I have several emails sent to me each day which all contain a hyperlink to a local file in a directory.
I would simply like it to open the link in excel but instead it opens Internet Explorer and then says 'Internet Explorer cannot display webpage'
Is there a way I can change it so it opens in Excel and not IE?
Many thanks,
Mw
check that Excel is the default program for the file extension. Alternatively you could edit the hyperlink to start with "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\excel.exe" with the file path following. (make sure that you edit the path for your version of Excel.

Why doesn't MS Excel allow renaming an unsaved file while sending it over email?
Let me explain it properly -
I have a data set copied currently and have to send it over to another person. I opened MS Excel using shortcuts
Win+R
Enter "Excel"
Ctrl+V
Choose option to send via email
Enter recipients
Click "Send"
Looks something like below -
Is there anyway I can rename "Book2.xlsx" to say "My_Fruit_Order.xlsx" right from here itself?
Please rectify if I'm being ignorant here. Otherwise, will be glad to see MS implement this thingy.
You cannot rename an attachment that is already attached to an email before sending it.
Here is the Microsoft Documentation.
To work around this problem, rename the file before you attach it to the e-mail message.
If you would like to achieve it, then there are other addons that you could use like kutools.

I have a user who was working on an Excel 2007 file from a thumbdrive.. all of a suddem the file will not open and generates the following error:
"Excel cannot open the file 'filename.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file. (OK)"
I hit Ctrl-Shift-i to get the code for that error (101590)
Any ideas how to repair?
I have tried the following to no avail:
Open and Repair tool
Opening with OpenOffice
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/repairing-a-corrupted-workbook-HA010097017.aspx
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928979
First try to rename file. Go to tools, folder options, file types and check have you .xlsx extension. If not then rename the file .xlsx to .xls
Second try to look here: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/4994c2f4-ce6e-467d-a06c-d9ab7d67b706/i-have-a-case-that-the-client-work-on-an-exists-excel-file?forum=excel

I have a problem.I am getting an error message: Database is damaged, cannot allocate space. when accessing one of Lotus Notes databases. I have tried fixup, compact and updall to no avail. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the help.
Well…try this steps:
Open the "Start" menu and click "Computer" or "My Computer" depending on your version of Windows. Navigate to the C drive.
Open the "Notes" folder. Double-click on the "Notes.ini" file to open it in Notepad.
Place a semicolon (;) in front of the following two lines to temporarily disable VirusScan:
AddInsMenus=NCMenu
EXTMGR_ADDINS=NCExtMgr
Click the "Save" option from the "File" menu. Close Notes.ini.

I create a xll file in a computer with vs2008 and Excel 2010. It works perfect on the computer, but when I try to use in a different computer it does not work and excel say tahn the format is not correct. Please can anybody tell me a solution for it. It drive me creasy, it tried almost everything
Thanks in advance
Most likely you are dynamically linking to the C/C++ runtime, and so you need to corresponding redistributable loaded on the other machine.
Alternatively you can statically link to the C/C++ runtime.
If there is an error in the .xll startup, for example a .dll that you need is not found, then Excel will report this with the 'file is not in a valid format...' message.

Excel 2013 is supposed to allow for a maximum of 16,384 columns.
Yet, I cannot seem to get past the old 256 limit.
Am I missing something?
I have chatted online with Microsoft and they insist that the limit is 256. However, we verified several places that the worksheet limit is supposed to be more than 16,000.
Check that you are not in 'Compatibility Mode' by looking at the top bar of your Excel Window. The file name will say [Compatibility Mode] next to it at the very top.
If you opened an old file and haven't converted it then the old limits will still be present. Do a Save-As and select the new format.
Also, if your excel save settings are set to an older file format then any new sheet you create will implement the same limitations.
