I know this has been asked many times, but something strange is happening to me. Apache DocumentRoot is pointing to symfony/web/ and this is my .htaccess inside web/ dir:
DirectoryIndex app_dev.php
#DirectoryIndex app.php
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{ENV:REDIRECT_STATUS} ^$
RewriteRule ^app\.php(/(.*)|$) %{CONTEXT_PREFIX}/$2 [R=301,L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f
RewriteRule .? - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ app_dev.php [QSA,L]
#RewriteRule ^(.*)$ app.php [QSA,L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI}::$1 ^(/.+)(.+)::\2$
RewriteRule ^(.*) - [E=BASE:%1]
RewriteRule .? %{ENV:BASE}app.php [L]
</IfModule>
<IfModule !mod_rewrite.c>
<IfModule mod_alias.c>
RedirectMatch 302 ^/$ /app.php/
</IfModule>
</IfModule>
Well, the thing is www.example.com/route1/ is working and www.example.com/route2/ is throwing an error:
Oops! An Error Occurred
The server returned a "404 Not Found".
Something is broken. Please e-mail us at and let us know what you were doing when this error occurred. We will fix it as soon as possible. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.
While www.example.com/app_dev.php/route2/ is working ok (also www.example.com/app_dev.php/route1/)
Help?
Update. Cache clear in prod throws this error (I never tried before, I'm working on dev):
[Doctrine\Common\Proxy\Exception\UnexpectedValueException]
The type hint of parameter "userRoles" in method "addRole" in class "MyProject\PanelBundle\Entity\User" is invalid.
[ReflectionException]

This is the .htaccess that worked for me:
DirectoryIndex app.php
#DirectoryIndex app_dev.php
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
# Redirect to URI without front controller to prevent duplicate content
# (with and without `/app.php`). Only do this redirect on the initial
# rewrite by Apache and not on subsequent cycles. Otherwise we would get an
# endless redirect loop (request -> rewrite to front controller ->
# redirect -> request -> ...).
# So in case you get a "too many redirects" error or you always get redirected
# to the startpage because your Apache does not expose the REDIRECT_STATUS
# environment variable, you have 2 choices:
# - disable this feature by commenting the following 2 lines or
# - use Apache >= 2.3.9 and replace all L flags by END flags and remove the
# following RewriteCond (best solution)
RewriteCond %{ENV:REDIRECT_STATUS} ^$
#RewriteRule ^app_dev\.php(/(.*)|$) %{CONTEXT_PREFIX}/$2 [R=301,L]
RewriteRule ^app\.php(/(.*)|$) %{CONTEXT_PREFIX}/$2 [R=301,L]
# If the requested filename exists, simply serve it.
# We only want to let Apache serve files and not directories.
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f
RewriteRule .? - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f
#RewriteRule ^(.*)$ app_dev.php [QSA,L]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ app.php [QSA,L]
# The following rewrites all other queries to the front controller. The
# condition ensures that if you are using Apache aliases to do mass virtual
# hosting, the base path will be prepended to allow proper resolution of the
# app.php file; it will work in non-aliased environments as well, providing
# a safe, one-size fits all solution.
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI}::$1 ^(/.+)(.+)::\2$
RewriteRule ^(.*) - [E=BASE:%1]
#RewriteRule .? %{ENV:BASE}app_dev.php [L]
RewriteRule .? %{ENV:BASE}app.php [L]
</IfModule>
<IfModule !mod_rewrite.c>
<IfModule mod_alias.c>
# When mod_rewrite is not available, we instruct a temporary redirect of
# the startpage to the front controller explicitly so that the website
# and the generated links can still be used.
#RedirectMatch 302 ^/$ /app_dev.php/
RedirectMatch 302 ^/$ /app.php/
# RedirectTemp cannot be used instead
</IfModule>
</IfModule>
This error is NOT Apache/htaccess related. This 404 error page is the default one of symfony itself!
Something is broken. Please e-mail us at and let us know what you were doing when this error occurred. We will fix it as soon as possible. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.
There is no route matching /route2. Check your routing like this:
php app/console router:debug
To inspect it quicker use grep or findstr ( Windows )
php app/console router:debug | grep route2
Please also check that your route is not only configured in the dev environment ( i.e. only in routing_dev.yml )!
php app/console router:debug --env=prod
please clear your prodution cache with ...
php app/console cache:clear --env=prod
... and check your log files if there is an uncaught Exception leading to the 404 page displayed when accessing the page. You can for example use this command to view the live changes in the production logfile.
