: =: unexpected operator
configure: error: *** Unable to locate GDAL library.
But, after looking for gdal-config file with apt-file as shown below, I was able to resolve the error, after installing the package libgdal1-dev
$ apt-file search gdal-config
Results
libgdal1-dev: /usr/bin/gdal-config
So I installed libgdal1-dev, as shown below:
$ sudo apt-get install libgdal1-dev
This happens because the configuration failed for package ‘rgdal’
so we have to install necessary dependencies.
The packages libgdal-dev and libproj-dev are required:
sudo apt-get install gdal-bin proj-bin libgdal-dev libproj-dev
Then install rgdal by
install.packages("rgdal")
Load rgdal by
library(rgdal)
On macOS
brew install gdal
removed the error

The same problem occurred today to me on a Linux CentOS 6.10 on which I do not have administration rights.
What I did:
a) Create a conda environment dedicated to my R version
conda create --name MYR
b) Activate the environment
source activate MYR
c) Install R
conda install -c conda-forge r-base
d) Install libgdal
conda install -c conda-forge libgdal
This solved the problem for me. My R version was 4.1.3. I guess other versions should work.
For manjora or archlinux, just try:
yay -S gdal
I am trying to install fuse-python package, when I run
python setup.py build
It fails, when I checked the contents of setup.py I found this line
if os.system('pkg-config --exists fuse 2> /dev/null') == 0
this line fails. Also when I check PKG_CONFIG_PATH
echo $PKG_CONFIG_PATH
it prints nothing. Any sort of help is appreciated. Thanks in advance
In Ubuntu the package is libfuse-dev, so to install sudo apt-get install libfuse-dev should do the trick.
Most likely you haven't got the fuse development package installed. You don't say which OS you are using, but on openSuSE
zypper install fuse-devel
should do the trick.
I used sudo apt-get install libfuse-dev and it worked
I had a similar problem. If you have a 64 bit ubuntu like me just install pkg-config via
sudo apt install pkg-config
The problem was, that the 32 bit Version of pkg-config was installed. By installing pkg-config again it installs the 64bit version