tail -f app/logs/prod.log

I'm relatively new to Codeigniter and MVC. But, have successfully made two apps 'Locally'. While exploring, I found a way to remove 'Index.php' from the URL and also about custom routes. The .htaccess file that i have works like charm locally, but when trying to host it; there is a issue 505 internal server issue
Here is the first .htaccess code that i have (works locally) :-
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
# Turn on URL rewriting
RewriteEngine On
# If your website begins from a folder e.g localhost/my_project then
# you have to change it to: RewriteBase /my_project/
# If your site begins from the root e.g. example.local/ then
# let it as it is
RewriteBase /
# Protect application and system files from being viewed when the index.php is missing
RewriteCond $1 ^(application|system|private|logs)
# Rewrite to index.php/access_denied/URL
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php/access_denied/$1 [PT,L]
# Allow these directories and files to be displayed directly:
RewriteCond $1 ^(index\.php|robots\.txt|favicon\.ico|public|assets|css|js|images)
# No rewriting
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ - [PT,L]
# Rewrite to index.php/URL
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php/$1 [PT,L]
</IfModule>
When i use the code above there is an error. And, the app works only when .htaccess is removed. (I then have to use the inconvenient long URLs)
After a brief research and using different .htaccess without success, i asked one of my friends who has a Hosted CI app successfully running. He sends me a file which leads me the landing page without any problem; but, cant call any functions with/without using routing .i.e. If i use the custom routed URl (www.mySite.com/contact) then also it leads me to the landing page, the same with actual URL scheme (www.mySite.com/welcome/contact_page)
The new code here:-
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
# !IMPORTANT! Set your RewriteBase here and don't forget trailing and leading
# slashes.
# If your page resides at
# http://www.example.com/mypage/test1
# then use
# RewriteBase /mypage/test1/
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?/$1 [L]
</IfModule>
<IfModule !mod_rewrite.c>
ErrorDocument 404 /index.php
</IfModule>
Using this code shows me the landing page but i cannot navigate any further from there. When i try to call a function the landing page reloads. This, I think is because of the last error Handling Code (ErrorDocument 404 /index.php)
Does anyone know what the solution the problem might be??
questions
Why doesnt the first .htaccess code work when hosted?
What may be the issue with the second available .htaccess file??
Do you guys have better .htaccess file? If yes, can you post it here??
Try this .htaccess (Codeigniter Recommended )
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond $1 !^(index\.php|assets|image|resources|robots\.txt)
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?/$1 [L,QSA]
or
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond $1 !^(index\.php|resources|robots\.txt)
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php/$1 [L,QSA]
In application/config/config.php
$config['base_url'] = 'http://stackoverflow.com/';
$config['index_page'] = ''; # Should be empty
And make sure Controller name, Model names are in proper way. Bcz Linux Host is an Case-Sensitive.
Looking for a bit of help as ending up going round in circles trying to understand where the problem may lie.
We recently had our magento side on www.domain.com which would shop through rewrite rules as:
"domain.com/"
This was correct.
However, as we are targeting the UK market, the site being relatively new we decided to buy up the .co.uk domain and make the switch. Making it www.domain.co.uk, this was all changed correctly in the magento database/backend yet this now starts showing:
"domain.co.uk"
Missing the forward slash on the end.
I have confirmed in the mysql database that the URL has a slash, and have even turned off mod_rewrite from the .htacess, yet there is still a rewrite occurring from somewhere.
It seems like forever since I set this up on the previous site to remove the "http://" and add the forward slash, but I can't remember how or where I set this.
If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards
Edit : Below is the code for rewrite:
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
############################################
## enable rewrites
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
############################################
## you can put here your magento root folder
## path relative to web root
RewriteBase /
############################################
## uncomment next line to enable light API calls processing
# RewriteRule ^api/([a-z][0-9a-z_]+)/?$ api.php?type=$1 [QSA,L]
############################################
## rewrite API2 calls to api.php (by now it is REST only)
RewriteRule ^api/rest api.php?type=rest [QSA,L]
############################################
## workaround for HTTP authorization
## in CGI environment
RewriteRule .* - [E=HTTP_AUTHORIZATION:%{HTTP:Authorization}]
############################################
## TRACE and TRACK HTTP methods disabled to prevent XSS attacks
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_METHOD} ^TRAC[EK]
RewriteRule .* - [L,R=405]
############################################
## redirect for mobile user agents
#RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/mobiledirectoryhere/.*$
#RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} "android|blackberry|ipad|iphone|ipod|iemobile|opera mobile|palmos|webos|googlebot-mobile" [NC]
#RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /mobiledirectoryhere/ [L,R=302]
############################################
## always send 404 on missing files in these folders
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/(media|skin|js)/
############################################
## never rewrite for existing files, directories and links
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-l
############################################
## rewrite everything else to index.php
RewriteRule .* index.php [L]
</IfModule>
make sure you update all instances of the web/unsecure/base_url & web/secure/base_url in the core_config_data table, I'd suggest searching this table for all values like %domain.co.uk%.
Also delete the cache folder as some config values aren't completely removed with the admin Clear cache button.
Are you sure there is an actual redirect happening? Try using this site http://redirectcheck.com to see if you are actually being redirected. Some browsers will not show the http:// or trailing / so it may not be an actual issue.
If you need to redirect non-www to www add the following lines to your .htaccess file below " RewriteEngine on"
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\. [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^$ public/ [L]
RewriteRule (.*) public/$1 [L]
</IfModule>
I'm using wamp apache on windows 7. mod_rewrite.so has been enabled in httpd.conf. This code was directly taken from a tutorial found here: http://anantgarg.com/2009/03/13/write-your-own-php-mvc-framework-part-1/
It's purpose is to redirect calls to the ./public folder where the actual logic lies.
I get an internal server error (http 500) when I try to browse index.php in the directory of this .htaccess file. When I remove the two rewriterule statements, it works.
Not sure why, but no error shows up in the logs folder. There is no error log whatsoever.
Any clue on what's going wrong here?
Your expression, (.*), matches the target, /public/something. The rewrite engine loops until the request URI stops getting changed, and your request URI is turning into /public/public/public/public/public etc because there's nothing that stops the rewriting process. Try adding a condition to prevent the loop:
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^$ public/ [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/public/
RewriteRule (.*) public/$1 [L]
</IfModule>
So if the request already starts with /public, don't apply the rule.
I have a website built on codeigniter and am trying to get the PP IPN working with it. I have looked at a few CI specific libraries, but want to have a stand alone IPN file.
Basically, I have CI installed in the website root and I have another directory 'pp', also in the root.
I'm trying to test the IPN using Paypal's sandbox, but it's returning a 404, I also can't access the file directly.
Here is my .htaccess file:
XSendFile on
Options -Indexes
Options +FollowSymlinks
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
### Canonicalize codeigniter URLs
RewriteRule ^(index(/index)?|index(\.php)?)/?$ / [L,R=301]
RewriteRule ^(.*)/index/?$ $1 [L,R=301]
# Removes trailing slashes (prevents SEO duplicate content issues)
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.+)/$ $1 [L,R=301]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^(www) [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mysite.net/$1 [L,R=301]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond $1 !^(index\.php|pp|robots\.txt)
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php/$1 [L]
</IfModule>
<IfModule !mod_rewrite.c>
# Without mod_rewrite, route 404's to the front controller
ErrorDocument 404 /index.php
</IfModule>
Here's hoping it's something really obvious!
Thanks,
Ryan
If the pp directory exists, you could just put an htaccess file in that directory and just have:
RewriteEngine On
in it by itself, and any rules in the main htaccess file would get ignored. If your paypal stuff already has rewrite rules in an htaccess file in the pp directory, you may want to look into those rules as the cause of the 404.
Do you have mod_rewrite.c enabled. If not, that .htaccess will always give 404. (Sorry I couldn't make this a comment, don't have the rep).
I'm playing with .htaccess and I was wondering if with just an .htaccess inside the root directory is possible to block all the request from a browser directed on existing files or directories.
Let's try this example:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /~my_user/my_base/
RewriteRule ^list/$ list.php [L]
RewriteRule ^element_of_list/([a-zA-Z0-9\-]+)/$ element.php?elem_id=$1 [L]
Now, if I write http://127.0.0.1/~my_user/my_base/list/, this is wroking fine but if I write http://127.0.0.1/~my_user/my_base/list.php it's still working. I don't want that. I want the user to obtain a 404 error in the last case.
We have /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/userdir.conf
<IfModule mod_userdir.c>
UserDir public_html
UserDir disabled root
<Directory /home/*/public_html>
AllowOverride All
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
<Limit GET POST OPTIONS>
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Limit>
<LimitExcept GET POST OPTIONS>
Order deny,allow
Deny from all
</LimitExcept>
</Directory>
</IfModule>
My first try was to use RewriteCond:
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f [OR]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ 404.php [L]
But it's not working. Every request ends up redirected to 404.php
UPDATE
So I've managed to create the filter for directories:
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/~my_user/my_base/$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ 404.php [L]
What it does is to check if the requested path (REQUEST_FILENAME) exists and it's a directory AND if it's not my RewriteBase which is basically index.php, then redirect to 404.php
I'm still trying to find something that does the same thing for files. I know I can selectively do that using extensions filename but I want an universal filter for files.
If I've understood your requirements correctly, you're looking to do something like this:
# This is a real directory...
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f [OR]
# Or it's a real file...
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d
# And it's not 404.php...
RewriteCond $0 !=404.php
# And it's not the root
RewriteCond $0 !=""
# And it's not any of the above due to an internal redirect...
RewriteCond %{ENV:REDIRECT_STATUS} ^$
# So cause a 404 response (you could redirect to 404.php if you want)
RewriteRule ^.*$ - [R=404,L]
# Set the 404 error document
ErrorDocument 404 /~my_user/my_base/404.php
Keep in mind that this blocks everything that exists, so any images, stylesheets, or scripts will be sent to the 404 page too. If you just want to block access to the PHP files, Gumbo's solution is more appropriate. I think in that case you'll need another RewriteCond though to prevent looping:
# Make sure the reason this request has a .php is because it was requested
# by the user (and not due to a redirect)
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]+\s/[^\s]+\.php
# Make sure we aren't on 404.php already
RewriteRule %{REQUEST_URI} !404\.php$
# We aren't, so redirect to 404.php
RewriteRule ^ 404.php [L]
Try this rule:
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]+\ /[^?\ ]*\.php[/?\ ]
RewriteRule .*\.php$ 404.php [L]
This will rewrite all requests whose paths contain a .php internally to 404.php.
